In addition to the workmanship in this episode, one has to take a moment to appreciate just how uncluttered and clean Uma looks at 16:53, esp compared to the other boats. Only white deck, grey fabric and the solar panels. Elegant.
You guys are crazy! I just hauled out for 2 weeks. Did bottom paint, barrier coat on the keel, new cutlass bearing, new depth/speed transducer and thru-hull, replaced the bilge thru-hull, and repaired a cracked rudder. It was exhausting, but the best feeling in the world to get 2 knots more speed on the way home than I've had before in her. Good luck with your haul-out and can't wait to see her floating again!
First of all I see you’re celebrating a hard week ahead with CARONA BEER, I hope that antidote does it’s job!!! Secondly, both of you are real engineers and it’s FUN seeing how throughly y’all have researched your projects, analyzed data, preplanned them and work together to accomplish them. Dan, your skills in almost exacting work is a talent. The motor mounts you took out appeared so professional that they could have been factory installed and tone new one is the same. I’m loving this episode excited to see its progress. You and Kika are a great couple with each one a worthy help mate and whether legally married or not are a prime example of God’s purpose in putting couples together. Thanks for putting this on line for all to see!!! You have an amazing vessel!!!
It's so nice to see.....an engine with no oil on the deck....no spills.....no steam or heat rising up into the cabin. Love the journey you both are on.
@@SailingUma True. And that'd be fine for most people going in and out of marinas. But, for example, we sailed from BC to SF and once had to motor 240 miles (37 hours) with up to 10' seas. We would have needed a lot of batteries.
OSHA, OSHA OSHA: Dan I saw you wearing a respirator when grinding out the old motor mounts, I guess to avoid glass fibers and dust. However, the respirator had black banded filters, these filter are good for Organic Vapors, filters had dust covers which it is good for the glass fibers. Then when you where glassing the new base you weren't wearing the respirator, and you should. Congratulations on the new motor, Diane and Susan. So happy for you guys. As an EV fan I'm geeking out on the upgrade and can't wait to watch the process and results. I love that you found a home for the old motor and will help someone else with their conversion. And regen is AWESOME!! I love watching my EV car's range increase when going downhill.

Wonderful story today! Remember you said it was very lucky with the new motor. I think it is your story and the people you reach that you get offers because you two are trying to do things right and with a smile to boot. Thanks for sharing another adventure with all of us.

Biggest problem with Regen is the prop... You need much smaller pitch (ideally more area) to regen than to propel. If you have a variable pitch propeller, than you are gold. Full electric install (opposed to regen from a normally ICE driven boat) have the advantage because of the flexibility of the electric motor to work on a broader rpm range (aka use a smaller pitch propeller and increase motor rpm), but it comes at the price of decreased efficiency while propelling the boat forward. I hope you got the variable pitch one (I'm 99% sure I know the boat this is coming from, saw it on the O'Kellys channel). Anyhow it will be very interesting to see the practical results. Best of luck. Cheers
Used to be an assistant boat builder, mostly glass fibre/epoxy racing boats. And I have to say I am quite impressed with your skills, personally I would use a lot more addetatives like silica, wool and be more keen on using the appropriate glass fibre weave and thickness or even carbon and Kevlar where appropriate but I don't think it would make that much difference. Good job guys, it is a pleasure to watch you work!
Thanks for the information, when I first started following you guys (a couple of weeks ago) I was confused on how you would recharge the batteries with those 2 little solar panels! Now I understand that your batteries are somehow recharged from sailing!!! I guess I’ll keep watching to find out how!
Great news with the motor! When it comes to regenerative propeller, as I was watching I was just about to recommend to you a local Göteborg Swedish company called GreenStar Marine AB and then you revealed the news. Fantastic. I look forward to seeing what sort of regenerative numbers you manage with the ocean volt system. 🤓 Love the updates! . . Shoot me a PM if you decide to sail to Sweden, have connections.
I love watching you two work. It is educational and sometimes you come up solutions to problems or repairs I would never have thought of. Can't wait to see the new motor and how it performs. Keep smiling and sail on.
That's awesome that you are getting a motor from Top Secret. I remember watching the O'Kellys 2 part series on that catamaran, and I even remember Rean, the owner, talking about how the 4 motors were completely overkill. That boat of his is incredible. Best of luck on the install. I'm sure it will be a night and day difference.
Man, I really like watching you guys. You are a great team. Hope you're doing well. I drive EVs and was thinking about the concept of getting an electric motor in a sail boat, then stumbled across your video. Great info. Thanks.
What an inspiration - you two make a formidable team and I’ve watched you nervously, gasped for air with you - and laughed with you. You are brilliant. Oh - the boat is okay too :).
Oh, to be young, ambitious, energetic, and quite both creative and talented. I hope that you realize even bigger dreams, which I am sure that you will. Bravo!
I so admire your handi-ness, Dan. I'm not bad for an academic (I can change light bulb and a few other things), but am in awe with what you and Kika do!
I've been staring at this Prius transmission going "I bet that would make a good sailboat motor". It's a liquid-cooled, permeate magnet, brushless dc motor. It's actually 2 motors in one housing with a planetary gear system in between. If you're not familiar, a planetary gear system has three "shafts" and essentially requires two inputs and one output. (or other things) You would use the built-in parking brake to disable one shaft. Connect the boat where the Prius motor would usually connect. It ends up being a reliable and sealed, system with parts all over the world.
But a high voltage one still, so safety will also be an issue like their comment on the tesla drive unit. Allthough on not sure what exactly the Prius voltage is.
Well Well Well Dan and Kika, I am so happy for you guys. Remember when we sailed into Saba at night and only had a little bit of electric engine time? Now we can circle the moorings, be indecisive and go for a cruise before we hunker down. Excellent job my friends, can't wait to come and see it in real life. Stef
Where did you get the info that Top Secret was going to partly switch back to diesel? In the vid, they say he realized he didn't need four oceanvolt motors and he would have plenty of power with two.
@@clinewb Nick mentioned this in one of their vids, when He talked about what they planned to Do this year. But since his eye Problems they did not go south but back to the US. So I am not Sure if we will See an other Top Secret boat Tour vid this year.
You folks are awesome ! You deserve success! im goin electric with this old girl in my thumbnail photo. its got two v/8 mercruisers and i dont desire fast. they are cool but smell and you know the maintenance. stuff goes bad even if it's not used. just coastal cruising and hillsborough river. solar and a new custom hardtop coming too. Good luck to you on the rest of the project.
I had a completely different approach. I am just in the process of rebuilding my 1975 'tractor' engine because they were built so well back then and wanted to keep it. With the rebuild I should get at least another 20 years of life and with cans on deck we have a range of 500NM (which we need as we are on our way to Panana). We view having reliable driving power as the single most important safety issue - you cannot always rely on wind and currents can take you onto the rocks and/or across shipping lanes. Most boats down here have solar but in the tropics there are too many cloudy days for it to be a primary source even for house power (let alone driving) so have a gasoline generator to top up the batteries when necessary. Again, that is also a safety issue - you need to ensure your navigation and VHF are always available.
Ok working in the Damen boat yard we had levels which you could set and we take the reading from the foot well of the doors so one for Port to STB and one for bow to stern ok that's is when you are on the slip
Hey Dan, We are looking at a Pearson 365 but have a question for you. I am 6'1, is the V berth large enough for my height? Been with you guys since "Don't buy a couch and am proud of you guys and you do GT proud.
Not sure about the 365. But everything on our boat is 6'4" Head room and berths. Hope that helps. But definitely get onboard one before making a decision. We looked at one when looking for Uma, love the layout, but it was out of our price range.
My new favourite channel. I've been wanting to buy a used SB with a dud diesel for about 5 years now. Knowing that electric is perfect for just picking up a mooring or motoring out of a channel. Brilliant. I think for simplicity though it will be a DC permanent magnet motor but with enough thrust to push the boat to hull speed. Subbed.
Sick! I have admired Top Secret for a long time. More and more boat manufacturers are going electric. My boat will be too. Allready have a electric dingy.
I got rid of my Westerbeke 20 B Two's for an electric refit in a Catalac 9m cat. Two 5.5kw brushless motors on 2 200ah 48v LiPo4 batteries. Finally finishing up. You guys have been an inspiration. And big ups to Dan and his skills. 👊 (Kika too❤................... but that Dan tho. )
Hello to you all the way over the Tamar, from us in Cornwall (jam first, don't ask). Glad you're enjoying the British Spring weather. My boatyard is closed - it's North of Fowey, so I'm stuck at home and unable to work (manual osteopath) for the foreseeable. It's great to be able to see your videos though. Besides being sailors you two must be electrical engineers and scientists. May I add educators learned so much from your channel. The best sailor channel on the tube.

skippy One if your a patron then your on daily updates...I'm too cheap, actually my boat loves my money more than my ex... :(. When a friend gives you a " free" boat; question your friendship...lol
Ron Madewell Hi Ron, no not a patron, like you I have other priorities closer to home. Once thing I would say though is this channel only got where it is with subscribers. All patrons are and started as subscribers. YT don't count patron numbers only web traffic. advertisers are not interested in patrons just viewers. Perhaps this site has reached the point it thinks it can survive alone ... we will see! the next time they post if it is just a old rancid scrap for the scavenging dogs like us then I will switch off. just wondering how much they raise each month? Enough to fund the life we can only dream of!
@@skippyone2769 I agree, if they're allowed to stay on Uma than there will be some fresh vids. As you say, we will see hopefully they are able to pull it out of the bag. I do enjoy their content. Cheers
This is exciting! In my mind I’m looking at the bottom stern of your boat and trying to think what it will look like with a sail drive and how much “regular” drive stuff gets removed and/ or glasses over. Ideally you’d want a nice smooth bottom (don’t we all???) but there’s stuff in the way where the traditional prop shaft exits the boat. Although, I’m just seeing your bottom now and it looks pretty clean, only a bit f a bump fro the prop shaft. Really looking forward to seeing your conversion and then the tests and then your overall impressions. Have a great time! For those of us sitting at home, we really look forward to your videos.
Worked at ATT and they Use 48vdv battery packs for backup power! Phone lines run at 48vdv! And there are tons of old Inverters that turn 48vdv to 220vac very cheap so you could use an induction motor that would also charge the 48vdv battery bank

Bravo!
Well said!

Wow! Hmmmm.....
Your comment has really got my head turning, now. A Prius drive🤔🤫😱🧐🤓😎🤩😍⛵️
But a high voltage one still, so safety will also be an issue like their comment on the tesla drive unit. Allthough on not sure what exactly the Prius voltage is.
Electricity is electricity. Death by 12v is worse than 40+v. At least the higher, the more efficient you'll die.
Stef
Famous last words: “we’re just going around the corner”
Well done.
Corona Beer, nice touch.
Corona... nowadays this word does not bring good feelings.
Sabre Tom , well remembered, the only place the virus is not .

I'd guess both Uma & La Vaga are (silently) sponsored by Corona. I'd take that sponsorship in a NY minute as well! Endless beer money ftw lol
Love seeing all the systems and hard work you guys have done/are doing. It's Awsomeness!
Top Secret is a cool boat. Nick O'Kelly did a wonderful vid about this boat. Your luck, that Reon decided to partly switch back to Diesel.
Great work guys, my favorite of all of your videos to date. Cheers to love, cool.
WOW! So cool about the motor. You guys have a charmed life...so blessed!
For a couple of newly-graduated architects, I'd say they've done miracles in the field of fluid dynamics.
I am in such an awe of what you two can do of repair and upgrade. I have seen it all and love your energy. Thank you.❤️❤️❤️
I had a completely different approach.
Dan, your level of expertise and/or workmanship is absolutely amazing👍🏽
Jimmy Stewart that’s why Uma is BETTER than new!!
Watching a new episode as soon as it’s published is like eating the first cookie when the tray is out of the oven.
Anxious to see it working tbank for sharing your experiences
I mean thanks for sharing your experience
Your knowledge of electrics really is impressive. That in itself is saving you lots of bucks. Happy days
14:25 how you make sure it’s level in a boat ? You guys are awesome. keep being you.
That’s a really easy one, take any random angle, sooner or later, it’ll be leveled :)
Ok working in the Damen boat yard we had levels which you could set and we take the reading from the foot well of the doors so one for Port to STB and one for bow to stern ok that's is when you are on the slip
@@milkoberben2963 how is sit on the water has little to do with sitting on the ground trailer, blocking, 🖐
@@theoldman8877 the slip is actually on the hard :-)
All i can say is that you guys do an amazing job ! Cheers and stay safe !
You guys are so blessed to confidently do all that yourselves.
Rock n Roll baby, Oceanvolt it THE way to go.
Very cool video with some serious modifications to your electric power there! You got it going on that's pretty clear guys!!!!
Good luck with the project and stay safe in these challenging times.
I don't think people can appreciate the commitment it takes just to maintain a boat..... just subscribed and i don't do that very often..lol thanks!
Battle born batteries are absolutely incredible!
World class editing, super professional production! Your journey is a real pleasure to follow.
I’m finally getting videos that are recent i swear I’ve watch more of your old 2plus years ago this ones new hellooooo y’all
I got rid of my Westerbeke 20 B Two's for an electric refit in a Catalac 9m cat. Two 5.5kw brushless motors on 2 200ah 48v LiPo4 batteries. Finally finishing up. You guys have been an inspiration. And big ups to Dan and his skills. 👊 (Kika too❤................... but that Dan tho. )
What a beautiful couple, I wish you a beautiful life together👍
Hello to you all the way over the Tamar, from us in Cornwall (jam first, don't ask). Glad you're enjoying the British Spring weather. My boatyard is closed - it's North of Fowey, so I'm stuck at home and unable to work (manual osteopath) for the foreseeable. It's great to be able to see your videos though. Please keep them coming. xxxx
Dear Brussel and Sprout, : )
Looking forward to this new install. Work safe and smart.
Oh BTW Corona Beer? Cheeky!
Corona beer? Don't forget the lime!!
Besides being sailors you two must be electrical engineers and scientists. May I add educators learned so much from your channel. The best sailor channel on the tube.
this must be weeks old!
All the marinas in UK are on lockdown not haul outs or ins for the foreseeable!
Are you still living onboard or have you found shore based accommodation?
skippy One if your a patron then your on daily updates...I'm too cheap, actually my boat loves my money more than my ex...
Cheers
Uma is such a pretty boat. And you two are the best designers/engineers/caretakers of her. Super excited to see this electric upgrade process.
