- www.jonpeters.com/ jonpeters.blogspot.com/2012/08... For the past few years I've been helping my good friend, the artist Francis Cunningham frame his paintings for exhibitions. Early on we decided that a simple walnut strip frame would be a good choice, and that's how I've been framing his work, since. Some good reasons for framing with a strip frame is. 1, it is simple and affordable. 2, a strip is easily removed and reused if a client wants to have the painting framed in something more substantial. And 3, a strip will help to protect the edge and corners of a painting, when being moved or stored.

Best videos on UA-cam for framing a framed canvas. No fancy tools. Really made with an artist in mind - not a woodworking genius with a full blown shop. Thanks!
I just followed your instructions and framed two 17 x 17 x 1.5 canvases for a show. They turned out great!!!! Thank you so much Jon for making this video!
This is brilliant! Recently started selling my paintings and can't believe how much the frames cost!
Just watched a 25 minute video on how to build a floater frame which basically requires a woodworking shop. This method is so stupidly simple and cheap! Fantastic video. Thank you!
Great tutorial! That was exactly the type of frame I had in mind for displaying my paintings for sale. I believe a frame, no matter how simple, brings a painting up to a whole other level. I love your explanation of a floating frame, also. Thank you so much!
Thank you for your great tutorial, which I used to add frames to many of my abstract paintings. The frame added the perfect, finishing touch!
Thank you so much for taking the time to so thoroughly demonstrate how to do this including the tools you used, etc. I’m excited about framing my own art now and it’s affordable!
you just saved me so much time and money I cannot thank you enough.
Exactly the tutorial I needed. Thank you so much! I wish you could list all the exact products you used so it’s easier for me to just go and look and buy them. I’ve never done any woodworking and so this will be my first.
Thank you so much!!! I have been stressing over being able to afford to frame many of my pieces, and this is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you!
You are THE BEST at woodworking and explaining. Who in the world would give this info a thumbs down must be depressed 🙃 I have followed these instructions and made gallery worthy frames. Then a few years pass and I shortcut a frame it’s all messed up so I’m coming back to this great video to refresh. You’re so great!!!!
Fantastic, I have been puzzling all day over what to do with my paintings, thats really helpful, thank you.
Awesome! The craft store Micheals wanted to charge me over $100 for framing a canvas I made. You just gave me some confidence to try this myself. Wooohoo!!!
Update: I just framed my canvas, super easy!!!
Great video! I did this years ago and was remembering how nice the frames looked, but could not remember the specifics. Its nice to watch an instructional video like this when the person speaks so clearly without all the "umms"... thank you! You made it look easy.
wow great idea. this is super simple and inexpensive frame but look elegant. thanks for sharing Jon.
Great Demo! Helped me frame some vintage paintings with beat up frames. Thank you
Thank you! This is a great tutorial. I'm in the process of framing my paintings and they look awesome. Thanks, Jon!
Thanks Jon, this was just what I needed.Very helpful. Have made about ten frames for my paintings so far and they look great...price is right too!
Thank you so much for this video, very easy to follow and understand
Just made my first! I love it! Thank you so much. My pine strip split a couple times. When in mailed more towards the middle of the frame and center of strip I did not have any more problems
Very nice find. I used this to make frames for some digital canvas prints I didn't want to spend too much more money on. Gives them a nice finished look, stained them black with supplies I already had.
Just made my first frame following your video. Looks fantastic. Thanks so much!!
Thank you for making this video. It has saved me a ton of money, as premade frames cost a small fortune. And to me, strip frames are the most beautiful of all frames. They work for all styles of art. Not to mention this frame is easy to make. Plus the feel of pride I have in making the frames myself. Thanks again!
Great! Glad the video helped out and thanks for the comment
I will second this comment. Jon, interestingly, I was watching your videos when I was doing more woodworking. Now, during the past year, I started painting. Now, I'm seeing your videos once again related to painting! Thanks so much for the framing videos!
I've been pulling my hair out trying to find frames to fit my works. Then I stumbled on your video and I could kick myself!!! Talk about a "Light bulb moment"!!!
Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks Jon for this video. I didn't know you could do this type of framing to sell. I figured you needed to be able to take the picture out of the frame. This is so easy! Now I have an inexpensive way to finish my paintings. Again- thank you!

Thank you Jon for this great video. I have so many pieces of my art to frame.
Perfect presentation! Just what I needed to make some simple frame for my canvas paintings.
I have been searching and searching for this! Thank you so much!
Just what I was looking for. Thanks for making this video. Do you attach the hanging wire to the stretchers?
This is a great tutorial, thanks for being straight to the point and very clear with your instructions! It helped me a lot!
Been staring at this canvas box painting i bought years ago wondering just how to frame it! Now I know!! Thanks
Thanks so much for this. A strip frame is actually my favorite way to hang and display a painting, at least for modern and contemporary work. Cheers
Thank you for this video! Wonder if I can use a thicker wood for the frame with this method and it still looks good. I can do the frame with the corners of the straight cut wood myself but not the diagonally cut wood (I can't diagonally cut the wood and also have no machine ).
really cool! thank you so much.
Do you have some tips for framing, with somewhat archival quality, artworks on paper? I draw on rather thin paper with graphic markers, acrylics and inks.
I saw many now use adhesive foamboard. What is your opinion about it?
I am looking for the best and affordable way to frame artworks on paper and have the guarantee that my customers may enjoy good many years in company of my artwork. thank you, all the best
Matt
Your videos are simply excellent! This one is my favorite, it opened my eyes :) Thank you.
this is EXACTLY what I´ve been looking for. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
THANK YOU so much for this!! Very clear instructions for something I have needed to learn in order to hang my work. I appreciate you putting this video on youtube. .
Great videos and very helpful. I've always had a problem deciding whether to paint the edge of my canvases, now I don't need to. Gives a great finish, is inexpensive, and what's best is I can do it myself. It fulfills my main design rule - simple yet effective. (and that can be adhered to in so many ways... lol)
PERFECT! Just bought three small paintings and I'm gonna use what you just taught me!
great job explaining it. You really helped me see how to get the effect I want. Why did your wood attachment to the table change from the first shot to the second, where it has two pieces of wood in a cross configuration?
I think I could actually do this! Thank you for sharing a truly simple way of framing my artwork.
So impressed with this. Thanks! Something else I could use is quarter round bought at Home Depot to make it look like a frame surrounding it with a beveled style.
Thank you, exactly what I wanted to know. A great, simple and well presented video.
This is exactly what I've been looking for. Custom framing at chain craft stores are EXCESSIVELY pricey. Your technique is extremely simple and affordable, most of all it comes out elegant and so versatile. I'm thinking of playing around with thicker wood or apply Rub n' Buff. Thank you.
Glad it hleps
Wow! I am gong to try this! I have a couple of paintings I bought in Guatemala and want frame! Thank you for the simple and clear explanation.. I love that I don't have to use an electrical sewing machine.
Thanks Ana
Finally something I can do that does not cost nearly what they ask for ready made frames...and personally I like this look much much more than the floter style. Thank you for this!
Thank you! This is perfect for my paintings!
I enjoyed this demo. Can't wait to try it. Thank you.
Thank you, this is a great simple idea, I am very excited to do this tomorrow on all my paintings
Great video! And great directions for a beginner DIY framer. I would really love to see the same type of video from start to finish for the floating frame that was being repaired. It was a little difficult to envision that process.
...Great idea, much simpler and less tools...Thanks Jon.
THIS was exactly what I was looking for!! Any chance you can explain how to make the float frame better, meaning how big is the float strip of wood & also did you attach the new strip of wood to the float strip of wood or to the painting itself? That part was hard to see. Thank you so much!! ☺
Jon, As usual you are SPOT ON. KISS: always describes your work. "KEEP IT SIMPLE, SMART"
Sir you are a very talented woodworker and teacher. Thank you for your videos.
Thanks Jon. Much appreciated information and nice vid.
Thanks Matt
Brilliant tutorial. Love the artwork from the 50s ❤ Thank you
Great piece of simple teaching. Thanks!
This is such a great video! I've been looking to purchase frames that look very similar and they get so expensive. I'm definitely heading over to home Depot later and try this out. Thank you! you have my subscription.
wow I've been scouring the internet for a way to perfect this type of framing and now I know.. a " UA-cam Classic " in my book... thank you
Yes, this is what I was looking for. Thanks for posting.
Thanks so much! I now have my art framed, it looks so much better!
Thank you for this video! I have been looking for an easy and economical way to frame my artwork.
Glad it helped Beverly
Great video. I love your channel. Could you follow the same design, but with miters at the corner for a slightly more finished look? Thanks.
At last an EASY and inexpensive way to frame a canvas - so thankful I found your video!! I'm assuming if my canvas is only 3/4" I would buy a wood strip that is also 3/4"? I'm a newbie and bought several 3/4" canvases not realizing I would have to frame them to meet most art show criteria...
Louise, I was wondering the same, but if you watch the last part of the video, you will see that he still uses the 1.5 inch wide wood strip. He mentions that the canvas is inset a half inch or so when looking at the back so that the picture hangs flat on the wall.
Big Thank You. I've got a show coming up and always wanted to know how to make these frames. I love the look. Do you think I could cut (if done carefully) without a miter box? Again thanks my friend.
Lynette Wood sure thanks Lynette and have a great show
Good video. Since you have a mitre box, I recommend doing 45 degree corners as it makes your final product look much more professionally done and the only thing that really changes is the type of cut you make on your wood and maybe a little bit of glue. Good luck!
Simple and beautiful. Thank you
I can't wait to try this! I would really like to make the float frame adjustment that you mentioned but I didn't completely understand how that was done. Would you mind clarifying that? Thanks so much for sharing!
Just watched this video and want to second this question ... the lighting on that shot was off so I couldn’t really see what was happening on the canvas to create that “floating” effect.
Very helpful video. Thank you, Jon!!
Thanks Jon. This is really helpful.
Awesome...just exactly the information for which I was looking! Thank you!
Thank you, this looks great!
Simple, easy and beautiful. Thanks alot.
Thanks, helpful. I've been wanting to do this with some of my paintings. Nice work space.
Good, practical advice for non handymen painters like me. Now I just need a nice studio like yours.
The best video about picture frame.
Daniel Benitez im telling u
Oh thank God I found this video!! Thank you so much!!
Thanks Glad to help
Too easy and very nice. Thank you !
Hey mr. Jon Peters! I am a young contemporary artist (16) and I'm having a solo exhibition for the first time in a gallery. I want to frame all of my artwork in white frames. Is there a way to color the frames pure white (without brush strokes)? I painted a small frame, and sanded it to become smooth, but the frame didn't look good enough for me. Maybe thin the paint a little to make it more of a dye? I don't know. btw, thanks for the great videos!
Finally i found this video. My painting been hanging in my wall without a frame. glad saw this video. Thanks
Glad it helps
Nice info and demo, especially concerning the float frame which is a nice classy effect. I wonder, after watching many of your other videos....why no mitre cut for the frame ends? Also, why nail by hand when you usually use the nail gun?
I'm going to try this tonight. How do I ensure the stretcher is set in the frame a 1/2 inch?
This is fantastic! Thank you
Can I ask you if you did one on the floating frame? I couldn't quite grasp how it was floating. Thanks
What stock size should be used if the stretcher measures 1-1/2" thick [for studio wrap]?
This has been most helpful. Thanks.
I’m Glad to hear it! Thanks
Jon: I love this tape! Just one question - the section on attaching the block to the table - I could use more details on that - how big a block and how far from the edge of the table? Also I see in the video that you actually put one more piece of wood on top of that block before you attached the frame to the painting. So if you do have more detail on that I'd love to see it. Thanks! I'm off to the hardware store now.
Thank u so much. Now my paintings will look like a million dollars without the expensive fancy frames. God bless!
will definitely do this as solves a few problems I thought I had but clearly don't! Why didn't I think of framing my work like this before!?
great, thanks for the comment
I love it. Thank you.
I think I can do this myself! Your teaching was very clear
I have an exhibition in a few days and no tools but a hammer. Of course, I have no money to spend on it either. I'd given up on the idea of framing because it seemed too difficult. But I'm going to give this a try tomorrow! I hope the store will cut it for me.
I have an exhibition coming up in June. My paintings are on canvas panels (oils), never intended for an exhibition when I created them. The exhibition walls are white and I'm told that black frames would look best, but standard black frames would wreck the presentation of most of my pieces. However, I think a strip frame like yours would be perfect. Is it acceptable to stick canvas panels onto stretchers? Would anyone be able to tell the difference? Best Wishes, Sue
hey Jon, LOVE your videos. But i felt i was left wanting a little more info on the "floating frame". The concept seems simple enough, but i think there's something i'm not getting. I'd really like to achieve this look so any feedback as far as execution would be greatly appreciated.
love this man! awesome. this will save me all sorts of trouble. 😁
Great instructions for professional, inexpensive frames. Thank you! I now have no excuse for naked canvases.
you are so cute by using naked canvases that is exactly what I feel too
Can I use a Masonite pine moulding in framing?
Thank you very much thats the best video about framing i ve never see
Thanks!
Great instructions! Thanks so much for sharing 👏👏👏
Glad to hear it, Thanks!
Jon I enjoy the videos for framing the art work. As a fellow artist I have made some frames as you have shown. It would be great to have a video on how to install the hardware so the frame will hang flush to the wall. This has been an issue I have. Second question is there a standard on the reveal around the picture and the floating frame and the clearance from the canvas surface and the top edge of the floating frame. Thank You so much for all your time and efforts.
I usually go with a quarter inch reveal
Jon thank you, I really appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to answer this question.
@@JonPetersArtHome How do you keep the framing strip with an exactly 1/4" reveal as you nail it in? Also does it matter that the frame sticks out the back over the canvas for hanging?
