any reason not to cut the borders at a 45 angle so that the edges have a cleaner look?

There are reasons but not great reasons. One being that the saw he is using would not make that cut very clean or consistent on that kind of aluminum stock. I would use a chop band saw for a cut like that on the metal he's using. Personally, I think the exposed screws on the side of this looks very poor.
