Fix Sticky Turn Signal on Honda Motorcycle

- Honda Shadows and other Honda motorcycles use the same or similar turn signal, or indicator switches. These switches get gummed up and are hard to operate. Rather than replace your Honda turn signal switch, learn to disassemble it, clean and lubricate it, and have it working good as new.

Fix Sticky Honda Turn Signal Switch
Safety glasses folks I have had carb cleaner shoot in my eye just doing simple things like this great video thanks
Great point! Thanks for watching!
Bless you for making this video. Almost passed 1,000 miles on my first bike. Sticky switch struck me tonight, you had the answer! You have been a wealth of motorcycle wisdom. Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks for watching, and I'm glad this video helped!
Thank you sir. Folks like you are rare to find nowadays
Thank you for watching!
Very rarely do I take the time to ever comment on a video let alone track it down after I’ve watched it save me 50 bucks on my blinker switch, solid information appreciate your effort and time and sharing!
I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
Sir, you are the father I never had. Thank you for showing me how to fix my bike.
I'm glad this helped! Thank you for watching!
This video was on point. One of the best how to videos I’ve ever watched. I fixed my annoying sticky problem this morning. Thanks 😊
Thanks for watching, Mel! I'm glad this helped!
U have the best how to videos! Thanks I have a 03 shadow
I know what I'm doing tomorrow. Well done sir
Dennis! First time bike owner here. I know youre getting this often, however what a fantastic how-to video! I just did this to my '03 Shadow and that I just bought. Saved me a bunch of money and this repair only ran me $1.99. Appreciate the video and the simplicity of instructions.
Glad to hear this helped! Thanks for watching, Weston!
My turn signal switch was sticking horribly. Watched your video and now it works like brand new. Thank you so much for this video to help me out!
I'm glad this helped, Ben! Thank you for watching!!
Putting the horn back in was a huge pain lol. Thank you for the video though, basically the same switch as my 08 Honda VFR!
Thanks for watching, Nicolas!
Huge thank you for making this video. I had taken the right side apart as my 07 Honda shadow has been having intermittent headlight issues and a friend of mine at a place called Fast Lane out here in Boise told me about Honda being notorious for having headlight and starter issues since they’re through the same button as to say the headlight is linked to the starter Button, and when you turn the bike on the headlight should be on press the button, the headlight you starting the bike and then the headlight comes back on. For a couple of months now, I’ve been trying to find someone that was knowledgeable that would be able to just take care of it for me. Let me Pam with no luck so then I went to UA-cam eventually about a week or two ago. I found your video had a little bit difficult time getting a hold of the cleaner and the grease, as I wasn’t finding the exact stuff that you’re using at O’Reillys over here, but I got something close to it and just before five mountain time I went through the throttle side and fixed up the starter button and then right after that went through the clutch side and near The same stuff that you did in the video turn signal and I almost couldn’t put it back together because I forgot about the little copper disk with the notch in. It went back to your video saw it and knew where I needed to put it and was able to put everything back together together.
Jinx myself, but my headlight would always be really finicky when turning on the key and as soon as I put everything back together after cleaning it and greasing it, the headlight is now on immediately when I turn on the key and then stays on until I hit the starter button and as soon as I let go, headlight comes back.
I was honestly about to just sell the bike with the issue and buy a different one and I saw your video and thankfully was able to get that stuff done even though I procrastinated for about a week. I really love this bike and riding so thanks again for posting the video. It definitely saved me a lot of time.
That is just fantastic and I'm so glad this helped get you fixed up and riding! Thank you for watching and thanks for the awesome comment!
Hi Dennis, thanks for the video. After being garaged for a couple of years my Honda VTX 1800 needed a new battery then fired right up. The only part of the bike that was ailing after that downtime was the turn signal switch. I followed your procedure and it did the trick. Even after 2 years, your video is helping people...good-on-ya mate! Cheers, and thanks!
That's great, Ed! Thanks for watching!
Followed your easy to understand direction and finished in less than 15min.
You the man!
That's fantastic, Tim! Great job and thank you for watching!
I was about to buy another turn signal unit because I figured it was just wore out after all these years. Saved me $100, great video!
Nice! I'm glad this helped. Thanks for watching, Stephen!
Hey Dennis! I used this video as a basis for me to start learning fixing my own bike. I just got myself a Honda Blackwidow as my first bike and had no longer have this problem. Thanks for instilling wisdom upon the new generation 🤙
I'm so glad this helped and congratulations on the new bike!! Thank you for watching!
Thanks man I been having trouble with my switch for a couple years now. Looks like I'll be cleaning it out and re greasing tomorrow. Save me 58 bucks on a new switch
Hope it all goes well! Thanks for watching, Ricky!
Thank you for the video. I’ve been wondering why my signal is so hard to turn off. Now I know what to do. ❤
Thank you for watching!!
@dwcoffey still haven’t gotten to it yet, but it’s starting to bother me really bad. Lol
My 2015 Shadow has this issue. Glad to see this is a common issue and their is a solution this simple to fix it. A new assembly runs about 100 dollars. Thank you sir
After I looked up a replacement, I decided to try to fix mine and ended up with this video. haha. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, Dennis. I was hesitant to do the repair, and I was planning to take the bike to a mechanic until I found your video. I had the grease and the parts cleaner. You saved me about $150 ($50 switch and $100 labor).
The only addition I would make is when replacing the completed housing, make sure to rotate the housing until it snaps into place, and then the cap will fit flush.
Thanks for watching, Rolf! And thank you for that added tip....yes sir, I should have mentioned that in the video. I'm glad this helped and glad you got it fixed! Thanks again!
Exactly what I needed. Have an 03 vtx with sticky switch that is half ass working now. I think this will solve the issue. Thanks
That's great! I'm glad this video could help. Thanks for watching, Joseph!
Seriously THANKS! Was about to go through the wiring of my bike due to turn signals no longer working. Cleaned the contacts and good as new. A 2002 Honda Shadow Vlx 600 owner thanks you!
Thanks for watching!
Hey Dennis, Great video. The switch on my '04 VTX 1800 got so bad I considered taking it to the shop to resolve before I watched your video. Once I saw how easy it was to disassemble the housing and remove the switch assembly, I knew this would be an easy fix. I expanded on your steps to clean the switch by popping off the black contact plate from the white plastic frame of the switch, so both the copper contacts on the slide and the contact points on the black plate (wires attached) could be thoroughly cleaned and lubricated with dielectric grease. Works like new again. Thanks again!!!
Fantastic!! Thanks for watching!
Hi Dennis. This is a follow-up to my comment from a couple of weeks ago. Recall that my signal switch lever was broken at the 90 degree bend. So surprised that Honda does not sell this as a separate part. After the clutch cable and the gear shift lever, it must be one of the most used parts on a bike and, therefore, prone to failure. As previously mentioned, instead of dropping $150 plus Canadian, on an entire housing assembly with wiring, I MacGyvered a nice repair. The lever was soldered and filed smooth at the break. I then flattened out a 12/2 cable strap with a hammer and recreated the oval opening with a drill and round file. The strap was then snipped and trimmed to size and bent ninety degrees. It was then glued and clamped to the top of lever with JB cold weld, steel reinforced epoxy [advertised strength of 5020 psi]. I let it cure for a full day. After removing a bit of excess epoxy I filed everything smooth and lubricated it with dielectric lubircant. I replaced the original top washer with one approximately half as thick, in order to compensate for the additional thickness of the lever with the addition of the modified 12/2 cable strap. I just installed it and everything works like a charm. The switch has never worked this well in the eleven years I've owned this bike. Cleaning and lubricating everything were critical to that result. Hopefully, the repair proves to be sufficiently robust to endure. Once again, thanks for posting a very informative and helpful video. 🦅🏍✌
John, that sounds like one of the best fab/repair jobs I've heard of. I'm glad it worked so well, and it sounds like it should hold up for years! Thank you very much for sharing that process. It could be very helpful to a lot of people!
@@dwcoffey Thanks, Dennis. Happy to pay it forward. Hopefully, it will help someone else out. I would post pictures but apparently that can't be done. Kind regards. 🦅🏍✌
Saved me some time today. I was looking up where that metal bridge might go, because one of the former owners just dropped it in there loosely. Thanks a bunch.
Thanks for watching, Marc!
Just picked up an older shadow to start riding on and has some sticky switches. Thanks for the great vid buddy
Enjoy that bike! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video! Solved my sticky turn signal that was difficult to turn off. I especially appreciated the part where you showed where the washers went as I did forget how I took it apart and came back and referenced it lol
Thanks for watching, Jacob! Yes, I think I dropped a washer while disassembling, so it seemed a good idea to point out where they go! haha.
I did this on my bike, switch is now back to life, thank you very much.
Thank you for watching, Pedro!
Thanks, worked for me. Just to note, one of metal washers was chewed up on the edges, filed it smoother.
Glad this helped! Thanks for watching!
High quality video! It saved me big time after I took apart the switch and couldn't figure out how to put it back together. Thank you! 🙏
Thanks for watching, Rob!
Great instruction. I did the same on a 2004 Honda Shadow 1100. Everything works fine.👍👌🏍
Glad it worked out! Thank you for watching, Bob!
Very helpful video. I’ve learned that WD-40 is more of a cleaner than a lubricant. To clean small parts, I usually hit it with WD-40, then scrub with toothbrush. After scrubbing, I rinse it clean with that aerosolized contact spray.
Great practice! Thanks for watching, Richard!
This video is exceptionally well done! Your explanations are concise, and you add tips as soon as the question can form in my mind. I have not seen any tutorial more enjoyable to watch. I can't wait to get the supplies to do this myself! Thank you so much
Thank you so much, Logan! I really appreciate the kind comments and thank you for watching!
With my bike the switch was acting up for a couple of seasons. It didn't always come on or would delay and sometimes wouldn't cancel. I cleaned it and it works great.
Thanks for watching!
This video was perfect! Easy to follow and just got done fixing my sticky turn signal on my 09’ Honda Shadow! Thank you!!
Thanks for watching, Jamie!
Thank you, I'll give it a try.
I hope it helped! Thanks for watching, Gene!
@@dwcoffey Yes it did. Thanks
Video was extremely helpful. Just bought a badass 2002 Shadow 750 and the turn signal switch was sticky as can be and not working properly, an hour later and it's in perfect condition. Thanks a lot :)
Glad it helped and glad you got her fixed! Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial Dennis I bet this will be getting views and comments for a long time to come. Hats off Sir and Thanks
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
Hey just wanted to let ya know ..this video really helped a lot I have 03 honda shadow identical to yours same color and all my signal switch was doing the same and getting an insight that detailed helped ..thanks ..on another note the detail u put into your videos is the reason I'm now a subscriber
Thanks for watching, Dale! I also appreciate you subscribing!
@@dwcoffey welcome
I just followed these tips to fix my 2004 Shadow sticky turn signals. Very detailed and helpful! Now they are working great and saved lots of money! Great Job sir!
Fantastic! Thanks for watching, Joel!
Just followed along and fixed my turn signal today, also a 2003 Shadow ACE. Thanks for your video
Glad this helped! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this tremendous video, sir! Just completed the job on my '01 ACE after watching 👍🏻
I'm glad this helped! Thanks for watching, Gray!
One of the best video that helped me back in June 2022 with my 1995 Shadow 600 because some piece are compatible, thanks you again.
Fantastic! Thank you for watching!
Just fixed mine after watching. You gave me the confidence to plunge in. Thanks! By the way, it's slightly different on a 2001 ST1100, but similar.
Glad you got yours fixed! Thanks for watching Dag!
Appreciate the video. My signal switch and high beam started getting sticky this past fall. Looks like I’ll plan to take assembly apart and do the cleaning with other spring maintenance.
Mine was so much better when I did this. Thank you for watching!
Cheers Dennis, I finally got it sorted out. What a horrible little mechanism, way to fiddley. Mine was on a VFR800i
and for some reason the switch block wouldn't sit back in the same spot (cables not in the correct position).
Glad you got it going! Thanks for watching, Sean!
amazing vid! I love how you took the time to show through disassembly and cleaning. Thanks!!
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
Ive been restoring and fixing my 2006 shadow spirit 750 the past few weeks, Its been sitting for over 3 years. I finally got it all back together and took it for a short shake down ride this afternoon which was awesome. Thanks for this tutorial i will be cleaning my blinker switch on it tomorrow using your video. I had to use hand signals on my test ride today because my switch is so gummed up my blinkers arnt working at all right now lol
I'm glad this will help! Ride safe and Thanks for watching, Steven!
@Dennis Coffey it worked great man! Thanks for the help
This is on my list since the last owner refused to maintain the VT and wired past it to install his own aftermarket nonsense instead. Keeping the fingers crossed. Thanks
Thanks for watching, Murray! I hope it goes well....let me know!
Excellent detailed method of maintaining the switchgear.
Just what l needed for my F6C.
Many thanks for taking the time to film and share.

Thank you so much for watching, Mack!
Last night, my 95 Honda Magna turn signal switch was giving me a fit! Going to do this ASAP!!!
Thanks for watching, Kent! Mine works good as new now. I hope it fixes yours too!
@Dennis Coffey - let me know when you're passing through Nashville area! This very detailed step-by-step tutorial saved me a bundle. I'd like to buy you a cold one in return! Thanks for posting this. Works like a charm and the turn signal switch went from gummy / sticky to feeling like the bike just came off the assembly line!!
Sounds good, Andy! Thank you for watching!
My blinkers had a delay turning on and off. Switch felt sticky so I cleaned it out this evening and its back to normal. Thanks!
I'm glad this helped, Keith! Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! I was having an issue when I'd indicate right, the front left would turn off for a few seconds after turning off the signal and vice versa. I took the switch apart and cleaned it, works like it should now, and the switch feels effortless.
Great! I'm glad this helped. Thanks for watching, Jason!
Very helpful! Fixed my switch on the '85 Magna vf700c. Slightly different design, but the general idea was the same. It works so well; it's embarrassing that I suffered with a gunky switch for as long I did. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you for watching, Ryan!
😂
Excellent tutorial! Left turn signal stopped all together. I did this first before checking bulb sockets for bad ground. Worked perfectly! Thank you
Fantastic! Thanks for watching, Michael!
Thanks for the how to video Dennis. I'm having the same sticky switch issue. I was a little worried about digging into to mine. Not anymore !! 👍 Great camera work by the way.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
Thanks dude, my blinker works again!
Fantastic! Thank you for watching, Nathan!
Thank you for this video!!!! This switch has been driving me nuts!!!!
Thanks for watching!
This is a great informative video.
The only thing I could ding ya for is saying a Phillips in the beginning.
Japan's Phillips aren't really the same I can't remember the name off hand.
Yep, you're right! They are JIS, rather than Phillips. Good catch! Thanks for watching and pointing that out, Matthew!
Great video and I was all excited to clean my turning signal switch but was not able to do it. The throttle side screw complete stripped. Tried everything to get it out and no luck. I'm going to have to order an entirely new unit and somehow break apart the old one to replace it. I was able to clean it some by spraying contact cleaner into the housing and letting it dry out. Works better, but still a little sticky. Regardless, your video was helpful.
I'm glad you were able to get it cleaned enough to work well. Hopefully the new switch assembly will take care of it. Thanks for watching, Roberto!
Found your video a couple of days ago. It is extremely well done. Used it to fix the switch on my Honda VTX 1300. Works perfectly now! Thanks so much for you efforts!!!
I'm glad this helped! Thanks for watching, Jim!
What a good tutorial! I was able to clean and re-grease my sticky switch, and now it works like it should. Thanks sir
Fantastic! Thank you for watching!
I have to say, great job on the instructions and the video/camera job. You explain it calm and easy to be understood by everyone. There is only one thing I could ad to all of this. In stead of buying a can of electrical cleaner you can also use WD40. It cleans even better and is also save for electrical connections. Adding to that, it also disperse water because it doesn't evaporates like the electrical cleaner. Bonus with the WD40, most of us already have that product laying around. So zero cost. Another bonus is, you can clean chrome and leather with it as well. It will not damage the leather in any way or form. On the contrary, it'll feed the leather because it's oily. And it'll give back A beautiful shine to it.
O and also... Use it on black plastic. You'll be amazed how those plastic's will turn out. For example. The plastic covers on a car's/truck engine. Only downside would be. You're going to want to clean every plastic bit under the hood because now the look crappy.😅😅
Thanks for watching!!
I did not know that about WD40 for leather, or that electrical cleaner evaporates
Great video. Apart from the highly detailed and informative presentation - the quality of the camerawork is amazing!
Thank you for watching, Sanjeev! I appreciate your comment!
Thanks!! That switch was bugging me for the longest.
Thanks for watching, Jawadul!
Amazing instruction thank you! My blinkers are working perfectly now 🍻
Fantastic! Thanks for watching!
Thank you, your video helped me fix my '09 Shadow Spirit VT750C2. I bought it in 2021, I am the 4th owner, and it only had 1550 miles. After a year, the sticky turn signal has been the only issue with it. Thanks again!
I'm glad this helped Steven! That's a great find....an '09 with 1550 miles! Nice. Thanks for watching!
thanks for the detailed discussion and great view of what is happening. my turn signal is no longer sticky.
Thanks for watching, Jerry! I'm glad this helped!

@@dwcoffey oh yeah, super easy and very worth while! Thank You for making this video.

Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. Such types give confidence to others when attempting something they've not done before.
Thank you very much and I appreciate you watching!
Good job. Used your video to help clean mine. One suggestion: use a Q-tip with contact cleaner to clean the points inside the rocker switch. It gets in there good.
Great idea, thanks Billy! I appreciate you watching!
This was a great video, really helpful. Would love to see one about cleaning out the killswitch. Both my ace and stateline have a really temperamental killswitch that I hear can be fixed by a good cleaning
Thanks for watching! I'll try to make a video on the kill switch.
Great video...going to be doing this to my VTX the signal switch is bad especially in the cold.
Yes, seems the cold makes them even worse as the lube hardens more. Thank you for watching!
Just did the switch on my 2010 fury with your guide. Thank you!
Fantastic! Thank you for watching, Chase!
Dennis... Was hoping you'd get into bikes. Really enjoy all of your videos. I have eight bikes . Some vintage, some fairly new.
Thank you for watching, Richard! Sounds like a nice collection of bikes! I only have one... but I do have a few videos on various maintenance routines for it. Check out Honda Shadow Maintenance on my playlist tab. thanks!
Thank you.
My switch is doing the exact same thing your's did. Now I can feel comfortable doing my own. Great video.
Thanks for watching, Lance! Mine is like brand new after doing this.
Awesome video man. Gonna try this for myself and see how it goes.
I hope it helps you out! Thanks for watching, Muse!

Thank you so much. Borrowing my buddy’s ‘03 Shadow and had to clean the switches. Now they work like a champ, thanks
I'm glad this helped! Thanks for watching!
Them switches (both sides) are a bitch to mess with but it's just something you will have to do eventually if you own one of these bikes. I've owned several and they're all the same. It's amazing they last as long as they do if you look at the small contacts.
It really is! Thanks for watching!
Just wondering when you did this was the battery disconnected or is it fine to do with the battery connected and thanks for the video it is very detailed and straight to the point good job
You shouldn't have to, the contacts are already off if you have your key out of the ignition
Thank you for watching, Cody! I did not disconnect the battery, although proper procedure dictates you should. Since the key is off there should not be any power to the switch, so I just didn't bother.
Years later still Helping thank you
Thanks for watching, Rory!! I appreciate it!
I followed step by step and it WORKED thanks so much!!! I have a 03 shadow spirit
Fantastic! Thank you for watching!
My switch just went out, gonna try this tomorrow I’ll try to let you know how it went
Hopefully this helped! Thanks for watching!
Good stuff. I just priced a new OEM switch for my VT1100...$200 (CAD) at the dealer. Crazy.
Yea, that's pretty steep! Hopefully this fix will take care of you. thanks for watching!

Outstanding! Very well done. Now I just have to find a replacement turn signal lever for the one that broke on my 2007 Honda VT750C2 Shadow Spirit. Failing that, I'll MacGyver something from the local electronics shop. Please advise if you have any suggestions. Thanks again! 🦅🏍✌
Thanks for watching, John! Every now and then, somebody on ebay will be parting one out and you can find parts fairly cheap. Other than that, I'd be thinking the same as you...make or modify something.
