You don't have to remain a non-sailor 😊 come join in on the fun and freedom! Call your local marina and ask about abandoned boats and begin studying and looking at boats closely and before you know it you'll be on the water sailing.

Wow - THIS is why we’ve been following your journey for years. While we recognize that you have a highly diverse group of viewers with varied interests and that each episode is fantastic in it’s own way, your ability to clearly articulate and explain complex systems in a viewer-friendly manner is something we enjoy and benefit from in sailing our own boat. Enjoy sailing the Med - I know we do!

Hello. Following you for quite some time. Just to add into the Gennaker/Spinnaker conundrum...
    • Genoa - A head sail where the foot of the sail is longer than the distance from the mast to the bottom forestay connection.
    • Jib Sail - A head sail where the foot of the sail is shorter than the distance from where the mast sits on the deck to the bottom forestay connection.
    • A spinnaker is used for deep broad reaches through direct downwind angles. It blows way out the front of the boat and uses a pole to windward to stabilize it. The Spinnaker is flying much higher and out front for more down wind tacks.
    • A gennaker is sometimes called an asymmetric spinnaker. The Gennaker is connected low to the bow sprit in much the same way as a genoa sail. The gennaker is a close cousin to the genoa and spinnaker. It is more like a genoa but is made of lighter material, poofs out more like a spinnaker and is only capable of sailing up to about 80 degrees off the wind.

I know you weren't selling anything BUT, . . . I'm sold on your sail inventory Step! : - ) I've got 4 sails for my P2-20 but have not set up my spinnaker yet. I made it out of an actual parachute but it is triangular. I also made my genoa out of larger old main sail for another boat. My jib and main sail came with the boat. I'm happy that my sailboat wasn't used much (it was made in 12/72) because the sails that came with it are not worn out yet. However, if I had the money, I think I would have a new set made up.

This is why I absolutely love, love, LOVE your videos...love em, love em, love em!! You two go into just miniscule detail of your vessel fantastic UMA...love, love, LOVE her name in quiet BOLD grey letters from the top to the base, hugging the mast. You two put so much thought and joy into all your videos without drama and the T and A that others feel the need for, not sure if they do that for the viewer numbers or as an ego stroke....doesn't matter, I'm talking about you three Kika, UMA and Dan (my fellow Canuck, just a note Dan, I put the ladies first as all us well heeled Canucks tend to do...well most of us...lol). What I truly want to say is that I always feel good after one of your videos, even the ones that tell us that it's not always sunshine and rainbows, like Kika's video of walking around waiting for Dan to do his licence business back in BC. Kika pointed out that doing the video filming by herself was a bit tricky when she wanted to be seen walking past a view point to get the scenery in the shot and how some people almost arm wrestled her for her camera when they thought it was 'free'. But I was glad that they had the brains to know that she's no lady to be tested (all that blood and bone, she'd have to wedge out from between her knuckles and toe knuckles....ewwwww, I'm shuddering just imagining that...I just fainted, I'm back). Every video you make are primo workmanship...workwomanship. You leave with the warm fuzzies every time, Keep up the GREAT work you three.🥰🥰🥰

You guys remind me of my Dad. We live just outside of Buffalo, NY. and dad would sail from the dock in Erie Bason Marnia, out to Lake Erie and back, NEVER used a motor nor paddles to do this. Infact when the boat launch was changed (the deep ramp was removed) and, now we had to use a crane to launch the boat this was in the Buffalo River where the buildings blocked the wind. It took us hours to install and start the outboard motor Why? Dad never used them before. The boat had a 3-foot fixed keel on it and that's why a crane was needed.

One of the reasons I follow your channel is because you're true sailors... a rare thing in this age of the modern diesel engine. I don't know if you follow them, but Matt and Amy on Sailing Yacht Florence are another couple who give off the same vibe of choosing to sail whenever possible.
It's funny that many people think of the diesel engine as being the safety back up... I would argue that thinking is wrong. I have had to sail into a pen or onto a mooring in a boat because of an engine issue way more times than I have ever had to motor in due to a sail issue. Having the spare set as you do makes absolute sense.

Great tutorial on Uma's Propulsion system It explains a lot of the mechanics and physics of this ancient form of a very inexpensive way of transport Then again you lost me after Mainsail but I still stayed for the full lecture.
When I watch SV Delos Brian is always trouble shooting a problem , repairing the problem or jury rigging a solution to get them by. On Uma you throw up another sail, change coarse and heading and prepare another meal . L
I do like your solution a lot better but then again the crew on Delos do where a lot less clothes which explains my reason d'etre but then again I am older and i find pleasures that are beyond explanations DO KEEP UP TEH GOOD WORK . And as a Canadian It give me greater pleasure to see what you two are doing and doing it so well Merci

When I upgraded to a J/42, it came with a Tides Marine SailTrack. You hang out with cruisers, so you have probably seen them before. There are no ball bearings, but the main drops instantly, and I can reef the main downwind. It will likely install directly into your existing track. Something to think about for the future.

Advise you to use the storm jib whenyou are going upving in more than 28 knots, the boat will be more balanced and feel safer. Also in heavy downwind it can be used as your only sail, gives good control of the boat and not to high speed.

An added benefit is that familiarity should preferably be gained before it is needed. It's one thing hoisting it tied to a dock, but the sailors need to establish how to hoist and trim it in strong winds, and there may not even be suitable locations to sheet it to.
It's critical that the sheeting angle be correct because flogging is not sustainable.

My first sailboat didn't have roller furling, so I had a huge number of jibs and genoas that I had to go up to the bow and change out in whatever conditions caused the desire to change, so on the second boat I made sure it had a roller furler, I did not miss going up to the bow anymore and occasionally achieving weightlessness and getting salty.
Both of my boats have had sloop rigs and I was interested in the cutter rig that my uncles boat had, until recently I found out about solent rigs that have become popular lately and that looks like what you have now with the two head stays close together. I like the flexibility it gives

Also love the reference to the almost religious debate on what sails are/should be called - I've been around since the 70's, so it's great to gain clarity on some of the newer references! I'm afraid that I still call a boomvang a kicking strap though! Another super episode - many thanks from the UK (as you can probably tell from the kicking strap comment!).

Really love how informative and clear you guys are. This is a great way to learn and or be reminded about the names of things and how they work on a sailboat. Its been a few years since I was on a boat, and grateful for the refresher course! Bravo and Blessings to you both. If you are ever in La Rochelle, let me know.

Really enjoy that--this far into your channel--you are still doing very basic informational stuff like this. It's so useful to novice sailors. Much appreciated!

I enjoyed this episode a lot. I had wished you talked more sailing in your videos, so I could learn more. A masterclass on trimming would be outstanding. I like to understand how things work, and would love your explanations on trimming. Please make one of these.

Y’all do such a good job as you explain the technology of sailing specific to Uma. So many things us non-sailors do not understand. You are impressive in the level of knowledge you share so generously! Happy and safe sailing!

Very good !!! As an "old" salt, since 1961, I very much appreciate you explanations of you sail inventory. Never mentioned a "BLOOPER", a light air sail used with a jib.
We do very much enjoy all your vids. Keep it up. Best wishes to you both from Powell River, BC. From Warlord our Panda 40, Cheers.

Great content. Good explanation. You have a gift of making complex topics easy to understand and showing the sail changes is a huge bonus. Can never get enough of your drone footage. Sailboats are so beautiful under sail. All sailboats.
