    Just watching you do this is an incredible experience in itself. However when I saw that crack, I would have stopped... But you ended up pulling it off and making it a piece of beauty! I have to admit, Al, I am amazed at the beautiful job you did on this piece! I didn't think you'd get the wood to stay together with a check that large and deep. The finish you achieved is magnificent! You are still the master, sir! Thanks for sharing this. Take care, .....Gord

      Wow Gord I am honored you stopped by and grateful for such a nice compliment. Far from being a master my friend. I must admit that even though I was mindful of the check but felt confident of the integrity of the piece from the beginning. The fact that the grain was not very straight assures us of a bit of stability. The CA and saw dust helped of course.Thank you.

      @stephboeker7835 7 років тому

      Honestly Al, unfortunately, I haven't seen any finish (save Lacquer) keep it's luster over years. I mean to say that if it lasts a year or 2 w/ out maintenance, it eventually needs a polish, refinish, TLC :) I think it's called "entropy" ...... :) lol :) That said, I find no difference in longevity of Tung Oil compared to Boiled Linseed Oil. But, I only have a few pieces as I give most away !
      Community coffee is the brand I grew up w/ from a boy. My mother use to send it to me from S. Louisiana to San Diego when I lived there for 13yrs. :) lol :) I do love coffee ! :)

    That turned out really nice. I've been using the Tung oil option for a while now. I found that the Tung oil doesn't dry off very quickly, so using a smaller amount in the mix produces a better finish. The oil is only there for lubrication as Shellac becomes very tacky as it dries.

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  7 років тому

      Thanks Paul, This video had been recorded a while back and I just decided to upload it now. The one thing I have noticed is that the mix becomes a bit lumpy. does not mix like the original. you having that problem with your mix?Thanks

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood 7 років тому

      Rebel Art Woodturning I've had no problems with that. I mix my own Shellac which has a limited shelf life. I found that if you use too much oil it stays oily and doesn't really dry. Long term it's Shellac so would expect it to lose its shine which is why cabinet makers etc apply a polish on after.

    Love your videos!
    In my "shine juice", I use linseed oil that is sun oxidized or heat oxidized (stand oil). These are blonder than BLO and won't darken. Commercially this is available from Tried and Tru (Christian Beeksvoort had an article in Fine Woodworking a few years back on this). In Sweden, the only denatured alcohol on the shelves is ethanol with bittrex - a horrible bitter chemical to prevent drinking. This leaches out of the shellac and gave me quite a rude shock the first (and last!) time I drank from my wooden coffee cup.

      Hi Tom Thanks for watching and the compliment. as far as using the Hampshire Sheen no I haven't used it and I am sure it does a fine job. Thank you for watching and the great question. I once in a while would barnish with the wood shavings but never really saw better results that burnish with shine juice. I have seen others get good results with burnishing with shavings, perhaps I don't spend the amount of time required with all the grits before attempting to use such a method. I guess I am a lazy wood turner and will look for best results in shortest amount of effort

    Hi Al lovely platter, can you tell me how to dissolve shellac flakes please, Thanks Ron

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  5 років тому

      I had no idea as I don't do that I purchase mine premixed but Google is my friend and here is what I found. Use a glass or plastic container, add measured amount of alcohol and sprinkle in your dry shellac. Shake every 10 minutes or so for an hour, then let sit overnight. A simple to way to mix an approximate 3# solution is to mix 3 parts solvent to 1 part flakes by volume.

    Great video Al. You do awesome work. Can you tell me why I get dry patches and sometimes streaks in my friction polish? TIA

    • @svidos
      @svidos 3 роки тому

      Dry patches generally occur on the endgrain. be patient sand it down a bit more if you are using a drill usE IT WITH THE LATHE STOPPED ON THOSE AREAS THAN TURN LATHE BACK ON AND SAND IT AGAIN WITH THE LATHE RUNNING. Oops sorry about the caps lock.. if you're still getting those spots try a sanding sealer and wet sand. that will do the trick.
      Good luck

    Mad catch alert - 12.44!!!

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  6 років тому

      Tim I appreciate you watching. Are you sure you saw a "Mad catch" as you say or just saw a lathe stall?A catch is uncontrolled approach that will jerk the tool and could throw the piece off the lathe. A stall is you're cutting along a bit more aggressive than the power of the lathe and the belt slips or the motor stops/stalls....That I get quite a bit but never in danger.

    Good evening , apologize for a question on a old video , I was just looking at you tubes on ob shine juice . I have heard that it will dull with time but I wanted to pop the figure, and a easy fool proof application. So was looking for a cure for the time dulling factor . I could not find what I wanted so decided to experiment, mixed shine juice with 1/3 CA glue , so far , so good , but was wondering if you or anyone else reading this has done or heard of this , is there a down side that you know of ?

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you very much for watching and your experiment. Yeah OB shine juice does tone down a little but I find what is there 3 days later maintains that look from there on. I never even considered CA in the mix. Isn't that too much CA in that mix? does it tack up fast? I will have to try that in a small batch..... Take care be safe my friend.

      @@AlFurtado tried it on small finals, just dropped a bit on a paper towel, first one turned out great , very high gloss . Second had some smears , so I dropped some oil on the towel after the mix for the third , happy with that . Next step is to dilute it down with juice ,as per your suggestion , maybe try 10% ca

    If you get proper boiled linseed oil you do not have to worry about any impurities.

    Using a spindle roughing gouge on a bowl is ridiculously unsafe, please stick with your bowl gouges on these types of turnings. Love the finish though!

    Can we have the recipe for the ob shine juice Al?

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  7 років тому

      Sure I has been mentioned by many turners including me on other videos so I assumed everyone knows it. Sorry, Original formula is equal amounts of Shellac, denatured alcohol and boiled linseed oil. shake and use. I substituted the boiled linseed oil for tongue oil I mix it into a squeeze bottle for easy use
