As someone who works for the dealer that sold the most cat trucks in North America I can offer a few details. They did have a cat transmission in them. If they are yellow and say cat then that is a cat transmission, totally different than an Allison and the only part that was actually cat. It is known as a CX31 and is very similar to what is in a cat 745 articulated truck. You could also get an Allison, an Eaton ultra shift or a manual transmission. They also offered a ct15 15 liter engine for a short time but it was not as popular as the CT13. Also there was a short run of CT680 and CT681 chaissis made right at the end of the production and they are a longer and more squared off hood.
The 15L model was a CAT motor Navistar controls. This truck is nothing more than the previous generation of the International HX(94/9900). I drove an HX 621 for a year, and hated every minute of it. That gauge cluster is awful. The cab is a dinosaur. It's a hood on international.
I can tell you right now it’s nothing but a international with a cat motor we own four different internationals from 2016 to 2021. The interior looks just like the 616 models other than having Cat on everything pretty much. The only difference is the hood and the engine. And having Cat wrote on every thing they could.
I worked for a cat dealer as a lube technician and had one. It was always in the shop. If i remember correctly it was at conexpo or mats. They dumped $120k in repairs in it within 7 yrs and then sold it
I drove one of these POS for a company outta Jeffersonville Indiana. The worst thing about them was the Eaton Fuller transmission. The computer never talked to the transmission and would leave you gearless in the middle of intersections all the time Most dangerous vehicles ive ever driven.
Man I remember wanting a daycab CT660 in yellow so bad when they first launched. I loved the design of them in general. The way the hood just slanted downwards with the front fenders, it looked truly next gen. Hopefully in a few years I’ll pick one up off of TruckPaper. Just to own it and use it for daily driving. Friend of mine used to work at cat dealership and I would occasionally ride with him in some of their 660’s. He worked in the undercarriage department so he knew the undersides of the CT Series like the back of his hand.
I only ever saw one of these, then I just forgot about them. It's cool that they had a CD player, 3.5mm aux port, and USB input. The trucks from the 80s to 2000s I've been in have only ever had an AM/FM radio and no sound insulation to hear a phone speaker.😢
There's a reason why intertrashional shut down their north American engine assembly lines!! THEY COULDN'T BUILD AN EMISSIONS COMPLIANT ENGINE THAT STAYED TOGETHER
I drive an International HX which is the CAT CT's twin, they're great trucks love the dash layout and how well laid out the cab is. The Cabin air filter is super easy to get to which is great when your job is dusty like mine is. Damn do they have cold ass A/C too It can be 110 out and I'm freezing with the fan on low. I think they are really tough trucks, just wish they had a little more leg room like the Pete 567s. You really don't see too many of the cat trucks around anymore. I think the vocational market is pretty saturated don't think cat ever really had a chance you were better off just getting an International.
New internationals are garbage international was garbage from day one. The dashes were lacking any real information a real driver needed. The cabs were small. The plastic crap dash was constantly falling apart. The reason why the cabin filters were easy to change was cause the cab was a 13 letter shit spreader and you don’t want to smell all the shit all the time
Very informative video. My local CAT/Challenger AG dealer had all CAT service trucks in the 2011-2017 time frame. I have filmed a yellow CAT day cab hauling corn. New subscriber. Keep up the good work.
CAT = The engine builder who decided to build a truck. Now we know the story. Next, could you do a story on... PACCAR = The truck builder who decided to build an engine.
@@theIronmerchant Thanks! But I really am curious. I heard they just took over CAT's engine operations when they threw in the towel and rebranded them as PACCAR but I don't know how accurate that is.
They became an engine manufacturer when they bought DAF which has made engines for their trucks for a long time. The mx engine has its origins from DAF
CAT agreed to only build vocational trucks that would not compete with Navistar highway truck sales. Customers had asked for a truck built with CAT parts and quality. The original plan was for CAT to supply the short block, and Navistar would put their cylinder head on it. But Navistar said the CAT short block was too expensive. The engine was German with Bosch components. The CT15 engine had a 5 valve cylinder head. The Navistar CEO told engineering to meet emissions without SCR (def). They had a smog waiver for several years but finally the feds said stop, it is never going to pass smog in this form. The engine was hard to work on (serviceability). The high soot level to attempt to meet interim tier 4 was too high, (all manufactuers) and plugged the cooler passages. I believe the Australian model trucks actually had the CAT ACERT engines. The Navistar CEO was canned for this fiasco not meeting emissions. Navistar is now Traton, owned by Volkswagen.
I worked at an Australian CAT dealer in earthmoving but Ive been around trucks all my mechanic life. When released here in 2010 I always said the CT630 was the Sterling replacement for the 2000's but the level of Navistar electronics was one thing that made the platform difficult with configuration and control over software and programming ecm's a hurdle for traditional cat techs and maybe that was a lack of training and understanding! I am finding it a novelty to spot CAT ON-HWY TRUCKs for my FB group of the same name! I often point owners, operators and repairers to the dealer who sold the most of the trucks when they were available I will also make a post for your video too as we did not get the CT660 or 680!
I remember Quinn CAT Rentals had them in their fleets/yards pulling Dovetail lowbeds in the Rental business before switching out to the Kenworth T880. Always wanted to drive one.
I had the pleasure of driving both a CT680 tandem & CT681 tandem w a tag axle, they had loads of power but the interior quality was lacking with lots of vibrating pieces.
Cat got into AG and left it then gets into trucks a leaves ... Back in the 1980s Cat had a chance to buy up IHC and they could have been into Trucks and AG with some decent engine production and just used some of the IH Components from the Pay Line and they would be the largest industrial Products company in the world. But now the Navistar is part of the VW trucks AKA Traton so there are no American Owned Heavy truck Makers Left .
I was at a Truck show in Ireland 3 weeks ago and saw one. That said it was on a well drilling rig and a lot of American trucks come into Ireland with well drilling equipment on them(mainly Freightliner)
The first on road CAT truck to be sold in the world is owned by SRT Logistics in Tasmania, Australia. I see it on the road occasionally still working. Same as an International ProStar.
There is a aftermarket company that puts a sleeper and everything needed for otr trucking on these. Ive seen a couple with actual cat motors swapped in. Also fun fact, last month we had a glitch with our cat E.T software that when ever we would update or wipe the ecm on any C7.1 and up engine it would replace it with the ecm data for the CT13 Cat trucks. It took me atleast 3 hours to find out why a xq230 wouldnt start because its 5th wheel was unlocked before i realized it was a cat et problem.
I had read somewhere that when Caterpillar decided to make these trucks through IH, the Cat design team fought over whether they should only be painted Cat YELLOW, or open it up to customers choice of paint colors....
I always had heard they had wiring harness issues and that to me would be the worst. Back in the day I worked for a fleet that ran Internationals with allision automatic's, a few of them developed the bad habit of downshifting from high to low intermittently, Both dealers just pointed the finger at each other, I had to park them and when I had a little time I would drive one with the laptop on it, finally I caught the fact the trans was losing its speed signal input ,to make a long story short I rolled the dice and replaced the engine harness to the Ecm and that repaired all of them ,Id rather be lucky than good ,Regards
There was exactly one where I live, it spent more time in the shop then it did on the road, part of that was dealer issues. People were watching to see how it worked out before anyone else bought and well a truck that literally spent more time being towed to the dealer then working, well if you were watching that would you buy one?
These where built at the former Navistar plant in Garland, Texas. I kmoew because I worked there and built them. They where based on the International 5000 truck.
We had a 13' model and it was really pretty good up until this year. It needed a transmission and that was a disaster to get. Ever since it was replaced it been one thing after another.
As a cat dealer technician... get about 2 or 3 a month... worst part is a company bought around 100 of these from auction, everything I've fixed has basically been warranty to some degree, stay away from this junk.
Automatic transmissions were not necessary and Allison. There was actually a cat transmission in them as well. Known as a cx31, and basically the only part of the truck actually built by cat if equipped.
Maybe I am mistaken, but Cat doesn't seem to do well outside of construction equipment. They sold their tractor line to AGCO, and then the joint combine line with Claas went to AGCO, and they subbed out the over the road trucks to Navistar. They made some $ on the first 2 deals, but not a home run. Last deal was summed up in the video. Go figure.
They made like 4 different style cab models I believe.. I think these first with the sloped hood. Then these with a straighter hood the c680. Also a aero sleeper and a c681 which is very similar.. I like the looks of them..
@@theIronmerchant I think it's called the ct630.. it's decent looking for one of those sleeper aero highway trucks. I always thought it was interesting that CAT came out with this around the same time that they decided to stop making on-highway engines because of emissions regulations. Which kind of came back to bite them because off-highway was soon forced to adopt the stricter emission standards that on-highway had to. Which has always made me wonder why they didn't get back into on-highway engine making. There are millions of trucks with CAT engines in them hauling stuff all over the world. I find it hard to believe that the on-highway engine division of the company wasn't making good money.
@philipward7846 Naw. Paccar is the only one who started making their own engine (and inferior at that). Cummins was always there. Volvo/Mack were already there. Detroit was already there. Mercedes/Freightliner was already there. Navistar already there. CAT thought they would be able to make off-highway indefinitely without Tier 4 final. Which for the longest time, was just for on-highway. They didn't expect the off-highway regs and so they pulled out of on-highway. PLENTY of customers would option a CAT over an OEM or Cummins engine. They just gave up on that segment too soon and I think it has bit them in the butt.
I was still in middle school when these things came out and even back then the first time I saw one I immediately recognized it as an International. Kinda disappointing, but also a really neat part of truck history.
I know several people that sell trucks. For years most of them pushed the cat engine. Then cat decided to get into competition with the company's that was selling the cat engine for them. 4 of the guys that I know wouldn't sell cat engines anymore and cat quit building truck motors!
1st came out I saw 1 in a publication magazine. I thought hey this is going be very interesting until few years later someone told me it was a corn binder with a Cat sticker on it. If Cat just picked Mack or some other. Them older International Tks was some pretty good Tk’s you just couldn’t missabuse them too bad over suspension set up or put homemade walking beams under them. My area most was used off road mainly just maybe 20 miles on road. I seen few Mack’s I guess with a glider kit had Cat engines now them Tks turned heads hearing that loud Jake a coming. All my experience was with the more heavy equipment end of the business up to shovels & draglines. Real old Tk everybody brag on was them old Brockways when I just starting out. I put a Cummins in one them we hardly ever used it basically a spare service lube Tk back years ago. Them old timers really like them old Brock’s.
We have to CT660Ls they are ALRIGHT trucks from the get go. One has a CT13 paired to a CX31, another a CT15 paired to an Eaton 18 speed. The CT13 is a pos. Absolutely no power even after being deleted; wiring harness has issues due to being routed right above the valve cover (heat issues I guess) and the truck can barely pull any hills. It’s really just a hot mess and it’s only got 138k on it. Our CT15 is a unit, once all the 13 letter shit spreader emissions are removed it’s a tank. Ours has 430k and was previously owned by a cat dealer. It’s great. From my understanding the ct15 was a true cat motor unlike the ct13.
The engines were from Navistar, transmissions were CAT which supposedly are superior to Allison. There was plans in 2014 for Caterpillar to build their own design trucks in Victoria, TX with a CAT designed 15 liter, never to be named. The plan almost overnight was shut down, i’m sure sales numbers played a key in this. It was far enough along plans were shared with dealers.
@@JeffreyWindley-n4i actually, I had to change a metal coolant line on my plumbers truck. It was a Navistar part. Both dealers couldn't figure it out, even though it had a International part number on tag. One said it's GM, the other said it's Navistar.
I don’t know why they had such a cluster - - - - because Hendrickson Trucks Made it work well they Bought their cabs from I H Hendrickson Prefered Detroit or Caterpillar over cummins when I started my driving career no one had Hs anymore my contact was rideing with my Dad company he was with had them and as a kid I figured on my own that they used 2076 A FleetStar cabs you could tell by looking at them and the give away was on the Keys the I H symbol LOL the one I cannot figure out is what is on Mack keys ?? Briggs &Stratton lawn mower engines ????????
It looks like a fisher price toy. Sure looks arent everything, but really, they are. Thats why people tolerate kenworth with their sh1tshow electronics.
Oh man, look at all of them Ford parts! 😂 you forgot to walk around it while talking about it. All you did was show 1/3 of the cab and one shot of the engine.
Well they didn’t build a truck…. They branded a truck that thing was 98% navistar/international only Thing that was cat was the logos and the automatic transmission. We hated seeing them pull into the shop when I was at cat
Worst truck I’ve ever driven in my entire career. In the handful of months I drove it I honestly don’t think I went through an entire day without some sort of issue.
Heavy Haul Ct660 CT-15 CX35 autom automatic transmission. 1100 rpm engine pulled 💪 strong! Needed 4:11 finals... was struggling on hills loaded. Lots of wiring issues..speedometer cuts out.. lights stay on .. International ruined Fords truck line, then they ruined CATS ! 😂.. I wouldn't buy one🤦. And you couldn't give me one! Junk truck. I tried it but didn't like it!
Yeah selling that name. I think a lot of people have figured them out. They learned the hard way. The one in the video and all 5 of its brothers are being sold and replaced with western stars.
Cat trucks were turds ! The short time I worked for a Cat dealer, I hated that truck ! The steps were too high and far apart. The gearshift was set back, so you had to reach back somewhat. Not very ergonomic at all.
I work for Cat and we have tier 3 and tier 4 engines in equipment right now I don't see why CAT does not get back into heavy trucks...... The only main reason I think is because they see that government regulation is going to put diesel engines in the trash can and make way for the investment revolution of green electric energy..
They're actually making great strides in diesel technology to not need def anymore. There are still hope for diesels, but probably not in road cars because you just don't need it.
As an exclucicly vat excavation company, i eas excited when they came out with them. But when i found out they didnt offer a 15 liter that killed it for me. Of all the manufacturers to get in bed with to make a truck they picked International. The absolute trucks on the road. We have one as a lube truck at our Cat dealer and its a complete pile.
Does CAT even sell engines anymore? All this emissions, and DEF garbage means more and more older trucks will be rebuilt and rebuilt. Its gonna be the Cubification of cars and trucking if this keeps on going this way. Learn how to weld and fab...

I thought Cat quit making truck engines because of emission regulations tightening?
Nice piece of history. Unfortunately with disappointing results. Shows you where sometimes "staying in your own lane" is the best way to go!
2012 and 2011 was hard years for cat.
you gotta give them credit, though they realize there was a problem and they got the heck out of there
It’s an International work star, even saw a couple Cat yellow MaxxForce 15 …
Really? That’s hilarious. Paint a maxxforce yellow
Well a Max force 15 was a Cat C15 block
Like to have one for a farm to just have to do chores be a cool truck to drive. The truck have to be a standard dump truck.
Seen one of these hauling mix for us
I was still in middle school when these things came out and even back then the first time I saw one I immediately recognized it as an International. Kinda disappointing, but also a really neat part of truck history.
cool dash
If cat hadn't been forced to follow all those def regulations like the other's did no telling what we could have been blessed with
I know several people that sell trucks. For years most of them pushed the cat engine. Then cat decided to get into competition with the company's that was selling the cat engine for them. 4 of the guys that I know wouldn't sell cat engines anymore and cat quit building truck motors!
I remember when these came out, it was a huge thing but yea, i only seen like 3 in real world
Interesting thing about the ct engines they were a cat block with international everything else
Emissions was another thing that killed these things.
Navistar hired a bunch of ex-GM exec's about that time
It has a Mack dash and interior.anyway go sit behind a C-15 6nz. And tell me which has more power and torque torque
SnowRunner has some CAT trucks so there's that *I didn't even know CAT made trucks until I played SR*
If only CAT sold base model 3/4 or 1 ton trucks without any frills lol
Jeez i remember seeing these alot in my area around 2012 last i saw one was in 2023
They are fading out of existence. It’s almost impossible to get any of the interior parts anymore
If it weren’t for navistar defense international would have gone belly up 20 years ago
They were intertrashionals with the Cat name.
That is called a cat trashional
These trucks around the same time as their cat branded Locomotive.
Know cat is trying to get into the pick-up market and try to build the best heavy duty
We got the C15 in Australia
Isn't General Motors building their large trucks the same way, through Navistar?
Well, at least they are a vehicle manufacturer.
Yeah you could be very right. I need to look into that.
Other way around, Navistar is building their CV series trucks through GM.
No international puts their name on gm trucks..you got it backwards
@leejohnson6173 He is right. The only thing on the truck is international is the emblems .
@@JeffreyWindley-n4i actually, I had to change a metal coolant line on my plumbers truck. It was a Navistar part. Both dealers couldn't figure it out, even though it had a International part number on tag. One said it's GM, the other said it's Navistar.
theres one of these thats a roll off truck in my city
I could swear that was about a couple years ago.
Cause in my opinion def screwed up alot of things that could have been even better
I drove a cat water truck in Florida
Oh man, look at all of them Ford parts! 😂 you forgot to walk around it while talking about it. All you did was show 1/3 of the cab and one shot of the engine.
Well they didn’t build a truck…. They branded a truck that thing was 98% navistar/international only Thing that was cat was the logos and the automatic transmission. We hated seeing them pull into the shop when I was at cat
I bet! Nothing worse than working on someone else’s problems. I always heard parts were a nightmare
A CAT branded Navistar.
why breakkdowns? would be cool to see them rehabed as modified RV's.
That would be cool.
@@theIronmerchant save the cats
If you think these trucks are anything but ugly, I don't know what to say to you
There's a local company just put a bunch of them up for sale. I'll have to check prices, my bet is they are way over priced for what they are
Yeah selling that name. I think a lot of people have figured them out. They learned the hard way. The one in the video and all 5 of its brothers are being sold and replaced with western stars.
originally a Volvo
Cat trucks were turds ! The short time I worked for a Cat dealer, I hated that truck !
The steps were too high and far apart. The gearshift was set back, so you had to reach back somewhat. Not very ergonomic at all.
Great idea. Absolute pos in real life. These things were a nightmare
What's "pretty cool" about the interior? Looks like a dusty dump truck interior with a messy driver. Real cool.
It is real cool. Thanks for watching
They were a heavy truck
I work for Cat and we have tier 3 and tier 4 engines in equipment right now I don't see why CAT does not get back into heavy trucks......
The only main reason I think is because they see that government regulation is going to put diesel engines in the trash can and make way for the investment revolution of green electric energy..
They're actually making great strides in diesel technology to not need def anymore. There are still hope for diesels, but probably not in road cars because you just don't need it.
As an exclucicly vat excavation company, i eas excited when they came out with them.
But when i found out they didnt offer a 15 liter that killed it for me.
Then when i goubd out it was an international, well, vat never got 1 dollar from a loyal cat guy.
What a conplete disaster. Cat onhighway trucks failed miserably.
As a cat customer, i have 0 ibtrest in international. A bunch of idiots ruined a great idea
Of all the manufacturers to get in bed with to make a truck they picked International. The absolute trucks on the road. We have one as a lube truck at our Cat dealer and its a complete pile.
I thought the same thing. Too bad they couldn’t have purchased Mack trucks before Volvo did.
Max force 13 junk
From someone who drove International trucks for about 5 years, those are the cheapest piece of shit money can buy.
Does CAT even sell engines anymore? All this emissions, and DEF garbage means more and more older trucks will be rebuilt and rebuilt. Its gonna be the Cubification of cars and trucking if this keeps on going this way. Learn how to weld and fab...
Cornbinder with a Cat hood ornament
a cat pick up 200 grand
Not as good as Kenworth or Mack.
cat wanted to be king just another thing to wear cat brand as with other things cat just big loaders big dozers graders and mine trucks only things realy cat
Cat couldn't even make a good engine no surprise they failed at the making the rest of the truck. Overpriced yellow junk!
