I really think this scene has a lot between the lines. Given the fact that the movie deals with homosexuality and the segregation against gay people during that time period, let alone that region of the country was pretty harsh. A simple gesture as a duel of the alphas is almost a rivalry of saying that gay men are just as competent to know how to raise a child than a straight macho man does. Jack has an edge here because he is a better father figure here than the kid's grandpa. Jack is also standing up for himself and for his family. There's something bittersweet about it in the midst of all the tragedy that takes place in this story, I think he actually did love the family that he had for himself, despite him knowing full well that he is a gay man. Masterfully crafted movie that deserved the Oscar for Best Picture.
That's is such a great analysis. I also love that it shows how a gay man is more perceptive to the gender roles. When Jack is the one who appreciates the struggle of his wife -- "not till he finishes eating the meal that his mama took three hours fixing" it shows the understanding between those who hold little power (though of course they had a troubled marriage due to his sexuality). But still a great scene with a lot of implication.
Love how he mentions his wife/mother of his child spent 3 hours to cook a meal for her son & family. That's a good loving husband, but I haven't seen the movie. Yet I would still wager that Jake's character is a good husband/father.

I still think the father in-law had something to do with Jack's death... later in the movie when Jack's wife is telling Ennis how he died, she doesn't seem upset or emotional about losing her husband. That story about the tire exploding in Jack's face seemed like a cover up. I think she knew what was really going on.
Well I hate to say this and I've never disrespect a woman before but if that's the case then the father n law and the wife are some sick bastards that should get the death penalty that's the way I feel I'm sorry if I sounded harsh before.
