As Brandon was talking about his favorite phones I thought, “He’s gonna be one of those foldy phone guys.” And then he was.
Spoiler alert! 😁
Is that the academic term?
32:34 I always love when Adam chimes in for a little quip. It allows me to believe this is actually a three-person podcast, but one of them is really, really shy.
As a person named Ben, Brandon's outros have always felt weird, like they were directed at me, but this last one felt like a call to action specifically to me to rob Dan's fridge
SAME
Learned a new word - monopsony - from this episode!! This is a great reason to continue watching the show
There is totally a book with watermelon magic. It's "In Watermelon Sugar" by Richard Brautigan where the sun rises a different color each day of the week and the properties of the watermelon change depending on the color of the sun.
in support of melon magic, urizane of s-cry-ed can transform melons (watermelons being his favorite) into weapons, armor, etc
Thats an awesome setting idea!
Finding out that Brandon uses a Fold brings such joy. I would totally by one if they didn't cost two arms, a kidney and half a leg.
Same. Maybe in the future I'll get one eventually
A note about ads on smart TVs: You can avoid them completely by not agreeing to the terms & conditions when first setting up the TV (or after doing a factory reset), which automatically makes it a dumb TV. Then you buy a media stick or box such as an Amazon Fire TV stick and access all your streaming services through that.
Personally, I think someone should just put an adless smart TV on the market and I believe that would be enough to get the rest of the manufacturers to at least make adless models. They'd have to make the ad-laden sets a lot cheaper if this were the case because who's going to willingly buy that kind of TV when there are TVs that don't serve you ads in your own home against your will.
or just set up a pi-hole network wide ad blocker and look at what requests the t.v. makes for ads and blacklist those. Takes like 30 minutes to set up if you have a raspberry Pi.
I'll admit that I wouldn't trust that to work always. It may block you from doing things, but companies have shown that they are willing to take your info no matter what.
I never noticed ads on my smart TV, except for the home screen where it puts popular shows. But once I go into one of the streaming services to watch something I don't see anything.
I think the Amazon Fire TV stick has ads.
Hearing them talk about ads is very funny when literally every ad I get currently is for the stormlight mini kickstarter
Brandon's love of 'foldy' phones is a joy to see. I hope its a form factor that sticks around.
They’ll be featured in Mistborn Era 4
I love the idea of a foldy phone.
My budget is less enthusiastic about the idea.
RE: The "Amazon Is Mapping Your House" fear:
If Amazon wanted to get the layout of your house, they'd look it up on the County Assessor's website, along with every other public document you've ever filed that is publicly available. It isn't really that hard.
Adam, the man who tells Brandon and Dan who directors are, but not what they QWERTY keys are 😂
Brando Sando here treating phones like the Magic System they are.
It's interesting that you started talking about alternate universes and then introduced a version of the "forty cakes" meme from an alternate universe
housekeeping, eating, listening to this, reading stormlight and watching andor at the same time is officially too much
Can you make a shirt for your Food Hiest News? 🥺 Maybe made up newspaper clippings that can be made into a poster with outrageous food heists headlines? 🤣 That would be awesome.
Dan and I are kindred spirits.....no mercy for ads
I’m definitely in favor of adopting monumentus. Another one I use is imprised- impressed and surprised. For example, “I’m imprised with the quality of the paper you submitted given you waited until the night before to begin the assignment.”
A sentiment I wish we had a word for is when something is too new to share. You’ll eventually be willing to share it, but only after its “newness” has warn off. This feeling may usually be associated with toddlers, but if we’re honest with ourselves, adults feel the same way about big purchases like cars or even fleeting things such as a freshly poured beer. You might be willing to let someone try the beer, but only after you’ve tried it first.
Without an obvious amalgam of existing words, I made up the word deflecated to capture that feeling. For example, “Sorry, I’m not letting anyone drive my new car yet, it’s deflecated”.
I love that as successful as brandon is his phone is 3 years old! We dont need to be so disposable with our tech
The biggest issue with location data mining is how often companies give that stuff to the police without any resistance. Police regularly abuse that information. This is particularly noticeable with camera doorbells. Without any real justification, police can without your knowledge look at cameras you've set up for personal security, and they regularly do. Maybe not you specifically, but cops absolutely use this all the time
5:22 It's not exactly what you described, but I feel like this anime called The Tatami Galaxy is almost like this. Each episode follows the same college student joining a club at the beginning of their college life, but ends with some form of disaster, and time rewinds and in the next episode begins with a different choice. I really enjoyed it
I think it's based on a novel as well, but I haven't read it
The 57 Watermelons should be a retelling of The Adventure of the Six Napoleons. One of the guys hid a perfect gem in one of the watermelons and they were sold, so they had to sneak in and steal them back. And as for data and privacy, for years I utilized ad blocking to create a faulty data profile. (I work in information science, it's a fun thing to do.) I strategically blocked and kept ads to give myself hobbies I didn't have and to try to misinterpret my age, career, etc. At one point I was able to access Google's guess as to who I was and I had made myself at least twenty years older and given myself several hobbies that I really had no interest in. It was a treat.
If a really competent ghost in a cape stole a bunch of capers from Washington D.C., it would be *Casper's Capable Caped Capital Caper Caper.* I will not take questions at this time. Thank you.
That food heist is funny because that's where I lived before moving to Utah.
The dancing straw is mesmerizing.
Dan should read dark matter it is exactly like what he described!!!!
Years ago I was cleaning my pool & doing some yardwork & lost my flip phone. Two weeks later at dusk I went to turn out a faucet & saw something shining on the bottom of the pool. I scooped out the phone and answered the call!!! Two weeks under water & the phone was fine!
Fast forward to space era. Fold phones everywhere hahahah, love it can't wait!
Congratulations to Dan Wells for actually getting Brandon to stop signing papers, live on camera!
6:35 The food heist sounds like a math problem.
Monumentous? That is absitively posolutely a valid word.
Mr. Destiny!! I love that movie. Glad he missed that ball after all.
"When no one was looking, Lex Luthor took *forty* cakes. He took 40 cakes. That's as many as four tens. And that's terrible."
12:52 wow I was literally at India palace 2 weeks ago while visiting my sister it's pretty cool that that's the same place!
1:45 It sounded like they were describing The Midnight Library by Matt Haig.
> Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?
How many of those lives involve visiting that library?
You got to love Brandon multitasking with the signing 🤣🤣. Could only be even better if he were writing Storm light while talking
Another monumentous podcast!
There's a Lex Luthor fan MTG card that uses cake counters. This might be what happiness feels like.
Love Brandon nerding out over his folding phone. Wondering if these two gamers have a Steam Deck?
Today my dumbass learned "monumentous" isnt an actual word and I am mad
Monumentous occasions aren’t a thing?
Bro my disappointment is momumentous and my day is ruined
:O
😁😁😁 Nor stubad. But that doesn't stop me from using it.
I think I like monumomentus better though.
I had one of LG's dual screen phones for a while and really liked it. I didn't use the extra screen all the time, but it was nice to have, and being able to easily prop the phone up on a table was really nice as well.
I'd be tempted to get a folding screen phone, but the price needs to get well under $1k for me to seriously consider it.
Lex Luther stealing pies reminds me of the hilarious Superman Peanut Butter commercials
As a huge Nic Cage fan, yes, we exist, I just want to point out that you are mashing up two movies. The one where it is a modern take on It's a Wonderful Life was called: Family Man. The movie where he was a weatherman was cleverly titled, "The Weather Man". In theweatherman he just sort of goes through a mid-life crisis and confronts living in the shadow of his father. I think it was Michael Caine.
Oh, and it was directed by Brett Ratner whom if I recall, you're not the biggest fan of Dan lol. However, he did give us Rush Hour and so I'm going to say those cancel out what he did to the third X-Men lol.
The show Gravity Falls did have a book entitled "The Sibling Brothers in the Case of the Caper-Case Caper"
Monumentus would be a malfigor and I love those.
So a phone technician's view on folding phones. Mind you, I use one too.
Glass is bad enough for durability, thin plastic is worse. If you prep and get decent protection then you'll probably be fine, just don't expect to fix it if it breaks. You're looking at 60% replacement of everything in the device if even one of those screens break. That's over half the value of the device... new tech, new risks, higher prices. With all that said I love using my flip, Its compact and very versatile. This stuff will stick around if companies can get pricing to go below $800.
Long story short, go write more sci-fi with folding tech w/ cool uses and you might inspire people to adopt and make it.
Dan!
Get lipstick that is a shade that exactly matches your lip color! Never talk about it, tell no one, and have fantastic photos forever! :)
i AM constantly analyzing dan's face, i feel recognized
This food heist just makes me think that Dan needs to get Brandon and some others to play a game of Fiasco
People can remember different categories of things with different levels of ease. I can absolutely compare the ease with which I remember historical trivia and the difficulty with which I remember names and say I don’t really remember names. Though in my case I also have prosopagnosia, so that may also influence things compared to other people.
This episode is mo-mental
09:15 so it's an arms theft movie? I imagine two screw ups from an alternate demention find a portal of some kind to a watermelon patch, but also screw up and break a bunch of watermelons a mobster was smuggling and they have to get him his watermelons by a certain date.
the reason we don't have our phones on our arms is because we wouldn't able to use both hands
This videos are so nice
As for the roomba "casing the joint"... lots of modern places are on Zillow with that much detail already :-) The funkiest roomba attack I've seen is using the roomba as a mobile speaker and remotely triggering Alexa or Siri with it...
My two favourite phones are the same as Brandon, for the same reasons!
I don't have a fold yet, need to try it
2:30 Sounds exactly like the book ”Dark Matter”!
Are they aware there is a ad-free version of Hulu? Or are they lamenting that you can pay for something and still get ads?
"No one would watch that." Yes, yes they would. That's a 10/10 idea.
I am working through the podcast, buy you're almost there. Just one more to go!!!!!
You really left “Dandon’s Portmanteau Corner” on the table there!
New bucket list item: stealing Dan's capers.
The Les Luthor meme came from the Superhero Dictionary. First place I saw it years ago was from one of Linkaras Comic Book Quickies episodes, if not the first one. I think the word was fifty, hence the sentence going further into the five tens.
The Midnight Library is an alternate dimension-ish story, and amazingly life changing. You've just gotta get through the massively depressing first bit...😬😬
My account things this is a good show because of so many heists I’m guessing. All I get is ads for food delivery companies when I’m watching this
3:45 I thought they were talking about Meet the Robinsons at first, since that's the catalyst for the villains revenge. Perhaps that movie is more of a subversion of that trope? not exactly, but at least with the success example
Lex Luthor stole forty cakes, I'll have you know!
Oh, the Gallagher jokes I could. Oh, the many, many Gallagher jokes I could make.
A title for the novel about the watermelon thieves: "57 Shades of Watermelon"
Maybe it was one of those stories where the MC wants something big but can only obtain it through a series of increasingly elaborate trades. He wants a '57 Chevy but the guy will only accept a solid gold statue. So, the heroes go to the guy with the gold statue but he will only let it go for a one of a kind autographed guitar. It goes on down the line until they reach the point where they need exactly 57 watermelons to trade for a pet lizard.
moto droid 1 was the best. solid and had a slide out keyboard
for 2:12 -- I thought of Dark Matter by Blake Crouch!
If you want to invent a new word, don't let anybody stop you. People making up new words is how we get new words, it might not take off but if anything people should be trying it more.
Hulu's UI is fine. Amazon's UI is horrendous however. X-ray is pretty neat though.
Adam,
I just saw an ad on Spotify that they have audio books. I'm tempted to pull the plug on my Audible account so at least someone OTHER than amazon gets my book money. I'd be curious the guy's thoughts on spotify as a competitor to Amazon in the Ebook market.
Speedball reference. Heck yeah.
RIP to a good character. I still remember Robbie Baldwin juggle his parents marital problems and his own place in universe. He could have been bigger than Spider-Man. RIP
The movie is Mr. Destiny starring Jim Belushi
I feel I’m capable of a caper caper on the cape in a cape. It would be monumomentous!!
Twitter can totally add advertisement that DOES NOT show up in the same feed as what I'm on Twitter to read...
I've got a fold 3, it's easily my favorite phone I've ever had. I also open it far less than I think I would.
A movie in which J.K. Rowling writes Harry Potter, but with all the revisions she's tweeted over the years.
Sounds awful tbh
@@giovannitigalo7011 Exactly
I also love the z fold
The term “phablet” only went away because basically every modern smartphone is big enough to qualify as one.
Better still, you can find Kanye West in the dimension with Tolkien the Philologist and convince *Kanye* that he wrote The Lord of the Rings. If I'm dimension hopping, I'm definitely lying to somebody.
Get a phone with gorilla glass ... I use the same phone for three or four years, no phone cover at all, and at the end of that time, still no scratches or cracks. Then I give it to a friend when I get a new one, and they manage to shatter the screen within a week. But it works for me!
A Caper is clearly someone who makes capes. So there could be a caper-caper-caper.
The new Z Fold and Flip phones are even better than the first generation one you have, Brandon. I think you'd be amazed.
He has a z fold 2 I believe. The flash & camera setup is distinctive like on a note 20 series.
Would agree though, I run a flip 3 and ive had hands on regularly with fold 3/4 at work.
Re: Google Glass
I was so hyped for it as well. I would have dropped the 1~2k to get one. This was also the time when I first noticed my vision starting to go and I was like "what great timing!". Alas, it did not come to pass.
I'd watch it.
To further the caper, caper, caper theme could we not extend it an additional caper to designate a person from Cape Cod? Therefore it could be a caper, caper, caper by a Caper.🤣
We need a new and less frenchy word for portmanteau. I humbly propose wombo (word combo). Thank you for your time.
I just got the S22, now I kinda wish I'd saved up and got the Fold
I actually do not constantly analyze your face, Dan. I constantly analyze you and Brandon's tshirts. They're always interesting! 😅
1:19 Ouch, Brandon! Lol That sounded like a zinger that would pass between me and my friend. We're brutal. Haha
As someone who's gen z, it felt so weird when Dan referred to having data as living in the future. Smart phones are just a part of life for me. Like, non-smart phone cell phones are a novelty. Heck, they're not even being used when your phone breaks and you need one to tide you over. Idk lol. Ig it just made me feel very young lmao.
You are very young, but that’s not a bad thing. You’ll get the end of the cosmere earlier than us old people will.
@@Sam-vk8xd Wait a minute--- there's going to be an END to the cosmere?! 😵 lol
@@emeralddraegon the end is only the beginning is only the end is only the beginning
Foldy phones club!
Dan's straw is alive!
Oh man.. please tell me.. does someone know what the name of the super big phone he was talking about... Phablet...
What's the brand.. and model name???
you can do it Ben, i believe in you
Name for the alternate dimesion Kanye movie
“Journey into the Wild West”
Mr. Destiny. The movie with the baseball was Mr. Destiny.
Watermelons don't have a particularly long shelf life. That would have been difficult to offload
Doesn't hulu have an ad free level of subscription and a cheaper one with ads?
I had the Blackberry Pearl!
