Great build, simple, efficient and functional. I lived out of a Ford F-150 for 18 months back in the early 90's. Not because I was 'broke & starving'. I took a sabbatical from life to explore and photograph the Pacific/Northwest. Didn't have some of todays modern luxuries like cell-phone/tablets/Wifi/internet... But, I had food, water, shelter and mobility. Those days were some of the best of my life. Kudos to your resourcefulness & ingenuity. I wish you the Best!

I like that you included a good venting system. It seems that most custom truck bed build outs overlook how important that is. Nice job!

If you add another curtain rod *under* the windows, your curtains will actually follow the angle of the cap instead of hanging straight down and flopping around.
I used cheap bath towels with a roll sewed over the curtain rods on top and bottom.
Bath towels are thick enough to block light, provide privacy, and if you cut them in half vertically, they will pleat and can be tied back to look decent when not in use.
Also, bungee cords stretched between two points make way better curtain rods. ;)

Very Nice! Perfect for road trip across the country. No need to spend $110 at holiday inn. When I can spend $20 for a truck stop shower and keep the rest of the money for museums, caves tours and everything else.

Bryan, I think you did a fantastic job with setting up the bed of your truck into a little camper or bug out type vehicle. I am truly impressed. With the carpet it gives it a cozy feel, so unlike true camping. That in itself is a stress buster. Glad to see a solar panel hookup. That gives you a lot of options. Also I notice some people complaining about the loss of usable space by having this type of set up. If you needed to, your truck is more than capable to haul a small trailer that could haul further supplies if you needed to (chainsaw, tree stand, generator if you wanted to for basic welding set up, etc) I am truly impressed Bryan. You should be proud of yourself..

Yes, I definitely love it. I like how you left room on the right side so you may climb in/out more efficiently than if the bed ran across the whole width. I feel it offers so much freedom to utilize ones own vehicle and save money vs hotel stays, plus the ability to shower at places like truck stops and Planet Fitness. All great pointers and ideas and I do see myself setting up a similar truck camp in my Toyota Tacoma.

  • @robinconkel-hannan6629

That's similar to what I did a few years ago but I didn't have the modern technology.. I'm only five foot two so I was able to put my bed cross-ways just behind the cab.. That gave me a little more room to put other stuff like a small refrigerator.. My topper had a small ledge where it sat on the truck bed.. I cut 3/4 inch ply to size and slid it into place.. My table was off the bed like yours.. I like what you did with the solar cell.. Wish I'd had one.. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.. Keep up the good work..

My dad had a 74 F-150 Explorer that had a factory cap and had like a captions bed with drawers, 12 volt lamps, full indoor/outdoor carpeting, window curtains and all the neat stuff. It was 4wd with an extended front bumper for a huge cooler, fishing poll holders, winch etc. He had 35's and we would drive down the beach and camp on the weekends.

Oh yeah, 1 other thing: You might consider installing battery switch in the cab so that when you're driving down the road you can switch it over to charging the batteries in the battery box. And of course you would still use the solar panel and charge controller when you're camped.

    • @bryansober2293

would of gone with a darker carpet. that said swapping it out isn't going to break any bank. 10 out of 10 for that build. a four day weekender in that would be in comfort

I've seen small AC window units used at campgrounds where an extension cord is used to run the AC. Make sleeping in hot climates much better.
They mounted the window units in various places on the camper shell.
The best one I think, the gentleman had the window unit mounted to a pair on milk crates with a fabric tube Velcroed to the AC unit, then to the window of the camper shell. So it didn't need any special window cuts, and it didn't deafen you inside the camper.
I've even seen this used on tents where the fabric tub was sewn into the side of the tent.
You could also set up an outlet for plugging an extension cord from the truck to a power outlet at a camp ground and inside the camper have an outlet to run a TV or hot plate for cooking.
The things you have already done are very nice already, keep going.

This has given me so many great ideas, I plan on being one of those traveling nurses and using this to get from place to place would save so much cash. I already got a truck, but I was thinking even more stealth like. So even if people looked into it all they would see is a piece of plywood, some cut up 2x4's , a rubber maid tote and a duffel bag.
