  • In 1991, following an injury to starting quarterback Randall Cunningham, the Philadelphia Eagles signed former New York Jets quarterback Pat Ryan out of retirement. Even though Ryan hadn't played in over a year, and had stopped thinking about football to an extent, Rich Kotite signed him. The end result was an absolute disaster. This is the story of the 1991 Eagles, the 1991 Monday Night Football game between the Eagles and Redskins, and this disastrous signing

Given the fact the offense due to Randall and McMahon both getting injured they often faced teams starting in their side of the field since we had no offense. Later that year was the house of pain game on Monday night where we probably seen the greatest defensive performance ever against what was considered an all time great offense (Oilers). Yeah, Pat Ryan wasn't exactly showing off his football knowledge when he came out of retirement in 1991; he played like he forgot everything he ever learned about being a QB in the NFL. Too bad about the 1991 Eagles offense, as their defense was one of the greatest, but the team didn't even qualify for the playoffs due to that damaging 4-game losing streak after that 3-1 start (that loss to Tampa Bay in Week 6 1991 was especially ugly).
Mentioning Randall Cunningham's 1990 season, I still think it was the best season of his career, even better than his 1998 renaissance (not too far behind in passing yards in comparing1991 to 1998; more rushing yards, and also more was expected of Cunningham in 1990, as he was a highly-paid player who was counted on, unless 1998 with the Vikings).

@christopherengel7436 Thank You, it didn't hurt that the Patriots caught a fatal case of the exact same arrogance that derailed the Seahawks, three, years, before.

I don't remember Steve deberg coming out of retirement how did I miss that one?

I don't think DeBerg is officially retired yet. DeBerg lost his starting jobs to a young Joe Montana, John Elway, Vinnie Testeverde, & a old Dave Krieg.

Soulless things always skip over the first step that they're not God so trying to hurt others to feel good is a pure character issue. They even make having others support them evil by using it to hurt outsiders. That is a complete character issue that can't be fixed. It's being a dry crackhead where you hurt anyone to not hurt. Creepy and sue a side fixes that

Let's be real, though, Eagles would have been stomped in that game with McMahon under center.

In 1991, Washington, stomped everybody, their, only, losses, were, a rivalry Game, and, a Game where absolutely none of their starters played.

Eagles were 3 and 1 and McMahon was the third highest QB going into the game. With that defense, not likely.
