20 years of TAC advertising, Everybody Hurts

- On December 10th 1989 the first TAC commercial went to air. In that year there were 776 deaths on our roads, by 2008 that number had fallen to 303.
This five minute retrospective of road safety campaigns is a compilation of 20 year of TAC ads. The montage features iconic scenes and images from commercials that have helped change the way we drive, to the song Everybody Hurts by REM.
This TAC campaign is a chance to revisit some of the images that have been engraved on our memories, remember the many thousands of people who have been affected by road trauma and remind us all that for everyone's sake; please, drive safely.
There's no one someone won't miss.
Towards Zero is a TAC vision for a future free of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
It acknowledges that as humans, we make mistakes. But when those mistakes happen on our roads we come off second best, because our bodies aren't designed to absorb high impact speeds. They never have been and never will be.

It's ironic how American TV shows like Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, etc., and movies are loaded with graphic gore that Americans love, but somehow these TV commercials would be considered "too graphic" for American TV. It should be shown during the Super Bowl every year when 100 million Americans have their eyes glued to the TV screen!

There's a reason tv shows denote fantasy violence (or any other kind of specific violence) in their ratings, and you gotta admit this kind of material airing right next to a my little pony commercial on daytime television would be incredibly inappropriate. The stuff that's shown on tv does cater to when certain ages are usually watching, it always has. that's why it's considered too graphic, not because of the content, but because it's a commercial that anyone can watch if it's in a particular time slot.

i think people are more moved by these sort of ads with gore because it could realistically happen and i find that in fantasy/any made up story kind of set ups that the deaths don't take as large as an emotional toll as seeing things that could actually happen done by real people. Not to say that this is over the top or that this is unacceptable. This is one of the best ads i've seen to do with crashes. People need to be scared to take things seriously
I was an idiot as a 17 year old and sped like 3 times the speed limit on backroads for fun, and then I ended up causing an accident. No one was hurt (fortunately), but the officer made me take a 5 hour class on speeding. They ended it with showing this video. This was by far the most effective part of the class and the part I remember the most. I remember as soon as I left the class, I called my dad and told him I loved him.
Then we know it's effective and it works. Good in you mate, safe travels.

I've never drove drunk but this video always makes me want to call my loved ones too.
I worked at the BC, Canada Police Academy and made sure every recruit and every field trainer watched this video. Such wonderful work by the Aussies. Fact: This video has saved many lives.
Former worker in bars here in BC they should be showing this in high schools as well.There are tons of beer cans in the ditch from drunks driving the highway by my house.We need more funding for RCMP highway patrols.Alcohol is a scourge.

Yeah it did, before these ads were run here beginning in late 1980's the annual Victorian road toll was spiralling out of control. These ads were a very graphic and powerful deterrent which saved hundreds of lives and simply due to the impact of their content resulted in a lot of public discourse in public spaces and around the dinner table. The sad part is that due to the snowflakes these ads aren't permitted these days and the road toll here is climbing again. Stay safe and blessed there.

This is by far, the most powerful video I have seen concerning intoxicated driving. I'm a sixty year old man, and this film, along with a perfect choice of music, brought me to tears.

A mate of mine was riding his new bicycle through a green light at an intersection in Sweden. He was so excited about the new bike and getting out into nature. A man ran a red light and took him out. His wife is alone, he didn't attend his daughters wedding and will never know his grand children. Just one of many. Great video even if it put tears in my eyes.
I'm a 15 year old guy and I have seen this same video 5 times now but after seeing it in health class the other day I was bawling after class, nobody outside of my family has ever seen my cry in all my life I swear! But my uncle died a few monthes ago from a drunk driver and it hit me hard yesterday, but my teacher was very helpful so I bought her some cookies today. nothing has ever gotten to me like these videos can
I am deeply sorry for your loss. I'm a 17 year old guy and I have very strong emotions, which is why I also cried when I saw this video the first time because it really hit me with the graphic content of this commercial, even tough people feel extreme emotions sometimes as well.

I watch this video occasionally to scare me into not driving fast and to NEVER drink and drive. I even play this in the car so it reminds me of this video so I know to slow down to a safe speed. Thanks you, TAC. So much.
Yesterday my class was watching commercials for drugs. we watched the Marijuana and ectasy adds but at the end of the class they showed us this one. before watching this our class was fine and talking about the side effects of the drugs we were learning about and the teacher suddenly asked us if we wanted to leave for the last Comercial. our class was really into these since we got to watch youtube which was banned in the school. none of us left. after watching the video some were crying and others were quiet shaken. the teacher told us that these adds are to scare people out of doing these things and i think it worked. im glad they showed it to our class.

I’m 24 and currently in 911 driving school getting my drivers license. They showed this in class, with a bunch of teenagers, everyone was silent. Everyone was impacted. I tried my best to hold back tears but the graphic nature was TOUGH but NECESSARY for the message to be delivered

The most powerful ad that should be run every November, every night for 2 months.
When I was taking my license, we had a showing of this video. Even in such a non-relaxed setting, many were in tears afterwards, I know I were. This video should be mandatory for realizing the dangers of unsafe driving
I share it every Christmas on Facebook (did so today), and get high school students to watch it, and I know it has saved many, many lives and prevented so many accidents. My son and his friends saw it five years ago when they were 17 and about to get their licences and they were so moved by it, that some delayed getting their licences for years because they were worried they'd be responsible for killing a friend... and not one of them has ever got behind the steering wheel with any alcohol in their system, they all use designated drivers, they don't speed, they are careful and not one has had an accident yet. I can't begin to guess how many lives this has saved, but I know that many of my overseas friends also share it, so all over the world there are people alive because of this. Well done.

We were shown this in year 10 during our classes on safe driving. Years later, I still remember this so vividly. If you can watch this and still decide to speed, drive while drunk or high, check your phone while behind the wheel or just in general drive recklessly, you should have your licence disqualified.

I recently lost my license due to drink driving. I thought I was fine, had had tea at a friends house and shared a bottle of wine. Be aware that drink driving does not necessarily mean you are struggling to stand up. I thought I was quite capable of driving had even been to supermarket. It was an eye opener and when I get my license back I will not drink anything if driving. Play it safe

When I was a child I saw this, and I can't tell how I felt in that moment. Now I'm older and it's powerful and I think now I can learn the lesson.
They showed us this in Driver's Ed. I was speechless. I hope more people see this and it makes an impact on them. I showed one of my best friends this because I don't ever want to lose her this way.
I've had 3 people close to me murdered (yes MURDERED) by drunk drivers,all were repeat offenders and 2 of them had caused serious injuries in previous crashes (Don't ever dare to call them accidents-there's nothing accidental about making the decision to drive drunk.) .Commercials such as these should be mandatory viewing for everyone before they are issued a driver's licence.

While most would be disgusted and traumatized because of these ads (me included.), I find it amazing how most of these campaigns are still active today and still trying to convince the world to actually think, in a very graphic and convincing way. Here's to 20 more years of helping change the world!
I've watched this video many times and every single time, it has always brought me to tears. This video should be shown to everybody who even thinks for one second that they can drink and drive and be perfectly fine!
I show this at the end of my Traffic Safety classes and it always hits my students right between the eyes!

My company commander (us army) showed us this. Very touching video that shows you the reality of drinking and driving. We need commercials like this in the states.
Absolutely the best advert for road safety. I used to work in Emergency and road accidents were a nightmare. Everybody who had a ticket for speedy or drunk driving, should watch this video. Life's can change in a second and nobody can turn the clock back.
that scene with the mother holding her dead child in her arms at 3:14 is one of the most powerful scenes to me, that poor mother. Not to say the others weren't sad but this really stood out to me for some reason.

My 'Forensic Medicine' teacher showed our entire class this video today and l had to come find it and watch it again so that l could fully *feel* it... this video taught me two things: Driving must be done with the utmost of resposibilities... and those for whom you care deeply can be gone from your life in the blink of an eye; treasure them and let them know how much you care.

I'll be 17 years sober this July. The smartest thing I've ever done was quit after 27 years of mostly hard drinking, 3 crashes and 10 DUI's. My highest blood alcohol? .42 I should have died. I thank God I never killed anyone because of my drinking. Had I kept going I'd surely have hurt or killed someone and I'd definitely have gone to prison. It would be impossible to enjoy any of my life had I killed due to drinking. Get sober and live a good life.

My boyfriend lost his daughter 8 years ago when her "friend" drove drunk. The driver lived and was not punished for it because her Dad was a cop. Evidence was lost, people were hushed. She went on to maim another kid who was an athlete, Again, she walked....karma may be losing a daughter or son of her own with herself or another drunk driver at the wheel. She never apologized to my boyfriend nor did she even attend the funeral as her parents thought it might have a "negative affect" on her....

I do public speaking to groups on this subject and take him with me though he isn't able to tell the story because he has a severe traumatic brain injury that has left him 100% dependent upon me for all his care!
We should make these types of PSAs in the US and air them on national television frequently. Until that happens, the Australian PSAs should be mandatory in all driver's Ed classes.
If this isn't on TV then it needs to be. Run it all year for all I care.

I drove a tow truck for 15yrs and it's a very sad thing to witness all the horror caused by drinking and driving. Now we have inattentive driving doing just as much damage. Why don't people wake up?
Some young and older people think that they are invincible and that their actions don't have consequences or they simply just don't care about anyone else but themselves it's like " I will have as many drinks as I want and do drugs as much as I want if I die or someone else dies so be it" they just don't care, until they have to face the punishment for their carelessness.
I just viewed this video today at a MADD victim impact panel. There were about 90 people there, and several groups laughed during it. I couldn't believe it. I live in the United States, and am sickened by my peers. This video really moved me. I realized what a stupid fucking thing I did. I am ashamed. This video should be shown before anyone can get a license. I know this is either a Canadian or Australian video. What the hell is wrong with people and what the hell is wrong with my country? I just wanted to say that, because of this video, its really changed my life. I don't know who made it but thank you Canada, Australia, or what country, thank you.

Aussie commercial, mate :) if this has changed someone's life or stopped a would-be speeder, drink driver etc then that is great...still got a while to go... I have a young friend who gets her lisence soon and se's already talking about speeding... it's all F the police with her... she really needs to pull her head in before she gets herself or someone else killed. i am very worried about her, but she's a typical teen who doesn't care about what everyone else thinks... love her to bits... hopefully the day will come when she'll mature somewhat...until then...just hope no one, including herself, is hurt.
Just saw this ad in Drivers Ed class today in Wisconsin, which at first I found weird because it's from Australia, but as I watched, I saw just how effective it was.
It was by the Transport Accident Commission of Victoria a statutory authority that provides the compulsory third party insurance for motor vehicles.

I remember these ads from the 90s, i was in my teens, and my mum found them very upsetting. An example of how an advertising campaign can have a impactful affect on attitudes and behaviours. There is the danger of shock tactic overload where ppl get inured to the images in the ads and this is why educational campaigns have to find different ways to get the message out.
How can anyone dislike this? It's a great warning to society and it needs to be watched by everyone.

Then it did it's job. One should be absolutely terrified of getting behind the wheel impaired (drink, drug, fatigue, etc) and not do it.
As a paramedic I use this video when talking to people who have been ordered by a judge to attend a traffic offenders intervention programme it certainly hits home with them as to what can and does happen when you drive under the influence
The fact that I could've been dead within seconds honestly makes me cry alittle, having to see my mom be hurt like that for my actions, or having any chance of hurting someone else's daughter, father, son or mother really made me thankful nobody was hurt, it made me rethink.

One of the most powerful PSAs I've seen. I hope this makes a difference and turns a light bulb on for people.
The trauma suffered by first responders from road traffic accidents is devastating.
They live with it forever.
The brutality of the scene, the grief of the loved ones, the forensic aftermath.
One day their armour falls, they break.
For those who do not know - Each of the incidents is a recreation of an ACTUAL ACCIDENT - down to the causes, road conditions and so on.
These situations are REAL... not made up by some writer somewhere but taken from actual police reports. Think about that. That woman holding her child begging to be allowed to take her dead son home while the driver is muttering how he was only a little over the speed limit.... the family BBQ were people got drunk and then drove home, never to be seen alive again.... the girl who took off her seat belt and went head first through the windscreen getting terrible facial injuries, back injuries and has to learn to walk again.... ALL REAL.
Just think about it.
I grew up with these ads, I even remember when the first one came out. I have seen their effect on others. I had a friend, Rick who refused to wear a seatbelt until the day his six year old daughter Cassandra, started crying in the car. He asked her what was wrong. Her reply? 'I don't want you to die, Daddy because you didn't wear your belt... like the girl on TV'. He started to laugh for a moment then sobered up looking into her eyes. That was in 1991 or 92, I think. It happened outside my flat in Brunswick and he ended up coming back inside for a moment to tell me what had just happened and he was white as a sheet and shaking. He didn't want his little girl scared like that. Her taking notice influenced him and it got to him when he realised how his actions affected her...He has worn his seatbelt ever since then.

I saw this in my health class today and i bawled my eyes out. I have never cried like that due to a video before. It is so moving, everyone needs to see this.

when i watched this in my 8th grade I was bawling my eyes out.
When I was 7 months pregnant with my youngest son I was driving home one evening, carefully observing speed limits and checking the roads. But a car came through a stop sign and slammed right into me. I was not wearing a seat belt, ironically as it was considered unsafe to do so into the 3rd trimesta. My car turned and tumbled and I went everywhere, finally taken to hospital by ambulance. The driver of the car that hit me was unlicensed, his car unregistered, he had too many passengers who also were not buckled in (some suffering serious injuries as a result of the crash) and he had been drinking and speeding. The courts threw the book at him. I had a worrying 3 months until my son was born.
I got out of the car without a scratch. My son is perfect and healthy. Every day I thank God for this miracle. But I can affirm, as an ex-nurse, that my experience was rare. It just doesn't happen that way. Please everyone, remember that to everyone else, you are that someone else this happens to. So for your own sake, do the right thing.

my mum was killed by a drink driver 20 years ago. the hurt and pain still lives with me today......to those who think "it's ok" to drive while drunk or stoned your fooling yourself. i take my hat off to TAC and their campain to reduce the australian road toll. to those who think these commercials are "too graphic" consider that road accidents both fatal or not ARE a fact of life. please continue the good work TAC.

I was arrested for driving under the influence...I had to sit in that cell thinking about it all...what if I had killed someone? What if a drunk driver killed anyone I loved? I will never EVER drink and drive again. One of the stupidest decisions I have ever made.
I was shown this at school by my Social teacher today. Wow, watching this video gave me chills, I hope that when people see this they realize how much they risk when drinking and driving. Everyone please be safe.

Received this video by email again. It's been circulating in Brazil for years now, which is great because drivers there can be very reckless and drive after drinking. I lost a cousin for this reason on Christmas day 8 years ago. Another cousin nearly died after crashing against a tree. He'd spent the night at a nightclub and drank more than he should have. He suffered some brain damage and is not an independent person anymore. His mother told me it's just like looking after a baby all over again
These TAC ads have always impressed me with their ability to communicate just how dangerous road travel is and how quickly a simple moment of carelessness can have terrible, life changing - or life ending - consequences. Flinging a ton of metal along a strip of tar barely widely enough to contain it and the opposing stream of metal boxes is dangerous. Please don't ever forget that. Most of the time, we drive well, other road users drive well, we all arrive safely. But it takes less than a second for everything to go horribly wrong. Be safe. :)

I have a license and watching this made me scared the crap out of my pants whenever I'm behind the wheel. Best ad I've ever seen.
I recall the commercial from 4:46 to 4:48 somewhere; it’s the one where a girl gets a brain injury after an accident because she and a friend got into a car with some guys (when she said she’d catch a cab as her way of “Better to be safe than sorry” in a sense) after she’d won a basketball game and had some pizza, and she says, “I wouldn’t be like this if I just said no, and not got into that car.”
It’s called “Don’t Get In” - and it’s superbly well-made and highly well-done as well.. 😊
This whole week my school did Every 15 Minutes and finished off by showing this video today at an assembly. There's no words to describe the emotions from this week and this video. Thank you for posting this video and doing what you do; you are saving lives by showing people this.
i remember watching this when it came out, i was only just about to turn 11 at the time and it absolutely broke my heart.. and still does. the fact that my dad's a firefighter makes it all the worse, considering this is what he has to see on a daily basis. i wish everyone would watch this and take it in, so they can truly see the devastation of dangerous driving. please stay safe everybody x
