Eliot, thank you for talking about your mistakes and leaving them in unedited. As a hobbyist I often make errors when putting this stuff back together, it is refreshing to see a repair video be so honest.
yeah man thats just how it goes. nobody is perfect and admitting it makes you seem more regular, as if you were watching your friend show you something. I always make a small mistake when modifying systems. the only one that I ever did absolutely perfect was a gameboy color and it took hours checking every little thing to make sure it was immaculate and perfectly centered with everything.
Don't mind the poking screws. Treat them as japanese Kintsugi : "breakage and repair are part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise." It's part of the history of this one of a kind Switch and what you learned while repairing it.
The blue screen is very easy to fix. Hot air station at 450 medium air speed. Flux the nvidia chip and heat it up once it's hot gently push the chip down while the soder sets. For me this fixes the problem roughly 80% of the time
I agree somewhat, but it's not always the SoC, the blue screen is a communication issue between the SoC and RAM so it can be either of those things. The problem is a lot of the time you end up with torn traces under the SoC too which means trace repair and reballing
@@TheCod3r I have never heard of or seen torn pads, unless someone failed a repair attempt. That chip is not going to move enough from a drop to break a trace, and a overwhelming majority of the time blue screen occurs from the shock of a blow. However I have ran across chips that have just went bad and need to be replaced.
That color combo looks amazing! I'm just happy Nintendo made the Switch region free. I used to reflash the NAND on Japanese 3DS's to change the language and it was a huge pain
I've recently done the exact same thing with broken yellow and black switch lites. Ended up merging the 2 together and creating an awesome unique one instead.
"Argh, bastard..." Truly one of the most powerfully thorough exclamations of disappointment I've heard in a long while. Anyways. Congrats on a tricky job (that screen bezel swap seriously looks great)!
Sad to see such a special edition switch in such bad condition I hope it can be fixed! Also nice to see the switch lite being fixed being a more modern console. I definitely plan on getting an I fix it toolkit cause I have so many Nintendo consoles that can use some slight fixes would the mako kit work well? The pro kit is a little too pricey for me.
@@clairehoffner2851 good to know! I was looking into that kit as well but I’m not sure if it included the specific bit I would need for Nintendo consoles but I’ll have to double check thanks!
LMAO I'm actually glad someone as experienced as you had leftover screws. I had the same thing happen fixing a regular sized New 3DS. Could have sworn I put everything back in, yet had two tiny brass screws left. Everything works though so no way am I opening that nightmare up again.
Great video! The screen looks cool. I did the same with my switch but by over tightening the screws then ended up replacing the shell. The quality of the aftermarket ones are decent.
Watching this makes me feel a lot better about making the same mistake with a 3ds I was putting back together. I love the purple and white combo, looks great!
Replacing the screen isn't as hard as I once thought, but keeping in mind where all those little screws go is tedious by itself. I replaced my friend's LCD screen on his Switch Lite and it came out perfect afterwards. It's nice that this stuff is at least understandable when it's done once or twice. And thanks for this video, I've watched others that aren't as informative
That's not a bad Idea, but the tricky part is trying to remember wich screw goes in the right hole. Outer and fan screws are easy enough but the tiny and medium screws looked the same.
I recently bought that Pokémon zacain and zamazenta switch lite for only $150 USD from the Facebook Marketplace. It was in almost new condition, with only a couple of scratches on the screen. Great video! That switch has a nice unique look with that screen cover.
Just been re-watching the backlog of walkman restoration/repairs you've done, you still fill most of the search when looking for new content which is pretty cool.
I just picked up an abused Pokemon limited edition from Japan to fix for myself. Missing both thumb sticks and the shoulder buttons don't spring back when pressed, I'm certain with the shoulder buttons that its as simple as replacing the springs because I can't see any other reason. Thanks for the video and showing your mistakes always make me feel better knowing that even people who do this more often than I have the same issues. Appreciate all the videos, keep it up Elliot
Nice job! I don’t know if it’s me or what, but I will never understand how people will not take care of their video game consoles. You paid money for it(or someone did) wouldn’t you want it to last?
Good stuff Elliot. The blue screen issue on the other one is caused by a communication issue between the SoC and RAM. You can sometimes fix it with a reflow but determining what chip is the cause can be tricky. Usually I try the pressure test to figure out whether it's the SoC or the RAM. It may also have torn traces which is obviously more tricky to deal with
Have you noticed any increase on fan noise? I noticed you didn't place new thermal paste, so you can have potential air pockets if the application went bananas. Anyhow, thanks for all the awesome content and i hope you can get everything sorted out!
I miss the more humorous, musical tone of the old videos. I feel like I'm watching an episode of This Old House, but the house is a Nintendo Switch Lite. Don't get me wrong, I still love your content. It's just lower energy than I am used to. Also the screen lens is a good choice. I feel it gives the system more character.
The indigo and gray mix looks awesome. And I would never notice the screw bumps if you didn't point them out, but even after noticing them, they really don't look bad at all! Don't even worry about it. It's great
At someone that has taken apart electrics since I was a kid, the putting things back together part is usually the most important part. Just got the iFixit replacement joystick for my wife's Switch Lite today. Quite the serendipitous video. Thanks for such a detailed teardown. Wish me luck.
Operation Switch Fix was a success and I only had 1 extra screw left out when I was done. I'll say that's good enough. Thanks again for the video. It was a real help.
One thing I've learned to appreciate since I got an ifixit set is just having a handful of those blue plastic shims/plectra is worth its weight in gold, just having one or two as kind of like an extra pair of fingers to keep a gap between parts from closing is invaluable. And to join the other comments, I think the grey bezel makes for a pretty nice looking contrast. I know "bezel-less" or bezel-hiding designs are more common nowadays, but I still fondly remember the look of the old gameboys, y'know, it had a certain kind of charme and makes the screen really "pop", visually speaking, from the main body of the console.
I love the way the finished Switch looks. Imagine replacing some of the buttons with colourful ones and that way it'll look like a classic game Cube controller
You're spot on with your diagnosis with the blue screen. You can test which chip is broken by pressing on it when you power up. It's either the APU, or one of the 2 RAM chips. If it's a RAM chip you could probably get away with a reflow. If it's the APU it mostly likely took a pad / trace with it when the console was dropped. Still repairable but it's not economical.
12:50 I've experienced the pain of this with a Thinkpad laptop I revived recently, TWICE. It's the electronics repair curse to have extra screws and the plstic blemishes!
@@hawkfeather6802 as someone who had to order a replacement part from ifixit, switch lite sticks do indeed drift, i was extremely gentle with the console(maybe 1 drop onto the floor?) and took good care of it, yet experienced stick drift about a year in replacing the joysticks on a switch lite is a pain in the ass you have to disassemble like the entire thing to get to em edit: it was the right joystick, the one that is underneath the main board, the left one is easy the right is one of the last steps before you have taken everything out
Lol I just used my mom's hair dryer to take the screen out. It seems heating it up also made it a bit more workable, because I did use quite a bit of force to pop it off the shell to the point where it was curving, but no permanent bends were done AND it worked perfectly fine when I put everything back together. I wonder, if one would replace the two screws with the appropriate ones, could the plastic be, pressed down from the front. A bit of heat, perhaps, or even wet sanding, "brasso", a mild abrasive stuff...
I've been hesitating about buying a switch lite since I figured that since the thumbsticks are part of the console and are not joy-cons fixing them if they drift would be a big hassle. Quite the bummer regarding the screws poking through the casing, but oh well... at least you swapped parts around and you got it working! I could never do that! haha.
I've taken apart the Switch Lite a lot and the tiny screws are easy to strip and the ribbon cables for the digitizer and LCD can be super annoying to put back in. I broke an LCD once trying to swap the screen but keep the same color digitizer. I was being careful just lifting a little from the sides but the back layer still separated from the front layer that was stuck to adhesive.
Get yourself a soldering amt with loads of places to store screws. Mine has one that counts to 100. its there to help you with putting the screw back into the right order.
The other one could get the Aluminum shell treatment, maybe. Remember to check that thermal compound and replace it if needed. Could add thermal pads if you go the aluminum shell route, get maximum heatsink use out of the everything.
The internals on this thing are nerve wracking to deal with. I did a shell/button replacement thinking it would be a simple drop-in procedure lol. I had no written instructions and a Chinese video walkthrough with no audio, but somehow I pulled it off, despite being certain I'd punctured a ribbon (somehow I put a dent in it with the corner of a flat driver that I was stupidly using to pry up the retaining latch) The end result was lovely though.
