- I found a great butane powered cordless soldering iron, micro torch and hot blower at Harbor Freight. It is made by Schneider, is easy to use, very effective and works great. In this video I set it up and show you how to use it. This soldering iron, micro torch is made by Schneider and most commonly sold through Harbor Freight in the US.

I bought one of these and was about to return it because I couldn't get it to fill with butane. I'm so glad I found this video--I can't believe I had no idea I was supposed to fill it upside-down. Thanks for this!

For me I thought it was defective because the butane started to blow back. It may have a small tank
The blower is the base of the screw on assembly. You screw it on without the tip in the end. The plastic is strictly for storage and letting it cool down.

not bad for $20, soon they will release the California legal version for $900 it will come with a catalytic converter to burn any extra butane and a special fill hood over the fill port to catch any escaping gas, the collection bag must be sent to a legal certified authorized hazardous waste disposal site, then the bag must be properly recycled. You must also properly install the legal certified authorized exhaust suction fan and duct work to the roof. However before any use you must get a permit to make sure you have had proper training and understand the full risk involved with carbon monoxide poisoning in your home.

I’m using the butane soldering iron that I “bought” from RadioShack in 2004 when I was working there. Still using the original tip also. I’ve gotten so much use out of this iron over the past 17 years. I’m into custom car audio and I fix electronics for the fun of it and because I’m a cheap ass lol

I was confused about the blower part of it but I saw another video for the Bernzomatic that when you unscrew the tip, it becomes a blower. So I just did the same thing with the Schneider to turn it into a blower to heat things up. Then you have to remove the blower part to make it torch. The plastic part is nice to just keep it contained when it is hot. So far I like it. Thanks for the video.

I'm sure someone has commented about this already, but just in case, I'll post this. I was trying to figure out how to make it a blower and it was at the very end of your video I figured it out. When you unscrewed the solder tip, that's what makes it a blower. I needed the blower for solder seal wire connectors. Thank you!!

it works fine. luckily I'm a freakin genius and was able to to figure out how to use the blower. otherwise, it works great. just take out the tip only and then you can use as a blower. you unscrew the tip itself. i think you can put the plastic over to help it cool down and think that's what its for so you don't burn anything. I put it on, and it doesn't seem to get hot at all so that's probably what it's for this thing, works great, I really like it.

Hey Walkr, as always, thanks for watching, my friend! I agree....that's one of the reasons I like to occasionally buy and review a Harbor Freight item. I look for the things that aren't too expensive, that I and others may have a use for, and then check them out. Some of the HF stuff is just straight up junk. I've thrown out some of their tools after (or during) the first use. But some items are pretty decent for homeowner use. I really like this soldering iron. I've used battery powered ones in the past and they are bulky and go thru batteries like water. I don't mind using butane and this iron/torch comes in really handy for auto/marine/outdoor wiring/electrical jobs.
I use this bad boy to light my cigars! It's the right price and well worth it!!

When i first saw this product, I thought it was battery powered. But after getting home I was dismayed that it was a fuel based soldering iron. Harbor Freight isn't specific what this product is.
At first I wanted to take it back, but for about $20, I will just going to have to figure it out.
I had a USB soldering iron from temu that lasted 3 times. It was more portable than my other soldering iron, which used AC and I found it useful. But it didn't last. So I grabbed this.
There is a blower, which I never had a blower. And it looks like I could do light welding, or maybe I mistaking?
The other benefit, which is not directly, I can stop throwing out my stick lighters, since this product uses butane refill.
I was introduced to butane when I was camping in New York back in 2014. I purchased a butane stove than I had to figure out that I needed butane cannisters. So it's not like I'm not familiar with butane.
But before realizing butane it was propane and a stove. But I couldn't tot around 20 lb tank. And unlike NC, gas stations in NYC don't offer this option.
So although more costly, it was much more convenient and safe. Thank you for your tutorial

Looking to get one, was thinking of getting a battery powered soldering iron or a butane. I need it in my tool box at work, I don't like waiting around all the time for electronic to warm up when I need to do simple electrical repairs(such as headlight or injector harness repairs,etc)
I think this maybe what I go with, can solder the wires and shrink the marine grade heatshrink with the same tool.
Thanks for watching, Timothy! I've had both battery and butane irons. For my use, I prefer this butane iron. The battery powered one I had went thru batteries really fast. I can run this butane iron for quite a while on one fill. It heats up a little quicker than a corded iron.

I have heard that clear plastic is a safety cover so the gas cannot be turned on while the cover is in place. Has a lock tp prevent the switch fro operating?

asd67lkj, Yep that's correct....once you are done using the tool, you can pop that cover on and set the iron down where ever. It will shut off the gas supply and protect you (and car interior, etc) from the residual heat in the iron.
To use it as a blower, you unscrew the soldering tip, and just use the thing it screw into. It works wonders

yeah this was the only way I was able to remove a switch from a circuit board. What a waste of time trying to do it with an iron and wick.

Any idea where to buy new tips? The HF parts list has tips for the Schneiders battery soldering iron, but not this one, although they may be the same.
Thanks for watching! This one is a Schneider iron, so if the replacements you found are listed for a Schneider, they should work. I haven't seen replacement tips for this one before.
First off, I've used these type of soldering irons for over 25 yrs, the clear plastic cap is ONLY a cap...do NOT use that cap when the torch is running.
The large red trigger is also a stand to rest the iron down....just be sure to position the vent on the tip away from the table or work bench or you'll cook the bench.....also, these irons run very hot, try to keep the flame as low as possible when soldering or you'll burn the solder and destroy the tip....
Tips can be expensive since they use an asbestos type material in the tip to temper the flame....also, best to use a wet rag or sponge to clean the tip, the bristle pads are best provided you gently wipe the tip on the bristle.
I used the irons made by Master appliance, they were $ 120 ....that was 25 plus yrs ago, I used them whenever I did in home service and I loved them, but, the constant usage would take a toll on the tips and the irons would breakdown sooner than I expected, but, they aren't for constant use, it's for that instance when the only thing to use would be an iron like this because there was no electricity or place to plug a solder station or not practical to use a corded iron....nowadays there are a range of USB power iron that work perfectly, even some battery powered versions, check them out on line, you'll be surprised how far the technology has come.

at the fuel port or fill port it has a slot going across it. does anyone know what that is for ? adjustment to turn the flame up and down? or other maintenance? because if I can't figure it out I'm going to start tinkering and more likely I will break something & probably still not figure it out. lol thank you for your time

Hey Dennis, Off topic... You replaced Headlight Assemblies on Toyota in 2015, saw your video adjusting headlights 2017 (Same New Headlight Assemblies - I guess). Wanted to know how those Headlight Assemblies are holding up (external / Internal) and if you've experienced any yellowing / hazing / pitting or had water leaks. Wanting to hear your take on the aftermarket replacements.
Hey Alan, Great question! You are correct, the adjustment was on the same headlights. Those aftermarket lights have held up pretty well. I have polished and waxed them once (another video of mine) once since installing due to some slight hazing. They are 6+ years old and still doing fine. I'd expect to replace them in maybe another year or maybe two. No water leaks, pitting, yellowing or other issues. Thanks for watching!

Some people use the blower to harden polymer bake modeling clay.

It's just a cover to protect the tips when not in use. The blower tip is just removing the soldering iron tip from it

Very cool! I'm new to soldering , at 4:44 you "tend" the tip. What's that about? I just need to cut an automotive connector (sensor connector), and splice in a new one.
Thank you for watching! Tinning the tip is basically allowing the tip to be cleaned and coated by the solder. Having the tip tinned will prevent introducing contaminants into the solder joint, so helps avoid cold joints, etc. On a new tip, it will take several times to get it tinned. Typically, I tin the tip every time I use my iron. I hope that helps!
Just got it and I love it. Only problem is that it doesn't always start. I'll flick it a few times and I get the smell of butane so I turn it off. I can tell when it lights because the sound of the gas coming out becomes lower pitch and a bit louder. Anyone else has trouble starting it every time? Other prob is that the metal part that holds the soldering tip is already oxidized (gray with brown not shiny). does that matter as long as the actual ironing tip is tinned and protected with solder? thx

Have you had problems with this clogging? I have never purchased a device using butane that has not stopped working because it clogged up and no longer works..

@@dwcoffey I've heard Zippo is the best brand to use. It is all I can find locally besides the really cheap stuff and the Zippo is 10 bucks a can for the smallest can in my local tobacco store.
