Thanks Dale. Back in the 80's I had HO. Dad had the Lionel and I got to play with the Marx stuff, but I hardly ever did because the HO looked so much "to scale". Now I'm slowly getting my mind changed when you find the right "O" stuff!! 1 Million Subs? I would fall out of my chair if I had 50K :-)
Congratulations on the million views Ron! Another great video! I even got my folks watching ya. We enjoy your humor and seeing what you are tearing into. Keep it up, and have a wonderful new year
Just ran into the stuck motor shaft myself on a 2344 NYC F3. This one belonged to my dad, which I had recently acquired. I know for a fact that it had not been out of the box and run in about 40 years. Yours probably had been sitting for years too. I put a drop or two on the shaft and let it sit. When I came back to it, the shaft started to turn. With a little work, back to normal. Keep up the great work!
The timing of this video was absolutely perfect. I have a 1948 '675' 2-6-2 that stopped working. It was working but then stopped. Then it had the transformer smoking a little bit. I am hoping it just heated it up a little bit and did not burn it out. I do have a backup transformer if needed. I think I know what my project for this weekend is. Thanks for sharing!
Oh WOW!! I always hate the smell of "getting too hot electrics". Hope the transformer and the armature windings survived. Should be a pretty straight forward repair and a rewarding conclusion for sure!!
Nice restoration Ron. You're right that is a damn nice locomotive. I've got some nice O gauge in my collection that i have to break out. Hello to Peggy.
My favorite postwar engine. I have pulled 15 freight cars and 5 passenger cars and could probably pull more but I haven't tried. That was on MTH Realtrax which doesn't work with Magnitraction. The Hudsons and Turbines pull good too but the 736 sure looks good. Nice smoker. Great video.
Loved the photo shoot. Thank you for a great video and introducing your wife to us. I am familiar with diamond art and the patience it takes to make them. That is one great picture she made for you. Looking forward to your next video. 33%
Thanks for your awesome response to the video and your support of the channel. I cant believe how the Little Lady can get those done. I would quit about 1/4 way thru. Next video is about 1/2 way done. Waiting for a boiler shell to show up.
Congratulations Ron on 1 million views you deserve it and hope you’ll soon have that many subscribers 👍 Amazing job on the locomotive also and can’t believe you never worked on that before because you looked so comfortable and confident 27:04 working on it 👍 Great to see your lady too 😊
Behind every Great Model Railroader there is a woman who has the Bravery and Patience to allow them to enjoy the labors of that love. Nice seeing Peggy involved in Classic Model Trains with you, Ron and thanks for the Lionel 736 Refurb( now I know what to do properly)...love "The Rich Kid" name drop by the way cuz they were not cheap back in the day and those less fortunate could only drool at the Dept Store Windows!! Happy New Year and again Thanks for all you do!!
Thanks Yogi, Yes it is a blessing to have the little Lady supporting me doing this. Thank goodness Louis Marx was out there making trains for "The Working Man's" kids!!
I submit that Lionel is a world of its own. Lots of color, speed, noises, rattles, and fun. Lionel are the toys that made boys into men. Merry Christmas! You did another stupendous job on that Loco.💥
Experience.....the best teacher and most difficult, but well worth the time invested. Great job repairing a great locomotive! Tip 1:Use graphite powder (for door locks) on the E-unit shaft. It doesn't attract dirt like oil or grease and still stays slippery, so the pawl drops without binding. Tip 2. (For the repair beginners) Always use a plastic compatible oil from Labelle on the E-unit drum roller pins that hold it in place. I used motor oil once in a pinch, and it lasted for about a year before the round pins on the plastic drum contactor melted away and turned the ends of the drum contactor into goo. Then, I had to replace the entire drum contactor assembly with a new one, which taught me about era-specific drum contactors that came in different colors depending on the year of manufacture. Some purists have a fit if they see the wrong color drum in the E-unit
Graphite on e-unit sounds like a great idea to me, and That Mr. Experience........yes a great teacher for sure!! Thanks for stopping by for a view and a chat :-)
@@stevenwaller192 I sure did!! BUT.... I dont know what to make them out of. I want them blowing back while running and hanging loose when it's stopped. Sometimes I want what I cannot have ;-)

Nice you show the things that need attention and not dwell on the obvious stuff.😊😊😊😊 any body should be able to follow along and then do their own engine. That ultrasonic tank is worth it’s weight and saves so much time cleaning.😊😊 the plastic bag saves cleaning out the tank when done ……..good tip.😊 ya might need a bit of photo finesse but your handy work is spot on..

That was your most entertaining video yet! I thought that was a little Austin Powers recreation there. You did great on the tuneup. Very nice to see Peggy too. Congratulations on 1 million views. Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas Ron, congratulations on getting one of the best iconic models from the postwar era. It is much easier to restore than those HO models you restore. You know what they say? Once you go O there's no going back or maybe its O-gauge or no gauge. I might have gotten the sayings confused 😊. Maybe you could install a perimeter shelf or suspended ceiling layout to run her. That's a great looking picture. I can't say that I'm not a little envious. Large train themed pictures, especially steam engines, seem hard to find. There used to be train themed Christmas cards with vintage engines one could find at one time but no longer seem to exist either. Happy rails.
Hello Dale, Thanks for your compliments. I've though about a hanging loop above me. Might cover up my very top shelve of the train display, but it's doable for sure.
@classicmodeltrains I'll be watching for it. Incorporate the top shelf into the ceiling layout to double as engine storage. I built a ceiling layout along three walls of my layout below with isolated rail sections controlled by toggle switches every 30" to store engines or use as an upper track. I haven't completed the span section above my layout that crosses the open section below but the final plan is to create a lift section to lower engines from above to the layout below, like a carousel using my 2343 and pulleys to provide the heavy lifting for the lift section. This is turning out to be my long-range plans. I'm still working on my main layout.
Good repair and clean up on the 736 ! When you mentioned the family Christmas gathering, it reminded me of Robert Earl Keene's "Merry Christmas from the Family". Happy Holidays and keep up the fantastic work .
My Uncle Richard brought me one of those Lionel Berkshire sets. There's a flat car with that set. I was six years old then,... I'm seventy now. Wow 😲 I never thought I would see something about that Lionel.
@@classicmodeltrains Yes,.... Whistling and the front lamp and the magnetic wheels too,.. I have always wished I had had more track. I think that engine would pull twenty cars!! I've had another Railway Train that was Lionel. This was a General with a wood car and passenger cars. I liked that one too!
thank you as well. Yes the Little Lady keeps me fed and watered while I'm buried in the train cabin. I guess I would be malnourished with out her! And of course lonely as well ;-)
Great tutorial ,i have just picked one off these up ,the weight and build meant i just had to have it even though I don't have any other O Gauge ,now I can give the old girl a service , like your sense of humour so have now subscribed , that pictures great as well your very lucky to have a partner that appreciates your hobby , here in England we would say "That's Love Mate "👍
Thanks Colin for the nice words and a new Sub. Some American Model Toy (AMT) passenger cars will look amazing behind the loco and are easy to get into from the eBay. They are true "O" scale as well :-)
@@classicmodeltrains If I have another gauge I will be in real trouble for sure ,but that said I Am always anyhow . I will check em out and see if I can resist .Thanks .
Merry Christmas and Happy new year Ron. As usual another great video. You have helped me so much with my old Lionel engine’s. Oldest one was made 1937-1942. Had one made in 1924, trade train set to my cousin.
The 736 is a great loco. I prefer the earlier 726 that was very similar to it. While the 726 didn't have magnatraction, it did come with a beautiful die cast 12 wheel tender that is a very nice upgrade over the plastic one that the 736 had. Great loco, another great video, and a hello and holiday wishes to you and the Mrs.
@@classicmodeltrains the tender is a 2426w that was available with both the 726 and the big 773 Hudson. Beautiful tender. Pricey thing though. Happy hunting.
Wow, you are definitely a man of passion. The emphasis and humour you put into these videos is brilliant as well as educational. Happy New Year to you and your better half from a Brit who models American HO but appreciates other scales and there historical value
Thanks Chris! Happy new year to you and yours as well. Interesting you model American rail? I'm going to need a barn to house all the Gauges I seem to keep acquiring over here.
Another great video Ron! I watch all your videos all the way through. I love the old Lionels. I have bought several in similar shape and I have never had one not run like new after taking them apart, cleaning and applying new oil. It seems the old postwar locos are getting a bit easier to find at a good price. I look forward to your next rebuild! I usually take some flat black model paint on a brush and hit the spots where the paint has been rubbed away. Just enough to clean it up a bit. Give it a try and see what you think.
Thanks for your support of my channel Mike. I dont want to touch the paint on the Fancy Lionel's. Many of them I end up re-selling later on and to a Lionel collector, if you paint it even a little bit it's worthless. Now of course this loco has a lot of paint nicks on it and If I was to keep it I probably would go thru and touch up the nicks just a bit. If this was an entry level Lionel I probably would have stripped it and did a repaint, or small spot repair for sure. I agree with you that stuff is coming around a bit more and prices are getting lower. I fear that all the Fellers that had these squirreled away for years are passing on and the family's are selling them, so the market is getting flooded.
I had that but all I got is 0-27 curves. I need some larger curves for this big O-gauge stuff. I lost a Marx that had a fresh repaint on my 4x8 plywood portable table.
Hi, Peggy. Nice to meet you! Question for you, Ron. I noticed your fiberglass pen. The tip was black after you cleaned the motor? Do you continue to use it like that when you start another rebuild, or do you cut the black off and start afresh on a new motor? 🤔
Hello James, The fiberglass strands wear off very fast. I have never had to cut off contaminated material before. But I do have to say this was the worst commutator I have ever seen. I will pay attention and see if this now dirty pencil will contaminate the next commutator. Good question you had there Sir!
Mrs Hades is one of those who does the creative stuff like the diamond dot art. Did I understand you to say that you sent a picture in somewhere to be turned into a diamond dot pattern? Where would a guy do that?
Congrats Ron keep it up! Great video as usual! Btw, any tips to clean the wheels when they get that dark color? No idea what type of rust or build up that is. Mineral spirits, fiber brush? Thanks!
Thanks Mauricio! Are you referencing the wheel surface that rides on the rail? If its really bad I use a Dremel with a wire wheel chucked up into it. slow to medium speed. Just a little maintenance a q-tip and orderless mineral spirits to get the dirt off.
Hey Ron, thanks for the reply! Yeah I just got a new old loco and the surface is almost black on pretty much all wheels. The loco looks new but I guess if you store it for too long that could happen? Thanks for the tip, much appreciated!

Dude, last 33%…………..you’re not right! Love it! Work it, baby!
:-)
Very entertaining presentation, and CONGRATS on the million views! Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you very much Ean!
@@classicmodeltrains You're very welcome!
That was your most entertaining video yet! I thought that was a little Austin Powers recreation there. You did great on the tuneup. Very nice to see Peggy too. Congratulations on 1 million views. Happy New Year!
Thanks SFBob! H.N.Y. to you and yours as well
Merry Christmas Ron, congratulations on getting one of the best iconic models from the postwar era.
Happy Holidays. I love watching your videos. Here’s to the New Year. Cheers
Thanks Michael, Happy holidays to you and yours as well!
MERRY CHRISTMAS
Thanks Bobby! Hope yours was good as well
Nice video Ron. Hope you had a great 🎄 Christmas🎄.
Thanks Anthony! Hope yours was good also
Great video Ron.
Thank you!
Good repair and clean up on the 736 ! When you mentioned the family Christmas gathering, it reminded me of Robert Earl Keene's "Merry Christmas from the Family". Happy Holidays and keep up the fantastic work .
Thanks John. Is that a movie you referenced? If it is, most of the script was sourced from my family more than likely ;-)
My Uncle Richard brought me one of those Lionel Berkshire sets. There's a flat car with that set. I was six years old then,... I'm seventy now. Wow 😲 I never thought I would see something about that Lionel.
Thats a pretty good memory you have there. That train set must have really stuck out to you :-)
@@classicmodeltrains Yes,.... Whistling and the front lamp and the magnetic wheels too,.. I have always wished I had had more track. I think that engine would pull twenty cars!!
I've had another Railway Train that was Lionel. This was a General with a wood car and passenger cars. I liked that one too!
@@classicmodeltrains I think I will look to see if this locomotive has the same number. I was six or seven years old and that's 1960 or so.
Thank you for sharing. Enjoying your videos very much. It was nice to meet Peggy. What would we do without the support of our wives?👍
thank you as well.
Sweet running engine. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Thanks Ron, Hope yours goes well also !
Merry Christmas and Happy new year Ron. As usual another great video. You have helped me so much with my old Lionel engine’s. Oldest one was made 1937-1942. Had one made in 1924, trade train set to my cousin.
Hello Mike! Got some pre-war stuff I see? Glad to be of some help to you!!
You’re funny! A great work in a very nice video.
To kind Regis ;-)
merry xmas ron and happy new year
Thanks Peter! H.N.Y. to you as well
Merry Christmas and happy new year Ron and Peggy. Lovin' the railway "modelling" section!
Hope your Christmas was good to you. I decided to do something a little more fun with the photo shoot. So far all comments have been positive :-)
Great video
Thank you!
OOO! A Diecast 12 wheel tender??!!?? Now I must find one for my own!! Thanks and happy N.Y. to you and yours as well :-)
@@classicmodeltrains the tender is a 2426w that was available with both the 726 and the big 773 Hudson. Beautiful tender. Pricey thing though. Happy hunting.
Trying to get my hands on one of these myself!!
I couldn't believe I stumbled upon this one
great job
Thanks Greg
I fear that all the Fellers that had these squirreled away for years are passing on and the family's are selling them, so the market is getting flooded.
thanks man
Thanks for watching Joe :-)
ron put a oval of track on a sheet of plywood just stand it up when not in use
I had that but all I got is 0-27 curves. I need some larger curves for this big O-gauge stuff. I lost a Marx that had a fresh repaint on my 4x8 plywood portable table.
I always enjoy your vlogs ! You should teach other vlogers how to do it 1
Thank you Norman

@@mauriciodonato9720 the rolling stock wheels only need to be clean of dirt. They do not need to shine. They don’t pickup any juice.
Great video for Boxing Day!…
Thanks Thomas!
Green marker lamps indicate it is heading the second (or higher)section of a train.
I dont understand what your putting down. I though green meant it was actively moving. Red if it was stopped.
@@classicmodeltrains No - Green for second section with another section to follow, White for an extra. No bearing on whether or not the train is moving. Look up Train Dispatching plusd Markers
I have this locomotive and got it to pull 22 boxcars.Puffs smoke pretty good.
Right on!
