When I worked as a starter / marshal at a course I found several thousand balls of various brands and would take them out to the course when empty before closing it for the night for direct comparison by hitting straight, fade and draw shots to a green with a seven iron. The factors which affected ball flight the most where how compression and cover material because those two things cause the ball to grip and then spin off the face of the club. Premium balls like Pro V1 and Pro V1x have urethane outer levels which have a high coefficient of friction than the polymers used in the less expensive balls which translates into more backspin.
Backspin is the magic mojo that keeps the ball in the air like an airplane wing. The faster it spins the more lift it will create. The more lift you get out of a ball with a 180 yard approach shot to a tight green the greater the odds of the ball dropping on to it vertically with enough retained spin to make it check, one hop and stop. You can do that with a ProV1. Lesser balls without the same spin rates off the face? Not so much.
Backspin is also the magic mojo which allows the ball to fly straight, or be curved on a predictable flight plan. The spinning creates gyroscopic stability, something that anyone who has ridden a bicycle has experienced. It is the spinning of the wheels that makes the bike stable and the same is true of a golf ball. And like a wheel a ball needs to be in perfect balance to fly straight or be shaped consistently. Ben Hogan would use a mixture of water and epsom salts to float and spin by hand all the balls he used in competition, rejecting any that were out of balance. One of the reasons premium balls are more expensive is because more testing is done when they are manufactured ensure they are perfectly balanced and those which are not perfectly balances are rejected. Premium ball production has a higher reject / spoilage rate than lesser quality balls.
The biggest variable is the golfer. It takes a high swing velocity at impact to compress a ball optimally and most recreational golfers can’t stay in balance while producing it and therefore can’t deliver face to club consistently enough to make the margin of error created by there swing flaws greater than the difference between ball A and ball B. So for the beginner anything other than inexpensive balls is a huge waste of money until a round of golf can be played without losing any.
The best way to improve one’s swing is to play practice rounds from the front tees with just a 7 iron tee to green. Try that and you just might finish the round with the same ball you started with because like on the range hitting successive shots with the same club will make you aware of swing flaws and how to correct them. Then as you correct your swing flaws, stay in balance and start compressing the ball between you will find it flies, carries and rolls much differently as your swing improves. That’s the point where you should consider buying a box of premium balls and alternating between them and what you are playing. The ideal thing to do is to go to the course at mid day when not crowded and play two balls, bargain and premium for direct comparison. The premium ball because of the way it contacts the face and releases with more spin will be less forgiving of miss hits but that will help reveal the swing flaws the other balls had been masking.
I don't use them but I still get excited when I find a newish ProV1 in the rough.
great vid --- i find it fascinating that the way people look at the urethane performance balls is that they'll look for a ball that "checks up and not roll out" on greenside chips. I'm a low single-digit handicapper myself, and i find that one of the hardest things to do is to consistently strike a chip that has exactly the right check on it for the carry distance you guess at trying to go for the hole. With plenty of practice, it is nice to watch and fun to do, but on the flip side those ionomer cover balls just roll right out all the time, in a VERY predictable manner. You don't have one check up mysteriously, and then another one just roll out mysteriously, like urethane balls tend to do in the hands of folks who aren't highly proficient chippers of the ball. I understand that sometimes you'd like to have a ball that checks up in a tight situation, but there are just so few amateurs out there that understand how to control such a shot that it renders the ball performance both unpredictable and a waste of money. You don't have to spin a wedge 12,000 rpms to have an excellent short game.
Really do appreciate your relaxed confidence over a 3 or 4 foot put. Played AVX for a whole season, but this year I'm playing bright green WIlson Staff Duo Optix. I cannot find any differences in ShotScope data for 2020 and 2021 so far, but I'm now off 21 (best handicap was 13 back in 2008) so maybe, as you suggested, I don't have the skills to make or detect any differences.
One important difference is the maths: 12 AVX = 12 DUO Optix + 10 beers

I've been playing the Titleist TruFeel for quite a while now and it seems a perfect trade off between price, durability, spin and distance. Nice and soft around the greens and low spinning off the driver. What I learned after using mixed lake balls is that using the same ball all the time makes a big difference, no matter which brand the ball is.
Hi James thanks for the inspiration from yesterday's best ever score video,watched it then went out and scored 3 over for 9 holes with back to back birdies playing off 18 as you say confidence makes a massive difference, as for golf balls I use the Kirkland signature golf ball you reviewed and I find it checks up okay
James, it would be great for you to play comp each week with a different ball, including some of the budget balls you have reviewed, such as the Lidl Ball and the Costco Ball. It would be fascinating to see how different your score would be if you gamed a premium, mid-range and budget ball over different weeks. Good luck and thanks for the great content.
I’ve tried many different golf balls and finally just decided find one you like around the greens and stick with it. Playing the same ball eliminates at least one part of the consistency equation.

I haven't bought a golf ball in 6 years - yesterday found 3 Titleist Pro-V1x and Srixon AD333 - plus some Callaway bright orange ball which I gave to my buddy who actual buys them. I'm a 17 handicap been playing for 10yrs I am 71. Love you video's

I have been playing golf for approx. 4 months, and I have in that time tried a lot of different balls, callaway warbird, Callaway max, callaway super soft, Bridgestone Treosoft, all bought from new, and I have played the Pro v1 I have found on the field, and I can did not notice any difference in my game, I could instead notice a big difference in the wallet :). However, I can clearly hear the difference on the balls, especially when I put.
But heeey im 34 hcp :)
Have started using the ad333 this year as I wanted to get used to using the same ball all the time. Generally I have been really happy with them. The one down side I have seen compared to premium balls is durability. They mark up horribly out of bunkers. Clearly the answer is go in fewer bunkers but I suspect that is not going to disappear from my game any time soon. Interesting comparison that matches my own experience apart from the marking up issue.
Great video! The pro at my club always says that Pro V1s aren't suitable for anyone who plays game improvement clubs like Ping G series, as you won't get the clubhead speed to benefit from their advanced tech. The Srixon is a great mid-price ball, but there's a 3-piece option, Callaway CXR Control available for £16 a dozen from Sports D, which feel buttery around the greens.
I think if you're paying less than £20 for a round of golf, you don't want your golf ball cost (in lost balls) to be anywhere near your outlay for green fees.
I'm a high handicap beginner, when I started using just one type of ball I went with the Srixon soft feels, I really loved the way they felt off the face, low spin, but very tricky around the greens, I was paying $20/ doz on amazon, they ended up being out of stock for a few weeks so I switched to Callaway Supersoft about a month and a half ago and they are fantastic for the way I play, low spin, but still nicely controllable around the green. I found the supersofts for $19.97 at Walmart
I find all the recent golf ball analysis interesting. I love the feel of Pro Vs off my Scotty. I use Snell balls and TP5s and Pro V1s. Tried the TP5x yesterday and really really enjoyed it off the tee with my 3 wood (couldn’t hit my Driver for shite!). Flew well, great stopping power, etc. I have played the NV from Srixon and really liked that ball, and the yellow version. I think, for the money, really hard to beat that Snell ball.
First to post today. I have been testing the ProV1, Prov1x and the Vice Pro + for about a month. I have “settled” on the ProV1, but truth be told, I could pick any of them and play a good round. For me it just comes down to feel off the wedges and putter. Great video James.
James, great channel. I was playing a used Srixon Q.Star ball over the past few years. Picked Q’s based on how they play in the wind, less dispersion, green side performance. Went to used or reclaimed balls from a chap about 45 minute drive away. 5 dozen for about $50 Cdn so about 90 cents/ball. New a dozen with tax is $40. I’m a high handicap (flirt with 90 a few times a season on good days). I find these are a good performing ball and are good value. My supplier has the balls sorted by brand/type Pro V1s, Srixon Z and Q Stars, Srixon Other balls, Callaway, etc. You can either take the dozens as he has bundled or go thru and pick your own. I do the latter and very happy with this process. I may see him every second or third season. Keep up the great content!
Srixon soft feel and TaylorMade burner are my favourites cuz that’s what I was using for my hole in ones. Honourable mention to Bridgestone e6 and e12 as well for a good mid range ball. 15 hcp with regular swing speed. Enjoy your videos James cheers from 🇨🇦⛳️🍻
I used Pro V 1 golf balls when I was tn single figures and I could get it to stop on a sixpence and also great around the greens. Now I'm a senior golfer in my late sixties and playing off 11 handicap I have used AD 333 balls for the past couple of years. My game has changed as I got older and these balls are really good and fit into my game very well and are cheaper than Pro V 1 but you get what you pay for.

I have found that Only urethane cover golf balls, provide the spin around the green that I want. My golf game is more about control than distance. I'd be very interested to see spin numbers from wedge shots with a launch monitor, going forward on any golf balls you try. I really like the on course tests you do. But spin for most people who play golf. Helps with the control and consistency. Keep up the great work, James. Cheers!
I've been a little bit all over the place when it comes to balls, tried both of the ones in the video. Decided I was going to stick to a single ball for an extended period rather than just grabbing what's on offer. Went with the Bridgestone E12, sort of the ball between the Prov1 and the AD333 -multilayer construction, ionomer cover, around £25 a dozen.
I’m happy with what ever I find, as long as it a Srixon, titleist or callaway!

Spin control is everything - especially for mid handicappers like me that are chipping/pitching on lots of holes so I prefer a urethane covered ball as any additional spin helps. And as you said - feel off the putter is really important. Last few years I played Z-stars but recently noticed that the covers get damaged really easily (1 or 2 trips to the bunker and they are scuffed/chipped) whereas pro v1s are more robust.
I play ad333 balls. I like them, I have played lots of different ball before settling on the ad333.
For me, I think it offers a great blend between price and performance.
I would prefer to just see the challenge, tee to green. As you are such a good putter I feel that even if the putts are from different parts of the green your feel is so good that it would give an unfair advantage to whichever ball you putt with second. I tend to use cheaper balls and often the AD333(mainly as I do not get much spin even out of an expensive ball) and love the way you embrace these little challenges

Fantastic head to head. I’d like to see head to heads on using 3/4 hybrids compared to 3/4 irons as in consistency as I struggle with my 4 iron. Great videos.
I have used AD-333 for a while and have always found them to be good enough for me (20 handicap/occasional golfer). I have also tried Titleist PRO V1 but don't think I have the skill to make the best of them. Therefore price is more important to me as I don't see any gain form the ProV1. Great video though and interesting stuff. Would love to see these tested on the simulator for pure tech facts but also you playing them in some comps to get used to them would be brilliant and a 'real' test.
On a side note. That course looks really nice to me. Looks really relaxing being out there by yourself and playing some good golf.
Being a higher handicap golfer (24) and new to the game (1 year) I found lake balls handy for the first few months as I was losing them a lot. But now I have started breaking 100 regularly and keeping shots in play a lot more I have started using the Mizuno RB566's. I find them nice and soft even though they are 2 piece ionomer ball. They are also sold at a great price €22 per dozen.

I switched from Titleist to Srixon couple weeks ago. Used to hit prov1 now I'm hitting zstar xv.
Have used both and am not surprised the AD333 went well off the tee but pro v’s are much better for approach shots and control. Lot more confidence especially for shorter shots >80 yards
Hello James. I am currently using the Titleist Tour Soft. I also have a couple of sleeves of Kirkland golf balls but I loose about 20 to 30 yards with the Kirkland and I am not real long to begin with so I don't believe I will be buying anymore Kirkland balls. I also have used the Callaway Super Soft but I have found I get better distance with the Titleist Tour soft and better control around the green. I will buy a dozen of the AD333 and see what I think. I tried to play the Titleist Tour Soft ball at the start of the season and found myself playing all bump and runs on green side shots. There was no drop and stop. I was constantly playing for the run out. I went back to the ProV1 and was able to spin it with complete control. Two hops and stop next to the hole. Back to the ProV1 for me.

Great video James, I go to a local boy who sell good course found balls, All brands for £1 per ball, Last week i got 40 prov1 for £40 and the only thing about them is logos or pen marks, No cuts or scuff marks on them..
You touched on a good video idea there yourself, try the Titilist equivalent price wise Vs AD333. You might get a more obvious reason why the AD333 is so popular - or it could just come down to what I think is best about the ball, the colour! It's easier to track and easier to find in the rough
I use several different golf balls. I use the Taylormade TP5, TP5x, project a & tour response, also enjoy the Callaway ERC Soft & superhot. I would like you to try any of these vs the each other and I would like to see you use a cheaper ball in Comps.
After playing a urethane cover ball for a while I'd never go back to a ionomer cover. I notice a real difference around the greens. I've been playing the Seed SD-01 and I'm really liking it. If you buy via the subscription option (then cancel immediately) they are great value. I got 4 dozen delivered for £93.28. £23.32 a dozen.
I play low compression balls most probably I will be playing with the Srixon but given the opportunity I would be buying a Precept Lady/Laddie . I like them because I have a slow down swing and low compression balls takes off quicker
James, also do a comparison of the VICE golf balls. I've tried the Vice Tour and it performed very well. I usually play the Titleist Tru Soft and just switched to the Srixon Q Star Tour 3.
I went from Callaway chrome soft to AD333 as just as good for my game. My son bought me some pro v1 balls a year ago. My fade became a slice and the ball jumped off my putter. Our greens are really quick and I couldn't control the pace of the pro version for anything under 6 foot. Went back to ad333.
Used titliest as I progressed in the sport, then moved to Bridgestone, however I now use the AD333 ball, I buy 4 dozen at the beginning of every year and I still have 3 boxes remaining as of today the 30th August!
I’ve played the AD333, but more often the Q-star version on the ball (from what I read they’re the same or similar).
I get them on sale at the beginning of the season/end of season…Srixon is amazing and offer them at half price multiple times a year. $1.50 a ball for a very good ball vs. $5 per ball is important when they go flying into the forest/water multiple times a round.

I've been buying A1 condition second hand Srixon ad333 yellow.....at £4.80 a dozen.....50 balls £20.....and my game has improved amazingly since changing from Pro v1 ....no longer worried about losing the ball....hence hitting it sweet every time...Leon

James, A lovely video I use either Snell, or Kirkland ( I am NOT anywhere close to a low handicap, I usually shoot around 92-98. I do however use a technasonic "Check-G0" ball spinner (see Dave Pelzs' comments) It spins a ball and the "heavy" side" spins to the outside, (centrifugal force) where I mark it. This means the ball rolls more "truer", is that a word?? In any case it seems to work. I don't believe (unless someone can advise (Chris??? LOL ) That the manufacturers "aim line" is anything other than a printing (still useful, but hardly scientifically provable) I would like to hear your comments with the "Aimpoint" system though. I too use the Motocaddy GPS (fantastic machine) and also the Arccros system (just played 5 rounds).
When Today's Golfer did their ball test a couple of years ago the AD333 got crazy high spin for an ionomer-cover ball. Higher than a lot of urethane balls. It does have a very thin layer of urethane sprayed on, so that's probably why. That coating might not last very long, though. It didn't do anything impressive distance-wise, but was above the average, if I remember right.
My instructor plays the Srixon Z Star XV. He suggested that I try the Srixon Q Star Tour 3. I'm an 18 handicap. I played with the Q 3 and to my surprise, it performed quite well. I am interested in trying the AD333 however, on Amazon they list for 32 bucks not 20. Which is the same price of the Q Star Tour. James, I would like to see you do a comparison of the Srixon Q Star Tour against Titleist ProV1.

Agreee with your assessment that playing a premium ball provides more consistent and desirable performance. I play Titleist AVX or Callaway Chrome Soft, and take a decision on greens: AVX on softer greens and Chrome on harder greens, where I need more spin.
Trick is to not to pay full price: both Titleist and Callaway offered buy 3 dozen and get one free in the US recently, making the cost of each around $36 per dozen.
Used the AD333 for some years now, does everything I ask of it.
Allows me a level of consistency that other balls don't.
I have actually just changed from the Ad333 to titleist trufeel. Ad333 is a lovely ball and does everything you need. It was just a bit too spinny for my swing and the titleist reduced this on those bad swings/shots.
But the Titleist Trufeel and Ad333 are both £20 a dozen so the same ball park.
James - it would be interesting to see the difference between the Ad333 and the Z star and other balls in their range and similar with Titleist. Do they help or is it hype and ego that people play the 'tour' ball as some weird flex.

I just picked up 2 dozen Costco golf balls to try on my next round (I enjoyed your previous video on them James). As a high-handicapper, I lose more than my fair share of golf balls. At approximately $1 per ball for a knockoff ProV1x, that seems like a good choice. Even better than the Titleist Tru-Feel, Callaway Supersoft, and Srixon Soft Feel lines. I have tried all of those as well, and like them but they are close to twice the price of the Costco ball. If/when my game improves to the point where I am more concerned about durability and performance than losing them because I can't keep them in play long enough to wear them out, then maybe it will be worth spending more.
Or, maybe I'll like the Kirkland Signature and just not see spending 4 times the price for little to no gain. Hmmm...
I usually play the Srixon AD333 Tour/Q Star Tour and I use a Srixon AD333 as my "Winter" ball. I have broken 72 twice and both times I have done it with an AD333. Personally, I am not good enough to be able to tell the differences in spin between either of these balls. I also love the Srixon white colour and it just feels right to me. Once all my Q Star Tour balls are used up, I will just switch to the AD333. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, feels good off all clubs including the putter and it still spins on approaches to the greens. My strike and course conditions are definitely more of a factor than the ball.
i swapped to the AD333 a few months ago, it is really good, I get great check and control on short game with good feel and playability. Prov1 is not worth it unless they are free! my only comment would be durability, I'm now changing golf balls mid round if needed as they can scuff up quite quickly, but that just means I'm getting a good bag of practice balls that are all the same.
I’m a beginner. Older. Use senior flex clubs. Mostly use reloads which I buy at a military base for about $6.99 per 15. If I buy new balls I use Noodle L&S which are about $20 for 15. Not sure what it is about the Noodle balls but they feel very soft and I seem to have better rounds with them. They feel good.

Srixon do great balls! A ball for every golfer from weekend warriors to tour pro's. I cut my teeth playing the AD333. Now that my game has evolved I play the Z star as that is what's best for my scoring clubs and has the sound / feel off the putter that I prefer. I do keep a few AD333 balls in the bag as my water balls and when I use them they still don't disappoint!.
Watching this for the second time. Since watching this the first time I bought a dozen of the Srixon ad333. I enjoy them. So much that I recently went to buy more and I cannot find them. James do you know if Srixon has discontinued them. I know you just reviewed their Q Star Tour. Perhaps that and the Z Star XV is the direction they are headed. Please let me know what you have available in thee UK
I’m a Vice Pro+ convert. They perform as well as any premium tour ball and cost $135 US for 5 dozen.

I am getting Titleist Toursoft balls at £2 each. I find them a bit hard. My club pro has suggested a Srixon AD 333. I am 28 handicap so don't warrant an expensive ball. Thanks for this video.
Used both these balls, years with the srixons, and been using the prov1x and my biggest improvement has been the short game with the prov1x. Lost abit of distance off the tee but more than making it up with my short game as I can judge the run out with my chips and feel on my putts

Years ago I had someone ask me what ball I played. I told him, whatever I could find in the woods because I couldn't afford to buy balls. He told me to pick any ball, no matter the price, and only play that ball because of all the things in golf you can control, the ball you use is the only thing you can control. Good advise as I did see improved consistency in my game.
Switched back to Vice Drive from AD333... The Vice Drive has - at least for me - the higher ball flight and I like this more (and is way cheaper :) ).
I’m currently using tp5 think they are 2019 model, I got 4 boxes at $45 Australian dollars a box, or I’m also trying callaway chrome soft xls which cost me $65 Australian dollars,
I will admit courses I play I don’t lose many balls as no water and have to hit it way off line to lose, so ball normally last 3/4 rounds unless I hit some rocks or something,
I normally pick ball that I like to putt and chip with, I don’t think ball makes much difference off the tee or longish irons, but my personal opinion there,
I don’t spend a lot of money on golf but one thing I like is a good ball, but that’s me
I pay $25 for two dozen Kirklands, though this month I did buy a box of the Srixon 333's after seeing another review (for $20), and a box of Srixon Q Star Tour Divides (which I got for $20 with a coupon) as well. My game is too random to make it sensible to pay much more for balls (though I have tried and hated less expensive ones -- the $6/doz Nitros at Walmart, which are awful, just clicky and no bite on the green).
As for doing ball comparisons and reviews, I'd love to see them in the studio, but for your gaming ball, use what you're comfortable with. You can get us a pretty good review of a ball with a three-hole playthrough, like you did here.
I use Bridgestone e6 balls. Prov1 is for better players. I use it and just enhances my bad shots. More spin=more slice at least for me.
James, can you test a low compression.ball like the super soft vs a harder ball like pro v. See what difference that has. I don't think enough is talked about ball compression.
Since returning to golf after injury I've been using AD333 and buying them from my local pro shop 2 dozen for £30. I'm very happy with them for everyday golf. I recently got a sleeve of Z Stars and I can definitely feel the difference but as much as I enjoy playing with them I would find it hard to justify £33 per dozen. I was 12 handicap before injury but that combined with new handicap system has propelled me to 17 :-(
I currently play the Srixon distance ball playing off an 18 handicap. I've just paid £13 for a dozen, last box was £16 a dozen so for me, real value for money and give me the distance and feel I want at a very affordable price. Excellent comparison and I would say yes, for the better players, a premium ball would be beneficial but for me, playing off 18 I don't think I would notice that much difference other than price and maybe spending longer to look for it 😂👍🏌️
I play the pro V, however part of the reason is that a lot of the balls i find in the rough are also pro V, so I retain my consistent ball choice, without having to buy new balls very often. I do also have sitting and waiting 12 TP5 to test over a few rounds too. I also bought 12 VICE balls…..but you almost never find those balls in the rough, so in reality my Pro V actually works out to be pretty cheap.

Currently working through a selection of Srixons, Titleist and Taylormade’s, 50p a ball from Tommy who searches from them on our local course!

I used to use srixon ad333 now I use Kirkland signature as I find I get more check around greens might go back to ad333 in winter as srixon seems to go better against the wind
Would like to hear your thoughts as per 2 dozen their same price I play off 9.7 and 54 years old with average swing speed driver goes carry 250 and 8 iron 130 so not fast swing speed

I play an AD333, very often on offer at 2 dozen for £35 or so... I don't play enough to warrant trying too many balls. I used to use the DT solo Titleist, bit longer than the 333, 333 spun a bit more. Since changing the Solo to Trusoft, Trufeel etc I think the Titleist budget ball has had an identity crisis and I didn't like the changes, whereas the 333 just gently evolves, which is why I buy it, if I only buy 24 or 36 balls a year in one go, I don't want to be stuck using something I don't know, like or trust!
just experimenting with the TM Tour Soft over the AD333. Seem to be seeing better numbers with the Tour Soft but not convinced in the price uplift yet....
I am playing with lake balls, Wilson Staff DX3 Spin. The price for 100 of those was 80£ so that is 9,6£ per dozen (there was free delivery as I spend more than 50£)
Other then some of them have logos on them, then they are in really good condition, no scratches or anything of that sort.
I use either a cut blue or a cut Gray the cut raise a three-piece sure thing covered the cut blue is a four piece here thing covered very similar to a pro V1 if not identical maybe slightly better in some way slightly worse than others but they're only $20 a dozen
Is the AD 333 more of a thing in the UK? The cheep ball I seem to find the most of is the callaway supersofts. But the ball I find the most of on our course is definitely the pro-v1.
Find your ball and stick with it. The one you like the feel and have control over you must have confidence in your ball. Like you said in the video golf is in your head and you will play better with confidence.
I have lots of older Titleist wound balls, pt tour wound etc. I think possibly from the early 00s perhaps late 90s. Being a high handicapper I am not sure but these older balls "feel" as good as a new premium ball. Have you had much experience hitting older balls James? If so what are your thoughts? Should I save these balls as "premium" til my handicap improves? thanks.
Hi I've used the srixon ad333 tour for over 5years and found them to be a quality ball at reasonable prices normally pay between £20 to £25 unfortunately these balls are no longer available they have been replaced by the Q star this I think was to bring in line with the American market, would be interested to see how these balls compare.
