- Mario Party[a] is a party video game series featuring characters from the Mario franchise in which up to four local players or computer-controlled characters (called "CPUs") compete in a board game interspersed with minigames. The games are developed by NDcube and published by Nintendo, previously being developed by Hudson Soft. The series is known for its party game elements, including the often unpredictable multiplayer modes that allow play with up to four, and sometimes eight, human players or CPUs.

Mario Party 64 is by far the best Mario Party game (IMO). I miss the days when Nintendo wasn't afraid of trolling its consumers thus.
The two things I remember the most when I remember the first Mario Party game in the series: pulsating, red, hurting palms from rotating the control sticks too much, and that badass music in the options house.
I really loved this game when it came out. This game is perfect for small parties or family get togethers. I agree that the mini games in the modern mario party games seem super lame compared to the old n64 ones.

The original controller destroyer! If you didn't snap the joystick off on the tug o war game; you smashed it against the wall with rage when the chance time made you give all yours stars to Luigi on the last turn!!!

Ah yes, I have very fond memories of this game and it has a special place in my heart. I even got a copy sealed at home for my N64. My family wasn't very rich so I only had a couple games for my N64 like Mario Party, GoldenEye, Mario 64 and Pokémon Stadium but out of all those, this and GoldenEye were probably the ones I spent the most time on. Some of my childhood friends still to this day come to me and ask if I want to play another round of Mario Party with them. Good Times
A wonderful series! Many blisters and joysticks were damaged because of some of the mini games. Friendships also tested
One of the best on 64. And still today with 3 friends a great time will always be had.
Loved the Mario Party series since I was a kid, and my friends and I still get kicks out of it today. The original was alright, solid but nothing out of this world. 2 and 3 are great. My friend likes 4 but I'm not too big on it. My friends and I all loved 5, and I was surprised to hear that a lot of MP fans had that lower on their lists. 6 and 7 were both pretty solid. I could never get into the Parties after 7.

So it wasn't just me and my family who tore the skin off of our hands playing Tug-o-War? I assumed we were doing it wrong, because surely it couldn't be designed to cause such pain.
I did play this with my brother but he always had to work. i was left to play it alone and i kinda adapted to that

What a memorable and iconic game. I mean, of course I destroyed my palms playing the 3v1 river and tug of war games, but no other game has attracted such a wide range of interested family members to join in the fun. I think that the wide appeal and solid selection of minigames makes this still one of the best games on the system, and in the genre of wide-appeal party games. From losing all my coins in the Bowser grab bag to somehow surviving the mine cart races, it's a game that holds a lot of memories.
I only have Mario Party 2 and 3, but all of the N64 ones were amazing, plus it's the ultimate test of friendships xD
P.S. I hurt my hand on the "spin the joystick quickly" minigames many times!!!
the grab bag game was always a blast - and i loved the skateboard scamper game having got into skateboarding during this era
This was the one and only mario party game ive ever played. I loved it but i wasnt in the mood for another one.
If you ask me, the original Nintendo 64 trilogy and Nintendo Gamecube quadrilogy need to be remastered for Nintendo Switch. So far, "Mario Party 2" got re-released on virtual console releases for Wii and Wii U. And for "Mario Party 1 HD", instead of control-stick mini-games being painful, they are now optional, resulting in alternate control schemes (ex. for "Tug of War", you can now circle your joy-con one way as fast as you can. For "Pedal Power", you can either circle your joy-con or just tap a button as quickly as possible. etc.).
Testing my brawler64 controller with this… it’s doing well so far!!
Shame they don’t have a UK distributor - the import charges make the controller way too expensive
It's all about multi-player. I've 1 & 2 on N64 and all of the GC and Wii entries. It's a pity that the luck factor has increased a bit as the series has progressed - sometimes the later titles remove the ability to pick who you want to steal a star or batch of coins from and instead make it random - which takes some of the fun and tactics out of it. The game could also do with being sped up in the board section as the text mashing and animations are unskippable and get annoying after a while
This was my favourite Mario party, then number 3 would be second.
I am in love with the series haven't missed one yet, always fun to have at parties or otherwise.
Does anyone know how to hack Mario Party 1? I would fix some of the issues like adding unused content back in and 1 rotation of the control stick would be 2 or 3 times as effective on rotation-intensive mini games.
Glenn, you didn't talk about the piece-of-shit mini-games where you have to rotate the control stick really fast!

Somehow the music sounds wrong in this video.. and there are graphical glitches.. is this the NTSC version? Guess I just played too much of the PAL version or something...
Going off memory here but pretty sure it’ll be ntsc, graphical glitches are more to do with capture card I used then instead of now
I know this might put a bit more work into these videos, but it seems kinda strange when you talk about something (such as the way luigi looks) but at that time on the screen, mario is shown inside a minigame, or the traps (good example here could have been: hitting the ? spaces, and the tower spins from toad to bowser.), but then again I should probably try making reviews myself soon.
I've never fogiven this game for the broken controller...
years later and every time I hear the title ''Mario Party'' I still hear the crack my N64 controller made when having to rotate the stick as fast as possible. it was brutal...

seriously. that is one of the imfmous levels as you had to roate the controler and yeah it will just bullshit as it would ruin your hands to do roate it fast enough lol.
I played it a lot with my brothers and friends when I was young. Very fun game and much memories too!

This game burned a hole through the palm of my hand. Would not play this game today because of how hard it is on the controllers joystick. N64 controllers in good shape are hard to come by these day's.
That’s why I keep a stock of replacement sticks to swap out when any go dead 😬

I actually remember renting this game as a boy. Also, did you know that in the Japanese version, Luigi and Wario had a line that was offensive, and was altered to something else for the North American release?
321SPONGEBOLT "OH MY GOD!" was the "super offensive" line. they change it to a drawn out "OH NO!" in western releases

I remember the first time I heard about this game, it was in an issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine. I fell in love with it the second I saw the screenshots. I knew I had to play it. And it didn't disappoint ! Mario Party 2 is even better, but I never got to play the 3rd one, it's still too expensive for now. I need to get it someday !

I remember playing this back then and I had a lot of fun. I mostly played with my brother but occasionally we had friends over.
I foolishly traded this game in a long time ago and regretted that. However, I have recently bought it a new copy and plan to keep it!
I basically have ALL of the Mario Party games now from the N64, GBA, NDS and Wii. I am looking forward to the new one coming to 3DS and I'm sure they could release one for Wii U.

Somebody probably already mentioned this but Wario's voice actor sounds weird but I really love it (especially when Wario screams in pain after getting hit by something).
The only thing I didn't care for in the original were those thumb-stick spinning game where you had to place your palm on it and spin it really fast which could wreck your hand and/or stick! Thank goodness they got rid of those in the sequels.
You didn't mention the infamous palm rotating mini-games.
Too bad asking for a re-release of this is like asking for mother 3 to come west or goldeneye 007 64 to come to any platform. I don’t give a damn about what anyone says about the 5 stick spinning games or how Mario party 2 is better in every way…
I WANT A DAMN RE-RELEASE of this game already! I love this game I don’t care what other people think the control sticks on switch are more comfortable than the n64 sticks…. Why do people not think of this yet?

I did love this game but because of a couple of mini games where you had to wind the joy-stick over and over again, many blistered palms were the result and my N64 controllers are badly damaged because of this.
I just got Mario Party 2 & 3 so will get some friends over soon to play these multi-player titles :)
Oh man I love this game, last year when I was just getting into it I played it aaaaall the time. With my friends, my family, and even my cousins. This was before I knew how poor quality N64 joysticks were so we wore out quite a few, but it was well worth it, it's just an awesome game =)
How do you get the n64 to go into widescreen mode?
Does anyone know if I can get the N64 games on the switch or do i have to look for a N64 set to play these?

I don't remember the first Mario Party much other than having the skin on my palm being torn off (the pain is even greater when trying to hold on to the monkey bars) but still having fun playing the game. Also how Luigi an oddity? I know his voice is really strange but he doesn't look too bad. If you want a real oddity, look at Peach's winning animation (the way her lips get bigger always freaked me out). Actually some character's winning and/or losing animation looks odd (Yoshi slapping his eyes when he loses is another strange one...for me that is). Then again, everybody has their own opinions and preferences.
i got this game for my birthday..when it came out...i used to play this with my cousins and siblings such great memories even tho fights would break out lol. Also my controllers where never the same after playing this..Paddle battle was the worst for me.. I still play this game on my n64 till this day!

This game was a huge part of my childhood. I will say though, and everyone knows this, but this game is the reason for the death of so many N64 controller joysticks. I think the problem would've been solved if we'd had something like the Hori game pad back in the day, but those default controller joysticks were just too cheap and easily ruined by that raft minigame.

This game is awesome to play, but its price... Its like, $800. How do you get your games, Glenn? All my games I've got like 10 years ago.
The biggest problem with Mario Party is they basically started coming out with a new one nearly every year especially on the GameCube. Mario Party series should have been treated like the Mario Kart and Super Smash series in that they only release one a console. I never really saw the point of Mario Party 3 on the n64 considering it came out just 5-6 months before the GameCube was released in NA. The fact that Mario Party 9 did not contain internet multi-player is just inexcusable. The good news is that they have dramatically slowed the release of new Mario Party games and finally MP10 looks like it is going to have internet multi-player.

my only complaint about the first Mario Party is that I thought there were too many mini games where all you did was collect coins. Mario Party 2 was my favorite in the series.

Oh man this game gave me sore thumbs. I remember my friends and I always winded up playing skateboard scamper with either all of us falling or the lousy victory call at the end. All it needed was the DuckTales theme and would of been perfect lol

personly i prefere mushroom mix up and running with the bulb standing on the edge in mushroom mix up not letting your friends get on oh and that feeling when your the one with the bulb and all your friends have been possed by the boos and your like nooo

My hands got blisters from the N64 controller joystick playing this game with my friends as a kid. Never will forget that. Loved Mario Party games but they are bad on N64 controllers if you ask me, so I won't buy them for this reason.

Never was a big fan of the Mario Party games. Even with a group of people it just was kind of meh to me.
this game was really fun but due to its stick spinning minigames i prefer 1 and 2 more 4 was bland 5 was good played only one of 6 or 7 cant remmember which and thought it was generic as heck(it was the one without microphone support) 8 was fun with wii mote 9 was horrible due to the changes to the whole game i like inavation and god knows after 9 games it needed it but that was some of worst choices they could have done for a competitive game ever your all moveing together dam no choices to be made about were to go or any strategy and with one mini game near the end giveing a huge number of the games points torwards winning it does not even really matter much your skill at the rest of the minigame i have dominated the whole game lost that one and went to 3rd and could not recover even though i was winning all the games
