The Strange Yelling on a SUBLIME Album Solved - MYSTERIOUS MUSIC Special

  • Sublime, a popular band from the 1990s, had an unlikely mystery floating throughout their second album ROBBIN' THE HOOD. Three tracks contain the rambling and yelling of a man named Raleigh Theodore Sakers. The things he'd say ranged from humorous to troubling, but always entertaining; and these tracks fascinated listeners for 27 years. Aside from his name, however, not much else was known about him, until now…

    I met Sublime DJ Miguel Happoldt in an alley in Arcata, California in 1995. They were in town playing a show with The Wesley Willis Fiasco and Lordz of Brooklyn. I asked him how they found Rollie - he said they bought a used 4-track (or some amount of tracks, I can’t recall) and there was a tape of Rollie in it. He said they found him by accident.

    I grew up in Long Beach with the guys from Sublime. In high school they played at parties damn near every weekend, hell they even played in my back yard for my birthday party. Great guys, all with incredible senses of humor.
    I can tell you that That Raleigh tape was legendary at Wilson High back in the mid and late 80's.
    Bradley, Eric or Bud no doubt got the Raleigh tape from a dude named Greg, who started spreading it around Hill Jr. High in 1983. That's when I first heard it.

    I'm so glad to find this. I grew up on Sublime and in my adulthood I've moved on to other music, but lately I've rekindled my love-affair with the band. I was listening to Robbin' The Hood a fee nights ago and I got very curious about Rollie, understanding that now days we have the internet and wanted to unlock some of the mystery. I found the uncut 30 minute version and I was blown away. The man is obviously insane, but some of what he says makes a certain kind of sense. He has obviously been twisted and completely fucked by resentment. So much so it seems to have made him crazy, but there is a kind of brilliance about him at the same time. I'm a classically trained actor and have also been away from that in my adult years and also wish you rekindle my love-affair with performance and Rollie makes an excellent character study and I know I could make it extremely interesting, so I've done a lot of searching to find what I can about him. I never thought this was fake or acted out. He is too crazy to not be real. It's too genuine for a bunch of strung out beach bums to have forged. This video confirms that I believe he was definitely real and the recordings are authentic.
    Thanks again! Please share more if you ever find aanything. I'd love to know all that I can about him for the character study.

We all have a story. You just told part of his. Kinda sad though to know that he started out as an obvious creative person but ended up in the loony bin for whatever reason.

    This was very informative. I've trolled a few people with Raleigh's rants before. There's something that's not only authentic but absolutely genius about how he expressed himself. One time quite recently I left a copy of his rant in a trolls inbox on twitter and watched as he told all his friends I was schizophrenic. Then he tried telling me I was insane and brought it up, so I linked the song and laughed. He then tried to claim that he knew exactly who Sublime was, so of course I responded 'Then you must have known where the quote was from and just lied about me being insane, right?'
    He didn't like looking stupid in front of his friends at all. Good times. Psycho-semantic police indeed.

    Raleigh is also featured on an album released by the band after Brad’s passing called “ bums lie “

    • @SmokeyMcPotProductions
      @SmokeyMcPotProductions 5 місяців тому +2

      Ehhh, if we’re getting technical, it’s not actually released by the band. It’s a bootleg album released on “OPM” Records (official Sublime releases always on their own Skunk Records and Gasoline Alley / MCA Records) in the late 90s, when you could order these bootleg albums from a catalogue in the back of most rock magazines (Hit Parader, Cream, etc) for $29.99 each.
      This was long before the laws for music piracy got super strict (the whole Napster thing didn’t happen for another 7 or 8 years later) and CD burners were not commercially available yet.
      “bumS Lie” is a collection of rare versions, radio interviews, and unreleased tracks (at the time, most… if not all of these tracks are now available on the box set “Everything Under The Sun”) with some of the Raleigh quotes sprinkled in at the intros and outros of some songs. This bootleg came out before the all-Raleigh CD “Psycho Semantic Blockage”, mentioned in the video, was released on the Skunk website, so a lot of these Raleigh quotes contained on this “bumS Lie” bootleg were completely new to us fans.
      Sorry about the rant…

      @@SmokeyMcPotProductions I picked the cd up from Bionic a few years after Brad’s passing and the word around town was , the band released it , as a bootleg so the record company wouldn’t take the proceeds, that they were using to go towards Jacob. I was never sure how true that was , but that was the buzz

    • @SmokeyMcPotProductions
      @SmokeyMcPotProductions 5 місяців тому +3

      @@jamesshepard4743 hmm that’s interesting… Ive never heard that. To be fair though, certain record stores would sell these bootlegs, typically the independent ones, and not chains like Wherehouse Music or Tower Records. I remember going into a small record store in Hollywood CA in the late 90s and saw all these Sublime CDs Id never heard of… Dog Gone Blues, The Black Album, War On The Blvd, Living In A Boring Nation, Lou Dog Went To The Moon… I was like WTF are these. But I mean, what you’re saying could totally be true, the band was known for their DIY Sublime products… maybe some of the other bootlegs were for the same cause too.
      Do you still have your copy? And I’m curious, do you remember how much you paid for it..? Was it a normal CD price or was it a weirdly jacked up price of like $30?

    Please tell me about his days in Milwaukee bro and how this recordings were release via Very Mean Recordings pre-RTH. Do tell bro. Nice science fiction story though. Information that you have is from what Dale, Swear Jar, JD, and myself discovered. Also there is tons of information about Rollie that out there. But to say the fact that few know almost ALL the tape is is 32 mins long was used by sublime and unwritten law and other skunk releases and some independent LB bands over the years. Also the og tape used to make the transfer was master by Greg O'dell of the Fallin' Idol and came from a second gen dub from Eric Willson of sublime whom got it a party and dub over a black flag tape. The og source call from Madison WI and Very Mean Man Recordings in 1993 which had an association with Butch Vig whom produced the Nirvana release. Butch Vig was friends with Brad Conyers of the Ziggens and the tape got in the hand of Kelly Vegas whom gave it Matt Vargas when All Day LB did a party which Eric attended.. The Butch Vig connection can be shed light on due to Chris N former of Nirvana playing in a band with Bud and Miguel called Volcano. Rollie moved to Milkaukee in the late 1980's and recorded there and had post trauma treatment there. He went back to Calli like in the late 1990's due he had family there and died there in the early 2000's. And all your information is correct to our resources. Thanks to One Jack Move and Swear Jar.

      Sadly, not a whole lot of news on Rollie's original song or his art. Still keeping an eye on it, and will hope to retrieve something eventually. Unfortunately, Rollie's brother still hasn't gotten back to me; I hope not, but it's possible he passed away and the email I found is inactive. He'd be in his mid/late 80s, and I think it's crossing a line to call him out of the blue. Hopefully someone from the Saker family finds out we're interested in knowing more about their family member, and that gives them a willingness to share with us. However, I feel like if I dug any deeper than I already have, I'd be disrespecting someone's privacy.
