If you notice at the end of the Turtles movie the humans faces start to look more normal as they accept and cheer for the Turtles. Before that they are unknown and scary since that it how Splinter has painted them as they grew up. As they start seeing them as just people instead of "monsters" they start to look more normal to them. That is why April looked normal since they felt comfortable around her the whole movie.
On the off chance this comment gets read by any of you guys I'd like to thank you for recommending Anne McCaffrey. I'd never heard about her until I heard you talk about her on this podcast. You've mentioned her a couple of times and following your "Best fantasy authors that have past away" episode I finally ordered Dragonflight. Got it in the mail yesterday and read half of it in one sitting. I've now got less than a third left to read and have ordered Dragonquest to keep going. It was a long time since I had a book I was so captured by from the get go.
Loves me some TMNT! I do have a few nerd notes: -I recently read through the first 11 issues (and 4 one-shots) of the original comic (the "golden era" whe. Eastman and Laird were working on it together). It isn't as grimdark as you remember. -The turtles first started getting different body shapes in the 2012 series. April was also first made a teenager there. Rise made them all even more distinct. -If you haven't seen Batman vs TMNT, you should. It is better than it has any business being. -The early issues of the IDW comic are also really good (I haven't read it recently). The thing I loved the most is that they changed the group dynamic for a bit. Usually it's Leo as the leader, Raph wants to be the leader, and Don and Mikey do their own thing. In IDW, Leo and Don have a "man of science, man of faith" rivalry while Mikey kind of helps ease Raph into the group after an extended absence. Good stuff. -IDW also gave us Old Hob, an anti-heroic mutant alley cat. He is awesome and should be in more TMNT media.
I was literally wanting to say the same thing. I love Dan and Brandon, but sometimes they don’t know as much about topics they love. But I’m a die hard TMNT fan and not perfect in my knowledge either.
I assume they’re just intentionally using proper Japanese pronunciation. There is no soft/lazy “ih” vowel sound the way us native English speakers all seem to pronounce it, only に/二 which is exactly how we’d say “knee” (or the Knights Who Say Ni!). But yeah, It’s such a common word in the west now, it sounds strange.

I just watched the tailer for the new ninja turtles movie since i didn't know it even existed, and the animation looks like animated claymation, very cool concept.
I remember a plot point in the tv-show/tv-show based series that splinter had a quest to reverse the change. He had an opportunity but (the machine or something?) would have needed to target the turtles too. So he would have become a man but the turtles would have turned back into regular turtles. So he sacrificed his opportunity to return to be a man for the turtles.
I have only been to 3 concerts. 1.Weird Al Yankovic Poodle Hat Tour in St. Louis 2. Play! A Video Game Symphony in Chicago 3. Tim Minchin in St. Louis.
Well all three of those sound awesome. Tim Minchin is funny and a talented musician, there's lots of good video game music out there, and I listened to Poodle Hat A LOT when it came out.
I did see a Foo Fighters concert from box seats. Complete with servers bringing me wine and cheese (also beer and wings, but that sounds less pretentious ).
Bad Story Idea: In a world where Heavy Metal and Hard rock music is the norm. A new artist comes to town and plays the most rowdy and crazy music... Classical Piano.
1. I need a fans debate that would be broadcasted on the channel, where they try to flip eachother over to their preferred food heist/ bad story idea. 2. I feel like the concert Brandon and Dan go to should be a K-pop concert! Can we make this happen?
Yeah, not a fan of that origin in the new movie. Though mimicking moves as a rat really isn't much better. Might as well mimic the moves from kung fu movies 😁 I've always prefered the 90s origin of Splinter being a human who got mutated. Also not a fan of the Leo and April parring. I also agreed with Dan that they are going to do something different with Shredder. There's no connection between him and Splinter anymore.
They're saying it correctly, its should be neen-ja given how japanese phonetics works. It just usually gets pronounced "nihn-juh" because english speakers just sort of look at the work apply a pronunciation that matches what they already know, including the original theme song. English and Japanese naturally emphasize different consonants so most people miss it if they don't know how Japanese works. Like when you watch an anime dub, and the name "Sakura" comes up, an english speaker will say "Suh-koo-ruh" because that's how it visually breaks to them. But the actual pronunciation should be closer to "Sock-rah" with the middle almost silent. (Or a name lke Satsuki an english dub will often go "Sat-Soo-Key" when it should be "Sahts-ki")
My problem with changing the backstory is that TMNT's story has two halves: the mutant half and the ninja half. To me, the mutant part is just the excuse to get the ball rolling. The ninja part... is the actual story. So if you cut the ninja part entirely, like this movie did, you don't really have an overarching story anymore. Plus, yeah, why even have Shredder now? The new backstory means he doesn't matter, he's just a scary henchman. Ultimately, all that means I can't say the movie is anything above "okay."
I actually liked that the new movie was doing something different, since I'm old enough, and a big enough turtle fan, to have been through all the previous iterations. Mirage, Archie, Image, Mirage again, Mirage again again, IDW, all the tv shows including the live action one and all the movies... Turtles vs. Shredder is so played out to me, I'm really interested in where they go with a version of the franchise where they're NOT hiding in the shadows and going to public school. Focusiong more on the utant and less on the ninja is a fresh take. There's some actual new material in there, rather than seeing them inevitably regurgitate the rooftop battle that knocks one of them through the skylight into a coma, the farm, Return to New York, City at War arcs that most of the iterations have felt obligated to do their version of.
Theres a comment about the food heist bear that he was smart because he didnt drink the 3 diet cans... Id just like to point out it was 6 twelve packs supposedly (maybe 6 packs?)... Bear definitely had plenty of diet soda.

This is exactly why I didn't enjoy _Across the Spider-Verse._ You can just *see* the retcons they're setting up, because there's no possible way to have a good resolution to the story they're preparing without going much further than simply "oh, turns out Miguel was wrong about this thing." We see way too many little things that demonstrate that Miguel was, in fact, right, but he can't be right and also create a satisfying ending given the thematic elements they're setting up. In the name of DRAMAZZ and establishing high, tense stakes, the authors wrote themselves into a corner, and I honestly don't see any way out that doesn't involve severe retcons or worse.
