- Prior to week 13 of the 1980 NFL season between the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers and a game at Three Rivers Stadium, the Dolphins and Don Shula made a controversial signing of a Steelers player, RB Rick Moser, claiming him off of waivers when the Steelers tried to activate him from injured reserve. What followed was a bitter feud involving name-calling, running up the score, and a heated exchange of words between two legends. Yeah, but Belichick DID do this with LeGarette Blount. That move cost the Patriots some things on the down low. They stayed off a couple draft picks right after that. I'm from Pittsburgh and have friends in the organization. They leveraged going public for the picks. Robert Kraft and Dan Rooney ironed it out on a private call between the 2 of them. That's why Steelers fans hate the Patriots more than even the Browns.

Truthfully, I don't know. Ever since the NFL caved to the woke, anti-American crowd, I largely stopped following. My guess, though, is that Steeler fans hate NE more than they do CLE because Belichick owns Pittsburgh in the playoffs, and Cleveland hasn't won a football game in 283 years.
Man, sports fans have the longest memory. Especially if they felt slighted by something. I still have to hear my old man complain about the damn tuck rule.

I really enjoy the amount of time spent on Rick Moser. This was a different era of football, I hesitate to say a greater era but these guys often bled their teams colors. They played for each other & the cities they represented as much as the almighty dollar. I just really enjoyed this reminder of a guy I had forgotten about. My Steeler fan hood runs deep, as I was just a little boy when Moser played, but I do remember him. I remember his preseason play more than anything. Thank you for this story, I know it was about Shula & Bradshaw but I enjoyed the entirety of the story.
Bradshaw was never one to bite his tongue or be politically correct this surprises me.
I wish the NFL had more players like Bradshaw now.

Shula rented Bradshaw's 1978 movie "Hooper" on VHS multiple times, and always rewound the tape before returning. Two greats that respected each other.
Moser has acted in several movies, most notably as the high-sock-wearing assistant football coach in Dazed and Confused, as a football player in Everybody's All-American, and as himself in Fighting Back: The Rocky Bleier Story. He has appeared in the popular television series The Facts of Life and Diff'rent Strokes. He also had recurring roles on ABC's General Hospital and HBO's 1st & Ten. Moser appeared in numerous national TV commercials and had modeled in print advertisements.
My Lord, I do now recall that Assistant Coach from that movie, LOL! "What's the matter Floyd, Quarterbacks don't need to sign the Pledge Form?"
Moser probably made more money acting than he did playing in the NFL.

And if you see the hits he took, it's amazing he played as long as he did. In today's era where you can't touch QBs or WRs, Bradshaw would have excelled.

The NFL has since somewhat limited this practice--ironically because of the Steelers. I remember back in the 1990s how much Bill Cowher and Tom Coughlin hated each other and Coughlin would claim players off the Steelers practice squad days before the Jaguars and Steelers would play each other. After multiple instances of this happening the NFL banned teams from signing practice squad guys from other teams if that specific team was their next opponent.

A Dolphin player found a playbook from the opposing team. He gave it to Shula. Shula threw it in the trash can.

Fun Video. I enjoyed watching it. In 1992, the Giants claimed TE John Brandes from Washington in very similar circumstances. It was December, and the two teams were preparing to play each other later that week. It was a home game for New York, however. Washington won easily, and I do not remember any animosity between the teams. I recall an interview before the game in which John Brandes said that he was now a Giant, and he was obligated to do his best to help that team win. I hope my memories are accurate.
A buddy of mine interned for the GIANTS in 1992 and 1993. He picked up John Brandes from the airport when the GIANTS signed him.
He developed a friendly relationship with John Brandes and said he was a great guy. When the GIANTS later released Brandes, my friend gave him a ride back to the airport. Brandes gave him one of his GIANTS hats.
A gentleman's agreement is worth the paper it's written on.

I can't fault Shula in this case. The Steelers didn't go into this situation with eyes closed. They knew the risk they were taking with Moser knowing that they used their 3 freebies. Thank goodness the IR rules are so different these days.
Rick Moser was one of the football coaches in the movie, “Dazed and Confused.” The coach telling the players about not getting soft during the summer in the beginning portion of the movie.
I was at that game. Oh I remember that play very well. I was so confused at first, I didn't understand why Shula was running up the sideline shaking his fist at Bradshaw. Shortly thereafter, through one of the small speakers mounted on the posts at Three Rivers,* I heard Cope say that Shula was calling Bradshaw "bush" for attempting to run up the score when the game was in hand. This was also discussed on Cope's post game show. Ah the good old days, I would listen to Cope's show all the way home to WV from the parking garage until I lost signal. Strangely, there was virtually nothing about the incident later on the 11:00PM news.
*No video screens back then. Those speakers on the posts and in the restrooms provided the game audio. Many folks sat with portable radios and even a few portable small screen TVs to supplement the coverage.

The thing is that Shula and Dolphins were a force in the early 80's. Making it to the divisional round in 81 and losing to the Chargers. 82 making to the Super Bowl and losing, 83 losing in the divisional round to the Seahawks, 84 losing the Super Bowl to the 49ers, 85 losing the AFC Championship to the Patriots. The Dolphins still were a force in the NFL it's just that they never won a Super Bowl.

they were the early afc power of the '70's that handled weaker nfc teams in two s b's going to three straight sb's. then the steelers by passed them for afc then nfl superiority. then they got handled by bigger better stronger nfc teams in the early '80's in the sb. like most afc teams did in '80's. phins were consistent for 15 year span. i wouldn't say were a force or a true power based on back to back sb's in early '70's. had they won a sb with a retooled roster in '82 or '84 then maybe. and they let marino's best season go to waste. they were a poorer failed version of niners who won five sb's in a 14 year span.

Why is that a thing in the first place? Only getting three guaranteed people back from injuries seems detrimental if someone wants to yoink your star players and they can do without repercussions.

The move was obviously to wreck the Steelers chances of winning the game. Have to agree with Bradshaw on this one. This injured reserve rule of 3 sounds dumb and I hope the NFL changed this afterwards.

Here is a potential video: On December 16, 1979, Terry Bradshaw ran the ball against my Bills ... he got tackled, his helmet came off and Bills LB Jim Haslett kicked his head and Terry was bleeding, but missed only one play.
Former Buffalo News writer Larry Felser said: "Haslett claimed he thought he was kicking the ball, but that's not possible, the ball has more hair."
I specifically remember that play. You could see Hasslet reaching out to stop on Bradshaw. Very Bush league.

A Bradshaw-Shula feud??? Didn't know that but I knew that Bradshaw didn't get along with Steelers' head coach Chuck Noll either. Good 'ol Terry must have been a bit on the difficult side lol..
He disliked Noll for how Bradshaw thought he was misused early in Bradshaw's career. Noll was not personally close to his players at all and Bradshaw, a small-town kid from Louisiana, really wanted a father-figure type when he got into the NFL.
This is no big deal. This guy makes this little Mickey mouse scenario not even big enough to qualify as a footnote and acts like it's Ohio State and Michigan during the Ten Years War. Two HOFers feuding over the acquisition of a 4th string RB? Get real. Nobody cared and neither should you.

In a second playoff game against NE the Broncos Tim Tebow faced his old Broncos coach fired earlier but picked up by NE prior to this game. Guess who won?

Yeah the IR rules were very stupid back then. Today's IR rules are million times better than what they were during the 1970s into the 1980s. Who ever thought of the IR rules for the 1970s and 1980s needs to get their heads examined.

What a waste of time. Here's all you need to know: Shula claimed two players (who were not very high on the depth chart when they were active) who the Steelers were trying to activate from IR by putting them waivers. This occurred 2 days before the teams were scheduled to play each other. Bradshaw didn't like that this was done despite a gentlemen's agreement by teams not to do such a thing, so he threw a meaningless pass with the game decided instead of just running out the clock. Shula didn't like it so he allegedly had a minor shouting match with Bradshaw after the game. End of story, end of "feud".

If we're being honest, neither team had a shot at the playoffs. Both teams would have had to win out. The Stealers might have made it(they would have swept Houston who ended up getting in). But Miami would have finished 10-6 which would have had them still out of the playoffs(both wildcard teams were 11-5).

@@MrPapageorgio10 That is quite the unusual occurrence for a playoff bracket; AFC was wide-open, and I'd say all those teams had a shot at winning the AFC (I don't think the Oilers would have, but I feel good about the other 4 team's chances back then; not so much today, as the players are older now).

Humph, they win 3 games in an untenable situation, yet there are other teams with nothing going on like that and they win 0-2 games (that wasn't a great Saints team either, nothing at all like the 2008 Patriots without Brady).

I always thought the Dolphins held on to Shula way too long they should have given him the Tom Laundry Treatment and showed him the door sometime after their SB 17 loss to the Skins.

Yeah it was legal, but it was still a dick move by Shula. Funny thing was karma came back to bite Shula for the rest of his coaching career - He never did find a successor to Larry Czonka.
Don Shula was and always will be the greatest coach in NFL history! Even if Bill Belcheat surpasses him in the win column, many of those wins were by cheating such as spying on the opposing team and deflating footballs. New England has been fined numerous times and has even had draft picks taken away from them. And that's only the times they have been caught.

I will never forget how "Saint Shula" rigged the 1982 AFC Championship Game by not covering the field thus negating the Jets team speed. Too bad for the Jets. I think they would have beaten that Redskins team that year. The 1982 Jets were loaded.

1980. the end of the super steelers. just a matter of which ones retire each season now. steelers were old and aging. phins still had a few leftovers from the perfect squad. both had old qb's leading to that strange path both took at the '83 draft. did bradshaw even win a playoff game after this point? i know steelers had a few playoff misses then bolts beat them at home in playoffs (i think that was last bradshaw game) before raiders destroy them in la in playoffs.
Bradshaw played well in the playoff game vs San Diego in 1982. The Stealers had a 28-17 lead in the 4th quarter. The defense blew that. But he himself threw for 325 yards and 2 TD's and also had a rushing TD. The next season he was out the entire year but came back and started week 15 @ NY and threw for 77 yards and 2 scores before his elbow gave out. That was his last game so it wasn't like he fell off like a lot of players do, his body just couldn't do anymore.

i think noll preferred d with the steel curtain now done and he fell in love with senore sack. rooney may have been concerned with so called marino baggage rumours out there with marino playing too close to home.
