When the main characters are saving the world what are the background characters supposed to do?
At first it started like an extension of the Burned Soil romhack, but I added that much shit and changed that many things that it has become its own thing now.
Team Shooting Star is a low profile team who witnessed the beginning of the war first hand, and as they saw the world crumble down, so did their relationship. Firefly (shinx) became obsessed with fighting in the war, making sure the Grass continent wins, and when she learned that her partner, Oran (charmander), didn't feel the same, she found no other option than leaving him behind, crossing the sea without him.
It's been a few months now, and Firefly seems to be wandering with no direction.
But suddenly she crosses paths with a charizard from the Air continent, a rival team! Charizard attacks and charges against her, and she tries to fight back, but she can't. That charizard reminds her of someone.
I speedran the SHIT out of this one. almost didn't even sleep at night...I could say I've learned my lesson and bit more than I could chew, but I finished exactly the day I thought I would finish. the only thing I wanted was posting it on my birthday. And I did it. So it will happen again.

It definitely can be. I draw extra frames, which is what I think they did in the video. It can be hard to time. Adding to many frames can slow it down too much while adding to little or in the wrong areas can make things look awkward. They really did an amazing job👍
I love how their personalities kind of reflect in their lines! The charmanders are more clean where the lion Pokémon (forgot the name! Haha!) are more scratchy!
If you still forget, the other Pokémon is Shinx.

Firefly (Shinx)'s outlines only really get scratchy once the two get into their first fight, which might be relating to her obsession with battling and winning the war, and the outlines get smoother again on Firefly in the last shot, but not on the fabric representing what she'd been tunneling for

Also, Shinx is more inspired by linx than lion.
There's a subtle detail I noticed in the facial expression of Firefly at 1:34 and at 2:36. The first is the actual expression; the second appears to be what Oran believes Firefly's expression was. It really strikes home how each character felt differently about the relationship.
Well at 1:27 Firefly did initially close her eyes
So she clearly had some emotional attachment, but she quickly changed her focus after the start of the farewell hug... she definitely initially viewed the relationship differently to Oran though.
She definitely had more emotional attachment than she thought though considering she literally can't bring herself to fight the charizard at the end... Shinx actually imagines Oran's shadow and tries to jump at it at 2:23 but Charizard already destroyed it by the time she's going towards it
Now hear me out: what if it's the other way around?
What if the facial expression at 1:34 is the one Firefly thought she had, while the one at 2:36 is her real emotions breaking through? Hoping and pleading with herself that it doesn't end like this and that they can act like this fight didn't happen when they meet again.
There's also the bit with Bittercold glowing and fiercely clutching Dark Matter before the next scene starts. Both of these things are the culmination of Pokemon's negative feelings, and could be showing Firefly's fear and pain of losing Oran, while the first expression is her trying to bury those feelings and focus on something else
I honestly took it as, 1:34 was how she felt at the time--that she was more focused on what she had to do, and her determination to do it even if it meant leaving her friend behind. And, 2:38 was how she 'thinks' of that goodbye much later on, now that (more than anything) she just misses her friend and wished she didn't let him go.
The framing scenes make it seem like it's her reflecting on when she and her friend were together, and finally seeing that good she had at the time was the important part, instead of the conflict she let consume her and make her lose sight of it.

It took me like ten watch-throughs before I noticed how Firefly's lineart changes to become sketchy when they become obsessed with fighting (and the other fighting Pokemon's are sketchy as well), but Oran's stayed smooth (along with the turtwig and piplup's), and now I am even more amazed by this. And then Firefly's lines being smooth again at the end-
You animated a whole song, extremely proud of you! The art and animation is awesome. Never played PMD but I could easily understand the plot.
You really should play it! The newest one is a remake of the first one but with 3D on SWITCH
Arguably the best thing to come out of pokemon, undeniably good story for every game. If you like pokemon and quality story, don't wait and play the games.
@@Nobody-yj8yq Eh, I had a bit of a hard time getting into the plot of Super, and GtI is reasonably solid with a few personal gripes about the final few story beats, but Rescue Team and Explorers are absolutely the brightest gems in the *entire* Pokemon IP. I think they just got a bit too "gimmicky" with magnagates and looplets, and focused more on interesting concepts than truly fleshing out the games' overarching stories. (the most interesting section of Super _is_ the different islands, showcased in the above animation, and iirc it's the shortest arc in the game because you only need to visit 1-2 islands before you start reaching endgame) Super also has the *worst* balance of the entire PMD franchise due to the looplet system and I will die on that hill.
@@firekirby123 For me the story of Super and GTI is still reasonably good and follows PMDs general theme which i enjoy alot. The gimmicks were fun i think as well, they were broken that's true lol, but extremely enjoyable. But ultimately it boils down to its simply way better compared to the mainline games in mechanics and story IMO, so im not harsh on it tbh. That and nostalgia
@@Nobody-yj8yq I will grant that the 3DS games added one of the better long-standing mechanics with the move level-up system, which is the most enjoyable thing about the newer games. (and something I was stoked to see carried over into the Rescue Team remake) Aside from the looplet system from Super, yes, I will agree that mechanically the latter games are much better system-wise. But story-wise... eh? The first two games had an *amazing* way to get the player personally invested in each, with an underlying mystery surrounding their past life as a human that pushes a lot of the major plot beats forward. I just don't think the latter two have that to the same degree. GtI is fine, I think it actually gets a bad rap more often than not. But one of the biggest things that personally irked me about Super's story the most was how it felt like an unoriginal amalgam of the story from all the previous games, solely meant to cash in on pandering to the largest common denominator of fans. Believe me, I'm not immune to nostalgia, Rescue Team DX is currently my favorite game in the series so far, and that's just a retread of the original. But with Super... I dunno, it felt like they laid it on way too thick to the point where it became distracting. imo, the best thing to come out of Super was Espurr, and even they're done pretty dirty.
I can’t express how incredible this is. The art, the emotion, everything. The crazy part is, this is only the beginning. We are getting a front row seat to what is going to be one of the most popular animation channels on this damn platform.

Most of this isn't canon to any of the games. The artist combined the settings of PMD Explorers, Gates to Infinity, and Super MD to make their own story.
Slight spoilers:
0:11 - 0:24 is the guild (Wigglytuff's Guild) from the Explorers games
0:25 and 2:42 this recurring snowflake thing is the Bittercold, the final boss from Gates to Infinity. If i recall correctly, it symbolizes a manifestation of the coldness in everyone's hearts.
The different continents mentioned in the description as the warring entities are references to the locations in Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon. The shinx is fighting for the grass continent, the flag at 0:27
It's also mentioned in the description that it is inspired by a romhack, which I haven't played but might explain the premise a bit more.

I know this song is mostly about Gates and Super but the bit at 2:00 where the Shinx has a flashback to the Charmander while fighting the Charizard reminds me of a moment in EoS that I experienced where while fighting a Sceptile, my character suddenly thought about Grovyle and what had happened to him in the future and if he had come back despite what happened like we had. This caused my character to waste their turn and the Sceptile then took that opportunity to chunk like a third of my health. I only ever encountered it in one playthrough and I'm not sure exactly what caused it but that moment has stuck with me.
I love how firefly’s line goes from clean then scratchy! It’s like when it goes scratchy it could mean her obsession with the war! I absolutely loved this.
I love how charmander evolving and shinx not evolving shows how charmander has moved on from the past and isn't the same person since she left, but shinx still hasn't changed and is still holding on to what they once had and her old ways

And 2:23 shows that it is charmander bc an outline of him is shown

@@EdjNovastar Pretty sure it's a different charizard. Charmander didn't want to fight at all. He also joined a team and there's none of that team there, nor is there any indication that that team was whatever flag Charizard had. Charizard is crushing the outline of Charmander because it reminds her of him.

i LOVE how the pokemon involved in the war are differentiated from those not by their heavily shaking/messy lines. and firefly's lines changing back when she decides to stop fighting is such a wonderful touch! fantastic work!! keep it up
Oh my gosh I love this! The expressions portrayed by Firefly in her fight against the Charizard are awesome (especially when it cuts to her and Oran)

These mystery dungeon animations give me so much joy
I can definitely see multiple fanfics of these two and many different ways it could end for them both. The choice of song, the story of Firefly and Oran, together it leaves an impact of emotion I can get behind. You can see the hurt in Oran's eyes in the bit that Firefly realizes who she's fighting and the life she threw away. Really amazing animation!

PMD is and will always be one’s of the best Pokémon games ever played I’ll never forget my starters charmander and skitty next to heart gold and gen 5 , the story is just too good . We need another PMD remake

I'm not totally sure why, but that last shot of the Bittercold clamping down on Dark Matter always gives me jitters no matter how many times I rewatch this! It's like it's getting fired up or activated, as it senses a conflict between two former friends its violent climax and feeds off of that negative energy-
As someone who has loved PMD since the first game, cant express how happy i am to see such fan projects like this with such passion and love put into it

I can't help but really be drawn in the story told in the animation. Its so well told through the imagery itself. Especially since I've played both Super and Infinity, so it has me thinking between what started to the war or Firefly's mindset through all of this. What really is on my mind after watching this is what is going through her head, which is hard to pick up outside the points where the mask falls off. Meanwhile, a lot of her expressions are unreadable or hard to figure out, which I actually love. It makes her seem like someone who's very guarded with her emotions and quite stubbornly so. Hard to drive off the course she picks even if its someone who's good friends with her such as Oran. I can't even imagine what a war would do to someone with those characteristics, who then loses the only emotional support she seems to have. How long was she gone to that conflict? And if she made it back, what sort of environment did she return to? It was pretty clear that she ended up desperately missing what she had before and seemingly cast aside the war as well. I don't know if there'll ever be a sequel to this animation, but even if its not, its amazing that such an animation could intrigue me so much with its visual storytelling, the lyrics of the song chosen, and just an amazing premise in general. Fantastic work!

I genuinely have no idea how to describe the amount of effort I can tell you put into this. How you tell the story visually, facial expressions, and the animation in general, just wow. I seriously am so blown away by your animations, your storytelling is extremely well executed and even though I know absolutely nothing about PMD I can completely understand the emotions of the characters. Their expressions and movements are super pleasing to look at, and I’m especially in LOVE with the action scenes. The fight between the shinx and the charizard specifically use such great angles and the effects like the smoke are SO well animated. Actually, EVERYTHING is so well animated!! I just adore every bit of this. I was able to connect with the characters immediately, and even though I don’t understand everything I can still get a great sense of what’s going on here. You did such an amazing job on absolutely everything!!

I mean you don't really need to know anything about PMD to enjoy this because the PMD stuff is mostly just the setting. In this animation the characters and their conflict is whats taking center stage. If you've played the games you'd recognize little things like the rescue team badges that appear in all of the games, the armbands that represtent the Grass Continent and Air Continent from Super Mystery Dungeon or recognize the Bitter Cold from Gates to Infinity (which was kind of a symbol for negative emotions and distrust in the world), but other than small little nods like that its pretty self contained.
I have no worlds, truly incredible, this deserve way more credit thant what it will actually get.

He knows it’s time to move on (Oran drops the Grass Continent armband indicating he's not on any sides of the war anymore and isn't partaking in any of it)
She’s been waiting for this moment for so long (Firefly's been waiting for a chance to devote more time to the war... even if that means she has to leave Oran)

Omg, this animation looks so cool and also sad. I want to learn more, seriously I know what's it like to lose friends and to have a twist where you're suddenly against them. It hurts a lot and I want to learn so much more about this story

As someone who first played pmd eos as a fire type with a shinx buddy I may have been a tprchic but this was still beyond nostalgic honestly
The fact you almost made me tear up - someone who doesnt really cry like at all, with a story I don’t understand and haven’t seen before at all, that means you have some real story telling talent in your animation. WOW this is stunning! The amount of visual storytelling is phenomenal, I get a really good sense of the struggles each character faced and how the passing of time changed things. Not to mention how incredibly dynamic all the movement is during battle sequences, specifically during 1:52-2:21. All the emotion and action displayed really builds up the climax. first of all this is absolutely GORGEOUS, i'm always blown away by your work, but i'm SO ECSTATIC to see a shinx oc animated so beautifully!!!!! shinx is my absolute favorite pokemon and my god, you really did it justice here. will be rewatching many times

It's really good, is what I'm trying to say. Once again you make me fall in love with these characters in this world you've made.
It's amazing how well you protrayed all of the thoughts, feelings and emotions the characters experience, without any dialogue, with just a song and an animation. PMD is my favourite type of Pokémon game as well as the series that got me into Pokémon 12 years ago, so seeing amazing fan content like this makes me so happy. Keep up the fantastic work!

At the start, Firefly is going to fight a charizard, but then it cuts to memories with Oran.
They're just kinda goin around places.
It cuts to a fight scene. Since Oran seems a bit shocked at the sudden change, I'm going to assume he was also thinking about their memories.
Oran doesn't want to fight, obviously by the lyric "Cause all this constant fighting doesn't feel like us"
"She told him she wouldn't leave, then she did" is obviously Firefly probably wanting to stay with Oran, but crossing the sea without him.
"Maybe he wanted more" might be Firefly's thoughts on leaving Oran, he might have wanted more time to be friends, because there's not much time to be friends when a war's going on.
"I fell for someone you but she's just another girl that looks like you" Might be Firefly thinking that the charizard she's fighting reminds her of Oran.
"What's love if it's not true?" In this context, It's probably a friendship love than a romantic love. Basically: She might see this Charizard as Oran, and she wants to be friends with this Oran, but they're fighting, and it just CAN'T BE ORAN. He's from the Air Continent, an enemy.

Trying my best to analyze the story and symbolism, for fun:
0:00 Very interesting it starts at the end, suggesting maybe this is all a flashback of memories. (If not just an intro.)
0:02 Forms a team with a friend as explorers.
0:06 Shown laughing and having a good time together. Times were good.
0:07 An unexpected attack or escalation. "Team Shooting Star is a low profile team who witnessed the beginning of the war first hand"
0:14 News of this attack is delivered to leadership. (or simply spreads)
0:16 Resources are low, perhaps due to times being hard or due to panic.
0:19 Pokemon panic.
0:24 The Bittercold is shown, confirming that negative emotions are on the rise. It's fairly unformed.
0:27 The grass continent goes to war.
0:32 Both join the fight.
0:40 She becomes obsessed with the war. However, with the description, it might just be wanting a sense of purpose. He, however, is hesitant.
0:51 He raises his eyebrow at her deciding to fight. Matching the lyrics, it seems this course of actions was unexpected of her.
0:55 Fighting air continent.
0:57 Notice how he tries to grab her. I'm thinking it was to protect her, not realizing she actually wants to fight.
0:59 These purple armbands might be Mist continent flags. If that's the case, it's more than just two continents fighting.
1:00 He's shocked at her actions and drive.
1:02 Questioning his role in the war, reflecting on his own flag and continent. "her partner, Oran (charmander), didn't feel the same"
1:04 This bit is interesting for later. A fallen flag for the air continent drops at her feet. "Firefly (shinx) became obsessed with fighting in the war, making sure the Grass continent wins"
1:12 "and as they saw the world crumble down, so did their relationship."
1:38 "she found no other option than leaving him behind, crossing the sea without him" She leaves to the air continent.
2:04 "But suddenly she crosses paths with a charizard from the Air continent, a rival team! Charizard attacks and charges against her, and she tries to fight back, but she can't. That charizard reminds her of someone." Note it says: "It's been a few months now, and Firefly seems to be wandering with no direction."
2:23 This could just be syncing with the music, but I also wonder if this is saying goodbye to her warmongering personality as well as just missing her friend.
2:27 Oran joins another team hesitantly, not wanting this all to happen again. It might even be him moving on, while she has not.
2:31 An emphasised bright, positive overlay is given to these memories. I'd say this is =both= characters reflecting on the good times.
2:37 A different expression this time. Someone suggested that the first time it shows it's her real expression, while this is the expression oran believed she had. It also might be her looking back and realizing she was misguided, and was sadder to lose her friend than she ever was devoted to the war, if only in retrospect.
2:42: The Bittercold again, but much more developed. Things have only gotten worse since before, and the world has grown much more negative. This says a lot, it shows the state of the world, but also her realizing how bad it's gotten.
2:44 The Grass Continent flag is battered and torn. The grass continent is no better than before, and the war has taken its toll.
2:47 With the flash of The Bittercold, the flag, and now finally this scene of her reflecting on her journey...
2:28 ...She realizes her mistakes, her "directionless" lack of purpose, and abandons the war.
There's a lot of little details in this, I had fun looking through them and interpreting them. If the creator reads this, I'd love to hear what was going through your mind for each scene!
The Snubbull in the shot at 0:59 is also wearing a yellow armband for the Sand continent. It's possible the Water continent is involved too and this is a full-blown world war (looking at it again, the armband on the Charizard looks lighter than the ones on the Totodile and Poochyena, they might be from the Water continent). Also worth noting the Bittercold has Dark Matter's core in the center of it (which makes sense, the two entities are quite similar and are most likely related in some way)
I’ve been thinking about commenting on one of your videos for a while now, and I’m finally doing it. What can I say? This animation’s great! The emotion is there, the movements, the song choice, just all of it is so impressive. I never write comments. But I feel that a piece of art like this is worth so much, that I should share my opinion.
this is amazing! i love the detail of how the pokemon fighting in the war have shaky or messy lines, but when Shinx takes off the band and stops fighting in the war their lines go back to normal. This animation has re inspired me to start practicing animation again, so please keep up the amazing work!
I hardly watch PMD’s like this and when I do I hardly know what’s going on but in this one I kinda understood it more than usual!
Super awesome! I got "Boggle" from you on my recommended and you're a fantastic animator!
I also really enjoy the references here to Super and Gates. A lot of people grew up with Explorers and the PMD content gets awfully explorers-centric at times. I like it a lot better when PMD content is referencing the -series- as a whole, not a single title. I ~love~ the symbolism of The Bittercold here, and the continent flags are a nice touch. Actually, the symbolism is just incredible all throughout it.

Boggle, and now this, have inspired me to start thinking about making my own animation. D&D rather than PMD, but it hadn't really clicked with me until now the potential for the stories I could tell with the medium. Keep up the fantastic work! ❤
I love the change of pace with this one compared to boggle, this one hits the other end of the spectrum when it comes to emotions, its indescribable, and I love it. The animation is amazing especially considering it’s very long and rushed. Outstanding work, would love to see more lore and or even a universe set up for all these characters.

I literally rewatched it 7 times frame by frame. What a masterpiece.
Except for all others, that people have already mentioned, I love those timecodes:
0:20 - the bug pokemon was already crying before it was eaten by a bird, and then how eevee ran onto another pokemon
2:24 - he was actually jumping to a shadow of Oran, which was already destroyed by charizard, and went past it.
2:26 - New Oran's friends are pokemons from your avatar icon.
2:36 - The moment before everything went wrong, the last moment of peace and happy life(in 0:07 was the same animation but with an explosion, the start of the war)

Pretty sure 0:20 is a Team Tasty cameo. A fan favorite gag side team in Explores of Darkness/Time/Sky made up of a Wurmple and a Swellow where the Wurmple was convinced his teammate would eventually eat him. Swellow values his teammate too much to even consider it and was shocked and horrified when Wurmple finally told him that's what the name was about (Swellow just thought it was a cool sounding name).

I have no clue who these characters are, but I already love them.
This is genuinely one of the best animations I’ve ever seen. And the music? Impeccable. You can just feel the emotion from the mid point when the Charmander took off the green wristband, to the final fight where he’s evolved and matured into his final form, at the cost of joining another team. Tbh I’ve never played PMD. But this? THIS I can understand the plot of. Amazing vid. 10/10.

Although I don't understand the symbolism like you said in the desc, I really enjoy your art and music choice :) You might honestly inspire me to play PMD. Also, you should be an advertisement creator for PMD frfr
