I actually experienced the Yesterday effect in real life. When I was much younger, and Quantum Leap was still airing, there is an episode where Sam goes back in time and ends up with his family, and in trying to keep his brother from going to Vietnam, and keep his sister from ending up with an abusive husband, tries to prove to his sister that he's from the future.
So in order to do so, he ends up talking a little about the Beatles, but can't bring himself to tell his sister that John dies, and instead says "John goes on to make my favorite song." And he begins to play Imagine.
At first his sister is transfixed and amused and smiling. But as the song goes on, the camera just stays on her (and brilliant acting from a 10? year old actress) and as it goes on she starts to realize the song is too good, too polished and practiced, that it IS a John Lennon song she's never heard. That it IS a song from the future. And she starts shaking as the song goes on, and then breaks down crying because she realizes all the bad things Sam has been warning her about are true.
And even 32 years later, Scott Bakula performing the song is forever be ingrained to me as the first version of the song I ever heard, just like his sister. Even though the song was 20 years old even then, I was young enough that I just had not heard it before, and I got the exact same experience as the character in the show, and that's maybe why the memory has stuck so strongly with me. The Beatle song you've never heard before.

First off, calling Uwe Boll's movies "mediocre" would be a VAST improvement.
Second off, I had the "John Carter Effect" happen when I watched "Casablanca". I remember thinking it was cliché, but it actually created most of the tropes that are now common.
Third off...Winnie from "The Wonder Years"! A first crush for many young men who grew up in the 80's, including myself. Danica McKellar still does Hallmark movies, but she's still Winnie to me!

I think the original version of the Yesterday script could have worked far better if it focused on that original problem of the guy knowing objectively he has gold and trying to succeed with it to the detriment of those around him. Listening to this I imagined a scene where he's basically at the end of his rope trying to break in with the Beatles's music and has a love interest basically asking him if it's not enough that she and their friends and family all enjoy the music before he finally "comes to his senses" so to speak and decides to just give it up. Maybe the story could end on a somewhat happy note where one of the 4 other people who remember the Beatles is a music studio executive who doesn't have the talent to recreate the music. The executive knows the music won't take off like it did before but maybe just gives the guy a chance to record albums of it anyway so the music has the opportunity to exist in the world again. The story could end on a bit of an unhappy but hopeful note where the protagonist doesn't get the success he wanted but his friends and family all love the music anyway and it gets to exist in the world again, if not at the same level of popularity as it did before.

I had to look up Jake Shimabukuro to see what Brandon was talking about, and now I know Dan is wrong in two ways:
    1) It was that good
    2) George Harrison loved the uke. He would buy them in batches to give away. He would break them out at parties. He left them at other people's houses because, " you never knew when you would need one." So he would definitely approve.

In honor of their tangents to tangents I paused this several times to do things like watch the Ukulele Weeps and the Pop-Korn mashup. They are amazing! I don't know if the Ukulele Weeps is 'better' than the original, but it certainly joins the pantheon of great covers. (I also love the Kubo sitar version)
The new melody for Coming Undone with the Never (Ever) riff is brilliant.

The Chosen is one of the better depictions of Biblical history in my opinion. I can appreciate that the show creators expanded on the characters and show the humanity of these people. YO this feels absolutely surreal, listening to you guys talking about mashups. It's funny because that's something I've been idly making on the side myself. Granted mine are just weird, esoteric nonsense because of this balance of "doing the funny" and "actually legitimate grooves" that I try to cultivate with it.
Things that would make 2022 an even more incredible year for me than it already is: getting two awesome, established authors to listen to meme humor.
    We live in a society.
The idea for a Trance Hawaiian genre sounds exactly like something I could put together, if I weren't trying to use all my spare time to better myself as a writer, finish my first book ever, and hopefully become a published author in the near-ish future so I can have 'being creative' as a full-time job. It genuinely sucks not having enough hours in the week to accomplish all of my goals while also allowing myself a healthy work-life balance. But I feel that creative fire in me and I genuinely hope I'm on the best path possible.

That trope doesn't work for me.
By the end of Seinfeld, I realized that the whole series had been an exercise in watching for jerks be jerks to each other and everyone else around them, and the harm they did along the way.
Thus, Seinfeld ISN'T funny, so it can't be unfunny.

There is a movie "Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel" that is kind of similar to that horrible story idea. It focuses on localized time problems caused by the time traveler arriving more than the hows and whys of what they are doing, though.

Basically everyone in my Senior High School class married someone from that class. At our recent 20 year reunion, we discovered that all but 10 of the married people were married to people from our class, 4 married someone from a class older or younger.
Of the literal 120+ couples from my Sr class, only 2 were couples in highschool, and one of those got together at the end of our senior year, the other couple had been together since like 7th grade.

Bastille has the best mash up - a cover of Cant Stop by Miley Cyrus, arranged so the bridge of the song is Achey Brakey Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus. The lyric “only god can judge us” is changed to “only dad can judge us” and on top of all that, the intro to the song is the intro to Lose Yourself by Eminem

regarding dan's comment about hearing a song in a mashup first, i tend to do that with acapella music. I'll hear a song the first time as an acapella cover, and usually end up preferring the cover, especially when its a medley or mashup of some kind

33:10 I searched for multiple versions of ukulele 'while my guitar gently weeps' and while not as good as the original piece (imo) almost all of them were pretty dang good and beautiful in their own way. Split between Dan and Bran on this matter.

The Zorro effect is the opposite. The Zorro effect is where a story is retold but altered each time. The net effect of this is the protagonist becomes diminished by making his opponents more bafoonish and less belligerent with each retelling. Zorro starts as an amazing swordsman putting his life on the line for others. And moves to the much lower stakes of an average man dealing with idiots.

When I watched Yesterday I came away feeling that the thesis of the film was that great art is important but that the fame that comes when you create great art is not important (not bad necessarily, just not important).
But I think they got a little lost/distracted from their themes at times. I seem to recall a throw away line in the film where it is revealed people have forgotten about cigarettes. Why was this important to the story? The fact that this made past the various edits a film invariably goes through seems to lend a certain credence to Dan's statement about the film not knowing what it is trying to say or where it is trying to go.

There were two books/series that i loved the movie ruined. John Carter, disappointed me, but i did not hate it, and Battlefield earth. One of my fav Sci fi books, and the only time in my life I left a movie theater angry. I would love to see both have someone take another try and make something good.

The thing that drove me nuts about John Carter, was it just couldn't pick a lane. It either needed to be a fun family adventure, or an adult violent adventure (which would have made it different from Star Wars). The Barsoom books are pretty sexy and violent, they aren't kids books, the contrast with the genteel southern gentleman is pretty stark to the barbarity and alien extremity of Mars in the story (though you have to parse the delivery of the language a bit to really get the total effect, it was written a very long time ago). The film had this edgy backstory for Carter, but then made the rest of it sort of generic and tame. They either needed to go full kids show (not my preference) or basically game of thrones but with a noble hero as the lead. If a series adapted for modern audiences was going to be skewed more adult and given darker themes and textures, the one with all the naked space conflict and slavery is probably it.
Yesterday is a lovely but toothless film. There was originally a love triangle, with a wonderful scene, but even that was too much conflict for that film. It needed to have something it really wanted to say, but it was just kind of there being sweet. It's fine, but not great. I like Dan's version, but I also think him inspiring the Beetles to get out there and play would've been interesting. Like their art inspires him to go out and inspire them.

With all the content everywhere these days, I think all of us are quick to judge what we want to watch. I initially did not think this podcast would interest me that much, but caught myself really looking forward to an episode this week. Haha I know its a kinda weird praise, but I'm trying to say I've come to really love these discussions so keep it up :-)
Years ago I watched a video essay on vimeo called "The Unloved - John Carter" by Scout Tafoya, that video never really left me since I was quite a fan of the film when it came out, would have loved to see what the sequel would have looked like. Your thoughts on the topic really made me reminisce.
