@9:00 microbiologist here. I would gues, that dish washing liquid works great on gram positive bacteria - which have a thick peptoglycan (fatty layer). Gram negative bacteria on the other hand. I am allergic to peanuts and I use Dawn dish soap. I have never had an allergic reaction to it.....and didn't ever hear about it containing peanut oil until your video. 😮 Who would have thought we'd have to check that?! Also, I was eating at Chick-fil-A, then saw on the receipt that they cook everything in peanut oil. I never had a reaction to that and did further research and found out that "peanut oil" doesn't have the thing that causes peanut allergies in it. But if I get near peanut butter, or food with peanuts. It's a pretty bad day.
That is good to hear. I also don’t like using products from a company that isn’t being upfront about it. I am glad you haven’t had any bad reactions from it.
Dawn Powerwash is just Dawn with isopropyl alcohol and water in a continuous sprayer or mister bottle. I make the dupe recipe and it’s exactly the same. It’s a real game changer and would love to see results. Maybe you could make the dupe but sub in Palmolive in place of the dawn? You’ll be hooked on it even if it doesn’t kill all bacteria because it’s so great at getting out stains and stuck on messes. 2 cups of water 2 tablespoons dish soap 2 tablespoons 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol.

It would be a good idea to try just scrubing those same areas only with sponge, no detergent or anything else. I bet the bacteria would decrease even just from that. Scrubing and wiping off also has an effect. Experts always emphasize that scrubbing is very important while washing your hands, even more important than detergent or soap. There is a difference in the rinsing off between the kitchen and the bathroom and that is a flow or spray of fresh water that is able rinse the area as well as the product off the test site with a continuous flow of fresh water. I think the results would balance out if the bathroom was sprayed in the same manner
I use real world situations in my testing.. that is what is realistic for cleaning my house. I am not trying to replicate exact lab settings where every variable is the same.
Have you found one cleaner that can do it all? Because that would be awesome... I used to use vodka as a disinfecting spray around the house. Literally took the cap off and screwed on a new spray nozzle and started spraying and wiping down everything. Great videos 👍
Hello! I have not found a cleaner that does it all yet. I find that some work better in the kitchen, some better in the bathroom, some better for soap scum etc. Each time I test something I learn a bit more about what works well! Interesting thought about the vodka, I will add that to the viewer suggestion list! Thanks for watching!
I think there is soil build up around the bathroom sink where it meets the underside of the counter. I saw it (light brown fluid) run down the left side of the sink when water was splashed up there.. Could this have messed up your result? Thanks for your petri-dish trials. So interesting. Thanks
That is a possibility. I do run my tests in duplicate or triplicate on different sinks off camera to confirm results. I have to look back into archive data to check. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hello from Delta, BC Canada (near Vancouver) I heard a few months back about LA Totally Awesome spray and I have been able to get some from the Dollar Tree in my area. It claims to be a degreaser and I know it works great to get rid of cigarette smoke off glass (I have smokers who smoke on an glass enclosed balcony) I would love to know if it works for removing bacteria in the home as well. You should be able to pick up a spray bottle of it at your local Dollar Tree store for like 2 bucks or so. If you can I would be so interested in your results.
How do you explain the huge differences between the kitchen and bathroom results? Is it because of different types of bacteria in those places? Do you know?
Yes I will get to more of those.. so far I have reviewed the Pink Stuff Paste Trying out THE PINK STUFF Around My Home- Does it work? ua-cam.com/video/ExmdcptiqfE/v-deo.html And I am testing the Toilet Bowl Cleaner probably in September!
Considering the fact that toilets when they flush they spray if you don't close the lid when you're flushing and then you have your sink right there next to the toilet connected via the same drainage pipes it would seem that the pressure from the flush in the toilet is forcing fecal bacteria to blow out the sink. So I challenge you to do this test again but every time you flush the toilet please make sure to close the lid and then close the drain in the sink before you flush. Then repeat this test in the bathroom
Hello! I will be working on Palmolive and Vineger 50/50 mix soon (I just created a community post about it!). I like your idea of testing non-antibacterial products also! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Me too, so doing the Palmolive test was good base because it is not antibacterial and I think it did really well. I will at some point conduct testing for antibacterial dish soap too. Thanks for watching!
Its interesting the bathroom sink is worse than the kitchen. I feel like kitchen sinks get used a lot more. Though, less spitting into the sink, and irs probably porcelin, not stainlesss steel
It really is interesting to see that in some times in my home more bacteria is in the bathroom and others the kitchen. I think the real world testing helps us see how various products work in different environments! Thanks for watching!
I am in the United States of America. To my knowledge there is no specific federal law that requires manufacturers of cleaning products to disclose all ingredients on the product label. There are some regulations that mandate certain labeling requirements to inform consumers about potential hazards and safe use of the products. But they do not necessarily require a full disclosure of all ingredients. California has the California Cleaning Product Right to Know Act, which requires manufacturers of certain cleaning products to disclose a list of intentionally added ingredients on their websites. Usually I can find most ingredients on the labels or on the websites.
Hello! So I get mine from a laboratory supply company. I would caution anyone who wants to do it at home without a background in biology, because you could purchase the type of agar that grows pathogenic bacteria and get sick or mishandle the plates etc. I do have a Master's in Biology, I have worked in labs, I taught college level microbiology lab, I have worked with HIV etc. However, I think amazon has little kid science fair kits which should have agar that wouldn't grow pathogens, but you would have to reach out to the manufacturer and check on that. I love your enthusiasm because to me, all of these tests and results are super exciting and I can see that you have that same excitement! Thanks for watching!
It might be beneficial to add another section of the dish that represents cleaning part of the area with only water and a sponge. I'm not sure how you'd be able to gauge the effectiveness of the detergent without that comparison. It's possible that wiping the area with a sponge and water is removing a significant portion of the bacteria.
Great point. I can consider dividing the plate into quarters if I feel I can separate the cleaning also to make sure the cleaner I am testing isn’t getting on the “water” test surface or doing a separate sponge and water test. From the year of testing I have been doing, I do think that mechanical removal of bacteria is possible, but in those cases, they don’t remove everything. I have a video on Norwex cleaning cloths that use only water to clean, you can see that just the mechanical scrubbing with a cloth and water does remove bacteria but not a 99.9% at all. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I think in this video I spoke about why I haven't tested Dawn Dish soap.. basically I read that there is peanut oil in there soap and they will not confirm or deny it.. so I cannot use it in my home. Thanks for watching!
Test Dawn in your garage or a friend's house 🏡🏠 Regular Dawn vs Antibacterial Dawn Orange Scent vs Platinum Spray Dawn ?????? Please 🙏??? Pretty Pleaseeeeee ??
Great question! Different areas in the home have different types of bacteria. Consider kitchen sink could have raw meat or chicken. Consider a bathroom sink had mouth bacteria. So it is possible that a product can remove one type of bacteria better than another type. If you look at a product label on a product that states it can sanitize or disinfect, they will usually have the type of bacteria that they remove. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
Okay, I'm the toilet. What I noticed inside the rim there that you for the before you cleaned you, you won't rubbed on the inside of the rim. And then when you did the after you rubbed on the top of the rim, so you went in 2 different places, I thought you did them in the same places for each thing.
There are different types of bacteria in different places. So the kitchen bacteria is most likely from meats and food, while the bathroom sink probably mouth, and toilet.. well the toilet! So if you look at disinfectant bottles, some will have the types of bacteria that they can eliminate. Some do well at kitchen bacteria, some toilet etc. Palmolive is just a soap, not a disinfectant or sanitizer so in this case it happened to do better with kitchen bacteria.
So according to the EPA a "disinfectant is a chemical agent used to kill or inactivate harmful microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, on surfaces." So under that, soap is not a chemical that does that, so it is not a disinfectant. Thanks for watching!
Well no, not all of it is a disinfectant. Some of it is just like removing grease, you know, and a disinfectant might not necessarily remove grease. So it's not true that all of them disinfect or have antibacterial properties in them. You have to buy it specifically with that stated on the packaging.

Then repeat this test in the bathroom
That is on my list of things to test for sure!!!
I use water with a little dish soap in it to do general cleaning. I wonder if diluting the dish soap so much reduces its efficiency?
Not sure! I haven't tested that yet!
INSTANT SUB i’ve needed this channel for forever! thank you for existing 🫶
Thank you so very much!!! 😊 I appreciate your kind words and support!
Hey can you do a dawn dish soap and other things that are not anti bacterial like maybe windex or bar soap.
Hello! I will be working on Palmolive and Vineger 50/50 mix soon (I just created a community post about it!). I like your idea of testing non-antibacterial products also! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I've been looking for studies similar to what your doing investing that branch and I can't find nothing so you would be the first
Ive always been curious about if the antibacterial dish soaps are really doing anything.
So in that country you are in it is not mandatory legally to write the components to any product?
I am in the United States of America. To my knowledge there is no specific federal law that requires manufacturers of cleaning products to disclose all ingredients on the product label. There are some regulations that mandate certain labeling requirements to inform consumers about potential hazards and safe use of the products. But they do not necessarily require a full disclosure of all ingredients. California has the California Cleaning Product Right to Know Act, which requires manufacturers of certain cleaning products to disclose a list of intentionally added ingredients on their websites. Usually I can find most ingredients on the labels or on the websites.
@@FieldOfFocus Oh I see. Here in Italy it is obligatory to write all the chemical components to any product
I make my own cleaner dish soap, peroxide, bleach, water and drops of tea tree oil or your choice of essential oil. Please test it.
Will add to my viewer suggestion list!
Bleach is nasty. I never mix it with anything and only use with lots of fresh air supply.
I think possible surfactants actually needs a little while to work 100% effectively.
That might be a possibility. I feel the dish soap did a great job! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Heh whats the name of this methodology? What you were using to grow this bacteria?
Microbiology. I use agar petri dishes and sterile swabs. Thanks for watching!
Where can I buy Petri dishes like this and swabs? Is there a bacteria testing kit? What is this called? 🤯
What about Dawn dish soap?
I think in this video I spoke about why I haven't tested Dawn Dish soap.. basically I read that there is peanut oil in there soap and they will not confirm or deny it.. so I cannot use it in my home. Thanks for watching!
Test Dawn in your garage or a friend's house 🏡🏠
Regular Dawn vs Antibacterial Dawn Orange Scent vs Platinum Spray Dawn ??????
Please 🙏???
Pretty Pleaseeeeee ??
It is on my list but I won't test it until they can confirm no peanut oil... Sorry!!
What if you mixed the dish soap with bleach for the bathroom
I haven't tested Bleach and Soap mixed together so I don't know! I will add it to my viewer suggestion list!
Does anyone know why it works better on the kitchen sink than the bathroom sink?
Great question! Different areas in the home have different types of bacteria. Consider kitchen sink could have raw meat or chicken. Consider a bathroom sink had mouth bacteria. So it is possible that a product can remove one type of bacteria better than another type. If you look at a product label on a product that states it can sanitize or disinfect, they will usually have the type of bacteria that they remove. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
@@FieldOfFocus interesting. Thank you for the response
Why on earth would anyone put peanut products in anything unnecessarily??
It is very frustrating! I don't get it either.
Okay, I'm the toilet. What I noticed inside the rim there that you for the before you cleaned you, you won't rubbed on the inside of the rim. And then when you did the after you rubbed on the top of the rim, so you went in 2 different places, I thought you did them in the same places for each thing.
I will have to rewatch.. I do multiple tests and multiple video recordings, I might have mis matched them.
why would it do so much better in the kitchen than the bathroom ??
There are different types of bacteria in different places. So the kitchen bacteria is most likely from meats and food, while the bathroom sink probably mouth, and toilet.. well the toilet! So if you look at disinfectant bottles, some will have the types of bacteria that they can eliminate. Some do well at kitchen bacteria, some toilet etc. Palmolive is just a soap, not a disinfectant or sanitizer so in this case it happened to do better with kitchen bacteria.
do baking soda
I will add that to my viewer suggestion list! Thanks!
I thought all soap was a disinfectant
So according to the EPA a "disinfectant is a chemical agent used to kill or inactivate harmful microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, on surfaces." So under that, soap is not a chemical that does that, so it is not a disinfectant. Thanks for watching!
Well no, not all of it is a disinfectant. Some of it is just like removing grease, you know, and a disinfectant might not necessarily remove grease. So it's not true that all of them disinfect or have antibacterial properties in them. You have to buy it specifically with that stated on the packaging.
Can it be possibly applied to all dishsoap brands?
I would say it's possible, but not definite, as different brands have different formulas.
I agree with Pusheen Cat... possible.. but each brand has their own formula. I can test out some different brands too. Thanks for watching!
Oh girl....wear gloves when cleaning that toilet....
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
