Albeit I did have to replace the catalytic converter and do some restoration work cause it belonged to a smoker, but she's looking sharp in forest green! Best $5k I've ever spent

My Dad had a Tacoma for what felt like forever, but he got a very reliable 400k miles out of it. He hated it for the last year that he had it, but he definitely got him moneys worth out of that truck.
Great informative review. However, you are missing the Ford Ranger and Mazda B series pickups from 1998+. They are bullet proof and have a loyal fan base. These trucks come in at the $5000 mark for a good condition model.

I just bought a 98 Tacoma for 4900 (dealer) just a month ago with only 130k miles. Theres plenty around if your patient and willing to travel to your states big cities. Also bought a previous 98 Tacoma a year earlier with 140k miles for 4600 via craigslist.
The one last year was a 98 Tacoma 3.4 v6 TRD 4x4 Xtracab 140k miles. Its in good condition outside of a small dent near the rear of the truck. Was a great deal via craiglist. The one I just got a month ago was a 98 Tacoma 2.4 liter SR5 xtracab with 130k miles. Honestly payed more then I wanted on it because it was from a dealer, but its condition is impeccable having only one owner that kept it in a garage and wasn't used for heavy work. Both trucks no rust issues being from Texas/Florida. Both run awesome incredibly reliable. Haha actually drove the 2.4 liter Tacoma 1000 miles from Orlando Florida to Texas the moment I bought it after vacationing at Disney World without a issue. Always wanted a 3.4 for off roading and heavy towing (instead of using my 4runners), and a 2.4 liter for just driving the day2day with its better mpg.
EXTREMELY honest review, the Toyota 3.4 liter V6 is rock solid if reasonably maintained. Re-sale value means everything. Price values, check what commonly is presented at auctions, if it is commonly cheap it is probably crap. I subscribed because you don't lie!
Thanks for another informative video. I own a 2003 Tacoma with the 2.4, 4 cyl. engine. It has 205,000 miles on it and shows no signs of wearing out. Still runs great with just regular maintenance (brakes, shocks, oil, filters, and wax of course).
I found for my mother a '99 Toyota Tacoma with a 3.4 V6 automatic with 150,000 for $4,300 ten days ago. That truck runs and drives great. Transmission shifts smoothly. I am impressed for the age of the truck. As others have mentioned, they are not easy to find for under $5,000 with miles less than 200,000. We were fortunate to find the one my mother owns now. Great videos.

I can say the toyota tacoma's are tough. I have a friend that dogs the crap out of one. Takes it trail riding (sometimes trail jumping) and it runs just fine. Its crazy what you can put those things through.
I own a 03 Nissan Frontier 2.4L. I've put 150,000 miles on her. Oil/tires/brakes are the only things I've had to replace and those are just consumables so... Yes, it's underpowered if you plan to go fast or tow a bunch. I've towed over 1,200 lbs without a problem. It's slow to accelerate but I am fine with that.

Nice video I own a super black 2004 Nissan frontier 3.3L crew cab I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!! No problems at all with 266,249 miles on it and runs like a dream never selling it it can tow 5,000 all day helped a buddy tow his 1989 Lincoln town car and had washers n dryers and a fridge in tow bed badass truck ill try and get a vid out soon
Thanks so much bro, you have no idea how much help your videos are. I have a 2005 GMC Sierra and it's been reliable ever since I gotten it, other than the water pump going bad from owning it in 7 years, that's been the only major repair that it's needed aside from regular maintenance.
I had a 1991 Nissan and 2004 4-cyl, 5-speed manual. In general, both worked fine. 1991 was getting 25MPG with old fashion gasoline and got 22MPG with gas+10% alcohol. 2004 got 25MPG. Later got a 2007 Frontier V6, AT and fully loaded with power window/door, etc. Very powerful engine but only getting 16.5MPG. It ran fine for a few years and had a number of issues in the last 3.5 years. Failed: Fuel sending unit, radiator leaked (US made) and driver side power window. The PW did not cost me any money but 6 hours. I clean the motor brush.
I drove several service trucks with that engine over a LOT of years. Reliable as the sun rising. We got rid of them only when the body was so whacked up they were an embarrassment to be seen in. Which in a service vehicle tended to be around 300,000 miles. But the engine and trans were still capable of doubling that mileage.
Not surprised about the turn of the millennium Tacoma being #1 on this list. Many of the Toyota brand vehicles were so solidly built (the Echo being among the most underrated sub-compacts, reliable as a tank) that their respective pre-owned values are well above other makes of the same time period of production. Too bad that Toyota Inc. could not maintain the standard of quality after 2006 when so many of their products went to the crap category, most notably the 2007 Camry.
I have a 2003 toyota Tacoma truck it has the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine and 5 speed manual transmission and it is a great truck! I got it from a previous owner which they put new tires on it and ball joints and an alignment done and it has 178k on the mileage, i only payed $2500 and cant hear no lifters or knocking or crankshaft wat so ever and its just the best vehicle i ever had!
There's a 2007 Tundra 4.7 V8 that hit ONE MILLION miles in 2014.... Toyota bought it back from the owner to do a full tear-down. Averaged 125,000 miles per year!
@rocknroller1999 I rarely ever see a T100 on the road, but I don't think that many of those trucks were manufactured. It was Toyota's first attempt at a full-size pickup, although it was closer to a mid-size, like the Tacoma. It was replaced by the Tundra 20 years ago.
My 97 Toyota T100 3.4 was full of furniture junk, a Harley Sportster and a 600cc Honda motorcycles in the bed and towing a Center Console Whaler w/ outboard on a trailer and ran at highway speeds for 7 hours. Did not burn, leak or clunk at all. In 2005 it suffered through 4 hurricanes in KW Florida and got wet up to the seats. (I lost the ECU only.) I washed the cab floor in diluted diesel oil and still drive it every day approaching 300,000 on synthetic oil. Before that I had a Toyota Pick up with the legendary 22RE engine same thing Mobil 1 oil and filters and brutal snowy winters in 4 wheel drive on the highways for hours. you give great detailed advice. I try to tell folks who dont do a real good job at maintaining their vehicles to avoid a timing belt motor. Things I like to look for are the manual stick shift, and 4 wheel disc brakes (for easy of pad replacement) and usually ABS. If you want MPG vs hauling go with a 4 cylinder (usually cheaper to fix also) Looking into a car history and issues may make you feel like there are no good cars out there but it will help limit big issues that cost big bucks. ( car complaints site is like this) Thanks for this video I am looking for a good SUV to replace a Ford Explorer and still haul some stuff and people. Low price and low mileage in good condition I call it the "impossible deal" I just need to be patient.
1987 to 1996 F 150 with a fuel injected straight 6. Even those awesome Toyota motors have nothing on the durability of the 4.9. The big brown delivery trucks used to run those things to 500,000 pretty routinely
was never in doubt that the taco would be #1 but to find one in ok condition for under 5K with under 200K on the clock is wishful thinking. the craziest one i saw was a red 94 Toyota PickUp with over *400K miles* listed for $2k in Texas. it was sold 2 weeks later for $4K at action
I have a 2004 Nissan Frontier SV - 4cyl 4x2 112k miles on the ODO - that I bought in 2012 as a "dump hauler" (running stuff to the dump, yard hauler, etc.) That was 6 years ago. Today (2018) it is my primary vehicle! We just rolled over 165k miles - good gas mileage, small enough to take into the city, large and comfortable enough for an annual road trip or two. A few years back, we drove from RI to Yellowstone and back. Last year, we did a road trip though the Florida everglades. The truck is a trouper! Sure, at 165k miles, we have had to do some mechanical repairs to it (brakes, shocks, exhaust, etc.), but all things that you would expect to need repaired. For me to tackle smaller repairs, all I've needed was a Philips Head screw driver and a decent socket set. Nothing special. Interesting... I've owned Fords, see a lot of newer Chevy's on the roads, and when I look closely, I see body and frame rot. The Frontier has none. Had it up on a lift, went under the truck with a ball peen hammer - the frame is solid. Under the hood, you have a distributor and spark plug wires, not a sealed computer hatch. Just love this truck! Looking forward to rolling the ODO past 200k.
!997 T100 is the best vehicle I have ever owned. 6 Florida Hurricanes and Hurricane Wilma drowned her up to the dash board. I flush it out with part diesel and fresh water to remove the sea water and replaced the ECU in the kick panel, Opened the rear end and emptied out the salt water (after 5 years) and 14 years later it runs like a swiss watch. Couldn't sell it if I wanted to.
The 1998-2004 Frontiers with the 2.4-liter Frontiers were very reliable and more than adequately powered. The problem I encountered was that the timing chain tensioner wore out near 300,000 miles.
For the money, the 90’s Chevy trucks are very solid trucks. We have owned several of them over the years. We have a 94 K1500 with a 5.7l engine and 5 speed manual that has 225k, a 98 K2500 with the 6.5l diesel and 5 speed manual with 186k, and a 89 K2500. 5.7l w/ 4 speed manual with 189k, and all of them just keep on running and running and haven’t had any issues since we’ve owned them.
My 2002 F150 4.6 2v running strong and I expect to go another 10 years. Engines on all here are so much better to work on versus today’s engines. Agree on Tacoma. I see 20+ year Tacoma’s running around about everyday.
I agree for 1# . I was at a auction two months ago , and seen 89 go for 1500 bucks with faded paint and a little rust , but the engine was quiet as a mouse .
I Bought my 1990 "square body" Chevy Suburban R1500 (2wd) for $1300 three years ago. I drive it hard & put on a couple thousand miles every month. It's currently at 355,700 miles. I do most of my own work and it's super economical on maintenance & repairs. I've probably spent about $1000 on Maintenance since 2015. That includes the Radiator, a tune up, brakes all around, fuel pump & filters, two used batteries & alternator. These old Chevrolet trucks never die.
You only missed the 300 i6 fords, the 7.3 fords, the first gen cummins trucks, and the commanche with the 4.0... all capable of over half million miles.
The I.6 4.0 In the old Xjs are bullet proof. Miss my old Jeep. Trans died at 300,000 and I stupidly gave up on it. Bought a GMC, engine let me down couldn't find a decent Chevy so got a Dodge, Now I'm learning the true bullshit of Chrysler. The Rams are good but the transmission is total crap.
Towed for 20 years with a 98 ram and then it was used for a daily and was wore out and the rear end went out couple times but the transmission was strong. Uncle drove it through high school and beat the crap out of it
On the Toyota 4runner (96-02) does anyone have this issue? When going up an incline it down shifts and feels like the tranny has a slight vibration at high revs?. I know all vehicle's downshift going up hills.
I have an ‘03 Silverado SWB with the 4.3, and while I do wish it had more power, it has been extremely reliable. 178k original miles/original engine/original transmission. Very happy with it. Manual adjust bench seat, manual windows...love it. Here in Texas it’s pretty hard to find a good clean short bed, full size truck for a reasonable price.
I'm calling into question the towing capacity. I have a 2003 Ford F-150, with the 4.2 v6 stick shift, and towed a tractor up a mountain on a tandem axle trailer. Total weight 7200 lbs. I've towed a Fiat Spider on a full tandem wheel trailer thousands of miles. Total weight 5500 lbs. up and down mountains. the truck has 235,000 miles on the clock, with no signs of wear other than the drivers seat.
1999 was the first year of the " New Silverado" 1500 series, prior generation 88-98 were referred too as C/K's not Silverado's.. Silverado was a package on the C/k as was the Cheyenne. 2001 and on the complete line 1500-3500 where referred to as all Silverado's. Other than cosmetics there is little difference between the 88-98. 1995 got a face lift with modernized dash but thats about it. Enjoy your vids Thanks..
Toyota Tacoma...Omg, the first models are freakin 23 years old and they have price tags as high as some 2010 cars...Ridiculous if you ask me. Either look really hard for one or ask yourself if you think such an old car will still have enough life left to make it worth spending that much. I personally like Tacomas and I would seriously convince my dad to trade in his old Chevy for one but the ridiculous resale value makes it so questionable.
The high resale value speaks for itself. People want a good car that will last a long time and never break down. The answer to that can only be the Tacoma.
Doesn't change the fact that it's still a 20 year old truck. That means all the parts and articulates are 20 years old. I wouldn't trust a soul out there who thinks a 20 year old metal body will last as long as a new one. The car gets old, the metal gets old, and the whole car just breaks down one after another. Doesn't matter if it's a Tacoma or not. There's a certain point in time when a car or truck just gets too old to serve its purpose unless said car was meticulously kept all its life but who the hell would do that to a Tacoma that was built for the sole purpose of being used? Not a lot I bet. 10 years from now, most of the first gen Tacomas would probably end up scrapped or recycled due to too much wear. Just like how 20 years from now, anyone who's over 90 years old will be long dead. The high resale value is solely built on hype, making it seem like it's worth the price but I honestly think it's not.

400k on my dads 96' 1500. Not a single issue. As long as you treat it like the truck it is not whatbyoy want it to be and keep up with regular maintenance, they are great trucks.
2001 1500 4x4 quad ram garbage 5.2 liter V8. I had one trans fail at 106K, heater core started leaking at 96k & transfer case on the floor was banging in 4 wd. I replaced trans, heater core. Thank God I had an extended warranty 10 years or 100k. Traded for 5k got a new 09 Tacoma double cab 4x4 still driving today at 160K no problems.
most reliable truck for your money is definitely a 92-96 ford f150 with an inline 6 engine. these trucks have been seen to last 600k plus miles with just basic maitenence
Really, Fords from 81 to 96 with the 300I6 and the 4 spd manual is bullet proof, also really surprised he didnt mention the ranger with the 4.0L pretty bullet proof truck
br ly the vbelt 300s weren't that reliable for daily driving. Very out of date. Maybe good for logging or a farm. The m5od trans also leaked from the fill plugs and would seize if unnoticed. The late model f250+ zf5 was a lot better and could tow
I dont know where you heard that about the 300I6 Vbelt trucks, but I drive one everyday, Vbelt has nothing to do with reliability, as long as tensioned properly, also v belts are very easy to change if one blows. Apart from fuel injection the Vbelt and Serpentine engines were basically the same. The m5od(Mazda trans) did leak if the owner didnt do their maintenance, but they were in later model 300's (after Fuel Injection), mine being an 85' has a NP435, which are bullet proof and actually sought after, they also came with BW T-18's back then. As far as reliability goes these engines were used in water pumps, dump trucks, buses, tractors, combines, you name it, and would run at 3000rpm for days without being powered down.

I didn't think anybody was as close to me in years of wrenching. I started in the summer of 38' at the age of 13. I no longer am able to work on them as I am approaching 99 in 3 months.
The most reliable old truck I owned was a 1956 Dodge pickup. It had a flat head 6 cylinder engine that just would not stall! Drove it from Eugene, Oregon to Tucson, Arizona and back. Over mountains, across desert, back and forth. That was a long trip! Was back in 1971 so the truck was 15 years old.
I've had 2 S10s-- looking at a 3rd one now--- The 4.3 is as reliable as you can get, but I've replaced virtually everything else over the years... 262,000 miles on my current S10 which is now very tired!!!!!! Old trans vibrates my rearview mirror now...
I had a 1998 nisssn frontier 2004 I sold it to my father in law with 187,000 miles ran like new he drove for a few year had 290 k miles when he rolled the Nissan still ran like new only changed water pump once nothing else ever changed beside spark plugs that Nissan was a tank when he rolled the truck the insurances said because of miles they totaled it and the cab was smashed but the rack on the back saved my father in law
I wouldn't consider any Chrysler products reliable... but I am no professional just from my experience. However in my personal experience again, Toyota products have been VERY reliable!
I owned a 1992 Dodge 150 w/ a 5 speed manual and it was incredibly reliable. I once used it to move 700 miles and I was pulling one of those heavy Uhaul car haulers with a Mustang SVO on it that was packed full of my stuff and to top it off I had my Ninja ZX7 in the bed of the truck. Thing pulled up hills doing 75 without breaking a sweat. Had it not have gotten stolen from me in Scottsdale Az. I would have still had it to this day.

Those videos are only about USA cars and trucks. In the Netherlands nobody drivers trucks or something like that. Almost every car on the road is a small four banger and cars are a lot cheaper and better maintained. We have a lot of MOT rules and every car on the road has to pass that MOT inspection. I really want to see what a banger is in America, because for that money ($5000), you can buy a gorgeous car that is better than a old, bad maintained truck.

I had a 97 GMC Sierra 1500. It was a v6, regular cab, long bed 2wd truck. I bought it with 20k miles. And I did service the trans per the manual but the trans went out at like 97k and I ended up selling it. I liked the truck but it always had issues. Idk if it was lot rot because I bought it in like 2010 with 20k miles. But it seemed like every 3-6 months I needed to have it towed to a shop for a repair.
I think it depends if it has slop in it or not. Have a 2002 S10 ZR2 that jumped timing with only 165,000 miles on it. But it was used for towing and hauling almost all its life. And then i had a 99 chevy S10 blazer no towing or hauling. I traded it in running with 240,000 miles with just a rear axle and water pump replaced.
Dealership said I would never have to change the timing chain on my Subaru. I heard they can stretch but unless that happens I don’t plan on changing mine.
Avoid the 5.4 Triton like the plague. If they werent maintained anally, you're going to have top end oiling issues. They blow exhaust manifold gaskets when they get old, and the bolts are tiny. They tend to break off. You're going to be working on it in some capacity ALL THE TIME. For whatever reason, the cats on those trucks have a tendency to fail as well. If you're going to buy ANYTHING GM from the 90s, check the brake lines. If they look rotten and you aren't prepared to replace them completely, stay away. Many were recalled, so it usually isn't an issue, but definitely something to keep in mind. Those Nissans (apart from being useless as a truck in any sort of capacity unless you get the supercharged V6 for way more than $5000) have a chronic problem where the trans cooler which is internal to the radiator tends to contaminate the trans with coolant, and the coolant with trans fluid. It cooks the trans if you aren't careful.

Thanks for another informative video. I own a 2003 Tacoma with the 2.4, 4 cyl. engine. It has 205,000 miles on it and shows no signs of wearing out. Still runs great with just regular maintenance (brakes, shocks, oil, filters, and wax of course).
I found for my mother a '99 Toyota Tacoma with a 3.4 V6 automatic with 150,000 for $4,300 ten days ago. That truck runs and drives great. Transmission shifts smoothly. I am impressed for the age of the truck. As others have mentioned, they are not easy to find for under $5,000 with miles less than 200,000. We were fortunate to find the one my mother owns now. Great videos.

I can say the toyota tacoma's are tough. I have a friend that dogs the crap out of one. Takes it trail riding (sometimes trail jumping) and it runs just fine. Its crazy what you can put those things through.
I own a 03 Nissan Frontier 2.4L. I've put 150,000 miles on her. Oil/tires/brakes are the only things I've had to replace and those are just consumables so... Yes, it's underpowered if you plan to go fast or tow a bunch. I've towed over 1,200 lbs without a problem. It's slow to accelerate but I am fine with that.

I had a 1991 Nissan and 2004 4-cyl, 5-speed manual. In general, both worked fine. 1991 was getting 25MPG with old fashion gasoline and got 22MPG with gas+10% alcohol. 2004 got 25MPG. Later got a 2007 Frontier V6, AT and fully loaded with power window/door, etc. Very powerful engine but only getting 16.5MPG. It ran fine for a few years and had a number of issues in the last 3.5 years. Failed: Fuel sending unit, radiator leaked (US made) and driver side power window. The PW did not cost me any money but 6 hours. I clean the motor brush.

I drove several service trucks with that engine over a LOT of years. Reliable as the sun rising. We got rid of them only when the body was so whacked up they were an embarrassment to be seen in. Which in a service vehicle tended to be around 300,000 miles. But the engine and trans were still capable of doubling that mileage.

Not surprised about the turn of the millennium Tacoma being #1 on this list. Many of the Toyota brand vehicles were so solidly built (the Echo being among the most underrated sub-compacts, reliable as a tank) that their respective pre-owned values are well above other makes of the same time period of production. Too bad that Toyota Inc. could not maintain the standard of quality after 2006 when so many of their products went to the crap category, most notably the 2007 Camry.
The Nissan Frontier comes with a 3.3 supercharged option which moves those horsepower figures up quite significantly. It’s 210whp and around 235 lbft
I have a 2003 toyota Tacoma truck it has the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine and 5 speed manual transmission and it is a great truck! I got it from a previous owner which they put new tires on it and ball joints and an alignment done and it has 178k on the mileage, i only payed $2500 and cant hear no lifters or knocking or crankshaft wat so ever and its just the best vehicle i ever had!

There's a 2007 Tundra 4.7 V8 that hit ONE MILLION miles in 2014.... Toyota bought it back from the owner to do a full tear-down. Averaged 125,000 miles per year!
@rocknroller1999 I rarely ever see a T100 on the road, but I don't think that many of those trucks were manufactured. It was Toyota's first attempt at a full-size pickup, although it was closer to a mid-size, like the Tacoma. It was replaced by the Tundra 20 years ago.
My 97 Toyota T100 3.4 was full of furniture junk, a Harley Sportster and a 600cc Honda motorcycles in the bed and towing a Center Console Whaler w/ outboard on a trailer and ran at highway speeds for 7 hours. Did not burn, leak or clunk at all. In 2005 it suffered through 4 hurricanes in KW Florida and got wet up to the seats. (I lost the ECU only.) I washed the cab floor in diluted diesel oil and still drive it every day approaching 300,000 on synthetic oil. Before that I had a Toyota Pick up with the legendary 22RE engine same thing Mobil 1 oil and filters and brutal snowy winters in 4 wheel drive on the highways for hours.

you give great detailed advice. I try to tell folks who dont do a real good job at maintaining their vehicles to avoid a timing belt motor. Things I like to look for are the manual stick shift, and 4 wheel disc brakes (for easy of pad replacement) and usually ABS. If you want MPG vs hauling go with a 4 cylinder (usually cheaper to fix also) Looking into a car history and issues may make you feel like there are no good cars out there but it will help limit big issues that cost big bucks. ( car complaints site is like this) Thanks for this video I am looking for a good SUV to replace a Ford Explorer and still haul some stuff and people. Low price and low mileage in good condition I call it the "impossible deal" I just need to be patient.

1987 to 1996 F 150 with a fuel injected straight 6. Even those awesome Toyota motors have nothing on the durability of the 4.9. The big brown delivery trucks used to run those things to 500,000 pretty routinely
was never in doubt that the taco would be #1 but to find one in ok condition for under 5K with under 200K on the clock is wishful thinking. the craziest one i saw was a red 94 Toyota PickUp with over *400K miles* listed for $2k in Texas. it was sold 2 weeks later for $4K at action

I have a 2004 Nissan Frontier SV - 4cyl 4x2 112k miles on the ODO - that I bought in 2012 as a "dump hauler" (running stuff to the dump, yard hauler, etc.) That was 6 years ago. Today (2018) it is my primary vehicle! We just rolled over 165k miles - good gas mileage, small enough to take into the city, large and comfortable enough for an annual road trip or two. A few years back, we drove from RI to Yellowstone and back. Last year, we did a road trip though the Florida everglades. The truck is a trouper! Sure, at 165k miles, we have had to do some mechanical repairs to it (brakes, shocks, exhaust, etc.), but all things that you would expect to need repaired. For me to tackle smaller repairs, all I've needed was a Philips Head screw driver and a decent socket set. Nothing special. Interesting... I've owned Fords, see a lot of newer Chevy's on the roads, and when I look closely, I see body and frame rot. The Frontier has none. Had it up on a lift, went under the truck with a ball peen hammer - the frame is solid. Under the hood, you have a distributor and spark plug wires, not a sealed computer hatch. Just love this truck! Looking forward to rolling the ODO past 200k.

!997 T100 is the best vehicle I have ever owned. 6 Florida Hurricanes and Hurricane Wilma drowned her up to the dash board. I flush it out with part diesel and fresh water to remove the sea water and replaced the ECU in the kick panel, Opened the rear end and emptied out the salt water (after 5 years) and 14 years later it runs like a swiss watch. Couldn't sell it if I wanted to.

The 1998-2004 Frontiers with the 2.4-liter Frontiers were very reliable and more than adequately powered. The problem I encountered was that the timing chain tensioner wore out near 300,000 miles.

For the money, the 90’s Chevy trucks are very solid trucks. We have owned several of them over the years. We have a 94 K1500 with a 5.7l engine and 5 speed manual that has 225k, a 98 K2500 with the 6.5l diesel and 5 speed manual with 186k, and a 89 K2500. 5.7l w/ 4 speed manual with 189k, and all of them just keep on running and running and haven’t had any issues since we’ve owned them.
I've heard a lot about the 97-03 F150 being really reliable same for the OBS Silverados of the same years.
My 2002 F150 4.6 2v running strong and I expect to go another 10 years. Engines on all here are so much better to work on versus today’s engines. Agree on Tacoma. I see 20+ year Tacoma’s running around about everyday.

I Bought my 1990 "square body" Chevy Suburban R1500 (2wd) for $1300 three years ago. I drive it hard & put on a couple thousand miles every month. It's currently at 355,700 miles. I do most of my own work and it's super economical on maintenance & repairs. I've probably spent about $1000 on Maintenance since 2015. That includes the Radiator, a tune up, brakes all around, fuel pump & filters, two used batteries & alternator. These old Chevrolet trucks never die.
You only missed the 300 i6 fords, the 7.3 fords, the first gen cummins trucks, and the commanche with the 4.0... all capable of over half million miles.
The I.6 4.0 In the old Xjs are bullet proof. Miss my old Jeep. Trans died at 300,000 and I stupidly gave up on it. Bought a GMC, engine let me down couldn't find a decent Chevy so got a Dodge, Now I'm learning the true bullshit of Chrysler. The Rams are good but the transmission is total crap.

Towed for 20 years with a 98 ram and then it was used for a daily and was wore out and the rear end went out couple times but the transmission was strong. Uncle drove it through high school and beat the crap out of it

Might be a loose throttle cable . I adjusted my Tacoma and it helps
I always found my 02 4runner to be very sensitive (throttle) wise.
On the Toyota 4runner (96-02) does anyone have this issue? When going up an incline it down shifts and feels like the tranny has a slight vibration at high revs?. I know all vehicle's downshift going up hills.
I have an ‘03 Silverado SWB with the 4.3, and while I do wish it had more power, it has been extremely reliable. 178k original miles/original engine/original transmission. Very happy with it. Manual adjust bench seat, manual windows...love it.
Here in Texas it’s pretty hard to find a good clean short bed, full size truck for a reasonable price.

I'm calling into question the towing capacity. I have a 2003 Ford F-150, with the 4.2 v6 stick shift, and towed a tractor up a mountain on a tandem axle trailer. Total weight 7200 lbs.
I've towed a Fiat Spider on a full tandem wheel trailer thousands of miles. Total weight 5500 lbs. up and down mountains.

1999 was the first year of the " New Silverado" 1500 series, prior generation 88-98 were referred too as C/K's not Silverado's.. Silverado was a package on the C/k as was the Cheyenne. 2001 and on the complete line 1500-3500 where referred to as all Silverado's. Other than cosmetics there is little difference between the 88-98. 1995 got a face lift with modernized dash but thats about it. Enjoy your vids Thanks..

Toyota Tacoma...Omg, the first models are freakin 23 years old and they have price tags as high as some 2010 cars...Ridiculous if you ask me. Either look really hard for one or ask yourself if you think such an old car will still have enough life left to make it worth spending that much. I personally like Tacomas and I would seriously convince my dad to trade in his old Chevy for one but the ridiculous resale value makes it so questionable.
The high resale value speaks for itself. People want a good car that will last a long time and never break down. The answer to that can only be the Tacoma.
Doesn't change the fact that it's still a 20 year old truck. That means all the parts and articulates are 20 years old. I wouldn't trust a soul out there who thinks a 20 year old metal body will last as long as a new one. The car gets old, the metal gets old, and the whole car just breaks down one after another. Doesn't matter if it's a Tacoma or not. There's a certain point in time when a car or truck just gets too old to serve its purpose unless said car was meticulously kept all its life but who the hell would do that to a Tacoma that was built for the sole purpose of being used? Not a lot I bet. 10 years from now, most of the first gen Tacomas would probably end up scrapped or recycled due to too much wear. Just like how 20 years from now, anyone who's over 90 years old will be long dead. The high resale value is solely built on hype, making it seem like it's worth the price but I honestly think it's not.

400k on my dads 96' 1500. Not a single issue. As long as you treat it like the truck it is not whatbyoy want it to be and keep up with regular maintenance, they are great trucks.

2001 1500 4x4 quad ram garbage 5.2 liter V8. I had one trans fail at 106K, heater core started leaking at 96k & transfer case on the floor was banging in 4 wd. I replaced trans, heater core. Thank God I had an extended warranty 10 years or 100k. Traded for 5k got a new 09 Tacoma double cab 4x4 still driving today at 160K no problems.
most reliable truck for your money is definitely a 92-96 ford f150 with an inline 6 engine. these trucks have been seen to last 600k plus miles with just basic maitenence

br ly the vbelt 300s weren't that reliable for daily driving. Very out of date. Maybe good for logging or a farm. The m5od trans also leaked from the fill plugs and would seize if unnoticed. The late model f250+ zf5 was a lot better and could tow

I dont know where you heard that about the 300I6 Vbelt trucks, but I drive one everyday, Vbelt has nothing to do with reliability, as long as tensioned properly, also v belts are very easy to change if one blows. Apart from fuel injection the Vbelt and Serpentine engines were basically the same. The m5od(Mazda trans) did leak if the owner didnt do their maintenance, but they were in later model 300's (after Fuel Injection), mine being an 85' has a NP435, which are bullet proof and actually sought after, they also came with BW T-18's back then. As far as reliability goes these engines were used in water pumps, dump trucks, buses, tractors, combines, you name it, and would run at 3000rpm for days without being powered down.

I didn't think anybody was as close to me in years of wrenching. I started in the summer of 38' at the age of 13. I no longer am able to work on them as I am approaching 99 in 3 months.

The 88-95 model chevy and gmc 1500-3500 are workhorses. Even with the v6 4.3L I have pulled 2,000 pounds and it never winced. Hard workers, I love'em.
I towed a 3000lb bass boat with my 03 frontier 4 banger. It pulled it fine, I just went slow on steep hills and didn’t push it to hard.

The most reliable old truck I owned was a 1956 Dodge pickup. It had a flat head 6 cylinder engine that just would not stall! Drove it from Eugene, Oregon to Tucson, Arizona and back. Over mountains, across desert, back and forth. That was a long trip! Was back in 1971 so the truck was 15 years old.
Shoot, no it was older than '56. I just googled it and mine had the engine hood that opened from the side. So it was older than 1956 for sure.

I had a 1998 nisssn frontier 2004 I sold it to my father in law with 187,000 miles ran like new he drove for a few year had 290 k miles when he rolled the Nissan still ran like new only changed water pump once nothing else ever changed beside spark plugs that Nissan was a tank when he rolled the truck the insurances said because of miles they totaled it and the cab was smashed but the rack on the back saved my father in law

I wouldn't consider any Chrysler products reliable... but I am no professional just from my experience. However in my personal experience again, Toyota products have been VERY reliable!
I owned a 1992 Dodge 150 w/ a 5 speed manual and it was incredibly reliable. I once used it to move 700 miles and I was pulling one of those heavy Uhaul car haulers with a Mustang SVO on it that was packed full of my stuff and to top it off I had my Ninja ZX7 in the bed of the truck. Thing pulled up hills doing 75 without breaking a sweat. Had it not have gotten stolen from me in Scottsdale Az. I would have still had it to this day.

Those videos are only about USA cars and trucks. In the Netherlands nobody drivers trucks or something like that. Almost every car on the road is a small four banger and cars are a lot cheaper and better maintained. We have a lot of MOT rules and every car on the road has to pass that MOT inspection. I really want to see what a banger is in America, because for that money ($5000), you can buy a gorgeous car that is better than a old, bad maintained truck.

I had a 97 GMC Sierra 1500. It was a v6, regular cab, long bed 2wd truck. I bought it with 20k miles. And I did service the trans per the manual but the trans went out at like 97k and I ended up selling it. I liked the truck but it always had issues. Idk if it was lot rot because I bought it in like 2010 with 20k miles. But it seemed like every 3-6 months I needed to have it towed to a shop for a repair.

It doesn't need to be changed at maintenance intervals like a belt. Only when it shows signs of wear or slack. I think that's what he means.
I think it depends if it has slop in it or not. Have a 2002 S10 ZR2 that jumped timing with only 165,000 miles on it. But it was used for towing and hauling almost all its life. And then i had a 99 chevy S10 blazer no towing or hauling. I traded it in running with 240,000 miles with just a rear axle and water pump replaced.
If you keep up on oil changes they generally last a long long time, it seems Chevy has oiling problems with their timing chains.
Dealership said I would never have to change the timing chain on my Subaru. I heard they can stretch but unless that happens I don’t plan on changing mine.
Change the oil and it won't need to be replaced. A lot of times the tensioner goes bad but not the actual chain

Follow the owners manual and don't drive like a Lunatic (try to stay below 3500 RPM)
Avoid the 5.4 Triton like the plague. If they werent maintained anally, you're going to have top end oiling issues. They blow exhaust manifold gaskets when they get old, and the bolts are tiny. They tend to break off. You're going to be working on it in some capacity ALL THE TIME. For whatever reason, the cats on those trucks have a tendency to fail as well.
If you're going to buy ANYTHING GM from the 90s, check the brake lines. If they look rotten and you aren't prepared to replace them completely, stay away. Many were recalled, so it usually isn't an issue, but definitely something to keep in mind.
Those Nissans (apart from being useless as a truck in any sort of capacity unless you get the supercharged V6 for way more than $5000) have a chronic problem where the trans cooler which is internal to the radiator tends to contaminate the trans with coolant, and the coolant with trans fluid. It cooks the trans if you aren't careful.
