I had gotten one of the Santa Fe 2-8-0s brand new way back in 1992. It lasted a few months. Before one of the gears broke into. I had the same thing happen to a Santa Fe 2-10-4 from Bachmann for a Christmas gift back in 1992 as well.
yeah, bachmann during the late 80's and most of the 90's were all well too known for these issues. Which is why I am treating this 2-8-0 with outmost care.
@cjfauxx6266 that's good because I have that engine its gear I think is broken because while I run it makes a grinding sound and is jolting forward instead of running smoothly and it barely moves sure it could need oiling but the wheels turn quite a bit while I push it forward and backwards and I feel something moving inside
My first go locomotive was this right here! Mine was the collectors edition (even though it’s not collectible) mines also a rare exception to the reliability issue.
Thank you for sharing!! How did you acquire these because I've been searching for this particular steam loco that came out in 1976. I like to have one again. Help me please, thank you again
I found this model on ebay last year for around 40 dollars. It's in mint condition with the smoke unit still working. Most of these models are plagued split gears and axle connectors due to poor quality. I am extra cautious with this model due to this, but I have had no issues arise with mine.
@@cjfauxx6266 nice! I have one that, as I said, I bought in 1976 (way before you're born I guess) and it's still running. I want to have one for nostalgic reasons. ..want to sell it?🤣🤣
I was able to acquire one of these at a model train show however when I got it home one of the wheel connecting rods had rattled apart. I did find the micro sized piece that joined the two rods ( have you seen the size of one of these ? ) which measured probably 2mm X 1mm. My problem is how on earth do I re-join the two rods. Even with a magnifying glass it is almost impossible to see what I am doing let alone fix it and, the other rods are so flimsy I fear I will damage them if I force the issue. Any ideas or maybe a tutorial on how to fix these things. I am sure I am not the only person to have run into this issue. Any advice gratefully received otherwise it will end up as a very expensive paper weight or in the bin.
Well, that is the main problem with these old bachmanns... the plastic quality is just terrible. Mainly the gears or the axle connectors go out on these but I am unsure of what you mean by the connecting rods. Do you mean that the metal drive rods (the moving parts) broke?
Yes. The pin that joins two rods has come out and is defying all attempts at being put back in. To be honest I defy anyone to be able to re-fit the pin. If I could put up a photo it shows exactly what the problem is. I have a couple of ideas but they will be very dodgy and may work which would make a purist scream in horror.
A small rivet came out of two of the joined rods which I did find but was unable to be re-fitted. I ended up making one out of a pop rivet and after much hair pulling and naughty words was able to fix the issue. Now it has a cracked axle gear that needs replacing.
