    Great video, but as a note, from what I know in aerospace, you do not inherently need an afterburner to be supersonic. It just generally helps as it vastly boosts thrust output, albeit at a significantly increased fuel use.

    Grom appears to be an upgraded version of the Soviet Tu141 reconnaissance drone from 1970s. For reference, Tu141 is the drone which Ukraine (unsuccessfully) used in 2022 & 2023 to strike Moscow.

      @@Aar1sW The strike that caused very minor damage to Kremlin's rooftop was caused by a very small drone with a limited range that was launched from somewhere inside Moscow. Nobody claimed responsibility for that, and many believe that it was a false flag operation since Russia has jammers around Kremlin & such basic drones will never get close to it, and even if so would never do any damage. On the other hand, the Tu 141 drone is very large & Ukrainian modifications allows it to carry very large payloads that can easily cause a massive damage to such building. All were taken out with air defenses, and their falling debris damaged some buildings nearby. To put matters into perspective, a single Tu141's falling debris did hundreds of times more damage than whatever tiny drone did on that questionable successful strike.

      @@WhiteWolf65 To be honest it is pointless to talk about the name it'll adopt considering that Russians have great design bureaus but terrible outdated manufacturing capabilities that are 40+ years behind and cannot build items with good designs. As a result, Russians have 2 types of designs: (1) Designs that never leave the prototype phase because they simply cannot manufacture them in high numbers or for cheap. Some examples include the Su75 Checkmate, PAK DA, T14 Armata, Arena APS, Modular Infantry armor system & S70 Stealth drone. (2) Designs in which the designers have lowered their standards to match manufacturing capabilities which create feasible yet terrible products. Su57 is a fine example, which is a stealth jet with exposed rivets because Russian manufacturers cannot produce refined flush products (nowadays even some western civilian airliners are built with non exposed rivets). This product seems to be similar to Su57: Made for ease of manufacturing but it sucks. The designers know this. The production knows this. The army knows this. It won't reach mass production. The only place it will go would be a museum. Russian products that don't reach mass production either don't get Tu/Su designations (get a project number instead) or get a numerically high one (i.e. Mig 1.44)

      I mean funding priority is a Thing. Russia cannot compete outside of it's territorial waters. It's Navy is not a good investment. Notice it's Ice breaker fleet probably beats the rest of the world combined, and drones can be used for near shore sea control.
      Don't get me wrong I doubt this has 1/45th the promised capabilities. But you should not assume its other industries are as bad as it's surface naval fleet. They've historically had a terrible surface Navy but good designers who have to work within their limitations, and you can accomplish a lot woth one great software team and tech assistance from China with domestic basic air design competence.

    • @finnmcool2
      @finnmcool2 16 днів тому

      @@doomedwit1010 I just think this is another example of them pointlessly competing with the west. They do much better when they focus on what they need and ignore what the US and NATO are doing. Russia pretty much created cryo-medicine as one example.
      Their performance in Ukraine has shown conclusively that their military is not up to a 21st century standard. Hence, they would be better served focusing on conventional military measures rather than high tech propaganda toys. Combining the missions of navy and coast guard would give them more bang for the buck than the steady parade of concept aircraft they lack the ability to actually field.
      Even before the Ukraine debacle Russia was barely in the top 5 nations in terms of force projection. Now they can barely be put in the top 10 only for their aging submarine fleet. India has an order of magnitude more capability, for example. It's time for Russia to give up the play acting and focus on building real defense capability.

    I feel like this is something that has some extreme potential. And not just in the typical more bullets sense. And I feel it's severely underestimated even by those that see it's beneficial traits.
    Let's start with it not being stealth.
    A bunch of stuff all at once in an area will probably show up in one way or another on radar. Not having a stealth kit provides a few advantages in cost, and tactics.
    One escorting a stealth fighter will act as a decoy target allowing stealth assets to ambush those that try to meet it in the sky.
    Several of them especially with jamming tech and varied offensive systems creates a defensive bubble of 45 targets at maximum projections, with the main computer and pilot being stealth, 4 'captains' that jam, and the 40 'fighters' that actively engage. This creates a digital AND physical nightmare for any small outfit to deal with. Solo planes would have 0 chance.
    This exact setup actually would enable our 'bad for dog fighting' stealth jets to re enter that ring as well....
    On the more bullets end. This is an INSANE weapons platform if you look at the unit and not the individual drone. 10 in bomber load config of some sort, 10 in pure offensive air to air configs, and 10 in a more balanced standard config, with the remainders serving in varied specializations (say maneuverability for a few, information tech for a few more ECT). This is basically an air force base worth of options under the control of one pilot, and that's before you look at nuclear and soft target options....
    And all of this before you decide to do per mission configurations. Or think about 55 even small machine guns being focus targeted on one objective.
    How are people not taking this seriously?? I know every tech has drawbacks. But this concept is absolutely cracked, and fascinates the hell out of me.

    • @FrontLinePub
      @FrontLinePub 17 днів тому +1

      People automatically dismiss what they don't understand or if they hear the word Russia or China.
      If this war continues a few more years. The amount of testing and data they'll achieve will greatly enhance whatever future UCAV or UAV platform they create next.
      A LOT of the weapon platforms we would use in a war over Taiwan are not going to be nearly as effective as we thought. The PLA has had years of watching these systems being used in Ukraine and is actively developing countermeasures to defeat them.

    • @Statueshop297
      @Statueshop297 16 днів тому

      Why don’t people take it seriously?
      One reason is Russia is constantly announcing super new weapons that never even reach the drawing board.
      Another is lots of nations are already developing these and are developing counters to it.
      Another reason is the cost to make a decent system. Russia isn’t exactly rolling in cash for the war it has and all the other projects that are running.
      Another reason is the ability to produce all the parts and technology in country. Before the war nearly all new Russian military projects were using a lot of technology from abroad.
      So if we see squadrons of these being made and suitable control aircraft to operate them then people will believe it. Until then it’s just another one of these many projects announced but not actually made.

    • @FrontLinePub
      @FrontLinePub 16 днів тому +1

      @Statueshop297 Those are good points. I think we also forget that China is also helping Russia with filling in gaps in their supply chain. Even India is taking on huge amounts of Russian energy, then processing it and reselling it to eager buyers in Europe.
      When you look at the F-35 Lightnings. We have some issues we laugh at the Russians about. Nearly $2 trillion in R&D and production of this aircraft and close to half of them are down for software or mechanical issues. It's frustrating to see how even the US with an endless budget is still having issues like this.
      The US spends $800+ billion annually in peacetime on our military and look at the state of our readiness and the value of what this budget actually provides.
      All of NATO combined doesn't even amount to half of our budget. It makes you wonder perhaps we are spending money on fancy gold-plated weapon systems when in reality we should spend more like our European partners.
      They live next to Russia and clearly even they don't think it's a grave enough threat that they need to increase their military to protect against. Heck, the UK 🇬🇧 has actually shrunk the size of their military during this war and their defense budget hasn't increased above inflation, resulting in them spending less now than before the Russians invaded.

Perhaps it is not the kind of thing that could tip the scales in a war against a top tier adversary, or even against a second tier adversary with moderate sophistication (like Iran). But what if you were some country that has to fight a war against an adversary that really has no air or anti-air dimension at all? This version of the Grom is the kind of thing you can sell to countries like Sudan or Mali. They do not have a large cohort of trained pilots to do air strikes, not would they want to risk them getting shot down. But training guys to operate drones is much easier. With one of these things, you could provide air support strikes to your meager troops in the field, and not have to worry to much, since this thing is probably more than any insurgents can deal with, even if they have a MANPADS that could threaten an attack helicopter or a slow-moving (prop driver) fixed wing strike aircraft (whether manned or unmanned).

    This loyal wingman concept might be the single worst idea any human has ever had. A few years ago I thought the singularity sounded like nonsense conspiracy talk. So here’s what we’re doing right now: building an airborne robot general covered in missiles, which could very easily be converted into a stealth general with somewhat fewer missiles, and teaching it how to command an army of mindless kamikaze robots. I can’t possibly see any way this could backfire
