Nobody said Darkthrone. You interviewed the wrong people.
Darkthrone was death metal then turned punk
+PRHILL9696 are you kidding me
bouba fatoo Not at all but you must be
Sure just ignore all the black metal albums Darkthrone did it's fine really..
Darkthrone could release a japanese synth pop record and they'd still be black metal!
Seriously? Darkthrone? No Burzum?
Lovely Grey -Ha I know! I kept saying the whole time watching this, 'Burzum someone say Burzum how the hell are you not saying Burzum" .Lol uggh And yeah Darkthrone for sure also.
the American metal scene is full of liberals, that's why don't go to shows much these days
burzum, mayhem darkthtone, dissection are the best
Burzum sucks
@@upiiiiiiinginamooooooo2179 oh no .. mayhem only has 1 good album ( de mysteriis dom sathanas)
. Other album was sucks
Darkthrone and burzum is the best choice
Asking Americans about black metal is like asking a swiss man about thai food.
dude should check out Leviathan & Black Funeral before talkin shit. "The US is The Great Satan !" Funny comment though.
Unfortunately, you're right. I'm American, and people who listen to Emperor and Darkthrone and then think they know black metal are all too common. And this isn't just about Scandinavian shit - they aren't even aware of the first wave bands either.
+ReignOvKaos so fucking true have they even seen the french scene??
J.J. Decay Black Funeral & Absu
Scott These nerds are a complete misrepresentation. We have Grand Belial' s Key.
Bathory, hands down.
+PRHILL9696 Ok dude, keyboard tough guy, I've got more important things to do, like rearrange my sock drawers, than to argue with you. You win: Immortal and Gorgoroth are the most inspirational and unequivocally best black metal bands. Black metal wasn't recorded until 1995, and it has only one sound and aesthetic. This fact realized, I no longer consider myself a fan. Thank you for opening my eyes and helping me realize that "real black metal" is simply theater, a joke genre.
opinion's got nothing to do with it... Bathory's early albums are black metal. Bands like Watain pay tribute to bathory on their concerts all the time
So no one fucking cares about the underground
Äussenn what is the greatest band in your opinion? Bathory and Darkthrone have shaped whatever band you are going to name.
@@nicolasmanos4048 my keyboard is so tough it broke my phone... Wait no that was me.... SHIT
Burzum, Bathory & Darkthrone
Other than Emperor and Satyricon your 3 are better than all of the ones mentioned.
They are great bands..But imo Emperor had the best riffs..Ihsahn was a virtuoso on guitar
Facts
Darkthrone, Burzum, Ulver, Bathory. Come on guys, you make us look like the disabled kid in class when it comes to metal
+john girardi Dissection, Agalloch(don't argue subgenres, I know they're kind of un-classifiable but one of those fucks said Cradle of Filth), Mercyful Fate, Venom, Celtic Frost
+john girardi Early Cradle of Filth was Black Metal...
Yes. But this video wasn't taken in the early 90s, and even if it was there are 1,000 better black metal bands out there.
+john girardi ''But this video wasn't taken in the early 90s''. And you think Darkthone, Burzum, Ulver, Bathory and Dissection still play black metal..?
Bathory and Dissection are disbanded, Burzum is doing ambient stuff, and Darkthrone and Ulver moved into different stylistic directions. I'm aware. Tupac isn't rapping at the moment, still one of the greatest rappers of all time. John Elway isn't currently playing football, still one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Do you see what I'm getting at here?
Where's the love for Bathory. They're like how Death is in Death metal. Bathory shits on all other black metal bands it's AMAZING!!!
Paul Pinargote Death in death metal? Lol, no.
Death is overrated. Morbid Angel on the other hand...
The Part-time Nerd possessed is the godfather of death metal
scream bloody gore was the first pure death metal album
I think that to and without Bathory where would black metal even be. Bathory invited the black metal vocals. Quorthon vocals are the best. No black metal singer has ever black screamed like Quorthon
@@spacecadet8843 Death may be overrated, but they don't have a single BAD album in their entire discography.
Morbid Angel on the other hand...
@@spacecadet8843 omfg exactly, finally someone who gets that Death is a little overrated.
This was embarrassing to watch.
Honestly, if I were in this video, I would have said Deafheaven just to piss people off.
Bane's Super Brutal Metal Funtime I’m into raw black metal but oddly I like deafheaven. It’s super hipster and even I laugh that I enjoy them so much. I also love the reaction I get when I say how much I enjoy deafheaven when talking to people.
I love Burzum, Emperor, Mayhem and the others as much as anyone, but my favorite black metal band is without a doubt immortal
-Bathory
-Emperor
-Darkthrone
-Agalloch
-Burzum
-Immortal
-Taake
-Windir
-Abigor
-Summoning
-Sargeist
That list plus a few more underground bands were the only acceptable answers to this question.
holy shit, you literaly just named every single black metal band i listen to
And Sarcofago
WHAT ABOUT DARKTHRONE!?!?!?!?
Is a Legend of Black metal specialy album Panzerfaust
Im surprised no one said Bullet For My Valentine.
Their bm seems to be lacking but at least that dude mentioned Craft
Dissection is still my favorite black metal band of all-time. The atmospheric, symphonic, and hair-raising songs are many. They have a sound that is really hard to outdo in terms of emotional effect and pure evil vibe.
Probably has something to do with the writer of the music being about as evil as someone could be. Oh, Emperor, Darkthrone, and Bathory are also all great. Mayhem too, in their own special way.
Ian Billings One of my favorite black album records is for The Somberlain it has something that the others dont have it feels melodic and the riffs are mind blowing and it still is raw, evil and black.
+Ian Billings Don't forget Burzum. Ulver too. I fucking love Storm of the Light's Bane but I feel like Dissection was a little too close to the fringe between Melodeath and Black Metal to be lumped in with bands like Darkthrone
Ian Billings The album Storm of the Lights Bane is what got me into extreme metal
Dissection did one of the absolute greatest songs in BMI history with where dead angels lie. Absolutely perfect.
Dissection = Death metal..
What, no Darkthrone? Wtf is this shit?
My thoughts exactly.
Seems like most of 'em like corpsepaint metal cept the guy that hailed the BM band from Massachusetts. But Darkthrone is a STAPLE in black metal! I mean, come on!
+Johnny O You're right. This is shit.
They are hipsters not real black fans ....Darkthorne is like basic stone
No Bathory, what a joke
Darkthrone is the best period.
fuck yeah
Agreed
mayhem anyone?
Jeff Lohrber said Mayhem on the last second before he was cut off and switched to someone else.
Daniel Koinis mayhem i would not consider the greatest bm band by any means they have deathcrush and de mysteriis considered as classic but nearly every other album they have put out is very hit and miss emperor i think is the greatest because their entire discography is flawless and not many bands have that
jordan halcrow tbh I don't think mayhem comes close to dark funeral
Daniel Koinis dark funeral kinda have the same problem as mayhem with hit and miss (although its weird the red albums suck but the blue ones are amazing)
jordan halcrow agreeable for most of them
Well that was embarrassing.
Damn right. Half of them looked like hipsters and posers.
@@eyesofvenus they are actualy
cradle of filth isn't black metal
Chickenwomp they've always sound more gothy to me
Pepe Le Puke ! They played pure black metal on "Dusk and Her Embrace" and "Cruelty and the Beast" albums, there is literally no way you can argue against those albums being black metal. "Principles of Evil Made Flesh" is a bit like death metal with a sort of gothic/black metal atmosphere. And from "Midian" onwards they were no longer any kind of black metal aside from a few songs here and there.
To me Cradle of Filth is more of an Extreme Metal band with quite a bit of Black Metal influence and therefore sounds more like a Black Metal band without being one, but this just my honest opinion
I would've bet my entire paycheck he was joking when he fest said that. Wow.
Black metal isn't even my most listened to genre. and even I understand that their not black metal.
Burzum.
I'm so glad that people said Inquisition. They are one of the best.
Peado's though
Inquisition. Hands down, one of the greatest black metal bands to this day.
Shining and Taake
and of course Bathory
Old Wave = Bathory
Second Wave = Immortal
Perfect.
Cradle of Filth?.....not Black Metal.
PelicanGreed COF is one of the all time most successful black metal bands ever
I know right.. i guess people dont know true black metal anymore
Pablo Medrano What is true? It is all opinions. everyone thinks their opinion is right
Actually bathory was the most !! Successful
Pablo Medrano
they were not even called black metal
I agree with emperor and 1349, but Immortal and Mayhem should've gotten more recognition
Dissection man
MASTERS HAMMER... anybody? Wtf...
To me, it has to be Gorgoroth, although Mayhem is a close second. Infernus just creates the best black metal. It's cold and evil, but also hauntingly beautiful. I personally enjoy their albums the most out of the Norwegian scene.
Oh my lord please educate yourself on black metal
@@Celtsryan You replied to my comment from 6 years ago…what makes you think you have an understanding of my knowledge of black metal from this one comment, or that I haven’t increased my knowledge in the years since making it? Then you go on to say the only black metal bands someone needs to know is venom and burzum which you can’t even spell properly. You clearly know nothing at all about metal, and arguing with you is pointless. Why don’t you go and do something with your life? You are absolutely clueless.
@@Celtsryanfully agree. All the comments just name the most vanilla overplayed black metal.
Darkthrone is the answer
Nokturnal Mortum, bitches
Emperor and Behemoth are great too
but they are all overshadowed by the "impaled northern moonforest"
yup, lunar poetry destroys anything anyone here mentioned, destroys all the first wave stuff too
The correct answer is obvious. It was, is and shall be Celtic Frost.
Bathory? Dafuq?
No way in hell the first 2 Bathory albums would be considered thrash.
Surprised no-one mentioned Bathory. Nice to hear Emperors Prometheus get mentions.
The guy who jokingly said Phil Colins had a Bathory shirt so that may be his real answer
Bathory
Casuals.
what a cool guy, i hope one day I can be as cool as you
point down at them ds pvp style
Cool
i was surprised that these bands were not mentioned once:
bathory, venom, nactmystium, and enslaved
First guy from Animals: Crafle of Filth
Animals Member pls
Lol, I know.
CoF where part of the 2nd gen black metal wave of the early ninties, where the music was raw and more "black metal" than most of the overproduced shit out today.
I like how they all gave like the safest answers
Embarrassing. They've been asked for "GREATEST" bm band "EVER" and they're naming bands that are either not black metal or are complete undergrounds (within an underground scene). Thank god for Emperor votes, indeed the best possible answer. Hoped to hear Immortal as well.
This genre would be hard for me to decide on. I like Bathory, Emperor, Gorgoroth, Inquisition, Darkthrone, and Marduk to name a few. I can't narrow it down to one.
For me personally: Emperor's "In the Nightside Eclipse" is the darkest and most atmospheric black metal album ever, although I have to admit that I kinda went out of the scene in the late 90ies/early 2000s, so I can't speak for most of what came after this.
Also for me: Darkthrone, besides "A blaze..", wasn't ever actually that "good", they were an instant cult classic and essential for the development of the scene, but having a super raw production alone doesn't make you a "good" black metal band, and never has. It was something you oughta know and recognise back in the day, but nothing more.
There is probably an argument to be made for Immortal, they had some huge influential albums, and one of the biggest Black Metal Acts in the mid 90ies was actually Marduk, they were the ones a lot of people in the scene looked up to.
One of the newer Bands back then was actually Dark Funeral, and they kinda took the scene by storm, but they were also kinda comedic, everyone who experienced them live would probably agree :D
And then there's Mayhem. I dunno, I feel they got way more attention by everything surrounding them than by their music. But, I give them one actual master piece: Wolf's Lair Abyss is hands down one of the best black metal albums/EPs ever produced, imho.
And finally...Dimmu Borgir. Wether we like where they went with their rock star attitude or not...they were actually really good, they didn't transcend the scene by accident. They were really that good.
Cradle of Filth...kinda the same. Although, even earlier than Dimmu Borgir, they kinda went away from pure Black Metal after their first album. Though it has to be said: We often define Back Metal just by the "Scandinavian black metal", which CoF didn't ever belong too. Just like Venom, they are from Britain, and they have their origins probably closer to Venom itself than most of the Scandinavian bands, who are more directly tied to early Bathory.
Ah, well, let me put out a recommendation there, since no-one brought it up: Have a listen to the "La Masquerade Infernale" by Arcturus (track 4/5). They are beyond Black Metal most of the time, but their origins are clearly be heard, especially with Hellhammer (Mayhem) on the drums, and the voice of Garm (Ulver).
Oh, and since some people in the comments brought up Dissection: Storm of the Light's Bane is actually one of my favourite metal albums ever, bt they can hardly be considered black metal.
Write a para' on *Behemoth*
American hipster boys in Party City makeup talking about Cradle of Filth & Satyricon.
This is what we've come to.
+PRHILL9696 what the fuck? don't recall saying that at all. you obviously are not intelligent enough to understand what i was saying. please kindly fuck off.
Whats the band (music) playing in the begining and at the end of this material?
I'd have to go with Mayhem Dimmu Bogir and Behemoth
My Top 10 fav BM bands:
10: 1349
9: Mayhem
8: Gorgoroth
7: Immortal
6: Carach Angren
5: Darkthrone
4: Burzum
3: Leviathan
2: Xasthur
1: Drowning The Light
good top 3
what's The song at the end
what is the song at the start of the video ??
Archgoat, 1349, Dimmu Borgir, Gorgoroth.
Maybe Borknagar, or Fester from my hometown, the one band that blended melody and black\death into one punchingbag.
"Cradle of Filth" seriously!!! Enough internet for today.
MERCYFUL FATE
What's the outro song?
It has to be either Mayhem , Darkthrone , or Bathory HANDS DOWN
Emperor,'s maybe "mainstream" nowadays, but still, they are totally right quoting Emperor so many times! Really hard to decide, there are so many BM bands that are very good... ( and so many that are bad..) . Bathory, Emperor, Rottting Christ, Mayhem, Taake, Blut aus Nord, Lustre...
Burzum? Grausamkeit? Thorns? Von? Profanatica? Havohej? Mutiilation? Bathory? Come on these guys seem like Deathcrush is too raw for them
i would have to say Dimmu Borgir for me, and Carach Angren is kicking ass too
I can't believe no one said Bathory. The original & hands down the best Black Metal band ever is Bathory. How the fuck was Bathory over looked. Best Black Metal album ever is Blood Fire Death. Best BM song ever is Dies Irae. Bathory pretty much created the genre, while Venom just coin the phrase Black Metal. Bathory created the sound & turned Black Metal into what it is today. Can't believe that asshole said Cradle of Filth. Give me a fuckin break. Bathory is the highest of Black Metal royalty.
I could not agree more I understand emporer but nonlinear said burzum which really pissed me off and they didint have many good bands themselves hanging around the studio that day
Bathory had more-so transitioned into Viking Metal by Blood Fire Death. Their s/t album though is pure Black Metal.
metalmusician6798 True, but there was still a heavy element of black metal in that album. More so then in Twilight of the Gods & Hammerheart. I always thought Blood Fire Death held the perfect balance between BM & Viking Metal. It's definitely the heaviest Bathory album, in my opinion.
metalmusician6798 Viking Metal is not a genre.............
MetalGamer666 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viking_metal
No one spoke about MAYHEM, BURZUM, IMMORTAL, DARKTHRONE, SACRAMENTUM, DISSECTION, GORGOROTH, GEHENNA, DARK FUNERAL, MARDUK or VINTERLAND? No one?? Only two guys mentioned 1349 and SATYRICON, and the rest of them just forgot these two awesome bands? Are you serious?? And how can they mention CRADLE OF FILTH??? The question was on the "greatest" black metal band, not some "popular" shitty extreme goth metal band which used to be sympho black once!! And the worst thing was that they totally forgot those mighty First Wave Of Black Metal bands like BATHORY, VENOM, HELLHAMMER, CELTIC FROST, MERCYFUL FATE and others. The only "acceptable" thing for me was EMPEROR getting voted several times, thanks to them.
It seems like we, the South Asian Metalheads, know Black Metal better than those Americans. -_-
THOSE Americans. Sorry about them, btw.
I cannot believe not a single man was able to summon the oldest joke in the genre:
"My favorite Black Metal band is Living Color." -- Seth Putnam
..but to answer the question: BURZUM, kids. Burzum is the epitome of Black Metal: genre defining albums, arson, murder, and unrepentant non-conformity.
Okay I like the fact that Inquisition was mentioned along with a few, but what about the others? Darkthrone, Immortal, Enslaved, Dimmu Borgir, Bathory, Burzum,Mayhem? Hell what about Agalloch, Absu, or Dissection seriously guys?
I have to agree with the general consensus on Emperor.
I've always felt like the lo-fi stuff was overrated.
"Ask the hipster"
What a joke.
Can someone tell me the song at the beginning and end please.
Is there State of Fear sticker on that black guitar in the time of 0:53?
The pitchfork of metal presents: why you shouldn't respect the opinions of anyone who talks to us.
† 野箆坊
Dead era Mayhem is the true embodiment of everything black metal
First black metal band I ever heard was emperor, ever since then it's turned me on to bands like watain, satyricon, impaled Nazarene, and early enslaved. I'm from Long Island and I've been listening to black metal since 1995
Call me a dipshit but I have to choose between Wolves in the Throne Room, Deafheaven, Murmur, Mayhem or Panopticon.
all good choices except for deafheaven those guys are dipshits
Well, Sunbather is my second favourite black metal album. The first one is De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.
Pulse Demon
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas does it for me too. That album takes me places.
metalkarloz
That shit destroys me always...
Not huge on Wolves' most recent material in terms of black metal, great ambient album thought. Mayhem and Panopticon kicked ass with their latest albums though
Burzum hands down.
My favorite is a tie between Dark Funeral and Behemoth
Same! Especially after seeing both of them live
Look, Emperor is a perfect band, but they could probably interview more people to get more diverse answers.
inquisition for sure
My top 5:
1. Burzum
2. Emperor
3. Watain
4. Dissection
5. Satyricon
Honorable mentions: Wodensthrone, Bathory, Wolves in the throne room. I'll also mention Agalloch (who I'd probably pick over all the above bands), not exactly pure black metal, but still absolutely amazing
Early Ulver is by far my favourite. Bergtatt, Kveldssanger, Nattens Madrigal. Three classics.
1. Burzum
2. Emperor
3. Satanic Warmaster
4. Satyricon
5. Arcturus
6. Dissection (no they're not melo-death, their logo/name attracted genre confusion)
7. Immortal
8. Summoning
9. Taake
10. Windir
Darkthrone all the way \m/
darkthrone
Agreed, probably the best BM band but Mayhem and Emperor are a close second
Tunaboy45
lol bro
Holy fuck what's the name of the intro song? That shit sounds badass!
I get it: These guys never heard of Dimmu Borgir and Immortal.
WHERE.
THE.
FUCK.
are MARDUK, DARKTHRONE, İMMORTAL and MAYHEM?!?!?! İ know they're classics, every Black Metal fan HAS TO KNOW THEM in my opinion...! But İ would also say, definitely, without any breeze of doubt, that these are THE. FUCKİNG. GREATEST. BM-BANDS OUT THERE...! Even better than Emperor, even if İ like Emperor A LOT. Anyways, STAY FUCKİNG TRUE!!!! \m/666\m/
Marduk -->Shitty
Immortal and Mayhem ---> Overrated
But I have to agree, where the fuck is Darkthrone
+MetalFan 666 Forgetting a major fucking influence? Any convicted murderers that may have slipped your mind?
+romaniahasmetal Marduk shitty... pathetic
The guy who said "no gimmicks just good music" man youre a toolbox. G
The best black metal music ever was made by the supergroup named Zyklon B, but why on earth only 3 songs :(
The answer is Marduk!
I'd say Taake.
1. Mayhem
2. Burzum
3. Darkthrone
4. Striborg
5. Xasthur
Atmosphere is all!!!!!!!!
Grimmness93 I think you misspelled bathory
LOL legend
Mayhem had one great song. Sure it was amazing, but rating the band overall about the next two you list is insulting.
Bathory not getting mentioned is a disgrace
At least someone mentioned Craft.
I’m shocked that no one mentioned Mayhem. To me, Mayhem (when Dead and Euronymous were alive back then, especially the Live in Leipzig session) is the best black metal music in my opinion, it was innovative and something quite unique. Thank goodness Euronymous contacted Attila afterwards cause he is one hell of a vocalist too and his vocals for me became better throughout the years, still can’t get into Maniac’s vocals and idk why 😬😬
Hello Bathory? Hello Immortal? It's funny how these all say Emperor when the norwegian scene back then saw them as a second rank version of Immortal. Not saying Emperor is bad, no theyre great but c''mon if you are going to give an argument why you like them so much atleast come up with something good to say or shut up.
*****
Yes listen to what you want. But if you're getting interviewed about it atleast use some arguments. This makes them see like people who don't know what is going on.
The symphonic parts are overused, plus if you take them away most of the atmosphere in their songs are gone, which is a sign of inconsistent songwritting, even though both Samoth and Ihshan are excellent mucisians. Also, they have just one good album (an excellent one, but still). On the other hand, Anthems is a great fooler, while it is so bombastic, with so much more elaborated symphonic parts and everything, it is all done in such a fasion to try to hide the complete lack of feeling in the songs, which worked out amazingly, after all it is one of the most overpraised albums known in the metal comunity
Emperor were massively influenced by Bathory. Plenty of material out there to show this. They even closed a Wacken set with a Bathory cover.
Who are these people and why are they asked this question... at least somebody mentioned Satyricon and Mayhem briefly... I'm so disappointed.
What happened to Darkthrone?
not their old stuff.
cradle of filth
I'm happy one guy mentioned Cradle of Filth because Cradle of Filth was the gateway band when I was growing up, they probably still are... I mean there's something to be said for being the most popular band in an underground movement.
That dude said Craft. Thats not a poseur answer. But I would be surprised if anyone else in this video listens to black metal even once a week. 😵💫
My favourites would be Anaal Nathrakh, and Inquisition taking a close second. They both sound like nothing else in the world.
Same goes for Blut Aus Nord,Deathspell Omega and Sigh. All these bands are equally insane.
How bout the band that started black metal ? And no it's not Mayhem
Mayhem isn't that good...
Sargeist is really fucking good!
More than one band has started black metal. I'd say Bathory, Celtic Frost and Hellhammer
No Dissection?! :(
None of them mentioned Darkthrone, as many complain here in the comments. But as far as i read into the comments here, nobody mentions Taake.
Just wtf people...
The true Mayhem? C'mon guys show some respect
emperor is great but there is so much better shit out there
