- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- Mario Tennis is a sports video game developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 video game console. The game was released in North America and Japan in the summer of 2000, and released in Europe later in November. It is the first tennis-based game starring Mario since Mario's Tennis, and the second game developed by Camelot on a Nintendo system. The game is known for being the introduction of Luigi's evil doppleganger, Waluigi, and the re-introduction of Princess Daisy and Birdo.

Mario tennis review on the nintendo 64. Recorded using a dazzle and on original real console hardware and game cartridge.
Some of the best multiplayer times I've had on the n64. Such a great game.
Got this when it originally came out and have loved it ever since, one of my favorites on the system for sure! My brother and I put so many hours into this game and I'll always cherish those memories. That menu music is absolutely fantastic as well
wiiviewsnumba1fan its amazing how one piece of music can bring back so many memories :)
Yes, so very true! And this game has plenty of great music that takes me back!
I decided to take Tennis as one of my physical education courses in college because of this game. Granted, I am nowhere near as good in real life as I am in this video game. lol
Just played this for the very first time. Within seconds I was addicted to the controls and feel.
This was ACE to see again, thank you for serving this up. I remember
Virtua Tennis being a multiplayer favourite around the same time. The
graphical wow factor swung it over this for me I think, but both were
loads of fun.
This is probably the greatest sports related video game I've ever played. And in the top 10 best multiplayer experiences ever. I much prefer this version over the GameCube one. Fantastic game in every way and one that really puts a friendship to a tolerance test.
i totally agree...its also much easier for multiplayer than mario golf was even though they are both mario sports titles this one is far easer to pick up and play
Absolutely fantastic title; the gameplay in Mario Tennis 64 is perfect. Its easily in my top five games on the system for sure. Excellent appraisal too Glenn.
Thank you I'm glad there seem to be other fans of this game too :-)
The nostalgia is strong with this one, I overplayed this game with my brother unlocking everything in the game. When family visited we had tournaments. This is why Mario needs more sports games like these.
Are you a fan of Mario golf too?
***** I only played that game a couple times, but I remember it being very fun. I wouldn't mind playing it again if I ever find it.
A lot of people love it for the same reasons as they love Mario tennis
***** Its easy to see why the games are as lovable as they are, and again makes me question why nintendo hasn't released any HD re-releases or new sports games featuring nintendo characters. Wasn't Super Strikers the last one they made?
I think it was perhaps yes
Waluigi debut was in this game ... oh the good times
Ali Faras love waluigi!
Yep. Waluigi's first time with Mario and the rest of the all-stars was in a new millennium, 2000.
MythoVirus I thought that was Mario Party 3
@@MINK2393 Mario Party 3 was around the same time, but he was apparently created first for Mario Tennis, as they wanted a unique rival for Luigi, and doubles partner for Wario.
I love how it is Mario themed but underneath it's also a really good, fun tennis game with spot on physics. I prefer the way this game does not have those overpowered finishing moves that featured in later Mario tennis games. I had great fun with this one and it is undoubtedly the best in the series.
Mario Tennis was excellent. Definitely one of my favorite N64 titles. It was a lot like Virtua Tennis, which I’d love to play at arcades, but you know, with that Nintendo charm.
I really need to get around to buying the new game for Switch.
definitely a multiplayer staple for the N64. 4 player doubles action couldn't be beat
most of the games I played on the N64 as a kid were my brother's, but I remember afternoon's at grandma's house and us playing this game fondly.
Great review as usual. This game along with Mario Golf/Kart were some of my favorite games to play with friends!
golf will be reviewed next year and I'm looking forward to doing it :)
One of my favourite n64 games
For me it was a prelude to the Dreamcast’s amazing Virtua Tennis. Before then I had grown up and laying a lot of Mario Tennis on the Virtua Boy.
virtue tennis is amazing still even to this day :)
All of the Camelot/Nintendo sports games are great.
They make sports which may normally be a bit intimidating easily accessible.
Rented it back in the day and loved it. Hoping to pick up a copy soon.
This is one of my favorites on the N64. At the time, I even sunk a good deal of time into the single player with the various unlockables.
You're right though, the multiplayer is tight. 4 of us played this recently, with various levels of experience, including one newcomer. It was a blast, and was a good alternate for our usual Mario Kart 64 multiplayer.
The only downside is that after Top Spin for the XBOX came about, it made it tough to enjoy the single player for Mario Tennis, as Top Spin was such a tight tennis game.
SLoMo4 i much preferred virtual tennis on the dreamcast as opposed to the xbox offerings...something so addictive about it
Great review. I have many fond memories of Mario Tennis, including the underrated GBC version!
yeah someones mentioned the transfer PAK secret so i need to check that out for this game
Transferring your player from the gbc version was pretty sweet
Me and my best friend had INTENSE 1v1 matches in this game. Besides Goldeneye, Smash Brothers and Mario Kart, this is one of my top N64 games.
yeah thats why i think its so cool because people don't normally associate sports games with great titles but in this case its true
I think this is #1 on my list of games that I want but don't have in my N64 collection. It was such a pleasant surprise that their Tennis game was so good. I used to play a lot of (real) tennis, and it actually does feel a lot like real tennis, far more so than virtually any other sports game, though of course there's a lot of over-the-top special arcady mechanics, and real tennis has proportionally far fewer ghosts and giant spikey turtles in it. After renting it once or twice, my friend with the N64 bought it, and we got a lot of replay value out of it. For a system not very well known for its sports games, it sure had some great sports games, like Mario Golf, which was also a great game. I always found that Gamecube and Wii games were too dumbed down compared to their N64 counterparts, with overly simplistic controls and with unnecessarily sanitized characters and narratives. Nintendo games on the N64 tended to be a lot more kid-friendly than for other systems of the time, but there was still a bit of a more mature, hard edge to some of the humor during this generation.
Don’t get you started on wii tennis 🎾😂
cool review Glenn, ive got this sat on the shelf!!
give it a bash, the kids will love it too
This game is incredible. So much fun and you have to be pretty skilled when playing the later tournaments :)
I wish they'd implemented browsers castle court in Mario tennis aces. it was hectic and fun. it's not just the characters that make the game fun. it was the unique courts as well.
that would have been awesome!
mario tennis and mario golf for the n64 were both some of the best sports games ever imo. I don't like the sequels as much because they feel like the exact same game which isn't really acceptable for the modern consoles. While these games are great they were great for their time too so i like them more for that reason. This is such an easy to pick up and learn game that its great to play with friends too. For some reason i also didn't like mario soccer or mario baseball as much as tennis and golf.
I played this game like a crazy ! It introduced me to tennis world!
thats one way to learn!
Me too lol.
Got an N64 for my birthday one year along with this and Kirby 64. Great memories!
This was the kind of game you got sucked into. Win, lose, didn't matter. I would play and change characters, try different things, and before I knew it, I'd spent hours playing. Very addictive sports game.
Yeah they always managed to nail that aspect of their sports titles at Nintendo
One of my favorite games to play with my family, only downside Is the amount of controller extensions with 4 people sitting 8' away from the console, lol. Nice review!
Haha yeah I know what you mean! We need a decent wireless controller to be made for the console - perhaps retrofighters May build one one day
@@n64glennplant that would be so nice, imagine a good quality wireless controller that would would work with all retro consoles. Now I'm just dreaming, haha
Just picked up Mario Tennis from my retro game store. What a joy! Couldn't put it down last night.
always a pleasure to watch these Glenn, Yet another one I have never played but would love to. I had an N64 (well my brother did) but I'm starting to think that maybe we didn't play that many games on it lol
this would be an awesome game for the new series....easy for any of you guys to play and would be a right laugh if none of you have played it yet.
Waluigi was always my pick. He seemed to prefer the grass court too, although that could just have been me.
I fondly remember getting this back in 2001 from a local gamestore for my birthday. Happy days
you must have had hours of fun with this game no doubt!
Absolutely!
I actually bought this when I was an adult rather then playing it when I younger so even playing it by today's standards it looks and plays beautifully and is very addictive. I love this game.
Another cool video dude. I remember use to playing this all the time at a McDonalds where they had this game and other n64 games you can play. I miss being 5 again .
there were never n64 in my mcdonalds :( i had a deprived childhood lol
*****
nah man, you had your own n64...I had to utilize my McDonalds just to play OoT and some one kept erasing my data.
oh man i bet that would suck big time!
Yep. I een owning my n64 since 98. I got it when I was 3 years old and I uploaded on N64 videos on my channel. I hope all of you enjoy them. :D
i will check them out when i get home from work tonight :)
I loved this game as a child. Then I grew up and change it in a flea market for Conker's Bad Fur Day. I don't regret it... but I do miss Mario Tennis.
I never knew this game was on the 64 and I am so bloody sold on it after this video! ;)
you need it man! its cheap to get and will last hours! its awesome even in solo mode as loads to do
Great vid as always Glenn :) I never realized how good Mario Tennis was, I kinda just overlooked it back in the day as I just assumed it was a tennis game re-skinned with Mario characters but I gotta say it looks like a awesome multiplayer game! :) Thanks again for highlighting another over looked gem :)
You're welcome! Yeah it's certainly overlooked due to it being a sports game but this is way up there with some classic multiplayer games
***** Yeah it really looks like a lot of fun :) I'm gonna definitely look into picking up a copy of it :)
Tbh I never played or considered playing a Mario Tennis game before until I decided to add this to my collection and I couldn’t believe how fun it is!
Glad you felt that way too!
Baby Mario was the best
Finally 100%'d this game after many years. So many ring challenges
Late 90s early 2000s Nintendo games were the GOAT couch co ops
It may not be well known, but there are additional characters and maps, that are unlocked via the GB transfer pak. There's a gameshark code if you don't want to do that.
very cool i didn't know that! i may have to dig my TP out next year and cover it!
I love this game. I'm still at high school and I play this game nearly every day (on the real console). This isn't my favourite games on the console (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is my favourite game on both console and of all time), but this is in my top 10 best games of all time list. I love you're videos.
Paris Du Casse thank you - LoZ OOT is my fav game of all time :)
Same with you two, I love classic games, they're the games that you will remember for the rest of your life. With this game, I was never really a fan of the doubles mode, I loved playing 2 players on single and dominating my brother. He has not beat me once in 10 years. I'm going to always look back at these memories. Keep doing good videos, I really enjoy them.
Peace
The GameBoy game had an amazing single player story and if I recall, you could load your character into Mario Tennis 64 using the Transfer Pak.
The only tennis game I know where you're permitted to score and hit your opponent in the head, chest, or groin region in the process. That aside though it is a fun game that initially I had no interest in until I played a demo at a local Toys R Us back in the day and I was hooked to it for awhile. The last time I played was with an old friend playing Shy Guy while he took on the role of Luigi. I just narrowly one. Bowser's Castle is also a very fun mode.
Played this for the first time on my switch for the N64 expansion pass, and I regret passing this over as a kid
i played this game just because i rly like hot shots golf (everybody´s golf), mostly for those minigolf courses...
I'll do mario golf soon :-)
i got this game, but cant really get the hang of it.
i would like too, but it doesnt feel importent if i make a normal or a power hit
Never played this sport version from my childhood 😕 Although, I do remember Baby Mario from Mario Golf including played that game before. Memories I had so much from playing N64 😇
Can someone give some insight on the controls...Holding A gives the power top spin shot but I have notice that pressing A twice also gives a power shot? Is it better to hold A or should I press A twice?
cobi jones holding any of the buttons (A, B, A+B) gives a charge shot. While running toward the net, double tapping the button(s) will make a powerful shot. The main key to powerful shots is pressing the control stick in the direction you're hitting the ball
Hey thanks so much for helping me to understand the controls. Cheers to you!
Glad I could help. I'm a bit of an expert having played this game since it was released hehe
Nice review Glenn!
thanks :D
I remember playing this game against my sister all the time growing. Surprisingly enough mario tennis and Pokemon puzzle league were the only two multiplayer games me and my sister faced each with many times. Reason is cause my sister always got stomped in Mario kart 64 and Smash, but still Great video watching this makes me want to play the game again.
what a great memory thank you for sharing! i also think this game is nicely balanced so for gamers who are new to series then its easy to pick up and play!
Definitely, I totally agree with you. Which is why this game alongside with Donkey kong 64 and Mario kart 64 will hold a special place in my heart
dk 64 is on my list to get covered next year
Sweet cannot wait! I am looking forward to it :)
I really love this game, and I like the sequel on Gamecube even more. I suppose I could say the same thing about the Mario Golf games as well.
i will be getting around to MG in the new year.....i just didn't want to cover them both in a short space of time, they are both super games and i agree the sequels add more but you know me i love originals such as smash brothers etc :D
I love this game when I was a kid me and my mom brought
This game along with mario party 2.This was so difficult that is awesome. I love the soundtrack in this game. This game was awesome along with this review.
Christopher Harris ah thanks man! glad i could bring back some rad memories!
I loved this game, when it came out it was the only game I played for months
yeah theres loads of depth in it and secrets to unlock to keep you coming back - not forgetting the awesome bonus game modes!
I usually get more into rpg type games so idk y but this is one of the best games i ever played. Its been a decade but i remember the mechanics of the game being an Ace. Hated the new abilities on the Gamecube version. Heard Aces was okay but not great so do yourself a favor and buy this!
I think it has that certain charm and ease of learning that makes it easy to enjoy but it also has enough depth to make it a long one to master
Underrated for sure!
A great starting point for the series
I got this game when it came out and while I didn't do everything I had a blast with it, and only accidentally found out about the Transfer pak working with this and the GBA game during the Gamecube's time.
yes, I know. it took me the end of the 64 and the rise of the GBA to find out about the Transfer pack capability with this game
I remember playing this or was it the gamecube version? lol blend back then since I didnt have n64/gamecube in the early stages
witam! the gamecube version has better graphics etc but naturally i love the n64 version. they are both great games however!
Not really a sports game fan but this game looks decently fun..
Never cared for sports at all and even today I don't find the m intristing...but believe it or not I actually memorized all of the rules of Tennis due to this game at 5 years old is when I started playing Tennis. I still play some matches with family or friends when I go to the park evevery now and then just for fun. I never liked sports but I'll always have a soft spot for Tennis because of the great memories this game gave me.
I'm not fully invested in the sport, I don't watch it or anything, but I do play it and have a good time doing it, and I have Mario Tennis to thank for that.
I am Playing it now
What is your favorite n64 game
thats easy - zelda OOT :)
I like Mario Tennis on the N64 more than the Gamecube.
you know what i think i did too
Me too. One of the best tennis games mechanically period
is this emulation?? just wondering what the deal is with mario's hat it looks glitched
nope i always use real console it would perhaps me to do with the svideo capture and it occasionally throws up red as green in places
Yer I didn't think you where you an emu guy, hell you got the everdrive which I would kill my 1st born to have lol
Oh and yer I love your channel! Not many channels have me watching every single video
thats great to hear man, glad you are digging what i have up so far and theres no signs of me slowing down yet!
some controller review would go down a treat! i would love your view on the hori pad and some arcade sticks
From Camelot?!
Since 2000 I always thought this game was made by Nintendo.
Nope! Learn something new every day hey!
@@n64glennplant Just proves that Camelot made a remarkable job at making this game which fooled 12-year-old me into thinking Nintendo had made it and consider the fact that I started playing N64 in '96 with Mario Kart, Mario 64, Smash and then the Mario Party series and never noticed the difference between them and this tennis game 😁
This is another game that me and my cousins would play back in the day while waiting for Thanksgiving dinner, and we had a blast with it. It was simple, it was easy to play, it was FUN to play and there was alot of variety. and....really that's all I have to say. The only critizim i have with the game is that it's appeal dies off pretty quickly, much like rampage, but it still works will as a warm up for bigger N64 multiplay classics.
That's a cool way to look at it, everyone remembers the Mario kart and goldeneye but it's variety by games like this that kept us sticking to n64 for multiplayer
Oh Ya. Hey, could you do a video on Excitebike 64? I've been considering adding that one to my collection, could you tell me if it holds up today or not?
I've recorded it but the review will probably be in jan :-)
I'm so happy Mario tennis is on the switch I was just playing it last night and it's just as hard as it used to be. I was playing a quick round on normal and I have Yoshi a trick shot and the fucker gave it right back to me.
This game was great! I used to play it all the time with friends, when I was younger. Got the hidden characters from a friend, too xD
I always loved games with hidden characters and unlockables
Hey Glenn, very nice vid but where is bear and bird?
they will be coming! probably next year now as I've only recorded footage from the first half of the game and i need the whole game to review it. the longer games take longer to make and its just fitting in time at this busy time of the year for me :)
Walaluigi is in this?! Didnt think he was that old.
Mario sport titles are normally way better than generic sport titles,
I loved this game and all the cube Gen ones, never played the baseball one yet tho, but do you remember NBA Street V3 Mario cross over game.
i think i read about that but never played it lev! sounds like i should !
its ok =D but good collecters game most people dont know about it.
yeah i think thats why I've not had it or played it
its about £10 on ebay so not too pricey but its cool to see mario and co on different titles like that Boom street on wii with Dragon Quest people
yeah mario seems to get some pretty awesome tie in games
In high school my friends and I were mall rats. The year this game came out, I would play it in the EB or GameStop that was in our mall practically all afternoon. They would literally have to drag me out or pick me up and carry me out to get me to stop playing. One of my favorite N64 games.
ha I would spend hours in our local gaming store too but they never had live systems to play on
Underappreciated Mario game.
Yeah nice review, pretty hard to find any negatives for this one... being down the bottom of the court was easier though
i prefer bottom court too hah i think its just because id rather push the stick than pull it to aim shots
I think Ive seen all your videos and I’ve always agreed with you, however, the music in this game is the worst. Any of the Camelot games I just head straight to the menu and turn off the god awful music.
My all time favorite game!!!
Many, many hours on this one in my day! so much fun! I'm still the undisputed champ in Mario Tennis and Golf. I'd really like to play someone who could give me a run for my money!
I bet I could kick your butt with Waluigi!
This game is such a blur to me. I remember loving the game but I can't remember anything from it other than seeing DK Jr. as a playable character (this was probably the last time DK Jr. was seen before Nintendo either ignored them or replaced them).
Now you mention it yeah I can’t think of any either
i am not a sport game fan ,but this does look fun. i believe this game makes use of the transfer pak to import players from gameboy color version.
yes that is correct as far as i know! they didn't seem to advertise that fact that well
Good old times
i only played mario tennis on virtual boy and its really bad, i see this game a lot in flea markets and i pass because i don't know it was good, next time i'm gonna grab it. Great review!
cool let me know what you think of it....im sure you'd like it
I really enjoyed this game it's more my style reviews leaned towards Virtua Tennis as being the better game but the colourful arcadey style won me over I had both tennis games at the time and I really preferred this one.
I don't know how people look back on it in comparison but this game was pure fan service.
I enjoyed unlocking the extra courts and some matches against the computer were really difficult I played with every charachter the appeal was there enough to complete it with every character.
Virtua Tennis was technically better and more realistic and because I'm not really a Tennis player all of those things don't appeal to me.
I rather play a video game than a simulation of a game depending on what type of game it is, you know what I mean ?
yeah i think thats why this game wiped the floor in terms of sales compared to a sim like all star tennis on n64...unless you are a die hard fan which most of us are not then you want to play a fun tennis game without all the rules as strict as they are in simulation based games. its especially better for multiplayer
I'm looking forward to the new mario tennis game for the switch
This was my first game! Me my brother, my brother in law and my friend play this any chance we get when we are together!
See even to this day it still holds up amazingly well :-)
this game is unforgettable, until the copied sega sega super stars doing the tennis, but I liked the mario 2 is even better =) nice video ^ ^
thank you! yeah sega copied this big time but nintendo characters are far more appealing IMO
Nice video planty.
cheers :D
A real classic
I loved this game it had so many rage inducing moments though when trying to unlock new characters lol but I remember renting this game, loved it, then bought it when the n64 was dying but I lost it and dunno where it went :/ talk about a crappy moment.
OH YEAH HOW COULD I FORGET?! To add insult to injury I even lost the GameCube Mario tennis as well! Damnit! Nothing but bad memories for me with these games ._.
that sucks man, its like any current gen console when the next new piece of kit comes out....everything gets forgotten until years later :(
Hah I never forget my games! Like dynasty warriors 3, I remember that same friend brought that too my house and fell in love with it! The wizard pang or whatever whose musou move spun him in circles that had lightning attacks? Or something idk but it was awesome too bad when I copied my friends file that something happened over the years and now I have to start over and whatnot so its no fun anymore lol and I can't replace it cuz we no longer talk anymore for whatever reason idk haha. But I bought Conkers Bad Fur Day on eBay for the n64 since I couldn't play it at that age and the n64 was long gone, but the thing I hate with that game is that aiming is hard haha luckily the game was already beaten cuz I have no clue how to progress in it and the same goes for Majora's mask but I think I beat it from scratch regardless, man what a long response guess u can say this system brought good memories xD
yeah if you get hardcore into n64 then its worth getting a hori pad as they are better than the n64 one for aiming etc
Ah okay, dunno if I will since I don't have a tv that supports the red white yellow cable plugins anymore lol
Certainly one of the best super Mario sport ever created after Mario kart. But to be honest one of the one i didn't appreciate. Since i'm not a big fan of sport games,
But certainly a good game for Nintendo collection. ^^
and not too expensive to pick up either! its one of the best n64 sports games for sure
Glenn, do your list next video!
Fun game but not as good as Virtua Tennis or Tennis 2k2(VT2) on the DC, which were its main competition at the time.
Best tennis game ever! I used to smash all my family & friends w/ Waluigi or Boo. Classic!
This game introduced me to Birdo and Waluigi i thaught Birdo was a Pig then i Played MarioBros 2 and i found out the truth.
Looks better than the Virtual Boy version of the game
Haha well that is true!
Only tennis game I ever played.
Mario Tennis is really good. Well all of the Mario sports games are pretty good.
Though to be honest they bore the shit out of me. xD
You definitely have to be in the mood to play them!
