- In a 1991 NFL week 12 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins, with the Redskins up 34-14, they scored a garbage time touchdown to extend the lead and pour salt in the wounds. Gibbs is one of the classiest coaches I have ever seen. I remember him having his QB kneel on the ball rather than running up the score in a blowout game.
He was told by a reporter once, "there's no such thing as 'running up the score' on the professional level" Gibbs said "sure there is"
He did that up 45-0 vs Detroit in week 1 in 1991. I was there.

Chuck Noll wasn't upset that the Redskins scored a touchdown. He was undoubtedly upset that his defense let a scrub QB throw a 40-yard TD pass to a wide-open receiver when the Redskins weren't even trying to get a touchdown.
This was a Steelers problem, not a Redskins problem.
Joe Gibbs has always been a great coach but an even better person. Also, that 1991 Redskins team is on the Mount Rushmore of greatest teams ever.
Victims of their own humility: one of the biggest reasons they're so criminally overlooked is that none of the players has made it their post-football life's work to tell anyone within earshot how great they were.
That was a great Washington team; excellent players with whom many peaked at the same time. That team had one goal and achieved it, I have no problem talking about or up the laudable exploits of the 1991 NFL Champion.

@@teen_laqueefa Bills made their own luck (which turned out to be none) by not paying enough attention to that Super Bowl 26 game, treating it more like Westlemania and coming off like fools. That could've been a fun game, but the real Bills didn't show up for the game.
That one handed catch by Gary Clark in this game is one of the best I've ever seen. Wish it was referenced more.

Can't blame a player for doing what he'd trained to do. Sanders probably read the coverage & ran the route without thinking "I'm to run the post ..." he just read & ran. In today's game Sanders could slide; back then, wasn't targeting still in play? Back then, if Sanders had gone down people would be wondering if Wash. was point shaving.

as a steelers fan joe gibbs is a class act he would never run up the score i think thats one of the reasons the media doesnt really talk about him or chuck noll they both had dominate nfl history breaking offenses in their coaching careers and never really ran up scores on anyone
In “The Game Behind the Game” Terry O’Neil said Joe Gibbs was a religious man who rarely cursed. This seemed like an extension of his personality.
I remember Gibbs once having his team take a knee at the 1 to make sure they didn’t score another TD in the closing seconds against Detroit. He never wanted to unnecessarily run the score up on anyone.
Gibbs is a real man of dignity.

That's how you handle a situation. He didn't mean for his team to score, just get the first down...but they did score. Now, own your behavior,...and as Noll said, there was nothing to apologize for. But once you own your behavior, let the opposing team know it, then it's done....running up a score is never a good idea or rubbing salt in the wound when up big (ask the Suns about that, scoring with 5 seconds to play against the Mavs up 30 in Game 5)--It gives teams motivation to play better and really get up for the next game psychologically. Gibbs handled this with great class and integrity--Exactly how you do it when things don't go as planned

Perhaps, but last I checked, it's still your opponent's responsibility to stop you from scoring (and running up the score). If I was coaching such a game, I'd be like, hey, it's not our problem you guys can't stop us.
The 91 redskins were one of the best teams ever assembled.
One offense were had 3 receivers who had 1000 yd season our best receiver Clark was better then a HOF Art Monk
In a fair universe our entire OL should have been in the HOF the worse one was Shelreth who went on to play in 2 more SB with the Broncos the back RB Riggs other than fumbles was better than the starter Byner what was one of the best rb in Cleveland history and Ricky Irvins another 1000 yd rb was the 3rd string
the punt return guy and kicker were some of the best in NFL history
Marshall Collins and Coleman could all blitz cover and had range the backup MLB Goveia was better than the starter Millen
Besides HOF Mann Stokes and Geathers were awesome as well
and Darrell Green was locking down the best WR one vs one
The reason the cowboys created that dynasty was they knew they had to play Washington and had to overload their team
I think it's always a good idea to form the best team possible. With that Cowboys team though, the depth players they lost really never play d as well as they did for the Cowboys.

The Hogs were the best OL of all time. The '91 Redskins are the one team in the last 40 years that I think could have hung with the '85 Bears night-in, night-out, because if any OL in history could have handled that rush, it was the '91 Skins. I've always wanted someone to ask Wilber Marshall which team he thought was better.

I would have guessed the most bizarre thing joe Gibbs did was the double time out that cost the redskins the sean Taylor memorial game vs the bills.
I have to admit, as an Australian I find this peculiarity in American sport of not "running up the score" to be fascinating especially as It only seems to apply in random situations. Win a Super Bowl 46-10, 55-10, 43-8 nobody says shit but win a regular season game 41-14 and it's scandalous. Bizarre.
It's not good in any situation because it displays poor sportsmanship. It's just that in a situation like, say, a Super Bowl victory I think it tends to get overshadowed by the magnitude of the victory.
And it's not just any blowout victory that displays poor sportsmanship. It's situations where it's obvious one side is _going_ to win, but they just needlessly and gratuitously do things to run up the score that don't need to be done simply to secure the victory.
It's like, "Yeah, I know I'm going to win anyway, but I'm going to do things like e.g. score the touchdown instead of kneeling to run out the clock, or keep my starters in the game to hopefully continue running the score up instead of giving my subs some experience just cuz I can (and also I don't like you)" -- that kinda thing.
Sometimes a blowout just can’t be helped. I remember in college when we were playing Maryland and Coach Johnson put in the underclassmen. The freshman team scored three touchdowns. We were playing them in College Park and not the Orange Bowl.
I remember this game. I think this was the turning point where people knew Chuck Noll’s career was over. What a blow out this game was!
Exact same thing happened when I was in middle school. We were up 20-6 with seven seconds left. Coach told our QB to run whatever play he wished (we only had about four plays at the time). Our TE asked for the ball and broke about four tackles for a 50+ yd TD. He never tried that hard at any other point that year. Coach had to apologize to the other coach in the handshake line.
I saw a high school game about 20 years ago where one team had a 64-6 lead and the other team was punting, and they were so inept they punted into the back of one of their own linemen. So the team with the 64 had the ball on the 17-yard line and didn't want any more points. They stuck an offensive lineman in at running back, ran a dive play, and son of a gun if he didn't make a 17-yard TD run to make it 70-6. The fans of the team that lost sent several letters to me as the editor of the hometown paper of the winning team, complaining about bad sportsmanship. It wasn't bad sportsmanship, it was their team that quit.
@@johncate9541 I would say them already trailing 64-6 makes their complaining look ridiculous. BTW my alma mater once beat an NAIA school 97-7, I kid you not. Their only score was on a kick return. The REALLY sad part is that they spent at least the last half of the 4th trying not to score.

I remember watching this game with my father. He had seen a Steeler curse loudly "you F@$$" after this play and he laughed his ass off. No wonder Gibbs called off the dogs after this play.

I remember this game. The next day at school a friend asked what I thought of the Steelers that day and I said something like “Redskins are the best team so it’s hard to get mad at how they played.”

If you leave the starters in and try to run up the score, that would be somewhat classless. But if one team puts in the backups and still can’t be stopped, that’s 100% on the losing team.
in an SI article in 1991; looking back on the Redskins offensive capability during Superbowl XXII, Doug Williams was qouted at saying that "60 points was not out of reach; but we went conservative during the 2nd half because (Joe) Gibbs and (Broncos Coach) Dan Reeves were friends".

There is no such thing as ‘running up’ the score in a professional game. Both teams are paid and both teams are expected to play their best at all times.
The next year, Joe Gibbs began shifting his focus from Football to NASCAR as he would establish Joe Gibbs Racing.
I have never had a problem with a situation like this. 1. You give the receiver an option route, and he runs it the way it's practiced. No issue in it. 2. It's the defense's job to stop the offense from scoring. If you don't want to be routed then play better.
Game officiated by Alfred Hitchcock (123 Tom White). That was according to Dennis Miller on a 2000 MNF game.
Joe Gibbs won 3 titles with 3 different QBS none of whom was a franchise quarterback - IMO he is the greatest head coach in the history of the NFL
Disagree there, Theismann was a pretty good QB whose numbers compare favorably with others from that era that are in the HOF.

@@schaperart He was toward the end of his career and playing badly in 85 when LT ended it for him on that Monday night. If his coaches prior to Gibbs used him right he would probably be in the HOF. Raiders SB when he 💩 himself hurt him too as far as HOF consideration.
I guess they changed the rules and they can't wear the single bar anymore, him and Moseley both did.

I can't stand Washington. Me being an Eagles fan but Joe Gibbs is/was one the most classy & best Head Coaches in NFL history. If it was my team he cooked, his apology is enough. (Yes, Gibbs' teams cooked the Eagles many times. Lol)
I can't blame Sanders and Rutledge for scoring there. Pittsburgh's D was uncharacteristically bad that season, so it has the most fault there IMO.
I’ve seen Mike Ditka apologize to Tom Landry after a game in the 1985 season when the Bears beat the Cowboys in Dallas 40-0.
If anything I blame Noll for not going for it on 4th down the previous series. IDC if it's 4th and 21, you at least TRY. He wound up getting the same result as if he'd gone for it and failed.

That was during the same season that the Detroit Lions won their only playoff game over the last 60 years. After the Lions destroyed the Cowboys in the divisional round, they got destroyed at Washington, a team they have never in their history beat on the road, in the conference title game. After that season, the Cowboys would win three of the next four Super Bowls.
The *Redskins* 19-game win streak over the Lions from '68-99 (including playoffs) was the longest win streak by any NFL team over a non-divisional opponent, and the second longest win streak over an opponent period. And it gets worse. When the Lions finally ended the streak in '99 they...lost to the *Redskins* in the playoffs!

@@DolFan316 I knew not that long ago the Lions never won in Washington, but I guess that streak ended and I didn't notice. Plus that 1991 Lions team won a regular season game in Green Bay, and didn't get their next win there until 24 years later.
GIBBS did do anything wrong here. HE PUT in the Backup QB in the game. THAT'S how good that team was. EVEN the backup could have started for other teams, which happened in Frre Agency a few years later.
Gibbs' teams were either great or mediocre. Back then we were either contenders or trash. Now we're just trash.
That's how the great coaches roll. Look at the great coaches today like Bilichick, Harbaugh, and Reid. A bad year for the Patriots, Ravens, or Chiefs means they were still playoff contenders until the last few weeks of the season.
Not necessarily. Yes, the Redskins had a down season in 1988 after winning the Super Bowl the season before. And even then, they still had a chance until they lost 5 of their last 6.
Joe Gibbs' teams have always been competitive. He didn't always have the most talented players. But he and his coaching staff always gave the players he had a chance to be successful.

Gibbs is the #GOAT in my book. He never had a HOF quarterback - it wouldn’t have been fair. Belichick is sub .500 and has one playoff win without Brady. Landry had a HOFQB in Staubach. Lombardi had Starr. Shula had Unitas, Griese, and Marino. Noll had Bradshaw. Walsh had Montana and Young. Jimmy Johnson had Aikman. Even Paul Brown had Otto Graham. All of those quarterbacks are in Canton. Gibbs won 3 SB’s with 3 different QB’s and RB’s when they mattered more, and won playoff games with five different quarterbacks. None of his QB’s are close to the HOF. He even beat Landry in Texas Stadium with all scabs while Tom had his starting QB and HOFers playing for Dallas. Add his NASCAR achievements to the resume and you could argue he’s the greatest winner in the history of American sports.
Gibbs inherited a team with most of its first day draft picks already spent. Monk and Green are the only first round picks I can think of that Gibbs had to work with in those 10 years. His first Super Bowl team were a bunch of rejects no one else wanted

Joe Gibbs is a Hall of Famer in two different sports: in football as a coach and in NASCAR as a team owner
Edit: also Joe Gibbs is a bit of a tragic figure as both his sons: JD and Coy passed away, with Coy passing away in his sleep just a few hours after his son, Joe's grandson, Ty Gibbs won the Xfinity Series championship and a few hours before Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell competed for the NASCAR Cup Series championship (which ended up being won by former JGR driver Joey Logano)
When John Madden had a similar game in 1969 against the Houston Oilers he didn't say anything to his team at halftime what could you say when you are up 57 to 0 ?

Lost on all this is the incredible play of the greatest O line in NFL history - the HOGS - in that play people only see the TD but look at the hogs just pushing people around like they were ragdolls, Rutledge had all day to pass, felt no pressure at all

Gibbs was one of the greatest and classiest coaches of all time and the fact that Noll even said don't worry about it, when it came to that touchdown after Gibbs apologized to him shows how much Gibbs was respected.
Chuck Noll probably said this to Gibbs because he himself knows what it’s like to coach a team that is just too good in all facets of the game. Those 70’s Steelers were the real deal back then winning those four Super Bowls.

I've noticed in all your videos about the Redskins, that you never actually say the word "Redskins" in your commentary. I understand why you don't, but I've always been a firm believer that in sports if a team was called a certain name, people should just go ahead and say that name for historical purposes. For almost a century, Washington's team was called the Redskins, regardless of how anyone feels about that. I suppose it's just one of those things that you can never truly erase from sports history... even if you slap on a new unimaginative name like "Commanders."

Well, at least it appears that Ricky Sanders didn't do any massive celebration after that last score.
In today's NFL he and the entire offense would've done a group selfie pose in the end zone as the announcers gushed over how awesome it was.

Mike Ditka apologized to Tom Landry after the Bears destroyed the Cowboys 44-0 in 1985.
He should apologize to Buddy Ryan and the fans of NEW ORLEANS for things.

@@DolFan316 awww, I always viewed Ditka as the guy who postures himself as a bully especially during the Bears 85 season, Buddy was the real leader of that locker room (as far as I can tell, looking back) , I may be wrong about him though, just my impression

@@DolFan316 I agree with you there. I did like what those Eagles did on that 2nd Cowboys/Eagles meeting of the strike season. Victory formation fake , defensive p.i. , followed by a touchdown in final seconds. Idk why but the way he was supporting his striking players was,in my opinion, very classy. (For him,at least)

Steelers couldve gone 8-8, as the Jets made it to the playoffs that year with that record. Considered one of the worst teams to make it in the playoffs.
The game had passed noll by in 1991. He was a great coach in the 70s but did not change with the times. Wasn't able to relate to the younger players. Biggest blunder was not drafting Marino. After 1979 the steelers weren't very relevant under Noll. Yes he did a great job with the 1989 team. They weren't very good but got them into the second round of the playoffs. Bill cowher lead this same team that finished 7-9 under noll to an 11-5 record the next season. Their best record since 1979.
People forget yes the 91 Redskins were loaded on offense and that Mark Rypien was very good at the deep ball, but people forget the defense. Joe Gibbs had a huge staff and where he exclusively focused on offense, he had Richie Pettibone do the defense. Even in America's Game, all Joe Gibbs could do was say stop them. Remember the Redskins had Darrell Green and pass rusher Charles Mann. They could rotate players and keep them fresh. Just remember the defense only gave up 10 points in this entire game. 13 the week before against the Oilers. The Redskins defense under Gibbs was very very underrated.

Out of the 3 SB seasons from this team the 91 season is my fav.
You know washington has been to 5 superbowls. Although we lost 2. Lost to the 72 dolphins and the Marcus Allen raiders.

this same scenario happened the following year vs the Cardinals coached by no other then Joe Bugel. gibbs called a pass play once the game was out of hand. cary conklin was in as mark rypien was finished for the day. the play scored a td and bugel was pissed off. gibbs plays mr nice guy but you are talking about a very very competitve person who is in the NFL and Nascar hall of fame.
I will never fault a back up for playing and taking advantage of every second they get. They may never get that chance again. Gibbs should have never apologized, maybe the Steelers should have stopped them in the first place.

The broadcaster mentions before the play in question that Washington had just called a timeout. Odd to call a timeout with the two minute warning about to happen and a massive lead.
I’m not insinuating Washington was trying to run up the score, but a timeout before that play seems odd.
I don’t understand why Washington couldn’t simply run the ball and punt. The excuse given in the video is they would expose their defense to the risk of injury. That’s true, however instead their offense was on the field instead, which puts the offense at risk of injury.
Seems the thinking was that if they could just pick up this one first down, they could pretty much run out the clock the rest of the way by kneeling. Unless you have really bad blood going on (which you didn't here), players don't get injured on kneel down plays.

The Steelers had a string of terrible QBs. Malone, Bubby, O'Donnell. It shows what a sorry state the Steelers were in at the time when Neil O'Donnell is battling Bubby Brister for the starting QB job.

@@crowtservo They should have, but the drug rumors were really rampant (true or not). It scared off a lot of teams, and it hurt the Pitt football program from then on (some people think that Shula started the rumors so he would fall to him).
@@jab1289 I watched a thing about the 83 draft, the Pittsburgh police told the Steelers that the drug rumors were absolutely not true. They took Gabe Rivera because Noll wanted to rebuild the team around a great defensive player like in the early 70’s instead of a QB.

I stopped being a Washington fan nearly a decade ago because of the racist name they used AND because of fucking Dan Snyder. Incidentally, I'm also not a fan of religion at all.
That said, I STILL idolize Joe Gibbs and love how he conducted himself as Washington's coach. Washington fans used to complain about being disrespected, and it would make a lot of people who allegedly threw the shade incredulous because they were consistent winners.
You don't have to worry about that so called racist name anymore. I stopped being a fan when the NFL went woke. But it stopped being a game after the 1990s. It is just not the same game it was during the 1980s and 1990s. Too many BS rule changes and the style of play has changed. Snyder is an idiot.
