Loads of student debt to pay off and deciding to change career as I’ve always been fascinated by psychology but realised from this video that I can’t afford to do another undergraduate degree. I feel so lost, not sure if it’s even possible anymore.
Love your video! Very helpful to me as someone who wants to study clinical psychology! a small question though: would it create any advantage to choose a BPS accredited postgrad course with clinical placement provided than without it?
Hey - this video was amazing thank you!! I’m currently doing my A-levels and absolutely love psychology but English literature is probably my favourite subject. However my dream is to be a clinical psychologist. I am worried that if I did an English degree and then a conversion course for psychology, this wouldn’t be as valid or good enough as doing the psychology undergraduate. I’d be super grateful to hear your advice? Thank youuuu x
@@ayannamoise2496 hello could you please email me I would like to ask about clinical psychology about my career ? Could you please help me about this issue ?
Hey, thank you for a brilliant video! I really like the advice you gave about keeping a reflective journal. Would it be possible to make a video specifically focused on this and how you did it? What you wrote, did you follow a specific framework? Any useful resources for reflective writing/thinking etc. Thank you ❤️
Hey! I don’t really follow a specific framework because mine is intertwined with my diary but I have been recommended a few frameworks - I’ll definitely make a insta post/vid about it at some point!
HCA is more hands on care, usually following care plans. Support workers are genuinely more about promoting independence to service users and following their support plans. I've done both. Graduated with MSc Health Psychology in 2019. Travelling for now, but when I get back to the UK hopefully get my first AP post. Then, hopefully a docterate in the future. :)
The difference between healthcare assistant and support worker should, in theory, be that healthcare assistants work with less able people who often need personal care and high level of care input (medications given, taken to places, shopping and cooking done for the patient) and the support workers work with people that are more able; they have more of a supervisory role focused on empowering and guidance and less on personal care or manual handling ( so they would remind the patient about their medication, they will accompany someone out, and help them shop and cook for themselves). The elderly tend to get healthcare assistants, people with learning disabilities tend to get support. The lines between them are not definite though - you do empower the elderly too, and some people with learning disabilities need both care and support. In real life, the demarcation can't be mentained.
Hi I'm thinking about doing the psychology conversion masters.. how do you find it? My under graduate degree is in a different field and I graduated in 2006. Just wondering if it is manageable ?
@@traceyoneill8627 ive only just started. fiist week, but Im fascinated by it. I graduated in 2010. I'm doing full time. Its lots of critical analysis and a 10k dissertation on anything you want. Only one exam. quite a few essays. Ive enjoyed the induction process so far

Grateful for the video, do you have to have a masters in psychology’s to become a clinical psychologist. Can I get a joint masters in phycology and criminology if my percentages are right.
To become a clinical psychologist you need to either have a BSc in Psychology which is BPS accredited or a MSc Psychology (conversion) which is BPS accredited (if you did an undergrad degree in a different subject).
Ive chosen a BA in Philosophy and Psychological Studies and am due to start next week but now I'm panicking, should i have chosen a BSc in Psychology instead?
I’m very interested in doing psychology at uni but I’m worried as I haven’t done it for a level so I’m not sure if I’ll be at a disadvantage most unis I looked at ask for one science and I currently do biology chemistry and film
I didn’t do anythjng psychology based at college and I’ve just been accepted into 5 unis for clinical psychology, biology and chemistry will definitely help you get in too!
Hey Aika, I wanna do Counselling Psychology instead and I'm the 2020 graduation cohort. Do you know what the differences are? One thing that I find frustrating is that Unis require a certificate in counselling skills which has to be self funded, other than the 2:1, BPS registration, and work experience. What do you know about this? I do want to do Counselling Psy but all this self funding is crazy! I'm fine applying for a student loan for the Doctorate but the Certificate just has to be paid from my pocket and my pocket is empty for now, since the pandemic. If you don't know this yourself, perhaps you could do a collab with someone who's done it, I'm sure you know people, right? Much love to you.
Yes, it’s such a shame and bizarre thing that counselling psych is fully self-funded! It makes it very expensive and only accessible to few. Yes I do know a few counselling psych trainees from meeting them on my Instagram - I do know some differences myself but will try drag a counselling psych into a video for an interview series hopefully!
Fantastic explanation just what I was hoping for. Starting my psychology degree in January 2021. Currently an assistant manager for supported living with a whole range of mental health diagnoses. Knowing this is perfect experience in line with the doctorate is amazing. Please could you clarify one thing for me. If you get a 2.1 or 1st can you go straight onto doctorate without doing a masters in-between? Thanks
Hi, yea that’s looking good for you mate. I’ve just started psychology undergraduate are you undergraduate? Because what did you have to do to get onto that, do you have qualifications of any sort? Cheers
Tom Burdick got you. Become a support worker and got promoted to an assistant within a few months as had a lot of transferable skills and took to the job really well. No experience required been fully trained by my company and put me through level 3 diploma
My study background is a bachelor's in Computer science and now I am studying a master's in cognitive science with a specialization in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. I took some technical classes too but I enjoyed these two majors so much and in the future, I want to work as a clinical psychologist. My next plan is to do PhD as well from any German university. But every time I discuss this with any senior I get the same reply that I cannot be a clinical psychologist. Would you guide me on what I should do or any other field I should search about if I can't be a clinical psychologist.?I just want a bright future i struggled a lot in finding my interest. And now I need help from seniors.
I have an undergrad in psychosocial studies and psychodynamic counselling. And a masters in psychoanalytic studies. I’m now moving on to consider my phd… are u saying that I would absolutely need to do a doctorate in clinical psychology to qualify as one?
Hi Ayka, thanks for your videos, very helpful! I am an undergraduate psychology student, I’m currently studying in a university in Italy but live in London. I am a midwife as well and hopefully will be able to work in the perinatal mental health team in the near future. Do you think that could qualify as clinical experience? My main interest is clinical psychology so I think I will go down that path. I don’t get the difference between what you can do with a PhD and what you can do a master’s degree in clinical psychology in the Uk though. Any suggestions?
Hi Ayka, thanks for the video. I'm thinking of doing a masters in Psychology, what are your thoughts on distance learning courses of this nature? thanks in advance.
Thanks for this video. May I ask, you've said that if you get a 2:1 or above, you don't need to get masters to go onto a phd. But you got a first and still got a masters degree on top of that. Why is that?
hey, can you make a video of what other jobs we can go into with psychology other than clinical psychology please. your channel has been so helpful . thank you so much
Psychology at Oxford can be studied either on its own as a 4 year MSci in Experimental Psychology, or in combination with philosophy or linguistics as part of the 3 or 4 year BA or MSci in Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics, right ? which one did you choose
3:23 I thought a 2:1 was normally awarded to students whose final scores were => 60%. I have never heard that 2:1 starts from above 65% before. Also how do you spell your name?
But what if a person has an undergrad in English and then a master’s in educational psychology would that be sufficient to apply for the PhD in clinical psychology?
Hi, thank you so much for this video. It was really helpful! I was wondering whether working as a learning support worker in schools would be useful clinical experience? Or is that edging more towards the side of educational psychology?
Hey! It would definitely be helpful as LD is a significant field in Clin Psy as well. You might also find that you end up wanting to be an Ed Psy - who knows! :)
This was so helpful! I’m in my third year and have wanted to go into clinical psychology forever - bit of a stupid question but when you’re applying for the doctorate, can you apply for the program at more than one university each time?
I'm currently graduated in psychology from Pakistan, want to do master in UK as international student, make sure any like clinical, education, organisational but most priority in clinical should be one year BCS on year master is less tuition fee.recommend me affordable universities?
Hi great video. Can I ask is it more beneficial to do a psychology undergraduate degree or the conversion masters? I have a degree in another subject and want to pursue psychology but don't know if I would learn more on a 4 yr degree as opposed to the masters. Thanks
So, do you need to do a Masters before doing a Doctorate if you get a 2:1? ☺️ Thank you, by the way, for the informative video, as neither my careers advisor nor the internet were very helpful!
Quick question. If im some random 15 year old who wants to be a clinical psychologist like help people with problems and that stuff how do i get an undergraduate degree and doctorate degree and like i wanna know the route of what i should do if i want to be a clinical psychologist like when i havent done any college work or even GCSE's Thanks
So you don't need a masters if you have a 2:1/first in your psychology accredited degree? You then go on to research/clinical experience and then apply for the doctorate?
Hey miss, I found ur video really helpful. I want to be a neuropsychologyist and I'm in uk doing applied science. can u plz tell me requirements needed for neuropsychology?
Hi, I have found all your videos so informative and helpful so thank you! I was wondering whether you think it is important to do a masters or not because I will graduate next year (probably with a 2:1) and I am not sure whether to apply for a masters or not? Thank youuu :)
Hey! It’s a hard one - I’d say personally I would get clinical experience if you feel like you’re gonna get a high 2:1. However, masters these days CAN be the foot in the door for placements. It really depends on what you want to get out of the masters - don’t do it just for the sake of it (like I did and regretted it) !
Hello hope you are doing well. I want to study paychology in kcl! And it says that it is accredited by the british psychological society ( BPS) does that mean its also eligible for GBC! ? Please let me know
many undergrad bsc Psychology degrees have an integrated placement year, so the course lasts for 4 years. would this count as relevant and sufficient experience to apply for the doctorate in clinical psychology? Thank you!
Hi I've been a research assistant within mental health services (NHS) for the past 3 years. I also have a MSc Clinical Mental Health Sciences at UCL. Do you think this is enough experience to apply for the doctorate or would you suggest more experience in a role such as assistant psychologist before applying? Thanks for this video. May I ask, you've said that if you get a 2:1 or above, you don't need to get masters to go onto a phd. But you got a first and still got a masters degree on top of that. Why is that?
I talk about this in “my journey” video!
My undergraduate Psychology degree isn't BPS accredited so do i have to do a conversion course to get a BPS accredited degree before doing my PHD?
hey, can you make a video of what other jobs we can go into with psychology other than clinical psychology please. your channel has been so helpful . thank you so much
Do you have a video on how to be reflective and keeping a reflective journal? Or could you make one?
Have a video on this!! :)
Could you do a video on the different types of therapists?
Should we get a postgraduate diploma first and then the doctorate?
What A levels do you suggest taking for therapy career?
Does University of London offer BA in Psychology or just BSc?
Maam, is doctoral degree compulsory. I want to work as a teacher or professor in college with my masters in child psychology
Hi great video. Can I ask is it more beneficial to do a psychology undergraduate degree or the conversion masters? I have a degree in another subject and want to pursue psychology but don't know if I would learn more on a 4 yr degree as opposed to the masters. Thanks
I’m on the same boat!
Hello, with license in Theology can i continue for a master and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology please?
If yes What Master choose, B.A or BS?
Would being a care worker for people with dementia count towards clinical experience?
So, do you need to do a Masters before doing a Doctorate if you get a 2:1? ☺️
Thank you, by the way, for the informative video, as neither my careers advisor nor the internet were very helpful!
Hello! I just have a question. Is the doctorate in psychology and the PhD the same thing?
Hey! They’re very very different. I’ll make a post/video about this soon.
Would it be better to do psychology as a degree or psychology and neuroscience?
Quick question. If im some random 15 year old who wants to be a clinical psychologist like help people with problems and that stuff how do i get an undergraduate degree and doctorate degree and like i wanna know the route of what i should do if i want to be a clinical psychologist like when i havent done any college work or even GCSE's Thanks
Does this mean that if you have a 2.1 in a psychology degree you can skip masters and hop onto the doctorate?
So you don't need a masters if you have a 2:1/first in your psychology accredited degree? You then go on to research/clinical experience and then apply for the doctorate?
Hey miss, I found ur video really helpful. I want to be a neuropsychologyist and I'm in uk doing applied science.
can u plz tell me requirements needed for neuropsychology?
Heyyyy , I just wanted to know if you have to do your masters after u get your degree first or could you just do your phd after ? Thanks
Thank you!
Yes, however you need to check with each course to see if it needs to be one year full time paid work. you can definitely try!
Hi I've been a research assistant within mental health services (NHS) for the past 3 years. I also have a MSc Clinical Mental Health Sciences at UCL. Do you think this is enough experience to apply for the doctorate or would you suggest more experience in a role such as assistant psychologist before applying? Thank you for the video - so so helpful!
Hi, I am just wondering if it’s possible to undergrad in social work and then masters in psychology?
Yes it is possible, you can do an MSc psychology CONVERSION course after your undergrad which is a 1 year course and then you will be eligible to apply for furthur doctorate program
