Life in the Lilly white suburban wonderland is an asylum. People convincing themselves they’re better off. That they’re happy. All the while dying a miserable life.
People were admitted to asylums for the most absurd reasons sometimes. "Female Hysteria" for example is such a joke. For this character it could be depression, smart people are very likely to suffer from it. Also electro shocks were also a method of healing depression, actually they were used for everything. But also they were used on trauma patients, to forget about things. In 2nd world countries in Europe people of sexual abuse were treated for the longest with electro shock therapy.

Too late, they've got Leto for that, and he already was Zod. I think if DC would've given him more to work with, Zod would've been a truly great villain. I felt that Shannon himself was good, but that Zod was underdeveloped.

Somehow they get a sense of what is truly going on… brilliantly played out by Shannon. Also the film “99 Homes”

Nocturnal Animals was 2016, so it was announced in March of 2017. I agree that his performance in that film was fantastic, but Mahershala Ali gave a much more deserving performance that year, resulting in his win. And this is coming from a diehard Michael Shannon fan; I've been waiting for him to win for ages now, but his time will definitely come.

Kathy Bates does a really good job in this film but I don’t know if her character is unlikable or not like I could see it both ways.

Honestly, this film teaches me the importance of not to be selfish. Anyone else noticed her friend from across the road? 5 kids, depressed, and her husband didn't even love her, he was in love with April instead, she always felt like shit, and yet she was selfless. April would have been better off that way. At least that woman tried to be pleasant, despite her crap situation, and I have so much respect for that.
Both April and Frank are selfish, and John simply pointed it out.
Frank is a coward and its so obvious even the crazy man saw it.
