I loved that reply, it continued to show that he was really accepting of people being gay. On a Howard Stern interview he responded that he was very naïve in not realizing that being an actor playing someone gay or the fact the movie was about a gay couple was controversial or bad. He is an actor, either way he is kissing a stranger.

"I wish I knew how to quit you." One of the most iconic lines in American films. Profound in its stark rawness, despair, loneliness, longing and sadness. Heartbreaking that it took his own death for Jack to finally be able to quit Ennis.
A powerful film about love lost, regret and loneliness that I have never been able to watch more than once - even after all this time. It is so unbearably painful, all the more so with Heath's death at such a young age.

Couldnt have said it better. I watched it for the second time yeterday, only watched it once before back in 2006, and I mean I always watch everything a lot of times, if theres for example a season finale, I watch those last minutes or seconds over ad over again, I keep rewinding it, I know it has to to with my OCD, but man, I was about to rewind it to relieve that scene over and over, that little scene when Ennis says "Jack I swear" In my mind I thought I remembered jack saying something like "oh jack" but it just came to me like 1 or 2 seconds before he says it.. jack I swear.. I was gon rewind it, but my jaw hurt so bad, my cheeks felt really heavy, I just let it play, as much as my OCD was begging me to rewind it and watch Heaths face again and hear his words again, I just let it play, there wasnt nothing to make sure of, nothing to try and print into your head, the moment, the scene itself was enough, I just let it be and then it ends, and let it be. Beautiful and a really dense experiencr.
I wouldn’t describe the line as one of the most iconic in American films, lines like il be back and run forest run I would describe as iconic but a great film nevertheless
True. " I wish I knew..." Did you read the Annie Proulx short stories? That rawness is part of her writing style. How to say a lot with little words, but cutting deep and sticking with you. Amazing.
Got the DVD, over the years I watched the movie 30 times I guess but I can't watch the end ( the shirt) a 2nd time.
@@tacofingerz7247 I know exactly what you mean. Tragically interrupted love is inexpressibly hard to bear in a movie; most of all this one. Like you, I risk re-watching the closing scenes. from time to time; recalling the widespread sobbing of the audience in the cinema. David Lean's ''Brief Encounter' makes me weep (not as copiously) but I've been able to watch that often; maybe because I'm queer.
I can only watch brokeback mountain once in my lifetime because it hurts me so much to see Heather Ledger’s character be left alone. 😭
Oddly, we arrived at the same conclusion. I found it compelling, the emotions profound and it caused me far to much pain to ever watch this again.

@@Domihork COME AGAIN? I know that there are a lot of controversial opinions on this movie and the characters, but Ennis was not a horrible person at all. He was terrified of being outed and he struggled with it more than Jack because of his childhood trauma. Yeah, he wasn't the nicest to Jack at times, but it's just because he was scared of loving him. It was the 60s for Christ's sake. But he did love Jack, and he had to pretend his whole life to be someone he wasn't, and he wasn't allowed to properly love Jack. I don't know about you, but I'd be pretty damn bitter, too.
@@alexiswilson8972 He wasn't horrible just to Jack, he was horrible to his wife as well. I really believe that the only reason Jack loved him was because they didn't spend that much time together in one go. If they were together for months, Jack would leave.

so many people misunderstand this movie and its characters. like, first of all, "i wish i knew how to quit you" is literally the most heartbreaking line in the most heartbreaking scene in the movie, and more than that the more memeable "high altitude fucks" line is in the same scene. not to mention "jack nasty" which the cast themselves had memed the fuck out of as they were promoting the movie. so, i wish that first line got laughed at a little less.
second, there's this perception straight audiences have of jack as "the seducer" or the one who's more ~out and proud~ than ennis is, and it reflects a complete misunderstanding of queer history and what it's like to live as a queer person when you can't be open about who you are. jack and ennis we're clearly getting vibes off of each other before jack initiated the relationship. ennis was too scared to act on it for good reason--he witnessed a gay bashing at a very young age, and was overall more introverted anyway.
people forget that jack and ennis both had children to take care of for a big part of their relationship. jack wasn't worried so much about his family because his wife was rich, but ennis was terrified of being broke and not being able to support his daughters. that's a big contention point in the " i wish i knew how to quit you" scene. and like...the fact that we see jack regularly sleeping with other men doesn't mean he was more "out" than ennis was. they *both* had to live in the closet. jack just had life circumstances and a personality type that made it easier for him to envision a life for the two of them. of course jack's murder isn't his fault, but what so many people don't get is that ennis acts in the more grounded reserved way because he's scared for jack's life as much as his own--and that's what makes jack's death all the more tragic. ennis was as invested in their relationship as jack was, he just didn't always know how to show it. and wow i have a lot of feelings about this movie.

It's been a long time since I've seen this movie, but after reading your remarks, I think I may have misinterpreted parts of this film. I plan to watch it again, keeping your observations in mind. I think I may have overlooked some things. As to the ending, I took it to mean Jack had been murdered, but his wife was telling Ennis the official public story the family had decided on. Now, based on your comments, I'm wondering if Ennis was imagining his greatest fear for Jack had finally just come to pass. At any rate, this is an important film that, among other things, should have won Best Picture. That it didn't was, in my opinion, an act of cowardice on the part of The Academy. Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful comments.

much, I have never been able to watch it again - all the more because of Heath's real-life
death and particularly his cremation. That was (to me) like cremation erased his ever
being a living human being in this planet. I can't get my head around that.

I watched this film last night. Cried my heart out. It is truly phenomenal, and really instills a sense of empathy in you. Just watching them live in so much fear and sadness and desperately wanting to be with each other makes you feel like you never want to be someone who condemns a love between two people. This movie is so devastating and beautiful. RIP Heath, I love you, and Jake, you're magic. If you haven't already, I recommend you watch it.

Literally one of the best movies ever made! I went to see it at a local independent theater, which was packed. When the credits rolled, the entire theater was so silent, you could hear a pin drop. I headed towards the restroom and there was a heterosexual man, I would guess in his 40's at the sink, bawling his eyes out. His friends were asking him if he was okay. I have never in my life seen that kind of reaction to a movie. To anyone that has never seen it, I say watch it! You will be amazed at how this story transcends sex and is just about two people who absolutely need to love each other.

About 7-8 years ago this movie was my entire life. All the love I felt for the movie then just came rushing back…
It was my life as well. I saw the movie twice. When it first came out and a few years later. I was more impacted by the second time. I felt very angry after watching it, yes I also cried. I was angry because I was in an unresolved love triangle: An un fulfilled husband and wife, an unfulfilled lover , my incapacity to accept that marriage, I felt very angry towards him. The sense of an unfulfilled love , a relationship with limits and a diet of love.

I love the change in Jake’s demeanour when he reminisces about Heath. He looks and sounds like he did during the Brokeback Mountain press tour. Young, inexperienced, and excitable. It’s all very very bittersweet. Miss you, Heath, you rockstar!

What is it with this actor - I just can`t stop watching those interviews with him!! Of course there are his movies that offer such a wide spectrum of great entertainment, and yesss, he is a beautiful man, but on top of that he really seems to be a very likeable, intelligent and humorous person. Nice to see there are so many here who appreciate him, too :-)!

I love this guy and the movie had a profound impact on my life. I was SO EMOTIONAL after watching the movie I could barely breath...I could barley drive from crying SO HARD. Prior to this, I had not cried in years...I thought I’d lost the ability to cry. At this point, I’ve not been able to watch the movie again.
I love this interview…especially how he talks about how good Heath was with the horses. 😂😂😂 I will forever love those 2 men for bringing this love story to life.

I saw this in 2005 when I was still a teenager and rewatched it tonight. FIFTEEN years later and the movie still felt fresh, innovative, and beautifully directed not to mention acted. EVERY SINGLE character was flawless. Such powerful themes of love, heartbreak, and impossibility. The fact that it got 8 Oscar nominations, and did NOT win Best Picture has just struck me even harder now that I have a better understanding of the art that was gifted to us and was not fully appreciated by the Academy who considered it good, but not good enough. Guess what, Academy? 15 Years later, and we are STILL discussing this film and its impact. Ledger and Gyllenhaal should have both received Oscars that year.
Unlike so many young actors, Gyllenhaal is significant even when he is not reciting words written for him by others. No wonder he was authentic in "Brokeback," a film which, by the way, just gets better and better with time. Too bad those folks at the Academy who nearly choked on the nomination of Lee's solid opus back in the day cannot say the same about their own work.

Brokeback Mountain is the best romantic film ever made
I saw this movie for the first time last week and it’s been on my mind almost every waking moment since then. It’s has such a profound impact on my already it’s insane.
As with many, the movie represented my life. Been in love with a guy, going on 13yrs. He's hetero, I'm gay. We been intimate more times that I would ever dreamed. Now we live together. Not as lovers. He stopped being intimate with me, brings home women, while I'm alone in the house. When no women, we sleep separately. I wish I could quit him. How it hurts when he's with females.

Regardless of whether or not he is a good guy, it does not sound like an equal relationship. I wish you the best and hope that you find someone who loves you equally in return. What you are describing is not that. You deserve better.

Finally watched this movie, I cried my eyes out !!
What a wonderful man and a talented actor!
One of the saddest film endings ever created ... impossible to keep a dry eye ... this is one of only a handful of films ever made where the whole audience simply stayed put and did not get up and immediately leave their seats ... everyone was trying to collect themselves ...
I came out in the early 80’s. It was an exciting, electric time. I was young, and met an older man who I was attracted to. One of the stranger things I remember him telling me was men of his generation who were gay, and couldn’t come out to their families, squeaked around lying who they were dating, by calling them “she” or “her”. It was something that was done all the time. Of course their families never got to meet the “girlfriend”, but still could discuss who they were dating. I could never imagine how difficult it would be to live your life like that.

Mr. Gyllenhaal I think is right in that by humanizing a gay relationship that was widely circulated to such great acclaim he absolutely did play a positive role in real life that helped society in general to become more accepting of gay folks.
I really did enjoy the film and the scene that still gets me today is the anguish, despair and frank physical pain Mr. Gyllenhaal portrays under the bridge when his friend drives off after their first summer together.
To watch someone you truly love just drive off is something horrifying to experience for anyone-regardless the sex of the people involved-and is a universal. Also, when Mr. Ledger smells Mr. Gyllenhaal’s shirt at the end of the film I cry every time even though I’ve seen the scene several times.

Unfortunately there’s ample evidence that there isn’t a widely held belief that it’s okay for an actor to be gay now. It’s okay for straight actors to play gay characters but there are VERY FEW out gay actors who get cast as leading roles as heterosexuals. I just wrote, directed & produced an award winning play that has a straight male character who sleeps with a man & had problems finding many actors to even audition. Fortunately one of the few actors who did audition was great & I cast him. It seems though that there is a direct correlation between how much money is on offer & how willing men are to play gay, regardless of their sexuality.

When I watched it I wasn't expecting to get my heart broken so bad. This movie really sticked to my mind
I relate to this movie a lot in many ways but the story hit me harder than I have ever been hit in my life. The more I grew up I figured out the possible consequences for coming out as gay publicly. Though I told one of my close friends then I told my Sister and my supposedly close friend got me ravaged in an alleyway next to a pizza parlor in Austin TX. My sister didn't talk to me for years and just recently got back in contact with me after feeling guilty with the current movements of everything. I could tell it wasn't because she felt guilty it was so she could keep a good public image of herself it was in her eyes and that feeling never left them. My Parents sadly was told by my Sister but luckily they took it a lot better than she did and I still have a strong relationship to this day with them. I tried burying these feelings in the back of my mind but it kept crawling it's way to the surface no matter how hard I tried. Right now I am 47 hoping I could have found someone sooner but couldn't because of my idiotic insecurity after what happened. It's a void just hoping to be filled by someone who understands, that is why I have a deep connection with this movie.

The film changed so many people’s lives in both subtle & unsubtle ways .I would also say it’s so much more than just a - Gay cowboy- movie....They were also parents and good parents as well...
That was such a well done movie. I had heard all the hoopla about the movie, and sat down to watch it. I am a hetero woman, so wasn't sure what I'd think of it all. Surprisingly, I didn't come away from the movie even thinking about the gay theme. All of the actors were incredible. They all played people that drew me in. I saw it simply as a story of love and life and each of us struggling to find our place in the world. It definitely left a lasting impression on me.
Daniel Day-Lewis, now retired from acting at such a young age, has won 3 Best Actor Oscars. When he won a Best Actor prize at a Screen Actors Award ceremony, he said he would like to dedicate the award to the late Heath Ledger. He further stated that he had never seen a better performance from a male actor than in the last part of the movie, "Brokeback Mountain". I don't have the exact wording, but UA-cam has it.
As for the movie not winning the Oscar, despite winning the vast majority of Best Picture prizes from critics orgs all over the world; and even in some "red states" here in the USA, there are many reasons. A big one is the report that Jay Leno used his talk show to make fun of it, during the critical Oscar award season. Now, many retirees who vote for the Oscar have the time to watch late night shows. (Do the math). What is more puzzling is that Tony Curtis declared that he will not vote for BB for the Best Picture; and what's more, he won't see it! Tony Curtis? Also, Jodie Foster, now happily gay, came out against the film. Perhaps they feared the movie would popularize homosexuality; and that was unacceptable to them. That I can understand. Finally, the voters were skittish and decided to feel better about themselves by voting for "Crash", a movie that got 2 stars from a NY film critic. It was also hated by certain minorities.

I love this man so much. I could watch him talk in interviews or act in film, forever, without ever getting bored. It's not even just his performance, he's also in some of the best films. Normally if JG film comes out, I KNOW it's going to be good. He's so beautiful in every way, funny, cute, charismatic & intelligent, too. Give this man some awards! ♡

I’ll never forget seeing brokeback mountain as a teenager in the cinema, and the film wasn’t advertised as a queer story. It was advertised initially as a tale of two friends. So when me and my friends saw it (I’m gay and they were all queer in one way or another) we were pleasantly surprised to see this kind of representation on the big screen! Excellent film!
I remembered how I cried so much after watching this movie.
PS: The last movie that made mr cry was Titanic and it was years and years ago.
PPS: Im not a cry person, so it takes a very, very sad thing to make me cry.

still reeling from watching Brokeback last night for the first time... wow. The actors' performances, the cinematography, the script, the scenery.. and Jake Gyllenhaal speaks so well on the meaning of the movie, it's heartwarming.

Watched this movie for the very first time back in July this year, and I cried most of the times, especially when Jack and Ennis had fight. I can't remember any other movie that made me feel speechless and made me think about it all the time after I watched it. Brokeback Mountain is the only movie that did this to me. Made me accept the fact that I love both men and women. But still i'm so afraid of this, except for psychologist, I never told anyone else that I watched this movie because in my country there are lot of homophobes.

@@entamame8467 What's even worse, I'm having a battle with anxiety mostly because of this for almost 10 years. I was in love with my former best friend, he cut me off because he was suspicious and a huge homophobe. And this movie brought the memories back to me when I was hanging out with him. I hate him and I don't want to see him anymore, but at the same time I miss him so much "I can hardly stand it".
