I learned that, although PO48 has been discontinued, Daniel Smith has enough pigment stockpiled to continue manufacturing the paint for around a decade. This is from a Daniel smith blog post called "the importance of continuity of color"
thanks for this video! I only found it now (02/2024) and coincidentally last week I bought a Rembrandt Burnt Orange (PO48) 20ml tube. I had the Daniel Smith one already, which I find more reddish. I stay away from mixes, as it can get muddy fast if/when I mix. I tend to follow pigment numbers rather than names, as manufacturers get a bit creative sometimes and it is hard to have a clear idea of what colour contains which pigment. So sad to see colours disappear...but maybe it is a door to explore other colours as well. I really enjoyed your mixes at the end. This colour might not be as easy to use on its own, but mixing it with blues, greens, reds and yellow it is a real gem. Grazie, Elisabetta!
DS Quin Burnt Orange was one of my first loves when I started watercolor 2 yrs ago. I am so glad that I subscribe to your channel so that I got this warning to stock up!
I just loved Da Vinci’s Q. Burnt orange but it was too late to get the original and found Daniel Smith’s new Q. Burnt orange was more brown than the beautiful original one. Heard our watercolors are affected by the color cars ppl like and maybe didn’t sell many orange ones 😢.
Oh wow. Now I'm going to have to check to see what I have in PO48. I'd hate to see it go! I love the Rembrandt in the video, and of course the Sennelier. I know I have the DS and the QOR in my stash. I guess this pigment game is a lesson in non-attachment and flexibility, and being open to new possibilities. Ha! Hard to see such a beautiful single pigment go! The emerald mix is almost a raw sienna with a green umber tinge. Very nice.
I love your philosophical deduction! I think 2 or 3 tubes should last for a few generations :) .... I really love the Rembrandt as well and I think I will buy it again....Have a nice day!
Thanks for these swatches. I enjoy seeing the comparisons. Have you made a video about your studio palette already? I am not sure if I have seen it. If you haven't it would be interesting to see what palette it is and what colours you have in it.
Hello Alexa! No I haven’t…I only have made a video about my travel palette… my main studio palette hasn’t been renovated since a while so the truth is that there are colours which I never touch and new colours that I really am impatient to introduce….but it’s a great idea actually and it could be a good moment to freshen it up!! 😊 thanks a lot for your very kind message. Have a lovely week, Elisabetta
Thanks for doing this. Hard for me to compare due to the difference in product you used on the swatches. Some you used an intense deposit of pigments by squeezing out on the swatch area, others using your brush to dab a bit of color.
I have Aussie Red Gold and Chinese Orange (my favorite). Sennelier was my first watercolor love. I adore their Helios Purple and Yellow Sophie. I bought Yellow Sophie because I had to see what it looked like. It's really beautiful.
Hi Lori! I agree that Sennelier has such a poetic range….I don’t know these colours you are mentioning! I must look into them! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 😀Elisabetta
I’m glad you included the DS Aussie Red Gold and Sennelier’s Chinese Orange; they’re very reminiscent of a very orange PO49. From what I understand, Aussie Red Gold was first introduced by Spectrum Art in Australia but then Daniel Smith introduced it. I can’t remember where I read this or whether it is true. A Gallo has an almost identical colour.
Hello awatercolourist! I have Sennelier’s Chinese orange. It came in a good value set of Sennelier watercolors. I didn’t know it was reminiscent of PO49, good to know. I have the DS quin gold hue made with PO48 and PY150. I’m not keen in it because it has such a strong yellow undertone. Do you recall which A Gallo color is similar to PO48? Thanks!
Dear friend!, you have obviously aroused my curiosity about A.Gallo!! Is it Castile Orange? It looks so attractive! Thanks for appreciating my decision to swatch similar colours! Have a great week!
Hello Elisabetta, thank you again for an interesting video. I have the Qor version and I like it a lot. They make a Quin Gold from this and PY150 which looks a lot like the Chinese Orange. On an other subject, could it have something to do with the paper, that the Qor colors in your videos don’t flow? You mentioned it a couple of times. In my experience they flow a lot, sometimes even too much. But much more so on cotton paper, which for swatching would be understandably a bit of a waste. Thank you again.
Hello Martina! I was really surprised as well by the low dispersion if QOR, because my experience with this brand is quite the opposite! Great dispersion! Thank you very much for your comment, it’s always a pleasure! Have a lovely week, Elisabetta
I think, too, that one needs to start with a lot less paint with the QoR to see the great flow. They are very concentrated and high pigment so if you start with a lot of paint, they just can't move. They need to be diluted more. They feel and work a little differently than other watercolors. I really like them but it takes a tad getting used to.
Good morning Elisabetta 🌄 Great video as always. I didn't know Rembrandt has a single pigment version as well, i really need to get a tube. They're really affordable here in Germany. I searched every brand for a single pigment version, this must have slipped through. So thanks a lot 💜
Hello Arsinoe, good morning to you! Rembrandt is a great brand, great quality at affordable price!! Let me know if you find it 😊. Have a lovely week and thanks for your message!
@@WatercolorElisabetta There will be no problem finding it, i have a shop which sells Rembrandt and Van Gogh paints. Wish you a wonderful week as well 💜
Beautiful color mixes, especially the one with Cobalt Blue! I wonder, how does Transparent Red Oxide stack up against Quin Burnt Orange? Is it comparable?
Thank to you!! If you buy it, will you let us know if it’s more on the brownish or orangey side? From the name I reckon more brownish, but I’m curious!! Thank you for your info! (Although I always wish I didn’t know 😂). Have a great week, Elisabetta
@@WatercolorElisabetta you’re welcome! If I purchase it I will definitely let you know what it leans towards (brown or orange). You’re right, from the online swatch it leans more towards brown. It is dangerous to know too much because curiosity gets the better of me, and I make a purchase, YIKES! 🤣
Daniel Smith has said they have a 20 year supply of PO48. Still, I expect prices will start climbing in a few years (especially as other manufacturers had no huge back stock of it so more artists will be buying the Daniel Smith version). I've been stocking up not just on PO48, but some of the mixes that DS uses it in (quin gold, undersea green). I too, use a lot of QBO! Nice comparison video, thank you.
My favourite homemade mix for burnt orange is with PBr 25 (a deep reddish brown, the one I use is Royal Brown from Rosa Gallery) and PY 150 (Nickel Azo Yellow). I don't know how it compares to quin burnt orange, but in any case I can make gorgeous shades with this mix.
oh I hope they aren’t discontinuing PO48! I am going to stock up on the Rembrandt version. It’s the one I have and I like it best from your comparison as well. The DS looks just as good in fairness, but it is probably twice as expensive
I agree 100%! Rembrandt is just as good at half the price here in Europe…I am not sure about discontinuing PO48, but I have stocked just in case….. thanks a lot for taking the time to comment! 😊Elisabetta
I heard it's being discontinued, but I have 4 tubes so I'm ok. I stocked the PO49 too, as its one of my favorites. Seems like the auto industry is moving away from the orange ranges.
OOOOOOH! PO65, another pigment I want to try. I believe it is in the same family as PY129 and PY150. PO65 was discontinued some time ago. I think the PBr25+PR177 is a hue, but I am not sure; I can’t imagine PBr25 and PR177 giving something so vibrant as PO65.
Dear friend, yes it’s likely to be a hue, but my tube doesn’t say which one I have….the website should be more updated compared to my leaflet and it says PO65…I have internally decided I have PO65!!! Best, Elisabetta 😊
