People were admitted to asylums for the most absurd reasons sometimes. "Female Hysteria" for example is such a joke. For this character it could be depression, smart people are very likely to suffer from it. Also electro shocks were also a method of healing depression, actually they were used for everything. But also they were used on trauma patients, to forget about things. In 2nd world countries in Europe people of sexual abuse were treated for the longest with electro shock therapy.

Yes, I get it. Michael Sheen’s character represents the raw, uncut truth presented through someone dismissed by society as insane. BUT I wish another man _would_ disrespect my wife and me like that - especially in *our* own home!
His mom (Kathy Bates) wouldn’t have been able to hold me back from chin checking that jerk. “Not well, my a**,” indeed. 🥊

Nocturnal Animals was 2016, so it was announced in March of 2017. I agree that his performance in that film was fantastic, but Mahershala Ali gave a much more deserving performance that year, resulting in his win. And this is coming from a diehard Michael Shannon fan; I've been waiting for him to win for ages now, but his time will definitely come.

Honestly, this film teaches me the importance of not to be selfish. Anyone else noticed her friend from across the road? 5 kids, depressed, and her husband didn't even love her, he was in love with April instead, she always felt like shit, and yet she was selfless. April would have been better off that way. At least that woman tried to be pleasant, despite her crap situation, and I have so much respect for that.
