Wow. Love love the vlog & the history. My grandfather fought in France World War One at the age of 16. He was tall & got away with lying about his age. He was in the English army & was from Leicester. I have a photo of him in France Listening to you I was amazed he survived. Your right about being young & not interested in his story & off course I wasn’t into history then as I am as I got older. How I wish I had asked ? He was in the 2nd world war with Australia. Again lied about his age to get in. I have his records for 2nd. His first world one records were destroyed during the2nd world war. Thanks for a fantastic vlog The scenery, market places & buildings are amazing. What a beautiful country is France. Cheers Lynne Victoria Australia 🇦🇺🐨👍🏻😍
That’s amazing - I am sure there will be a way if tracking his military record with his name and regiment etc somehow The First World War was brutal ( they all are ) but I think it was the stalemate and just sending men out It hit us a few times on this trip when you are faced with personal stories Thanks for watching
Yea it was a massive market I have to say and an impressive backdrop and highly recommend going on a Saturday when I assume they are held regularly Thanks for watching and commenting
Hi there, great watch, those tunnels were amazing, it seemed a very good tour, quite moving, so sad the amount of lifes lost. Assas looks a nice place, I love the colourful markets, so glad you got parked OK. Look forward to the next episode 👍🐸
I still get goosebumps all over when I rewatch the bit where all the shadows exit the tunnel. Like you say so sad so many lost their lives, and still happening today 😔 Jane
@getawaygeese I know you said in a previous comment that you would like to visit Poland, I visited Auschwitz while I was there last year, wow that so worth it. I wouldn't want to go again, but so glad I went, l don't mind admitting it, I was moved to tears. Yes, Poland is a fantastic country, the Baltic coast, Gdynia, Sopot, Gdansk beautiful. Then the forests, lakes and the mountains in the south. You must go. 👍🐸
What an amazing museum! The war experience so well portrayed…thanks for sharing! I really appreciate the lengths you go to, to include the history of where you’re traveling. Since I’m a backpacker, I travel on foot…it’s a fantastic way to really get a feel of the country you’re in and its people. I love that you cover a short distance each day, (about what I do on trail by foot,) and leave time to actually explore.
It’s one of the biggest lessons - you always think you have to drive 3 hours when in reality a different view and maybe history is just around the next corner. It’s taught us to slow down and when you do history can be absorbed easily. Jane does a lot more reading than I do mind you lol
That was very interesting. France is great for all that kind of stuff, especially if one has an interest in the two wars - like I do. Keep it up. Many thanks.
Great video. I'd ( Tina) would be a complete mess if id experienced that tunnel. Overwhelming to think of all those men cut diwn as they emerged. Must have been utterly terrifyingly 😢
Yes they do it so well and it pulls you into the personal stories …. The numbers killed with little gain is huge and we couldn’t get our head round it Thanks for watching
@@getawaygeesewe are all well but sadly getting older😢I have been meaning to send you an update on our van and Dark Orchard I will get around to it soooon.. 😂😂
I hear many Van lifers speaking about heat in summer months. What about solar powered mini fans which you can clip onto the inside of the car and each have one because they are so small.
I guess it’s all down to the solar panels and where they go driving in the day - we do use usb powered ones but that just pushes the warm air around - what I created pulled in colder night air whereas just a fan in a van is moving hot air around Thanks for watching and above all commenting as it’s a great discussion
My reason for wanting to go to France is to visit a WW2 pilot’s grave at Méharicourt. It looks about an hour south of Arras, so this was so interesting to watch and thank you. The midgenet looks a very good idea. X
Such an interesting tour and stuff I never even knew about. Very thought provoking too. Looked a very lovely town where the market was and you wouldn't know it had been involved in the war.
Yep I know you love history you would of been impressed at the place and whilst it’s a city it also feels relaxed Trust you are well - thanks for watching
@@getawaygeese we are well, thank you. Just got stuff going on with family members being ill unfortunately, not my sister, she's OK, but my brother and also his wife too and with Nanook as well, I've just found it hard to get any editing done or to have the focus to watch much YT either. It's been a pretty crap couple of years unfortunately. But I'm trying to get back into it again so I will hopefully be watching and commenting more again.😊 Hope you're both well too and had a great Christmas.
Another really great video, interesting , informative and lovely to watch. Have you been to Guernsey or Jersey? We think you would love the history there. We also enjoyed the cliff dwellings near the Bergerac area of France. A Google search will bring them up.
We have been to guernsey before we got Harry and I went as a child on a family holiday - loved the place. Never been to Jersey though Will look out for the cliff dwellings when we’re on that area Thanks for watching and commenting
A great tour & history, I think the hat was the right way, it was your head pointing in the wrong direction 🤭 The market was wonderful & the buildings, how was the fresh pasta you bought from the market? Lovely video, Em 💜
Not looked at it that way lol 😂 the market was brilliant and huge - thanks for watching - we eat the fresh pasta in the next episode - at 12 euros it had to be brilliant
Hi Jane and Stew, another informative video, the lives of all those young men lost in that war was tragic. The selection of cakes and macarons always make my mouth water.
Good morning, Good morning! the General said, when we met him last week on our way to the Line. Now the soldiers he smiled at, are most of 'em dead, And we're cursing his staff for incompetent swine. He's a cheery old card, said Harry to Jack, as they slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack. But he did for them both, with his plan of attack. The General, by Siegfried Sassoon.
Great vid! So much better than the usual Vanlife bloggers' rubbish we get on here so often! Thanks for sharing the experience with us.
Can’t tell you how much that’s put a smile on our faces - we try really hard to improve our quality and get our content - well enjoyable
Thank you and have a great weekend
I agree that I appreciate history more now then when I was younger. Take care Gill
Thanks for watching and above all commenting
You are so right about history becoming more important as you get older.
You always worry if the next generations will get some of this recent history
Thanks for watching
Great 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I’m really loving this series so far... lovely vlogs thank you for sharing with us ❤.
Well thanks for coming along with us 😊. Glad you are enjoying it. Jane

Loving this series of vlogs. The history the food just great.
Glad you are enjoying - we always hope we get the balance right
Just love you two! The way you make fun of each other.. obviously still SO much in Love!
Thanks we have a lot of ‘banter’ I have to say and we also have put moments but we’re solid - thanks for watching and above all commenting
Awwww thank you. Not bad for 22 years in. I'm not sure what the put moments are but they don't sound as much fun as the banter moments 🤔. Jane
Great to see the Wellington tunnels. A lot has changed there since we went. The audiovisual etc look so good. Must go back.
Texted while experience was well done and as I get it’s down to the tour guide - thanks for watching
Lovely vlog again. Thanks for sharing, appreciate your approach, content & the delivery of your visit& tour.
Thank you so much. We are pleased to hear you've enjoyed it - jane 😊
Really enjoyed that guys. Those tunnels are simply amazing and that market looked good as well. Thanks for sharing.👍❤️
Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for watching - the market was huge split across two squares
Fabulous video. Everyone makes mistakes Stew. Nobody loves a smart Arras.
😂 indeed thanks for watching and not arrasing me
Wow those sprawling squares filled with markets in Arras look like they are worth a visit. Another great video!
Yea it was a massive market I have to say and an impressive backdrop and highly recommend going on a Saturday when I assume they are held regularly

Lovely place all in all!
Beautiful friendly feel to the place and so much character to the buildings especially as it was at the centre of many battles in both wars
That was very interesting. France is great for all that kind of stuff, especially if one has an interest in the two wars - like I do. Keep it up. Many thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it - north France is as you say rich of history but they do it do well to - thanks for watching
Tour looked really well done. Agree about history becoming more important as you get older. Pleased you made it to Arras. 👍😊
Great place Arras you two would love it if ever you get over - history is fascinating
