Let me be the first to say...EXCELLENT VIDEO !!! Very soothing and MAN, somebody has some deep pockets out there. It's nice to see 425 as she reminds me a lot of ex / ex GTW 5629. Also, I know absolutely NOTHING about her linage, (former owners, builder, etc.) can somebody help me out with that?
Jim, 2102 is a class T-1, 4-8-4 Northern built by the Reading Railroad. The T-1's were rebuilds from Reading I-10 2-8-0's originally built by Baldwin in the early '20s. The Reading &Northern owner, Andy Muller Jr., purchased the 2102 back in the early '80s, if memory serves me correctly. The R&N has been working on it as time allowed since 2016. She was in working order when Mr. Muller purchased her.
Thanks so much, Jim! Really glad you enjoyed the video, as this was a really special outing for me. 425 is a 4-6-2 Light Pacific built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia in 1928 for the Gulf Mobile & Northern railroad. She later became Gulf Mobile & Ohio 580, and later Louisiana Eastern 4. She came back north as 425 again with Valley Forge Scenic, then Blue Mountain & Reading. I'm not sure the dates on those intermediate moves. She's really lovely though, and even though she's dwarfed by 2102 now, 425 will likely remain my sentimental favorite.
Really great video. Hated to see it end. It answered some of my questions about things I've noticed passing through on excursions and looking at other people's videos. It would be really nice if some day an employee could give a tour of 2102's cab and explain what all the controls do.
I would very much enjoy that too! I know the basics of how steam engines work, but I'd love to know more details. I can't identify much in the cab, and it would be great to know what everything does. I'll be having another visit to the steam shop later this month as part of a chartered excursion. I'm not sure if we'll get a more detailed cab tour, but I'm seriously hoping we do!
@@JamieMakin I only have a text book knowledge of how a steam locomotive works. I know what a lot of the controls do, but am baffled by all the valves. The Essex Valley Railroad in CT gives a steam operation course once a year then you get an hour behind the throttle. I've been tempted to do it. The same thing was offered last summer by The Strasburg RR with 611 which I jumped at, but everything was sold out by the time I heard about it. It was $611 for an hour behind the throttle, locomotive only. Essex is around the same price and you get to run the train. 765 was offering a cab experience 2 years ago for $1000, before the pandemic.
I would have loved to do that 611 experience too even at that high price, but it was sold out long before I heard about it. They do offer cab experiences in their other 3 steam engines. When I was there in May they were doing that in 475. Someone told me that those experiences sell out almost as fast as they're offered, so I've got to figure out how to snag one. Hope you get that chance to do one someday too!
if you go standard coach jamie, it's better cuz if you can grab a seat in the 1st or 2nd coach behind the engine. the sound is MUCH better. and it's cheaper too. believe me, my folks and i rode in the 2nd coach on the may 28th ramble and the sound from being that close to the engine was just sooo good. you cannot get that same sensation from a dome car or the same sound from a dome car.
That sounds like an awesome experience you had! I've already got my dome car ticket for October, but for sure I'll do the coach next time. I'll probably ride this once or twice a year, so lots of chances to try stuff out. Are you going to do any more rides this year?
@@JamieMakin im tempted to ride in september. but somehow i'll end up too busy with my job and other functions during that month. so probably not. but at least i can say i got to ride the very first ramble. and that is somethin i will never forget. and maybe once a year like you said. one has to do it at least once a year.
Getting to ride the first of the new rambles is something you can always treasure! By the way, I saw earlier today that the July and August rambles are sold out. I'm guessing the September one will likely sell out, so keep that in mind if you do get serious about riding it. Personally, I'll most likely always do the fall foliage rides because I struggle with heat intolerance, so a long day out there if it's hot and humid wouldn't be so good for me. And I enjoy the fall colors. I did one of their RDC fall foliage rides last year and absolutely loved it!
Both accommodations have their advantages and disadvantages. Riding first class is most enjoyable, but you do lose some sound. We rode standard coach July 2 only because everything else was sold out. We were right behind the snack car and the sound was pretty good but I know it would have been better further forward. Some excursions I've ridden put a baggage car behind the locomotive exclusively for sound recording. NS used to do that with 611. That locomotive at 70 MPH was incredible! I'll never forget it.

I might have another chance next month to visit just the steam shop again, we'll see if that event is doable for me. Indeed, trains have always been in the family. We went to see them nearly every day, and even when we didn't, there were always model trains in the basement to play with. My dad even built a little red caboose playhouse in our backyard. Gosh I miss that! As for the traffic, I eventually "gave up" and made a right turn instead of the left turn that I wanted to. Went up the road to get a snack and beverage, then used the traffic light up there to get back in the direction I wanted lol! Hope you're having a lovely day at the farm, keep warm! 🚜🌻☀️

Indeed she will be! They announced that sometime between my ride leaving Port Clinton and arriving in Reading. I found out when I was waiting to get off the train and am very happy to hear it!
425 is a toy. 2102 has had cameos in my nightmares through all of childhood. It's fierce and scary like a doberman and I feel electricity through me every time I see it. I love 2102.
Sadly, 425 is going to have to go down for her 15 year rebuild, so this will be her last year running until the rebuild. Unless the FRA allows her to have a couple of farewell excursions in 2023, because they did it for a different steam locomotive, Iowa Interstate 6988. Even though it was past due for its 15 year rebuild, they let her do some final runs this year before the start of her rebuild.
That's cool to know that sometimes they make exceptions for the 15 year rebuilds. From what I understand though, they will be starting 425's work after her final two runs in November. Hopefully that doesn't take too long! I've heard it could be 6 months to a year or more.
No worries! She is going to run 3 times in 2022 - July 9th from Mountain Top to Jim Thorpe and back, and November 5th and 6th from Reading to Jim Thorpe and back. After that she will go down for her rebuild. I've been told that could take 6 months to a year. Maybe we'll see her again in late 2023, but I'm thinking 2024 is more likely.
Those blue LGSR coaches I’m pretty sure there’s 4 of them left but now that Lehigh gorge scenic railway is back after the tax stuff I don’t think they will repaint them because someone told me that when LGSR shut down for the tax stuff they started repainting most of the stuff red because they didn’t know if LGSR would return i don’t know if this is true but I’m just saying what I hear or guess
They've got it down to just two blue cars that need repainting. From what I hear they'll be getting done soon along with dome car #6. The trains have been looking fantastic when they've all got the freshly painted red cars.
Yeah And After Her Final Excursion On November 5, 425 Will Go Down For Her FRA 1472 Day Inspection And Hopefully We Will See 425 Again In Late 2023, But I’m Thinking 2024 Is More Likely.

@@JamieMakin hi Jamie! At least take your overnight bag, just in case lol 😂 but you’ll have to take the kitties too!
That’s awesome that you have all that history and connection with trains, no wonder your so knowledgeable about them! Well o am looking forward to your nxt adventure, it’s a whole new world for me, I am learning every video! Hope you’re having a wonderful day Jamie, see you on the tracks 🚂🙌🏼🤩
I’ve Heard That 425 Will Be Running A Christmas Train In December Before Her FRA Rebuild.
She will
@@jessdatheturdle6602 Yeah. 425’s Christmas Runs Are Scheduled On December 3, 4, 17, & 18, 2022 And Then 425 Will Go Down For Her FRA Rebuild.
They're both amazing locomotives, but 2102 is in a league of its own!
What if 425 can doublehead with 2102 again for a second time like they did in 1987 on the days of the BM&R?
I would totally love to see that!! As far as I know they don't have any plans to do that, but hopefully after 425's rebuild they'll consider it.
I bet they'll double head some day. I'm waiting for 2100 to show up!
@@1940limited That’s what we would like to see one day!
With 2102 to take 425's place. RBMN will still be putting on spectacular excursions.
@@JamieMakin You can be sure RBMN will get it done quickly and right! :-)
They just finished 425's new smokestack, so it'll be nice to see that when I chase her Saturday!
@@JamieMakin I'll be sure to look for your videos!
hey what dates will 425 be running the excursions?
my bad just saw she was being rebuilt
Alright thanks for the info 👍
iowa pacific dome car is from slrg
Good info, thanks!
425 Is Gonna Have A New Smoke Stack Or A Funnel. This Is Why Her Face Is Missing. I’m Hopping That She’ll Run Again On July 9th.
Ah! That's cool to know, and that would explain why they were doing some welding in that area. I can't wait to see her on July 9th.
Yeah And After Her Final Excursion On November 5, 425 Will Go Down For Her FRA 1472 Day Inspection And Hopefully We Will See 425 Again In Late 2023, But I’m Thinking 2024 Is More Likely.
