    As a child of the sixties, I was sure the 21st Century would bring flying cars, underwater cities, and colonies on Mars. I’m still waiting for these, but the greatest delight is the one I never expected-to follow the adventures of an appealing couple through the wonders of our simple home planet, buoyed by age-old nautical skills and undreamed-of new technologies. Sail on!

    Great episode. It struck me at the end, when you did that exterior shot of Uma at the dock, 6 years ago that was a $3000 junker with a floppy keel, dead deisel, and blue topdeck. Now, it’s one of the best loved, modern, electric sailboats in the world. Well done.

      @AndrewSmith-cd5zf 3 роки тому +15

      Batteries dont regenerate either - they need to be filled (exactly the same as diesel tanks) - ie there is no magic energy - however the kit they have is still fit for purpose under most conditions :-)

    Having lived in Alaska Solar has some issues, especially with mountains around. Make some adjustable solar racks, perhaps more solar panels on racks, double stacked solar panel racks that can be extended out from beneath other panels as needed, flexible solar panels stored away that can be tied up and angled with line or poles that can be added and used as needed. In the winter time forget solar in the land with 24 hour darkness. Around Anchorage it was 4 hours light in winter and about 20 hours of daylight in summer. Add in mountains and you may get daylight but no direct sunshine. I think all solar would work in the summer but with some prep work planning. You all are doing great and learning as you go and that is awesome.

    Dan, back in the 1950's my dad had a 40' salmon trawler on the Oregon coast. The boat had a 371 diesel in it but he had a way of charging the batteries if they were too low to start the engine. He bought a 3hp Briggs & Stratton that he had mounted on a piece of plywood that powered a car generator. It worked like a charm. I'm not sure how modern generators(Honda 2000) would compare but it may be something that could be looked into.
    Also, being that you two are very creative, it would be interesting to see if you could make a quick change generator mount for your outboard motor. That way you could charge your batteries while the dingy is pushing you while tied to the side of the boat. (:>)

      Another good way to lose an outboard overboard. Since they use the dink to push so seldom, I think what they have there is well taken care of, especially if they have an alternative method of charging for those high latitude cruises, because using the outboard whether on Coco or directly on Uma will be even less common.

    Hey Dan, shorely with your talents you could rig up a generator that attaches to the prop of your dinghy outboard.
    Otherwise I have a flashlight that is powered by shaking it that I could send to you.
    If all else fails Kika could turn her bright smile on the solar panels and the batteries would be charged in no time.

    Kiki bombing around on Koko...LOL. I enjoy watching you two in these waters, rarely anyone goes as far north in any sailboat as you two and in an electrical powered sailboat at that, GREAT job by both of you and you are a true team, sharing the tasks. I imagine if you were sailing on the electric boat you tested in Croatia, you would be charging your batteries even in a light breeze. This kind of sailing strikes me as true sailing, choosing to go slow and gentle instead of starting up an engine and burning a fuel to only get to the next place faster...makes more sense to float, better for the soul. By the way the roller that Kiki's dad made for your anchor looks like it's doing a champion job, cleaner than a lot of others that I watch. Gentle waves and pleasant winds to you both. Keep up the great work.

    Would regenerating energy with the prop while anchored in a tidal stream be a realistic option?

    • @florentinvonfrankenberg7102
      @florentinvonfrankenberg7102 3 роки тому

      How much is a strong tide? 3 knots? You can check some specs on the servoprop system they use but I don't think they'd get a ton of power from it. How long will the tide be that strong for? I don't know these things, but I think tides offer only a fraction of the power potential of sailing and regen.

      Yes. It is certainly possible to drop a counter rotating prop/generator into a tidal flow. I made a proof of concept one several decades ago. Size and fouling was a problem, but those issues should be do-able/solvable. Water based 'generators' beat wind beat solar, but with water/wind you need to 'anchor'. Always have an emergency geny, or hydrogen/methanol fuel-cell.
