Am I Using My Phone Too Much?

  • Do you spend too much time looking at your smartphone?
Imagine you’re at the doctor’s office. There’s a few people in the waiting room and you’ll have 10 minutes to kill. The first thing you do is probably pull out your cell phone. Let those social feeds wash over you like a warm blanket. You don’t have to feel awkward, you’re busy! Look at that photo of pies. So busy. But are you happy? Probably not.
The non profit group “time well spent” gives a few examples of how apps and sites are screwing with us in order to show us as many ads as possible:
Snapchat turns conversations into streaks, redefining how kids measure friendship.
Instagram glorifies the picture-perfect life, eroding our self worth, when you ALL KNOW that food wasn’t that good and you weren’t having THAT much fun.
Facebook segregates us into echo chambers, fragmenting our communities so we end up with an insane president (if you don’t like that I said that, let’s have a reasonable conversation about it in the comments instead of name calling. Better yet, mail@techspank.com. Let’s talk).
All of those things and many more are part of a system that, like shiny slot machines and cigarettes, designed to get us addicted, and miserable.
Studies are showing that this is leading to more stress, messing with our sleep, screwing with kids’ self esteem, ruining friendships, and on and on…
Anyway, you’re watching this video because you were wondering if you were spending too much time looking at your smart phone and it was getting you depressed… Chances are you already know the answer - yes. We all probably are. It’s just so easy to get manipulated. For instance, check out this list of apps, that based on a study from time well spent and moment, make their users most unhappy,
Facebook, reddit, twitter, tinder, instagram, snapchat… chances are you use some or all of them. Can you honestly say any of them really REALLY truly bring you joy? You’ll have to answer that for yourself. I’d suggest a few things, though. Leave the phone at home sometimes. Don’t take it out during dinner or whenever you’re with someone else. It’s just rude. What was the last time you had a meaningful conversation with someone? Was it through a screen? If so, that’s probably not super healthy and maybe go grab dinner. Invite them over for a beer or to smoke some weed. Whatever… talk and make connections in real life. You’ll be way happier when you do. AND you won’t have to spend a thousand fucking dollars on the new fucking iPhone. That’s a topic for another video though.
For now, if you only take one thing away form this video, it should be this: you don’t have to fill every quiet moment with your phone. Try something different. Knit. Read a book. Learn how to play an instrument, because scrolling through social media is one of the most anti-social things you could do. A good tool to use is an app called Moment. You can download it for iOS right now and it’ll help you figure out how much of your time is spent staring at the stupid little thing.

I knew I was looking at my phone too often before I clicked on your video. Just wanted to be a 100% sure so I watched the video. 😉 I don't go on facebook any more at all. Now if I could just figure out how to do the same with you tube. Problem is there's so much stuff on it that's really cool. 😆

Great video! I’m ready to throw this away and move to an island. This is driving me mad. My partner wakes up every morning looking at his stupid phone and not me. I’m just venting here 😂 I probably shouldn’t. I’m sick of it. I’ve deleted the apps and deactivated accounts but now it’s like I have to look at everyone else on their phone since I’m not.
