  • DIY (Do it yourself) Learn how to make these cute Plastic Shrink Charms from Recyclable Plastic containers step by step. Perfect as Christmas ornaments, Valentine's Sweet Gift, Mother's Day, Father's day, cute gifts and charms. Its a really fun craft that uses things you most likely have at home already. Trace your favorite art, color it in with permanent markers (sharpie), cut it out with scissors and watch it shrink away in your oven! Its such a fun craft to make! You can then turn them into sweet charms to accessorize your bags, bracelets, keys and more! Which one was your favorite? I def love my Starbucks Charm and Pikachu of course and the Pokeball charm with Snorlax and the Donut and Pusheen Cat and...lol Enjoy watching them shrink and I hope I made this DIY tutorial easy to follow along. CAUTION: Oven and Plastic Charms can get very hot in the process of shrinking. Please have adult supervision and help. Safety First! Thank you =)

    To check if the plastic works, check the recycle sign and if it has 6 in it, It will work.
    You're welcome. :)

    Tip- if you don't want the colors interfering with the black outline, you can color on the other side!

    Hi I have done this craft before and it totally works I found out that as long as you use #6 plastic it will shrink perfectly. To check what plastic you have look at the lid or the bottom of whichever container you have and there should be a little triangle on the container and inside the triangle there is a number 6. Every plastic company uses a certain grade of plastic and as long as you use the #6 it will work. I hope this helps. I go to my local dollar store and buy those aluminum disposable cake pans that have the clear plastic lids. The lids on those are #6 plastic :D and there cheap!!!!

    For everyone wanting to know about the type of plastic. I've done an experiment. Not all no. 6 plastic works. Some of them did but not all. I suggest you just try a small piece of what you have, in the oven before you start. That way you will know if the one you have works or not.

      I've been wondering too and I found some answers here: www.favecrafts.com/Friendly-Plastic/Are-Shrinky-Dinks-Safe
      Shrinky Dinks and other shrink plastic crafts are safe because the oven temperatures are low enough that toxins like dioxin are not released. Dioxins form at very high temperatures, typically above 700 degrees Fahrenheit. Many people see the plastic melting in the oven and worry about harmful chemicals, but shrink plastic crafts use much lower temperatures. Many will also be relieved to find out that shrink plastic does not cause ecological damage.
      It's true that the smell of shrink plastic is unpleasant. Unpleasant, but not harmful. Be prepared for the fumes and consider working on shrink plastic crafts in a well ventilated area.

    Wow, this is great! I always wanted to do Shrinky Dinks since I was a kid. I was looking at some Kuromi and Chococat stuff that was rare and realized that I could make my own. I looked for a Shrinky Dinks how to video and found yours. I happen to have a black sharpie, colored pencils and a plastic container that I ate platanos from. Thanks 😄

  • @Patcrochets
    @Patcrochets 7 років тому +10

    If your are using recycled plastic, you want to use only the number 6 plastic. you find the number inside a triangle, usually on the bottom of the container. you can also find shrink film or plastic or shrinky dinks on Amazon at a reasonable price.

    you could outline on one side and then flip the plastic and colour from the back so you don't have to worry about smearing the ink and also it creates a cool 3d effect if you play around with having the details on one layer and the colour on the other side. I used to do this when I was a kid and you can even used coloured plastic

    I don't have a toaster oven so I was wondering if you could use a regular oven ?

    • @gusterhero7100
      @gusterhero7100 7 років тому +13

      probably it's just it would really be an inconvenience to have to warm up the huge oven for only a few seconds of use. Soooo I suggest that if you try it, you make big batches all at once. Not just a few.

      i would assume not, im almost positive that nail polish is flammable. You could always sand the plastic and then use colored pencils.

    • @hlrondir
      @hlrondir 6 років тому +12

      You can, but you need to use sharpie for the outline, then cook it. Apply nailpolish when cool...

    • @PsychoMantisss
      @PsychoMantisss 6 років тому +9

      Nail polish is flammable so if you do decide to color it that way it would have to be AFTER baking and not before. I’m unsure if it will yellow or make it sticky after a certain amount of time has passed as it does when used on polymer clay (which is a plastic clay in a sense) so keep that in mind as well. Using UV resin might be a better idea.

    @craftsNstuffBamma 7 років тому +1

    I've had not the best of luck with #6. I really appreciate your video though. At least some of my shrinks come out just fine and that's great, since I'm just reusing plastic. One thing I've found with #6 (that's what I call it), it is best to do small items. The larger things either curl up and don't cure or I can't get them flat no matter how hard I try. But, as I said, it still pays and it's so much dang fun! Thanks!
