My mother is in this film :) She was an au pair in Grindewald in 1968 at the age of 20 and the film crew of this film needed the whole town as extras and so she's in the film :)
I know...its thanks to my mother I became a Bond fan. When I was younger I watched the film on tv and and my mother came in to the room and said: "oh that's the film I'm in!". So I said "you're in a movie?" Then I found out there were more of these films....and the rest is history.
The crazy thing is, Lazenby was 30 when the film came out in 1969. The oldest Bond, Roger Moore, was 58 in his last film. Just think, in theory Lazenby could have stayed on as Bond for 28 years. He would have been Bond all the way through Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997
The three month gap - is filled by the ‘love montage’ with Tracy - it also takes time for Bond to ‘brush up’ on Genealogy and get the appointment with Blofield
Just came here to write exactly that comment after having watched the review. Also, it was not the first movie featuring a purely instrumental „title song“. It was from Russia with Love - however, there is also a version by Matt Munro played at the end.
@@mp1314 my thoughts was "Dr. No", yet the James Bond Theme was a medley leading up to Calypso-beat "Three Blind Mice" when the title sequence goes to the actual film with the hitmen going to the cricket club to assassinate Jamaica's MI6 station chief (Strangways) and his secretary.
Before I saw the movie I was negatively influenced by all the things said about the movie and Lazenby. But when I saw it, it became not just my favorite James Bond movie but also one of my all time favorite movies. And for a large part because of Lazenby. I think the movie would not have worked with Connery or Moore. Such a shame he didn't make Diamonds are Forever. I think it would have been a great revenge movie.
I agree! This is my favorite Bond movie and also one of my favorite movies of all time! I love Lazenby. I wish he wouldn't have been so stubborn and at least did one or two more films. They wanted him to be the Bond of the 70's. Could you imagine Lazenby going all the way up to Moonraker? It would have been amazing. I think he fit the Bond mold well both with his looks and his physical presence. I like Roger Moore as well, but Lazenby was great in the fighting and action scenes. Moore was never convincing, even in his young days. Lazenby's acting was a little raw and unpolished in OHMSS but by the time he would have done TMWTGG he could have been completely in his realm. He had the confidence and demeanor to succeed at anything he set his mind to.
Fun fact: On the first take where James is emotional over Tracy's death, George Lazenby actually had a tear streaming down his cheek, because he was thinking of the end of the novel, which made him cry. In another take, George Lazenby cried less than the first take. Eventually, Peter Hunt (the director of this movie), said, "Let's just do one take without the tears. James Bond doesn't cry." And thus, we get the take that made into the final film where Bond doesn't cry at all, but is still emotional.
Nirmal Kumar The bobdsledding scene is a high light to and ski chases. Having Bond chased by Blofelds men is suspenseful and shows a human side to Bond as looks worried and alone until Tracy finds him. Tracy is one of the best Bond girls in the series
Scott Knode really? I always thought that the bob sledding scene was relatively weak and felt awfully long, let alone the awfully timed hand grenade explosions. FYEO however showed how a bob sledding action scene is supposed to be done, imo.
"On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is one of the finest in the Bond series. Producers Saltzmann and Broccoli wisely decided that with the swinging Sixties coming to an end they needed a new kind of Bond, not just another actor to replace Connery. The new Bond would be a lover, not a swinger (Well, for the most part.) The violence would be realistic, not cartoonish or played for laughs. Governments could not be trusted, so Bond must turn to an outside agency, the Corsican Mafia, to deal with Blofeld. (Yes, this is his "Godfather" moment.) Most important of all, the movie would end tragically; with a world at war from Viet Nam to Africa to the streets of America the audience would not accept a happy ending. Of course Connery would have done a better acting job that Lazenby (who couldn't?) but his suave, poised "I own the room" manner would have been out of place here. BTW, I think "This never happened to the other fella" is one of the great gags in the series. It lets us know that we are about to see a new character, not just a new face.
Never ever been able to picture Sean owning the barn scene without seeming flippant, nor selling the final scene. Conclude, that for whatever other faults, we had the right Bond for the right film.
"This never happened to the other fella" shows that Connery is still Bond for everyone. Lazenby didn't say ''This never happened to the other movies''.
*Trivia Fact:* This film was actually initially supposed to end with Bond and Tracy driving off from their wedding, they drive off, sees "Just Married" card on back window, cut to credits. And Tracy's murder was to be saved as the pre-credits scene for _Diamonds Are Forever,_ making it a more revenge-themed sequel (a la _Quantum of Solace_ ) with Irma Bunt and Marc-Ange Draco returning, and focus more on Bond mourning his deceased wife Tracy. Even Richard Maibaum had wrote initial treatments for _DAF_ in this way. However, Lazenby had decided to quit the role (prior to _OHMSS_ 's release), and thus they decided to include the Tracy's murder scene into this film's ending, and retrofit _DAF_ to include Sean Connery back in the role.
There was this idea in the script, but even so which they decided to include Tracy's murder scene into O.H.M.S.S. ending. If Lazenby continued or Connery played at O.H.M.S.S. it would be a revenge film.
Love this film. Absolutely love it. And I quite like Lazenby as well. He brings a vulnerability to the part that makes Bond more relateable. Personally I don't think the Connery Bond would have worked in this story, especially the ending. Connery the actor could have done a scene like that (when playing a different character) but his Bond just wasn't vulnerable or emotional enough to make the ending work. It would have been too strange to see his Bond so emotionally shattered.
About the dramatic ending with Connery, I think it would be much closer to the book. Ιn book the car doesn't stop, and after the gun shot comes out of the road, and Bond lost his senses for a while and is slightly ingured, when he talks to the policeman on the motorcycle. Also, if you want, how I imagined Connery in O.H.M.S.S. ua-cam.com/video/wivsl8JqLKc/v-deo.html
D. J. If he would have stayed with his 7 picture deal he was offered he could have established himself as an actor and probably even as one of the best Bond actors but then again had he stayed for 7 movies we probably wouldn’t have had Roger Moore as Bond. If did 6 more movies after On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and released every 2 to 3 years most likely would have kept playing Bond into the 1980s and Moore would have been too old.
Words cannot express how much I love this movie. It is not only my favorite Bond movie. It's also one my all time favorite movies. Also, it's always a pleasure to hear your reviews.
This is seriously one of the best Bond films. Diana Rigg is perfection in her role. The cinematography is amazing. It's the strongest and most believable love story. PS - I love the "This didn't happen to the other fellow" line 😉
Only the outdoor scenes, in the indoor scenes the lighting is way too bleak, harsh, abruptly changes, and kinda sloppy. His cinematography was not as good in You only live twice because in that film it was shot by Freddie Young who did Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, and Ryan's Daughter. Freddie Young's cinematography in You only did twice was much more control and consistent.
@@chitown1782 Bleak? You mean underlit? Never saw that once. At worst, there were shots that were made because they were the easiest to set-up but the camera placement in many of the indoor scenes beyond the stagey stuff of the past Bond films. I think Freddie Young's location cinematography in YOLT was fantastic but a lot of the indoor stuff was weak.
George Lazenby’s terror when the goons chased him into the village seemed genuine to me. For someone who never acted before, I think Lazenby did quite well.
Only thing is Lazenby kind of ruined this line - he doesn't say "He had a lot of guts!" he says, "He had lots of guts!" which just makes it sound a bit weird.
I'm one of those who loves this movie. It's one of my favourite Bond films. Sure, Lazenby was inexperienced as an actor but I also wish he would have done some more and grown into the role. Telly Savalas is my favourite Blofeld. He had much more of a threatening presence than the Blofelds in "You Only Live Twice" and "Diamonds Are Forever". I also really like the opening theme music. So cool. I agree that the two best Bond films from the 60s are this and "From Russia With Love", which are also my two favourite Bond novels. Oh and just to finish off: I actually like the breaking of the 4th wall in the teaser. ;)
"On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is probably my favorite Bond film of all time, in the ranking of the 7th place. Don't blame for George Lazenby's hard work as James Bond, but he did a good job. He's probably not that perfect, and he's more of a wooden spy character like parody "Austin Powers." For his credit, he manages his role to be professional, and he's quite impressive for just only one role. The plot is not what we expected to see, but to be fair, it's quite good to see Bond wants to face Blofeld and he literally falls in love with the woman. Diana Rigg did a fantastic job as Tracy di Vicenzo, and she's quite beautiful. I found these two characters fell in love and I was totally invested. Telly Savalas was far more interested than Donald Pleasance, and he did a good job for being a tough Blofeld bad guy in SPECTRE and enough gentlemen he is. The action scenes were incredible. I love the opening scene where Bond faces thugs in the beach, Bond goes skiing through the mountains, and the ending climax where Bond and his men going to attack Piz Gloria was excellent. The cinematography was gorgeous, and John Barry's theme was epic since they overused this song from pay homage of Disney/Pixar's "The Incredibles." It's quite very inspirational Pixar. You can hear the background everywhere, and you have fantastic spy flick. The love scene was beautiful, and this was the first Bond film that our main character said that he loves her so much and he wants to marry her. Until they got married and his wife got killed from Blofeld with a mini gunshot. That scene alone was sorrowful, and Lazenby does deliver a good emotional line that it makes want to cry before the next film that...well just kill Blofeld, and instead they bring Connery for just only one film. But to say it's an excellent Bond film and this was last Bond film after the 60's were gone, but that's until next time, but good review sir. Overall, a fantastic film for only one Bond character in a one Bond film. Lazenby, you're kind of funny, and you have done such a good job if you have anything to say for a good movie.
Good to see you've been going through all my episodes in order so far! Also like that you share your own opinion each time, feel free to do that on every episode ;) - (I hope you enjoy my take too! Especially on this controversial episode!)
Some UA-cam reviewers simply did not like this movie. Another UA-camr cried during a discussion of this film. It really touched his heart. Men can be just as sensitive as women.
Bond takes photographs of Blofeld's brainwashed patients on the world map in Blofeld's office (just before Blofelds appears and shoots at him), so we can assume that the camera film was developed and used to track down these women. It's a bigger issue of Blofeld being left hanging from the tree by Bond for no good reason. The use of the Bond theme over the end credits is (I think) meant to imply that Bond will return to MI6 and seek revenge: that the series will continue in more familiar style. I think using 'We Have All The Time In The World' would have seemed too final (as if this was the end of the series, or at least the series as we knew it). Having got used to Lazenby over the decades, I like his scenes with M. Their dynamic is different to Connery/Lee. Lazenby's Bond looks genuinely hurt and angry by M's refusal to allow 'Operation Grandslam' to continue (Connery would have been more coolly detached and less optimistic about M's orders) and watch how Lazenby first enters M's office and waits before his desk: the body language says a lot. I think Lazenby would work better in a more serious Bond film than something like 'Diamonds Are Forever'.
+Numinous20111 Intresting points you bring up! Thanks for sharing your feedback on my review, I think the whole point of Bond developing camera film that would track down the women has always gone beyond me. Also it was operation Bedlam instead of Grandlsam (But I'm sure you knew that too, not trying to be a jerky know it all by the way!) Once again, thanks for sharing and that's a very fair assessment. This is ultimately what I want to achieve with my videos: get my opinion out in the world, make it be heared by fellow Bond fans and hear their own opinions and get some positive discussions, laughs and feedback going! :) -
***** Thanks for your reply. Yes, 'Grandslam' was Goldfinger's Fort Know plan (unless I'm wrong again). I completely forgot to congratulate you on your excellent review series and I'll be watching them as you post them.
Yes, I think that one got pointed out before. It's a stupid muck-up on my part. I can use the old excuse that English isn't my mother language and all (which it isn't) But it really comes down to sheer stupidity on that line. Sorry about that! Hope you enjoy the rest of the review though!
Oh I'm sorry to be nitpicky, but stuff like that bothers me. I love your videos! I love the James Bond reviews! I'm being careful which ones to watch because I haven't seen all the Roger Moore movies in years! Can't wait until you get to Dalton, Brosnan and Craig!
@@DutchBondFan, no need to apologize for the mistake using the word "predecessor." There are plenty of UA-camrs who speak English as their native language and they screw it up with embarrassing regularity. Your review of OHMSS is much appreciated because I've never known what to make of this Bond installment. And I agree, Bond constantly shagging chicks throughout -- while the storyline wants us to buy that he loves Tracy -- is nothing short of terrible story progression. If I were working this script, I would've held off Tracy Total Romance until she catches up with him at the Christmas festival scene. And I just cannot buy that Bond knows so much about butterflies. That scene might've been better played if Bond clearly did not know. I'm undecided about the "This never happened to the other fellow" line. Its cute and cocky that the producers and director went for it. After all, this was an era when all arts were open to being experimental. Given that Lazenby's performance improves as the film moves forward ... maybe they should've considered re-shooting that one moment with that one line (or all his lines in that scene) as the final shooting schedule, when Lazenby could deliver his lines and expressions better. *****BTW ... have any Bond films been shot in the Netherlands? If no, maybe its about time. Thanks for the review!
In the summer of 2015 binge watched all the bond films and once I watched On her majesty's secret service was like this movie is underrated! 🙂 I wish lazenby came back for diamonds are forever
I think what was worth mentioning is Peter Hunt‘s signature on this film, which you referred to early in the review. One distinct characteristic is the ultra-fast cutting and the (weird) sound effects in the hand combat scenes. Particularly obvious in the fight scene just before Bond crashes into Drako‘s office. Maybe not too significant, but regarding the look and feel of the entire franchise, this stands out imo.
my favourite Bond film.. thanks for this review.. well as we can see clearly in the comment section again..this film is the cause for endless discussions wheater its good, lazenby is good or not, is savalas a bad or a worthy blofeld.. and for me personally i love everthing about this film. 2015 i went on a trip to Piz Gloria and it was awesome. So some people hate it, others like me love it... and to round up my comment finally... this is the beauty of Bond.. for everybody there is something and everybody got a very personal opinion - you gotta love it!! best regards fellow bond fans..and DutchBondFan.. keep up the great work.. i am looking forward to watch your TMWTGG Review at some point this weekend
+John Blaze -Universal Exports- Good to hear from you John! I have to admit this is the one Bond film in the franchise that i'm almost ambarrased about for not liking to much, I can see why it's the number 1 Bond film to so many people! Thanks for your comment!
***** Uh no one should be embarrased you know like i said..thats the beauty of bond. So to me its very intersting to see how different the opinions are and thats a big part of the fact Bond will never get boring..
I completely agree, I have always been calling that the 'beauty of Bond' myself for years! I'm just saying this is one of the most praised and loved Bond films in the series, not liking this as a diehard Bond fan is a pretty controversial thing! Still though, I expressed exactly why that is in the video and it's good to see that is respected by those who love this film :)
***** it sure is.. at least it is by me..but i think most die hard bond fans rather appreciate the opinion of other fans, than putting their own at the top
OHMSS has the best score of the franchise. Its lean and mean theme is as good as it gets plus two more hits, "We Have All the Time in the World" sung by Armstrong which has taken on a life of its own, and the Christmas Tree song which deserves more credit. Visually the movie is magnificent, especially as a period piece of colorful late '60s fashion. Why does the plot have to be so silly? We can have high art without the silliness.
Right before Bond gives chase to Blofeld in the climax, he takes pictures of the map that shows the location of the "Angels of Death." After Blofeld's defeat and the destruction of his base, the virus was probably taken care of off-screen thanks to the intel that Bond provided. That's how I view it, anyway.
The movie is so good, not even George's wooden acting hurts it. Might be the best Bond movie of all time. I also feel that Sean Connery wouldn't have been able to show Bond's vulnerability and helplessness, he was too brutal and, uh, alpha. Btw I don't think Lazenby's walk lacked suavness. He just walked differently due to his physicality cause he was much taller than Connery. Just like bulky Daniel Craig walks like a block of concrete Diana Rigg is undoubtedly the best actress to play a Bond girl and Telly Savalas' take on Blofeld is just flawless. He's a menacing megalomaniac who can get physical if he needs to. I really wanted to see Ben Kingsley as Blofeld instead of terrible Chris Waltz, who's a really good actor but his Blofeld is ughhh
In O.H.M.S.S. Bond is not a relatively young, vulnerable and infinite, but a mature man with experience, like the actors in the other roles. With Connery the film would have other romance, Bond and Tracy would be like him and Bardott in ''Shalako''. Lazenby (1.87) is not taller from Connery (1.88). A better choise for Blofeld is Yul Brynner.
I went to the cinema to see this when it was released and my memory of the ending is almost the same as the one you have created. It was a long time ago, obviously, but I remember being shocked and upset by Tracy's sudden death. The way I remember it, Bond leaves Tracy where she is in the passenger seat and then, from a fixed aerial vantage point, we see his DBS resume driving down the coast road as the Louis Armstrong song fades in with the credits. I thought that was unusual for a Bond movie to end that way. A downbeat ending, and quite moving, especially after the way in which the Connery Bond films had ended. Thank you for making all of these recap films, they're very enjoyable to watch.
You said you didn't like Bond sleeping with women on Piz Gloria. I think filmmakers wanted to point out it was meaningless and only for the mission by having Bond approach the girls with the exact same lines. You also didn't mention music, which is in my opinion the best in the series. Other than that, great job.
+Aleksandar Rusmir Yes but since it not only seems meaningless to Bond, but also to the mission. Sure, by doing it he discovers the whole hypno sceam, but that was just by coincidence. There didn't seem to be a reason for Bond to just bang all the chicks. (which normally I'm all up for, but it does downplay his whole relationship with Tracy a lot) For the record: I agree on the music! - And thanks for the feedback :)
Thanks for your review, reminding me of how I first experienced this movie. Despite the silly parts of ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE--I remember thinking they were silly when I first saw the movie--it takes off when Bond escapes on skis and is rescued by Tracy. At this point he seems like a real human being and their love story becomes credible too. The good parts are so good that I can see why this has been called one of the best of the series. It's certainly one of a kind!
Also, I heard that apparently they were actually going to save Tracy's murder for the start of Diamonds Are Forever but that was changed once Lazenby decided he didn't want to play Bond anymore.
I agree. Although, more seem to love it than hate it. I'm an extreme minority. Not only did I not care for it, I'd rank it as my least favorite. Sacrilege I know to many fans but that's how I view it. Yes, I even prefer A View to a Kill or Quantum of Solace to it, but not by much-- lol.
From what I'm to understand, this one is the "sleeper hit" of the series. Having bettered by the years gone by. I'm on the side of Bond fans that love this film. It's definitely TOP 5 material in my opinion.
OHMSS doesn't interest me to this day. I still wonder what scenes did Lazenby actually use his voice, because there well several scenes that had his lines dubbed over. My father (who was 23 in 1969, also considers it very underwhelming, and still much prefers either Conner or Moore as the best Bond actors). I personally am not taking after my father, I just find OHMSS itself quite lame. My favorite Bond actors have been either Conner, Moore, Dalton or Brosnan. Craig doesn't interest me, so I don't bother with his movies, for they feel like Jason Bourne ripoffs (which my father likes very much on the other hand.)
Dhan Chordkillo it didn’t do well at box office and was considered a flop but over the years critics and fans have warmed up to it and consider it to be one of the best Bond films and probably more underrated.
I Finally took the time to watch OHMSS and my goodness it's one of the best James Bond films I ever watched. It has one of the best Bond Women in the entire James Bond franchise, Diana Rigg truly shines in the movie. It has incredible character development, making you care deeply about the characters in their situation, Blofeld was an awesome villIan that has shown a dark and ruthless presence. George Lazenby as James Bond wasn't the best choice of casting, but I gotta give him credit for the emotional part he did in his scenes, plus the action was fun and exciting. It can drag for some people when George Lazenby does his fake impersonation half way during the movie, but after that part is over you won't regret watching the rest of the movie. It's a truly great, unique and a beautiful masterpiece. The ending was very deep and very powerful.
@@TheGingerGeekShow half Scottish half Swiss that grew up in England, he wouldn’t have a Scottish accent! Plus that would make him basically English as his parents died when he was young, so he wouldn’t have inherited much Scottish tradition!
This one is my number 4. Loved this. Its got an interesting plot. Some great locations. It was pretty serious not too silly. Action was only done when necessary. Diana Rigg was awesome. Its got the best score out of all the Bond movies. Only problem was Lazenby and I thought he did a pretty good job.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of my favourites flicks from the series and it's in my top 5! It's actually on the third place in my list. Again, just like Goldfinger, a major part of the movie takes place in Switzerland, my home country and I also visited the Schilthorn Piz Gloria which is a really nice place. And I definitely recommend every Die Hard Bondfan to visit this location! George Lazenby himself also gives a great performance in the film but I read that sometimes he was complicated to deal with behind the scenes. When I saw it for the first time, it actually was my all-time favourite James Bond film. The plot itself is OK but the cinematography, the continuity and the atmosphere is what I really love here! I'm giving it a 10/10.
I simply can't imagine a flabby, aging Connery in this film. And I don't think the chemistry between him and Rigg would have worked. It's definitely in my top 5.
LOVE these. Please keep them coming! A great way to review the films and analyze them in sequence. Great notes for the less initiated among us. Keep it up!
I met Diana Rigg 5 years ago at a business event at The Grosvenor House Hotel London - my dad asked if I could get her autograph (he loved her in the Avengers Tv show in the mid-60s). I completely forgot 😢
I used to own an RCA CED disc of this movie. After the end credits are played, and the screen goes dark, the disc actually played on for a few minutes, while they played the Louis Armstrong vocal version of the love theme. Kind of like a play out while you leave the theater, with a tear in your eye. Anyway, that's about as close as it got to having your option of the instrumental playing at the end credits.
as I wait for the next bond everything ... the world is filled with bad people, for bond to kill ... remake on her majesty secret service ....the most underated film of all time ...
I think she did like Bond already but was reluctant to give herself up. I know Bond breaking the fourth wall was a bit silly, but no sillier than the stuff you saw in diamonds , you only live twice. Plus all the Moore films. I thought this film was a good way to go with the franchise but we all know what happened next. Found the review fun to listen to, totally agree with you on the second half dragging a little , The therapy was so boring to me.
Imagine a flashback showing Tracy brutalized by a boyfriend to the point of suicide, and the trauma from that turning her cold to men until Bond warms her up. The flashback would develop character and give wider setting. The boyfriend could be a thug who Bond plugs later, perhaps endearing her to him in a male fantasy way. Shoot the villain and get the girl.
Yeah. But I think by the way tracy acted it got over point that she was troubled. Considering the other films in the series didn't have that kind of development I think it would have been too much of a change from the usual formula.
While this movie will always be my favorite film (and Lazenby my favorite Bond), I do admit this movie isn't perfect as you said (dates not adding up, the "Scottish" dress (while I loved all of the other suits, that's always the one outfit I disliked), the Sir Hillary Bray voice in parts). But even with it's problems, the uniqueness, score, and plot of this film just always captivate me. And while I know other fans will always be divided over him, to me, Lazenby just comes off as cool, suave, and the most "Bond" of all the James Bonds. But hey that's just me and it's always good to see both sides of the spectrum. An excellent review my friend, and props to you for being honest about this movie. :)
Thanks! I felt this was the most difficult one to do as it is so loved (and I can understand why!) It really comes to show how nice the Bond community is and how intrested and supportive people are of fellow fans's opinions! That is really great, even if someone's opinion is on the direct opposite of the spectrum! Thanks for the kind words! Hope to see you around more!
The guy helping Bond was not one of "Draco's goons" - but was Campbell, another MI6 agent. His "demise" in the book, is one of the most thrilling and chilling chapters in ANY Bond novel.
I quite like this film. It may not be the best, but it is very nice. The ending moves me to tears every time. Tracy was Bond's true love, much more than even Vesper was later on.
One of the best Bond movies ever. Which is odd considering the story doesn't kick in till around 30 minutes in. Lazenby maybe wooden, but the man can pack a punch and that alone makes him memorable. The production values are excellent, John Barry gives one of the best Bond scores and the ski chases is phenomenal. Sorry but the opening looks brilliant and it plays to Lazenby's strengths, Diana Rigg as Tracy is superb and is the best Bond girl up till then, its a shame we won't get such a strong and sensual Bond girl till Goldeneye. Sure the middle section at Piz Gloria may seem jarring but thr ski chases more than make up for it. Not to mention the final attack is fantastic, I mean would Brosnan or even Connery slide down an icey ground on his stomach whilst firing a machine gun?! These brilliant set pieces make you feel Bond being put through the wringer, him and Tracy go through hell together, and when that ending comes up it is heartbreaking and a total downer. A great film that I'm glad is discovering.
George condoles Connery when he sadly passes on: Only a few weeks ago I was wishing Sean all the best for his 90th birthday. Now, I'm very sad to be condoling with his family and friends. Of course, Sean Connery as James Bond inspired me personally but seems to have encapsulated an age, the Sixties. I met Sean a couple of times and I was pleased he'd given my Bond film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, his seal of approval. He was going to do my film many times and felt it was the best of the Fleming tales. But, to me, the most important thing was his work went far beyond Bond: into charity, into family, into politics and into golf. A man after my own heart. A great actor, a great man and underappreciated artist has left us. My thoughts are with Lady Micheline and Sean's children and grandchildren. Only love, George XXX instagram.com/p/CHBC5s7jl-d/
The flashing ceiling lights that hypnotize women to spread infertility makes no sense on a literal level but is brilliant cultural satire as metaphor for late '60 psychedelia and hippie chicks who overthrew traditional male sexual dominance, which was actually happening at that time.
The degree to which GL has been reviled amazes me. His acting was superb for a man with such limited experience. He brought exactly what the script called for and executed almost flawlessly. If he’d have been in two more movies he would have gotten greater acclaim. His only “sin” is that he isn’t Connery.
I just love the little trivia fact that Rigg and Lazenby hated each other so much, that George ate raw onions before every scene just to mess with her. He was the king of the Trolls!
Lazenby could have been a great Bond in the long run. He does a surprisingly good job in this film which I believe stands as one of the best in the series.
Tracy is the greatest Bond girl. The skating scene, Bond is cowering, scared. She rescues him. She drives the car in a Bond way. She's the only girl Bond himself ever wanted to marry, which is something no one can ever argue against.
Despite Lazenby's wooden acting, his combat skills were impressive and made his fight scenes stand out a lot more than Sir Sean's scuffles, save for the Orient Express battle with Red Grant. Great direction and editing, an awesome Bond Girl and my personal favorite Blofeld. Nice recap/review!
Such an underrated James Bond film. On Her Majesty's Secret Service wasnt a Bond film that I was too keen on when I was a kid but I have really grown to love and appreciate it more as an adult. Especially since seeing Casino Royale and all of the Daniel Craig James Bond films. OHMSS has a great story, great action sequences, a great Bond girl and a great Bond villain. Sure George Lazenby is wooden as hell as James Bond and his performance is definetly my least favourite part of the film but he does do his best in some scenes. Especially during his fight scenes and the film's tragic and heartbreaking ending. Overall I think that On Her Majesty's Secret Service is a great James Bond film and it truly is a hidden gem in the Bond franchise.
The so-called 4th wall-breaking line when he says "This never happened to the other fellow." could just be a reference to Prince Charming in Cinderella as Lazenby is clearly seen picking up Tracy's shoes. I personally think it's a great line that doesn't definitely refer to Connery.
I think its a really obvious nod to Sean Connery. I´ve never liked it since i don´t like when movies break the 4th wall since it takes you out of the movie.
EISperwtardo As you said, it's a nod to Connery. Until today, none of the new Bond say something for his predecessor. This shows that Connery is still Bond for the viewers and for Lazenby (didn't say ''This never happened to the other movies'').
26:45 I actually remember feeling quite emotional when Lazenby says “We have all the time in the world.” I’m glad I’m not the only one who found the Bond theme to be jarring at the end.
This review is GOLD - well done! I'm a big OHMSS fan, and originally wasn't. It has grown on me over the years and is probably the only Bond film I can go back to time & time again. Would Connery have made it a better film? I don't think so. Similar to how everyone loved Daniel Craig in his first outing, I think we all as the viewers can empathise more with the main character if he isn't full of over-confidence/machismo & gadgets to the eyeballs. Connery's worst outing was when they brought him back for DAF, where he looked positively bored. I imagine he would have turned in a similar performance for OHMSS & what a tragedy that would have been. Well - that's my theory :)
My favourite James Bond film. The action and drama get along without issues, the late, beautiful and talented Diana Rigg, and the best Blofeld in the form of Telly Savalas.
I never thought of the fact that we never saw the girls get caught as much of a plot hole. We saw Bond photographing their locations, so we can expect that he reported it to MI6 who could then track them down before Blofeld had a chance to find a new radio transmitter capable of reaching them. All probably well before the wedding. A bit quick, sure, but it was not important enough to need more detail. Oh, yes, Norwegian bombshell of the time, Julie Ege, was one of the girls. The second one he banged. :-) Patriotism dictates that I always seek out Norwegian connections in the movies, but this was the most major one all the time until No Time To Die which actually had a major bit located here, and Norway was actually used for Norway. I've been annoyed that Norway was mentioned in a number of Marvel movies, but they never actually shot here until Black Widow.
"This never happened to the other fella" Is a brilliant line, stop being so snobby! Until Casino Royale, this was my favourite Bond film, now it's 2nd! Moonraker's 3rd btw.
"This never happened to the other guy" is not referring to Connery. Its the fact he has 2 shoes left behind. Not one like prince charming in Cinderella.
This probably isn't true, but just a thought. There's no real way that Blofeld found out that Sir Hillary was actually Bond, so it could be that he recognized Bond from the start and was just waiting for the right moment to kill him.
There is a missing scene where Bond was recorded in the college with Bray. He had to chase him through London .. where he pushed the fella onto a railway line. It's followed up when Bond arrives in Switzerland and his colleague is reading a newspaper that says 18 people died in a train crash ( a fake story to cover up the earlier incident). Obviously it is possible that the fella got a message across to Piz Gloria.
The music at the end has a slightly different tone or pitch reflecting a darkness to the ending whilst at the same time not being too mournful, which is a good thing. You don't want people leaving the theatre feeling too miserable. After all, its a Bond movie. The pacing always bothered me too though, there is literally a good 45 minutes in the middle of the film without any action...then it's almost non-stop action in the last 45 minutes or so. However....I am one of those who really likes it enough to call it my favourite Bond movie. Not necessarily the best, just my favourite.
One of my favourites in the series, just off my top five.. 1# Casino Royale, 2# Licence To Kill, 3# From Russia With Love, 4# The Spy Who Loved Me, 5# The Living Daylights, 6# On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
I enjoyed Diana Rigg's performance in The Assassination Bureau (also in 1969, and also featuring Telly Savalas), much more than in OHMSS. She also looked a lot more beautiful in The Assassination Burea than in OHMSS.
Thanks for this great video. OHMSS is Definitely one of my favorite Bond movie. Bond movies always reflect the era -slightly ahead of its time-and this movie does it so well. It feels like early 70’s. George Lazenby, though not an actor does a fine job. He was mainly chosen for his good look, his physic and great ability to fight. And his fights are the best IMO up to that time. Awesome cinematography, great Bond girl.
In my opinion they already fell in love on the beach and both suppressed it for their own reasons- thrown together again neither can hold there defences and give in to their emotions.
My mother is in this film :)
She was an au pair in Grindewald in 1968 at the age of 20 and the film crew of this film needed the whole town as extras and so she's in the film :)
Stenbrotsgatan holy shit thats great!
I know...its thanks to my mother I became a Bond fan. When I was younger I watched the film on tv and and my mother came in to the room and said: "oh that's the film I'm in!". So I said "you're in a movie?" Then I found out there were more of these films....and the rest is history.
Amazing!!
You lucky so and so. I wished that I was lucky as you
Cool!
RIP Tracy... RIP Diana Rigg.😟 One of the best bond girls if not the best!
Personally my favourite
This and Dalton's movies are so underrated. Great movie
Greenfield121 yeah
Two of the great travesties were Dalton not being in Goldeneye and Lazenby not doing Diamonds are Forever.
@@joehawkiins8712 I believe to Dalton in ''A View to a Kill'' and Connery in O.H.M.S.S.
Why are these movies always called underrated even though they are at the top of the rankings everywhere.. I really dont get this
@@davider6884 not seen these films on the top of any rankings. They are underrated primarily due to the as actor playing Bond is not mentioned much
The crazy thing is, Lazenby was 30 when the film came out in 1969.
Well I initially thought of it the same way, but wasn’t the period of bond’s vacation only 2 weeks?
I always wonder what the franchise would have been if he got the chance to grow as an actor with each film.
@@robashlicarrafa4876 man all the Moore films but with a less campy and more physical Bond. It would have been brilliant.
At least Lazenby was good as Bond, he really tried to pick up from where Connery had left.
Oh come on this movie sucks
Fun fact: On the first take where James is emotional over Tracy's death, George Lazenby actually had a tear streaming down his cheek, because he was thinking of the end of the novel, which made him cry. In another take, George Lazenby cried less than the first take. Eventually, Peter Hunt (the director of this movie), said, "Let's just do one take without the tears. James Bond doesn't cry." And thus, we get the take that made into the final film where Bond doesn't cry at all, but is still emotional.
"This never happened to the other fellow" is also a take on the Cinderella story, only Bond has been left two slippers.
The only Bond movie to have ever made me cry. Diana Rigg played the role so beautifully
With the logic of Lazenby's choice, Diana Rigg doesn't need in the movie. A blonde model (Tracy is blonde in book) must take the role.
it's a great bond film actually. I mainly like the skiing scene with the awesome theme music. One of the best themes ever.
I don't like the film, but I do agree about the skiing scenes and the score. They are the highlights and probably the best parts of the movie.
Nirmal Kumar The bobdsledding scene is a high light to and ski chases. Having Bond chased by Blofelds men is suspenseful and shows a human side to Bond as looks worried and alone until Tracy finds him. Tracy is one of the best Bond girls in the series
Great for action and Blofeld, everything else leaves a lot to be desired.

Even if they had made DAF as a proper followup I still would have preferred that they kept the scene for the end of OHMSS.
Connery would of been up for this...watch the end of robin and Marian and see true emotion.
Great movie. Lazenby was fine. He would have only got better if he’d stuck around.
Agreed. He should have done a few more.
The Bond theme kicking in at the end is appropriate as Bond's brutal world imposes itself and he realises he will never be rid of it.
This is seriously one of the best Bond films. Diana Rigg is perfection in her role. The cinematography is amazing. It's the strongest and most believable love story.
PS - I love the "This didn't happen to the other fellow" line 😉
The line is lovely, but shows that Connery is still Bond for everyone. Lazenby didn't say "This never happened to the other movies''.
True!! And It is well balanced. It never gets boring. This and The Spy Who Loved Me are my number 1 James Bond movies.
I think the line was unnecessary but didn’t ruin it. The line I dislike more is “He had a lot of guts.”
Yes indeed.
It reads more like a documentary given recent events. A similar theme is found within Moonraker.
Michael Reed's camera work is easily some of the greatest in the series. Too bad he never did another Bond movie.
Very true!
@@chitown1782
Bleak? You mean underlit? Never saw that once. At worst, there were shots that were made because they were the easiest to set-up but the camera placement in many of the indoor scenes beyond the stagey stuff of the past Bond films. I think Freddie Young's location cinematography in YOLT was fantastic but a lot of the indoor stuff was weak.
Bond wears the "weird outfit" (kilt etc etc) is because he was of Scottish descent!!
It’s because Hilary Bray is of Scottish descent, it’s while he’s disguised as him
April 2020...it looks as if Blofeld has succeeded...
Should have sent Bond to Wuhan
back in December . ? Problem

True
George Lazenby’s terror when the goons chased him into the village seemed genuine to me. For someone who never acted before, I think Lazenby did quite well.
I can't believe you didn't mention the spectre soldier who fell into the snowblower!
Rod Hannah he had a lot of guts
Only thing is Lazenby kind of ruined this line - he doesn't say "He had a lot of guts!" he says, "He had lots of guts!" which just makes it sound a bit weird.
@@DM-kv9kj i find it hilarious still

Felipe Rico He did a good job, just wanting him in another Bond movie, same with Dalton
FR 87 you r right
Lazenby was fine in the role, and hardly “Austin Powers”.

You mean his "successor" not "predecessor". Connery would be Lazenby's predecessor. -- AT
Yes, I think that one got pointed out before.
Me neither! Looking forward to talking about those too! I love working on these, and it's great that people like you love watching them!
Mmmm. Isn´t he both?

27:12 I agree it should have been a Instrumental Version of "All the Time in the World"
Right before Bond gives chase to Blofeld in the climax, he takes pictures of the map that shows the location of the "Angels of Death." After Blofeld's defeat and the destruction of his base, the virus was probably taken care of off-screen thanks to the intel that Bond provided.
Just like bulky Daniel Craig walks like a block of concrete
Diana Rigg is undoubtedly the best actress to play a Bond girl and Telly Savalas' take on Blofeld is just flawless.
Lazenby ruins this movie. Every frame he is in is horrible. He is just not Bond and turns this into the most unwatchable James bond movie ever
Lazenby was right for this movie.

Definitely a fan here, this movie is an underrated gem and Lazenby, if he was only gonna be in one film, gave it his all.
Thank you. These are the best James Bond reviews and have provided a wealth of background info I was never aware of like Lozenby's audition).
I think that this film is either one of one's favourite Bond films or the worst. There seems to be no middle ground!
I don't see how anyone can hate this movie
I thought George made a great Bond, and to romance Diana Rigg...what a thrill.I wish George had done more Bond films.
"Weirdest costume Bond has worn" a scotsman wearing a kilt, very odd.
He’s Australian
@@matthudson9705 the character is scottish!
@@TheGingerGeekShow half Scottish half Swiss that grew up in England, he wouldn’t have a Scottish accent! Plus that would make him basically English as his parents died when he was young, so he wouldn’t have inherited much Scottish tradition!
Maybe it was because he was in disguise pretending to be a genealogist
Best music, thanks John Barry.
Poseidon63 arguably the finest James bond score. Berry excels.
I agree. It has my favorite music score of all of the Bond films to date.
View To A Kill.
The instrumental is really incredible.
That's about where it sits for me. Maybe # 5 on my list.
19:44 - Hey, I don't remember Clark Kent being in this movie...
Talking of Clark Kent... 5:15 - the guy left of Lazenby looks like could be Henry Cavill‘s father
I'm giving it a 10/10.
great to see another review up mate your doing a very good job on these
+col06 Thanks a lot bro!
FR84
I simply can't imagine a flabby, aging Connery in this film. And I don't think the chemistry between him and Rigg would have worked. It's definitely in my top 5.
LOVE these. Please keep them coming! A great way to review the films and analyze them in sequence. Great notes for the less initiated among us. Keep it up!
+Rod Hannah Thank you so much! You'll be pleased to here that the next episode is currently in full production :)
I met Diana Rigg 5 years ago at a business event at The Grosvenor House Hotel London - my dad asked if I could get her autograph (he loved her in the Avengers Tv show in the mid-60s). I completely forgot 😢
The best part of this movie was the casting of Mrs. Peel (Diana Rigg) and the main Bond girl. She is the only reason I ever watch this one.
She was the true star of the movie
I used to own an RCA CED disc of this movie. After the end credits are played, and the screen goes dark, the disc actually played on for a few minutes, while they played the Louis Armstrong vocal version of the love theme. Kind of like a play out while you leave the theater, with a tear in your eye.
Anyway, that's about as close as it got to having your option of the instrumental playing at the end credits.
Never knew there was a version like that! Thanks for sharing!
as I wait for the next bond everything ... the world is filled with bad people, for bond to kill ... remake on her majesty secret service ....the most underated film of all time ...
Happy 50th anniversary OHMSS👍💕
Thank you very much. In the words of Sean Connery..."Chow".
The guy helping Bond was not one of "Draco's goons" - but was Campbell, another MI6 agent. His "demise" in the book, is one of the most thrilling and chilling chapters in ANY Bond novel.
How you said 'Holy Shit that mist be suicide then!' was so funny i fell of my chair XD, Great work DBF! its good to see you back on UA-cam again!
I climbed Schilthorn today and visited the OHMSS museum up there. Really nice to watch your video after the tour.
I was lucky enough to see mr. Lazenby in 2008.
Many Alps towns have winter festivals. Some of them feature cars races over the frozen streets & roads.
Or it anticipated Charles Manson and his ability to hypnotize women to do his will?
It is not just that Bond blows up the radio. He uses his Minox miniature camera to identify the girls.
good to see you back on youtube man
This is the first time I have seen a less-than-enthusiastic review of this movie that was also fair. Exceptionally well done.
26:23 Lazenby did great acting all the way through. That's how it is.
The degree to which GL has been reviled amazes me. His acting was superb for a man with such limited experience. He brought exactly what the script called for and executed almost flawlessly. If he’d have been in two more movies he would have gotten greater acclaim. His only “sin” is that he isn’t Connery.
Agreed! I totally identified with his character from the first scenes of the film.
No he is horrible mostly. Only some scenes are good. The ending is performed especially well by him. But he sucks mostly. He's just not bond
@@philhellmuth2771 You gotta consider that he didnt have any acting experience when this movie was made. And for that, he did a pretty damn swell job
@@davider6884 that might be true, however compared to a real actor he still sucks mostly
Diana Rigg gives a fantastic role in this movie.
At 25:59, Monneypenny is like 'you should marry me' LOL
Abuse of the govt. property-james told Monypenny, when she made a proposal to him.
Wow! Eon should include your recommendation for the closing credits as an option on their next DVD release of this movie.
My favorite film from the 007 series. I find that this film is either love it or hate it.
If you do a drinking game with this video series and have to take a shot everytime 'chick' or 'bang' is mentioned, you will not survive the night.
The part at the start when Bond fights in the ocean is easy to explain: Tides, obviously.
One of the best Bond films ever made.
"This never happened to the other fella" Is a brilliant line, stop being so snobby! Until Casino Royale, this was my favourite Bond film, now it's 2nd! Moonraker's 3rd btw.
I also like this line, and shows that Connery is still Bond for everyone. Lazenby didn't say ''This never happened to the other movies''.
It shows and emphasizes that 007 is a new guy.
My god Diana Rigg...... gawd..... perfectionism.... fuck.....
"This never happened to the other guy" is not referring to Connery. Its the fact he has 2 shoes left behind. Not one like prince charming in Cinderella.
This probably isn't true, but just a thought. There's no real way that Blofeld found out that Sir Hillary was actually Bond, so it could be that he recognized Bond from the start and was just waiting for the right moment to kill him.
my thoughts exactly.
Would it fix the continuity errors to think of OHMSS as a prequel to You Only Live Twice, or does that make things worse?
Always loved the way Terry holds his cigarette
You mean Telly.
Diana Rigg 20 July 1938 - 10 September 2020 Goodbye. We don't have all the time in the world.
I enjoyed Diana Rigg's performance in The Assassination Bureau (also in 1969, and also featuring Telly Savalas), much more than in OHMSS. She also looked a lot more beautiful in The Assassination Burea than in OHMSS.
I do remember strongly liking the book.
At about 5:22 you say he became Conner's predecessor. Actually he becomes Sean's successor and Sean is Lazenby's predecessor.
I wish diana rigg (my fav)had said "the names peel .Emma peel""
it might have been a good corny bond line .... as I suspect it actually says "M" a peel. as in man appeal.
