Nothing will ever replace the experience of just walking into a mall, school, airport, etc just to find like 20 miis in your plaza. This did, but still, nothing will replace that
Yeah but that depends on the places you live at. I took my 3DS into so many places, to cities with several 100k people (and even live in a big city) and yet I maybe managed to meet less than 10 Miis, including the few times I went to McD or a gas station (I usually don't visit those places) that had the ability to store a mii at Ninteno Zone or something. It's so absurd that I once met a Mii in the street I live at and once in a special clinic for rather older people in a smaller town.

Though I doubt I'll hack my new 3ds anytime soon, I could revive one of my older 3ds for online streetpass.

I wound up becoming kind of a local StreetPass kingpin, always hitting up a bunch of the stores with relay points when I had some free time. I must have been in their systems constantly, always appearing on other patrons' Mii Plazas.

I live in a country where the nintendo consoles were not really popular (and we had no official distribution of nintendo consoles) so it was a really great joy when I got a streetpass once in a while. Then I went on a trip abroad to the disneyland in Paris and I felt so overwhelmed with joy that each time I took my 3DS out in a queue I had a new streetpass notification. It was nuts - one of the best memories from my childhood.
I also love playing weird shovelware ds games just before I go out to make the other people wonder, "why did he play that?" Or "what on earth is that game"
in theory it can be done if the app loads the game list with names and icons and lets the player pick the last played game of their choice, before sending that streetpass data, but it might be a lot of work (for the dev)
I used to take all four of my 3DSs on my daily train commute - all charged and ready to give random streetpassers loads of juicy hits. My main system had a launch-day account and I managed to 100% the puzzle pieces quite early (until new puzzle boards came out) - and my other systems fed off it nicely until they too were 100%'d. Mine's definitely Tomodachi Life, sending out your children on adventures and getting letters from them was really cool, especially since you'd probably never see them again.
Man, here in the UK, the spotpass locations (your local coffee shops, game shops, basically any free public Wi-Fi zone) went from being all over the country, to being a GAME (shop) exclusive feature which is what killed streetpassing in the UK. Glad to see it’s being revived to a realistic outing online now
About time Edit: if memory serves, what this DOES actually replace are streetpass relay locations, the big change now is it can be done from anywhere with a wifi hotspot as opposed to your local mcdonalds or Best Buy (or regional equivalents)
@@NottJoeyOfficial ever since the relays went down I couldn’t get any more streetpasses, chiefly in part to where I live and not having any nearby conventions that aren’t within a decent distance from me. Didn’t stop me from trying
I live in a small town... I rarely got streetpass even when the 3DS was popular. I even worked in a nerdy shop, I'd bring the 3ds to work with me and get maybe 5 passes mostly from the same people... Though one time I went on vacation to the 3ds' homeland, and my streetpass would be full the moment I sat down on the metro... I'd greet everyone at the plaza and got the notification I had 10 new street pass visitors..
Where StreetPass really succeeded was Japan. The culmination of a strong yen at the time of the console's launch, with a high density of 3DS owners, have contributed to higher 3DS sales in Japan than in America.
I want Switch 2 to have Joycon street pass. You carry your joycon in your pocket and it street passes with others. Then you go home and put the data in your switch.
I used to take my 3DS to PAX West and I'd get the full green light right after stepping out of my hotel. Downtown Seattle was maggoty with StreetPasses. But after coming home and keeping my 3DS in my bag going to and from work, I'd be lucky if I'd get one pass in a month.
I'm so disappointed by Nintendo. The Switch's success speaks for itself, why did they not add more features than simply "run game"? We already lost stereoscopic 3d, augmented reality, home screen customisation and a load of other features the 3ds had. At least give us streetpass and plaza.
I think having no/low passes is a fine thing for the app! I mean, even in the midst of high school when the 3DS was at its most popular I'd tend to only get 1 or 2 passes if I was lucky or else I'd just get none! The Streetpass worked because it was always a pleasant surprise. Being able to force 10+ passes a day feels like it totally misses the point.
Especially cool when you think abut returning functionality to games like Pokémon ORAS with the Eon ticket, what the homebrewing community can do astounds and impresses me at every turn
Even when the 3DS was popular, I only got none to very few people a week in my rurual town which was an absolute slog to get through Streetpass Mii Plaza games. I really wished something like this was here from the start, this MASSIVELY helps since I'm able to net much more people at once. Lol
the switch 2 should come with a keychain device that gathers streetpasses while you're away, because the switch is too big for most peeps to carry around like a phone or old handheld. anyway, so when you get back and turn our switch on, the streetpasses from the keychain device get dumped to the switch and there you go. though the switch should be able to collect streetpasses itself too for when it is brought with you. but i think my keychain idea would be a HUGE hit. with such a small convenient device, and the massive popularity of the switch, streetpasses will come flooding in for many years even on small simple trips like going to pick up some mcd in the drive thru.
I used to do more or less the same thing by spoofing my Router's address; you could make the 3DS think that it was connecting to a WiFi network in New York or Paris or wherever, and you could make Street Pass connections with folks at these real world locations from the comfort of your living room. :)
What they really need to do is recreate the old Streetpass relays - I still have my old Raspberry Pi waiting for a revival of the Spillpass that I used to use for a streetpass relay in my own home.
To be honest I think streetpass should be on mobile phones because everyone takes them on the go so they can meet new people and get data on games and social media.
I remember back when I had just gotten my first 3DS, McDonalds was still tied into the whole "Nintendo World" thing, making it easier to get 3DS online in their restaurants. It was also nice, because with street pass, it would cache the people who had visited, and when someone new connected, they would get those people as streetpass hits. Honestly, I feel NetPass should be more like that; it was a guaranteed hit if you went there. Was a great option for someone like me who lived in a rural town; McDonalds was a big spot because everyone went there at least _sometime._
I think that the luck thing is awesome for replicating the feeling, but I think that each “area” should offer a scaling chance of connection. Maybe have a Train Station have the most connections and have an area, maybe “rural” or “school” where you get a more relaxed flow of street passes. This is obviously not a serious issue, but it’d be fun for replicating the feeling of Streetpass.
NetPass is pretty huge for Yo-kai Watch fans! There are Yo-kai who are exclusive to StreetPass that more fans will finally have an opportunity to befriend!
This is genuinely so cool though! Like for years I always wondered "man with how ahrd it is to get streetpass nowadays I wonder if it`s possible for some modders to make it easier to get via like online stuff" and what do you know it`s now finally possible!
i miss the early 2010’s, getting at least 20 streetpass miis just from going to the mall, nintendozone. my first 3ds was an aqua blue one from launch day and that’s long gone, my daily driver is a grey n3dsxl. 10 years ago i’d get about 5-10 streetpasses a day, now i got a total of 1 in 3 months. 😭
StreetPass is right up there with a microphone and camera as a feature that I think would really make the Switch successor feel both like a step up from the Switch as well as even closer to a perfect, more quintessential Nintendo system.
@Jon, I agree, it's very strange that the Switch doesn't have streetpass. I have a theory that perhaps the Switch, while insanely innovative, had a bit of a rushed production in order to quickly fix the damage the Wii U did on Nintendo's image. That, paired with Iwata's passing, just took away some of the magic that Nintendo put into the Wii U and 3ds home menus/applications.
Last streetpass I got from a stranger and not from my other 3ds was at Downtown Disney in February 2022. I’ve taken it a lot of places since and haven’t gotten any natural streetpasses.
A few weeks ago me and my family went to Seattle for spring vacation and it was really fun! (I even got a tour of NOA and got a gold edition version of the Super Mario Movie vinyl but that's not what I want to talk about.) We went to downtown Seattle and went to the public market there and before we left to go I put my 2DS in my coat pocket. When we got back into the train that took us there I pulled out my 2DS and saw the "green (it was actually rainbow because had a modded 2DS but I'll gloss over that too) light of destiny." And I hadn't gotten one but two streetpasses not from Washington but... Colorado and Texas????? What?
this is amazing i finally got my girlfriend a 3ds charger but her’s isn’t modding but being able to actually actually “play” streetpass games or send each other mario maker levels is awesome i was hoping someone would do this
A good idea would be locations that guarantees hits consistently for the function, and luck based locations that have the experience of finding an actual streetpass, best of both worlds
I would love to see a "boosted" street pass. Maybe it could look at where you were, and see if there is a anyone else within X kilometers of you. So instead of having to walk right past someone you could just be in the same area. For example, if login to the wifi at a local coffeeshop, maybe it would notice that someone up the road also has a 3DS and do a pass that way. OR maybe it would notice that someone had been at the coffee shop last week, and do a street pass that way.
I think a fun way to replicate the street pass online would be to have a small game where you have a limited amount of time to walk around with other users. Well, other users and NPCs. If you walk past a user, you get a streetpass but you don't for an NPC. It would probably play with the population numbers to balance the feeling of stumbling on a player randomly, but players would be less likely overall. That alone i feel like would help balance feeling like you stumble on people and not. Though, the idea could be further expanded by making it so that you're encoruaged to go to certain spots in the game to do some tasks otherwise you'll lose a portion of the streetpasses you could've gotten for that play session. That way you have to balance doing things and trying to bump into other users. It would probably end up feeling somewhat arcady, but it might be a fun game-ified way to do online streetpass. Though, the app should probably have a cool down period before you can play it again. And options for specifics and stuff.
I've never taken my 3ds out in public before, as here in Australia, getting a streepass would be even more rare than in more populated countries, like the uk and us. That being said, I did find someone using a 3ds at a bus stop a while back, but I didn't have my 3ds on me :(
This is a godsend. Edit: Installed it, tried the Train Station, checked 12 hours later and met 2 people. It'll be cool if future updates showed something else besides the netpass app as the last played game for new miis in the plaza. But this is a start. Hopefully it gets more popular.
I just got 6 Radom people on my Mii plaza from Spotpass just now thanks to you! I installed Netpass on my 3DS now almost every 4 or 5 minutes I keep getting more Notifications from Spotpass I’m going to Mario Maker 3DS so I can play them!!
6:20 hmm, maybe a solution to this could be having different “places” give different results? Like with Train Station it’s guaranteed you’ll always get a lot of StreatPasses but with someplace like say Mall it’s more like you get 1-2 Passes, making it more akin to real life? And Plaza gives something more in-between. Not sure how well that would work but would be interesting for people who want a more true to life experience vs a funcional experience
i remember as a little kid, before i ever fully understood what streetpass WAS, id just have my 2ds on sleep mode whilst we were driving thru the city to save battery (i played the SHIT out of it:)) and getting the green light, and before i knew it i got to play a game i barely understood but was fun. fast forward to about three years ago, lockdown was a thing and id got a 3ds by that point and i LOVED it, and i was sad that streetpass was dying:( cos i understood it now, so i took my ds EVERYWHERE when we were allowed on walks and spent hundreds in playcoins getting through streetpass quest. i miss that:( and while im glaf i got to experience streetpass in both ways, i wish i understood it better cos i was lucky to live in a city where it was sooo popular
I remember when the 3DS came out, many kids in my neighbor hood had one including me. We were always walking around trying to earn those tokens and sending eachother Swapnotes! Good times!
I've been thinking for a very long time that the Switch should have a green tree on the home menu next to the red news icon, yellow eShop, and blue album. The colors would work pretty well :) Sequels for previous Streetpass games would be great too if it ever happens, gathered around a large tree; Feed Mii 2, Find Mii 3, etc., so hopefully the next Switch (Not sure what it'll be called) has streetpass in some form.
I've been on netpass for less than a day and got 3 streetpasses so far Inc one for Yo kai watch, I wouldn't worry about it replacing going out there to try and get a streetpass because technically netpass works in a very similer way as Nintendos old streetpass relays that were around between 2014 and 2018
I am sort of hoping both Netpass (and maybe Nintendo) will move the ability to get streetpass hits to a phone companion app. Instead of having to specifically plan to carry your device you carry your phone with BT enabled around, and if two apps meet they'll exchange a handshake and trigger a pass, which then gets downloaded to the proper device whenever it boots back up. For Nintendo itself that would be pretty trivial to do for a Switch 2, as they already have a companion app anyway and moving a bit of data around would be nothing. For Netpass it would be harder but also not entirely impossible.
I streetpassed a ton on my old 3DS that I sold sadly during covid. Actually, they were from my aqua blue 3DS! However, I have a moded 2DS XL and my 3DS XL was moded for a while and I've been getting more passes on those.
This would make getting unique streetpasses for Pandanoko (and Starry Noko in Yo-Kai Watch 3) way easier, because the only way to get them is to pass with people and get lucky
I carry around my old DSI XL every day, but can't afford to fix my 3ds so I don't streetpass with it. Living right next to a really nerdy college would probably give me a fair shot of getting streetpassed!
I remember when people used to make pirate radio broadcasts of streetpass data so they could bypass having to walk around past random people. For rural areas, it was basically their only option.

Fire Emblem Awakening still has my favorite streetpass functionality. The ability to fight and recruit your friend's avatars is so cool.
Mine's definitely Tomodachi Life, sending out your children on adventures and getting letters from them was really cool, especially since you'd probably never see them again.
I personally prefer Fates' version of this, but honestly streetpass is such a bop, especially with Tomodachi Life
Getting it right now - see you folks at the Train Station!
I got there earlier this morning, BTW.
Man, here in the UK, the spotpass locations (your local coffee shops, game shops, basically any free public Wi-Fi zone) went from being all over the country, to being a GAME (shop) exclusive feature which is what killed streetpassing in the UK. Glad to see it’s being revived to a realistic outing online now
About time
Edit: if memory serves, what this DOES actually replace are streetpass relay locations, the big change now is it can be done from anywhere with a wifi hotspot as opposed to your local mcdonalds or Best Buy (or regional equivalents)
I loved streetpass relay, I saw so many less passes once it went down in 2018.
Then you go home and put the data in your switch.
that's actually a really good idea
The only time I'm saying this unironically...
Nintendo, hire this man!
@@NotArmani31 hire this man...as a janitor.
why joycons specifically? the switch is portable
@@gamertypeawesomeit’s more pocket sized
I used to take my 3DS to PAX West and I'd get the full green light right after stepping out of my hotel. Downtown Seattle was maggoty with StreetPasses. But after coming home and keeping my 3DS in my bag going to and from work, I'd be lucky if I'd get one pass in a month.
Really good point on how the 3DS gave you reason to take it with you regardless of whether or not you planned on gaming
I love the randomness of this, tbh. It would be overwhelming having a constant 10 new people in the queue
Streetpass using the Internet? Awesome! We can finally share our Mario Maker 3DS levels online with others, even if it is a little different!
I was convinced the switch lite was going to resurrect street pass or make an equivalent service... I was wrong.
"When you're at the strain station, you're stuck at the station for ten hours"
...sounds pretty realistic, tbh.
Finally I might be able to complete my last couple of puzzles.
Jon needs to just have a channel where he just reads books out loud lol
Especially cool when you think abut returning functionality to games like Pokémon ORAS with the Eon ticket, what the homebrewing community can do astounds and impresses me at every turn
Even when the 3DS was popular, I only got none to very few people a week in my rurual town which was an absolute slog to get through Streetpass Mii Plaza games. I really wished something like this was here from the start, this MASSIVELY helps since I'm able to net much more people at once. Lol
I've had a 3DS since launch, but I live in the rural south of the USA, so I never used Street Pass. Looking forward to finally checking it out
This is very fun but PLEASE still bring your 3ds as much as you can out and about
I might even be able to get an Eon Ticket in Alpha Sapphire
the switch 2 should come with a keychain device that gathers streetpasses while you're away, because the switch is too big for most peeps to carry around like a phone or old handheld. anyway, so when you get back and turn our switch on, the streetpasses from the keychain device get dumped to the switch and there you go. though the switch should be able to collect streetpasses itself too for when it is brought with you. but i think my keychain idea would be a HUGE hit. with such a small convenient device, and the massive popularity of the switch, streetpasses will come flooding in for many years even on small simple trips like going to pick up some mcd in the drive thru.
I used to do more or less the same thing by spoofing my Router's address; you could make the 3DS think that it was connecting to a WiFi network in New York or Paris or wherever, and you could make Street Pass connections with folks at these real world locations from the comfort of your living room. :)
Rad as hell! I heard the news but didn’t set it up until today. Hopefully I match up with you, Jon!
i would be so hyped for Streetpass to come back. I’ll check this out. Thanks for covering homebrew GVG!
street pass on modern gaming devices would be neat. it's something that's still quite unique to consoles over PC and is a real neat experience.
What they really need to do is recreate the old Streetpass relays - I still have my old Raspberry Pi waiting for a revival of the Spillpass that I used to use for a streetpass relay in my own home.
tested and can made this varous times during the day, can made 5 to 20 per day
nice moment for complete the 3ds street plaza
Has it been confirmed that this is Jon’s channel yet?
This literally was John's channel originally
@@jetsurge250 Full circle moment!
Literally since day 1.
🔫
Always has been
I wish it still was just his
I 100% finished the bravely default and bravely second town things by just leaving my 3ds on 24/7 while I played
I clocked in around 4000 streetpass hits back in the day. I really miss those days. I went to tokyo last year and only got 2 hits! Crazy.
Well, NetPass is still quite new. I believe the team responsible for it is working on that.
If smartphones and Nintendo Switch had Streetpass functionality we would already be in 3024...
I believe smartphones are the ideal devices for StreetPass. Too bad Nintendo seemingly abandoned mobile development...
@@WRILLI4Mor abandoning it
NetPass is pretty huge for Yo-kai Watch fans! There are Yo-kai who are exclusive to StreetPass that more fans will finally have an opportunity to befriend!
I just got a street pass locally today.
It was legendary.
My favorite streetpass days were going to PAX East back in the day!!! SOOOOOOO Many street passing!!!!! It was awesome!
Just went to the mall and got one instantly. Amazing! I only need six more puzzle pieces and I'll have completed them all.
Ok wait this is actually huge
Addicted to Jon's 3DS videos atm.
What?
Be Fr omg I can get some islanders
this is amazing i finally got my girlfriend a 3ds charger but her’s isn’t modding but being able to actually actually “play” streetpass games or send each other mario maker levels is awesome i was hoping someone would do this
A good idea would be locations that guarantees hits consistently for the function, and luck based locations that have the experience of finding an actual streetpass, best of both worlds
I can finally use the streetpass, this is a dream come true :). Thank you ✨✨
I once had a 2DS and I bringed it to the Ai-Kon convention sometime in 2018-2019. I got lots of StreetPasses.
That being said, I did find someone using a 3ds at a bus stop a while back, but I didn't have my 3ds on me :(
Go to Pax West this year and attend streetpass live!
Just went to C2E2 and got 2 new streetpass miis in my plaza I freaked out each time I noticed
I went to an anime convention and it’s the only place I’ve found that’s still popping with streetpassers. I got 20 miis from that weekend
I had a 3ds since 2013 and never knew what Streetpass was till after the Switch came out.
i remember as a little kid, before i ever fully understood what streetpass WAS, id just have my 2ds on sleep mode whilst we were driving thru the city to save battery (i played the SHIT out of it:)) and getting the green light, and before i knew it i got to play a game i barely understood but was fun. fast forward to about three years ago, lockdown was a thing and id got a 3ds by that point and i LOVED it, and i was sad that streetpass was dying:( cos i understood it now, so i took my ds EVERYWHERE when we were allowed on walks and spent hundreds in playcoins getting through streetpass quest. i miss that:( and while im glaf i got to experience streetpass in both ways, i wish i understood it better cos i was lucky to live in a city where it was sooo popular
I’m so glad I saw this video, I’ve been wanting to use streetpass so much more
Wow. I love so much the 3ds homebrew community! Good job keeping the 3ds alive, awesome and relevant.
I remember when the 3DS came out, many kids in my neighbor hood had one including me. We were always walking around trying to earn those tokens and sending eachother Swapnotes! Good times!
I logged in today and went to the arcade, and immediately got 5 tags. This is super cool!
I've been thinking for a very long time that the Switch should have a green tree on the home menu next to the red news icon, yellow eShop, and blue album. The colors would work pretty well :)
Sequels for previous Streetpass games would be great too if it ever happens, gathered around a large tree; Feed Mii 2, Find Mii 3, etc., so hopefully the next Switch (Not sure what it'll be called) has streetpass in some form.
I wish I had seen this video before I bought a 2nd 3DS to streetpass myself in Bravely default. Thanks for the video!
OMG I've been waiting for this FOREVER
Thank you very much for that info!
i wish Streetpass returned to the Switch 2, & while the Local Nature is what makes it great, i love that there is an Online edition
I really like those Zelda Amiibo statues in the background.
3DS Streetpass got at least revived, we can die in peace now ❤🔥
I streetpassed a ton on my old 3DS that I sold sadly during covid.
I’ve always adored street pass and said how we need to keep it alive at all costs. This is HUGE 🥰✨
I carry around my old DSI XL every day, but can't afford to fix my 3ds so I don't streetpass with it. Living right next to a really nerdy college would probably give me a fair shot of getting streetpassed!
