  • A Contemporary Way to Frame and Exhibit your Modern Works on Paper.
    Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
    This is an ancient technique, but uses today's technology and new materials. Instead of framing my acrylic paintings - buying costly mats and mounting in old style frames and behind glass - the galleries that exhibit my work prefer my new look.
    After a coat of fresh varnish, I glue my painting on a Cheap Joe's 1.5 inch deep wood panel. The end result is visually modern and clean looking, light weight and no heavy glass to break (or Plexiglas to scratch). And much easier to handle for shipping. The overall benefits might encourage you to produce more paintings, avoiding the high cost of framing.
    Let me point out - not everyone will agree with me on this technique. It has worked twenty years for me... and here is a Step-by-Step, so you can do it yourself!
    Materials:
    Cheap Joe's Pretty Good Cradled Wood Panel - 1.5" deep
    Dark grey paint
    Gel Medium
    Half-inch thick piece of Gatorboard
    Plastic sheet
    Weight
    Paper towels
    1. Work with the Wood Panel first - Paint the four side edges and one inch all around the top edge with a dark grey paint.
    2. The paper painting has already been pre-measured and trimmed a half-inch smaller than the panel - so when the paper painting is glued on top, a narrow strip of the top dark grey surrounds the paper. The painting appears to "float" on top. I don't align the paper edge to the edge - too difficult to line up perfectly. Besides, I like a little bit of the dark edge showing.
    3. Glue down using regular gel medium. Flatten and roll out any air bubbles, then wipe off the excess gel medium with a damp cloth.
    4. Next, sandwich all this together to assure a tight bond - on top of the painting, put a sheet of 4 ml no-stick plastic sheeting and a half-inch piece of Gatorboard, to act as a press. Now comes the weight for the press - anything from bricks to gallon cans of water, books, etc.
    5. After 24 hours, disassemble the weight, board, plastic sheet (save for the next time) and the whole assembly will be complete!
    The whole mounting time is under 10 minutes... then wait for 24 hours. Don't skip any step. It will be surprisingly perfect!
    Mount the back with hanging hardware and off to the gallery it goes! This all sounds like a cooking recipe because I actually read cookbooks... pitiful.

    Thanks Bob for easy how to mount on canvas. I took one of your workshops at Cheap Joes-with my daughter, Jeni. We had a blast. I used your workbook to teach from this past week, and showed my students your "permission slip". I teach watercolor at the Roswell Visual Arts Center in Roswell, GA. I will always be a student as we never can learn enough about art, can we? Thanks for being a good role model for teaching. I am all about the fun, therapeutic process--and if it doesn't work out like I like, I make book markers.

    I'm a freelance artist with a history in frameshop work and I have to admit, I was MORTIFIED at the thought of gluing my artwork to anything. In case any of you have the same fear, I suggest buying some double-sided artist tape. It's sturdy and reliable and most importantly... easily removable if something goes sideways. In either case, the outcome is clean and very modern! Thanks for the tips, Bob. :)

    I've always been a DIY-er and I can see how framing and delivery can simply be a matter of personal choice and preferences. Here in China because I don't have a great command of the language - I end up doing almost everything DIY. High quality art supplies are cheap (which is awesome) and most shops and galleries expect the artist to deliver all of their work as Robert is doing here. Thanks for posting another excellent video !

    Thanks for showing this process and how you adhere the paper to the boards. But seems to me the boards, particularly the larger ones, can get pretty pricey too. Have you found that Cheap Joe's are the best pricing around? Do you also mount non-contemporary images the same way? I wish I could afford to do your workshops. Can you do a video some time on how you contact and present your art to galleries, what price points you give them and so on? Much appreciate all your videos and work. Also do you get a gallery to first approve an image before you mount the work, or do you mount everything regardless?

    Question...how does it dry without air getting to it? I make a lot of cards out of paintings and scraps but drying them and flattening them seems to be a problem. If I press between plastic they don't dry but if I leave them unpressed they ripple.... Eeerrrrr. Do yours dry because the wood allows access to air? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Lara.

  • @mrgregcat
    @mrgregcat 6 років тому +1

    I'm curious about figuring the size of paper vs the size of the panel so that there's a consistent edge around the paper art. Also how in the world do you make sure the paper is square and even on the panel when gluing it down. I have a lot of Bob's videos and books and watch the blasts, but am a math dunce and have troubles getting my work glued down on the panel evenly and square.

    • @ReviewsAndMore9
      @ReviewsAndMore9 6 років тому +3

      It looks to me like he deckles (or cuts) the paper originally to 1/4" smaller all around than the wood panels he uses, but that depends on how much of a border you want. You might want less border on small works and larger borders on larger works. He generally paints on the same sizes for his smaller pieces, so he always knows what size the panels are and trims his paper accordingly. If you visit his website (robertburridge.com), you can pull up his pages of original small paintings to see what sizes he generally uses (like 6x9 or 10x10 etc). As for making sure the paper is even on the panel, he just eyeballs it. If you can get one corner looking good, generally speaking the others will be good too, assuming you cut your paper properly. If you lay the panel down on the paper first and draw around it, you just need to make sure you cut the paper smaller than your outline, depending on how large a border you want. You can also try putting the matte medium on 1/2 of the sheet only and working with only half the surface at a time; then when you are certain all is well, put the medium on the rest of the paper and panel with more confidence. Just a thought. He has a video on how he deckles his paper you might want to watch - ua-cam.com/video/QaG6zUVpxJ8/v-deo.html. It's just a matter of measuring everything first carefully and making sure of your work before cutting. Click on the "Videos" tab at the top of this page and scroll through his videos to find all his videos.

      Check the sizes available at Cheap Joes or Blick and then tear the paper slightly smaller in size ..about an inch both directions and that should work! For example if your panel is 12x12" a common size then rip your paper 11x11"

    One question. You show us how to glue the paper art to the gatorboard, but then how do you glue it to the wood panel? The same glue ? It's going to be on top like the same size? Or leaving 1/2 inch too?
