    Fun Fact #3:
The sound effects used for the car crushing sequence were resused in Steven Spielberg's *"DUEL"* (after
The Tanker crashed into David Mann's car before it fell down the cliff -
only in the film's original Mono Mix)
and *"JAWS"* (when the Orca's engine began to cough up black smoke as Quint sped up his boat, before the engine explodes, stranding Chief Brody, Quint, & Hooper on a slowly sinking ship).

It's still my favorite one in the series!
It might not be the best written one.
but the character of Goldfinger, Sean Connery's performance makes this movie still so engaging and entertaining to watch. Even all these years later

The scene where Solo is squished: Like many items in earlier Bond films, you have to be of a certain age to appreciate this scene. The Lincoln Continental here was the apex luxury car in the US at the time. A custom black Lincoln Continental of this type was the presidential car, that President Kennedy was assassinated in, in 1963. There is a reason that the camera lingers a bit on the car before the wrecking jaws plunge into the roof.
A younger generation might find the crushing of the car slow and boring.... but I assure you, back in 1964 a person would be thinking, "Holy Cow!....they're crushing a Lincoln Continental!" A well made side scene that further demonstrates how wealthy and powerful Goldfinger is, to destroy such a beautiful car just to off some mob guy. (Akin to going that extra villain style mile by painting Jill Masterson gold, rather than just leaving her dead in Bond's bed.)
Fort Knox gold set: Long ago the public could go in small tour groups and actually see the gold holding room in the New York Federal Reserve building. In it is the gold of foreign governments, central banks, and institutions .... sent mostly for safekeeping to the US during WWII. At its height approx 12,000 tons of monetary gold was stored here... more than the 10,500 suggested by Bond for Ft. Knox's holdings. I mention this as I was on that tour several times...the gold is held in compartments looking very small and very boring. (One can google NY Fed gold vault and see pictures.) It is certainly nothing like the absolutely stunning set in "Goldfinger". That set is truly an inspired marvel !
Again, in any period category for early Bond films, "Goldfinger" is my #1 ( with #2 being "From Russia With Love")

I agree entirely about the crushing of the Lincoln Continental. There’s also the added sadism of having Mr Solo’s body crushed along with the vehicle (and James Bond would have no way of knowing if Solo was crushed alive or not).
And I view the Fort Knox set along the same lines as the set at Auric Enterprises with the Fort Knox model revolving into place, the enormous black and white photograph swinging down, and the moving floor-it all makes no sense if you think about it for 10 seconds (why would Goldfinger have such an elaborate setup for two minutes of exposition?) but you’re not _supposed_ to think about it at all. (Similarly, Goldfinger could just have Bond killed in any number of ways-he doesn’t have to set up a high-tech laser to slice him down the middle-but where’s the fun in that? The movie is _entertainment_ above all else, except making money, that is.) It just fits the audience’s fantasy of the type of thing a Bond villain would set up, just like Ken Adam’s most-renowned set, the War Room in _Dr Strangelove,_ fits what audiences _could_ imagine such a room might look like.

Regarding the barn scene, I think intent is very important. The filmmakers didn't intend for it to be rapey. When Alec forcibly kisses Natalya on the train in GoldenEye, the intent of the filmmakers is to show he is a nasty despicable person. The intent of the barn scene in Goldfinger is to show a playful seduction. This was done in a way that was an acceptable portrayal for its time. In more enlightened times after society has evolved from the 1960s, modern audiences might not view it as playful seduction and they are correct. But it is unfair to criticise a 1960s film for failing to live up to the standards of the 21st century when the filmmakers didn't intend to portray anything malicious..

My interpretation when I saw the film in the 90s: Either I knew her character was a lesbian or I just figured it from clues, especially the “your charm won’t work one me” line. That’s about as far as you could go in the 60s to imply being gay. A guy like Bond back then wouldn’t accept that. So he was trying to break the “spell” and have her “come to her senses,” which back in the 60s, sadly the prevailing attitude was, “she just needs to find the right man” and everything will be ok. I think that’s what the filmmakers were going for as it was a masculine idea at the time that someone could be “cured” of it if you were sexy enough.

You're right. I don't think the scenes have aged well by today's standards (rightfully so), but in the early Bond movies, we have to look at the scenes with nuance and the context in the time this was made. The world was pretty shitty and backwards. Bond did what he did in order to get her to succumb to his charms and do whatever he wants - save the lives of the people in Fort Knox. I get it, but yeah that's not the way to get someone to like you. At all.
The nuance behind it is that Bond is a heroic character but does flawed things, because "the ends justify the means". It's been that way since the Ian Fleming novels. That being said, I much prefer the heroic, badass aspects of the character and when he actually gives a shit about people (like the Dalton ones). Not so much the sexist, r***y shit from the 60's/70's Bond movies.

Nothing about Goldfinger is overrated but many Bond films have an edge over it. FRWL, OHMSS, and CR have better plots, action and set pieces. Goldfinger could've easily been an Octopussy, AVTAK or TND but its all down to how perfectly executed every aspect is. Not saying those are bad films but they're more "carry-on" movies. They have the same clever plot beats and ingredients as Goldfinger but not the combination of casting, direction, score and stylings to leave it feeling more like "true cinema" if that makes sense.
I've always preferred the more meaty Bond plots with more characters, espionage and twists. Goldfinger is the other type of Bond story, which is pure Bond-villain relationship. Think the Moonraker novel vs the Casino Royale one. I'll always love Goldfinger as both great entertainment and a cinematic revolution, but it's definitely beneath some of the other films I mentioned.

I'm in the "slightly overrated" camp, with emphasis on slightly. I think it has possibly the best opening of any Bond film, and that really helps to set the mood, but I like both the Bond girls and the villains a bit more in, say, Thunderball (but that movie does not have the best opening IMO). I think my favorite is From Russia With Love though.

    Fun Fact #2:
Bond girl Honor Blackman and several other actors in the Bond films previously starred in the 1958 Titanic docudrama film: *"A Night To Remember".*
She played Mrs. Liz Lucas, a 1st Class wife who was convinced by her husband, Robbie, to get into a lifeboat with their 3 children, though he stayed behind.
Michael Goodliffe (Bill Tanner, *"The Man With The Golden Gun")* played Titanic's designer Thomas Andrews.
Laurence Naismith (Sir Donald, *"Diamonds Are Forever")* played Titanic's captain Edward John Smith.
Desmond Llewelyn (Q, 1963-1971, 1974-1999) played a steward that kept 3rd Class passengers from entering 1st Class.
Peter Burton (Q, *"Dr. No")* played a 1st Class steward.
Geoffrey Bayldon (Q, *"Casino Royale 1967")* played Californian's wireless operator Cyril Evans.
Alec McCowen (Algernon or "Algy", *"Never Say Never Again")* played Carpathia's wireless operator Harold Cottam.
Jeremy Bulloch (Smithers, *"For Your Eyes Only"* & *"Octopussy")* played a boy that jumped into the water.
    Sean Connery supposedly had a
    cameo somewhere in the film,
but this was confirmed to be false.
Although, according to the Cast &
    Crew Commentary of *"TITANIC"*
    (1997), Connery & Gene Hackman
were at first considered to play
the treasure hunter Brock Lovett, before they eventually went with Bill Paxton.

Excellent review. The film has issues and is far from being my favourite Bond film, but the impact it had on the rest of the series cannot be underestimated. It really needs to be judged at the time of it's release not 2023. Just to add, it's also one of the shorter Bond films in terms of running time, which helps it a lot. It's a really tight story that doesn't get bogged down with loads of subplots that some of the more recent films suffer from.

Good to see you back Jeroen. I've never really understood the argument that Bond does little towards his mission in Goldfinger. Without him Goldfinger would have succeeded in radiating the gold at Fort Knox. Bond is captured so has to thwart Goldfinger in any way he can. I think you put your points across regarding this very well Jeroen. It's certainly not overrated and probably sits in my top 5 Bond films.. certainly top 10. Connery is at the top of his game. So many iconic scenes and my favourite Bond villain make Goldfinger in my opinion a classic.

I’ve never understood why people in every review even question the reason Goldfinger briefs condemned gangsters. The answer is in the movie. Bond says to Goldfinger: “I did enjoy your briefing”. Goldfinger answers “So did I”, a cue sounds, he turns away and rather callously leaves. Yes, he did enjoy his own briefing, this is the reason. There is so much emphasis put on this moment in the movie, and I’m furious people never mention this while talking about the issue.

Also, in the Fort Knox flyover sequence, the lethal gas wasn’t replaced with something to put everyone to sleep… the soldiers were just instructed to fake it when the planes passed overhead… which is why their reaction looks so unrealistic.

Also, Gert's voice can be heard in the film's trailer with the line: "Choose

Sean made a film called Woman of Straw starring alongside Gina Lollobrigida and Ralf Richardson
It was released in around April 64 but was filmed between August and October 1963.
    Spoiler Alert
At the wedding reception Sean wears White Tuxedo
This was one and the same he wore in GOLDFINGER

You've made a persuasive case; and well done for picking the film apart. I have two concerns about Goldfinger that hold it back for me. The first is that I think your phrase, 'it pretty much has something iconic on the screen every ten minutes', is true, and is the film's big disadvantage. For me the iconography overshadows the story. This is also true of The Spy Who Loved Me. The second problem is common to James Bond movies, but happened first in Goldfinger, of what to do with Bond when he is introduced early to the villain. The villain has to find ingenious ways to dispose of him, he has to find ingenious ways to survive. It becomes tedious; which the villain usually admits. I watched all the films in order of release date last week and assessed them on a ten point ranking scale, an attempt to be objective and put all preferences aside. I recommend this. Goldfinger was in 19th place at 76 percent

Great review. If you look for logic, Goldfinger will not look that good. If you purely take it as entertainment, you can enjoy it any time. I kindly suggest you to do a video on below topics
    1) Dr No vs Goldfinger movies. First one that got Bond on to screen and the other one that perfected. Dr No also has its iconic settings and one liners. Its more tense. So a comparison would be great.
    2) What if Fleming was alive after 1964...what kind of novels we could have expected and their influence on movies. I have read all the novels and I felt that by the time of last novel The Man With The Golden Gun, Fleming had reached some kind of irony in life and its reflects in the tone of the Bond characterization. Only if he would had been more active.

I think goldfinger just keeping bond there was smarter than most think. Remember when felix and that dude see him with goldfinger and say not to interrupt him because he's clearly making progress. Goldfinger in his mind had MI6 convinced bond was fine and didn't need help or a replacement. Which is exactly what happened. He only had backup way way later. The personal pilot point though I 100% agree is true.

Goldfinger has creative geography. We're told that Goldfinger's jet would arrive at Blue Grass Field. In 1964, that was in Lexington, Kentucky. Lexington is 80 miles from Louisville, Kentucky Louisville is *another 35 miles* from Fort Knox. Apparently, Auric Stud is in Louisville. That's still not very close to Fort Knox. In real life, *I went to Fort Knox* in 1980 for work. The geography is totally messed up.

One point just occured to me - the original crime for which Goldfinger is investigated ,(smuggling gold) for is not the crime with which the movie ends and the original crime plot actually go nowhere.

So for me at least this all mounts up to my personal favourite Bond film.

Regardless of Goldfinger's faults, I'd never say it's overrated. It's just the formula has been rehashed ever since, so there's a danger that the faults tend to stand out far greater than the positives. Honestly though, has Bond ever been cooler than Sean Connery single handedly destroying a drugs factory, then casually strolling into a bar in a white tuxedo?

This movie irritates me because it's the film that "pg'd" 007 from an "R" character. In the book, Galore, a lesbian with life experience, basically changed sides to stay out of jail, and Bond decides to exonerate her after she becomes intimate with him. In other words, she probably seduced him to avoid jail, which is very realistic. In the film Bond's magic penis flips her loyalty. Silly. The book had 007 use his personal concealed shoe heel daggers to plan knifing Goldfinger, but he changes on the fly to taking down the plane along with himself, with the dagger to the window. The films never showed Bond's heel daggers (which always irritated me, but at least Bond killed with knives in Dr No and FRWL), and Goldfinger goes through the plane window in a comical depiction rather than being strangled by Bond (as was literary Blofeld). As far as the barn scene WHO CARES what Bond did, she was about to murder thousands of soldiers and it was Bond's last ditch attempt to stop a mass murder. In the book, Bond got the note to Felix by himself, and Galore wasn't the one that was going to poison the troops, it was going to be other henchmen poisoning the soldiers by water, Felix stopped it. In the film, this woman was about to drop nerve gas on an Army base full of humans, so I don't really see why people GAF what Bond did to her. Plus, it was just a silly fight scene to show 007 having a judo match with Blackman who was known for being a judoka and martial arts scenes in the Avengers show. The novels' buzz saw torture being replaced by a laser, Bond being dumb enough to bed Jill in the same hotel where he had just blackmailed Goldfinger (unrealistically stupid for Bond), when in the book he ran off with her and traveled for a while only finding out later she was dead having been dumb enough to go back to Goldfinger afterward (unwise on her part but realistic), omitting the fact that Jill's job was to have sex with GF in gold paint to satisfy his gold fetish ("just seen", ok) all just neutered the tone. Connery is great and my favorite, but it's hard to believe this Bond making funny faces at guards was the same guy who knifed Red Grant on the Orient Express in the last film. I do give the film credit for the scene where GF murders the mobsters, it was to hilariously subvert expectations of those who read the novel and the stupid concept of actually stealing the gold, I did appreciate that alteration.

Meh, its no A View to a Kill good, but ok. Just kidding! Honestly i think it comes down to if a person enjoys older cinema or not. Some people cringe at the thought of watching a black and white movie. People today are only now discovering movies from the 80's. Those who grew up with older movies seem to feel them more and appreciate their value. Goldfinger brings back those feelings of younger days, and its much better than many current movies today.

  • @varanid9

Yeah, Goldfinger's reasoning for keeping Bond alive is questionable in both the film and the book. In the book, he didn't kill the gangsters; he needed them to help his scheme. Their killing in the movie makes zero sense. The reason the car crushing sequence goes on so long is that most people in the audience weren't familiar with the machine and was a novelty to them in those days. As for the grape scene, remember Bond is a "good bad guy". He made her enjoy it so it's OK. Alright, maybe not, but Connery's Bond is NOT a role model. He also blackmails a girl into sex in Thunderball, takes full advantage of femme fatales pretending to go for him, etc. He also shoots a guy in the back in From Russia with Love and shoots another guy in cold blood in Doctor No. I always had the idea that the cantina girl at the beginning of Goldfinger was a prostitute. The realistic Bond, his lack of direct action in this movie is also a bit of realism.

I am among those that think it is overrated. I believe that "Iconic" doesn‘t necessarily "Good". Up to the laser scene, it is one of my favourite movies of the franchise. But after that, Bond being a prisoner for all this time lets it down a lot for me… The film gets really boring for me there…
