@@Alex-gh3zo hot water is definitely more effective at dissolving fat, oils and moving away surfactants like soap. Try cleaning a pan with congealed fat on it with cold vs hot water alone, the hot water dissolves all the fat. Its the same thing for soap. What's your logic? The only problem i can see with hot water is that sometimes old hot water tanks leach iron and other things into the water and reflective coatings might get stressed by very hot water. Cold water tends to bead off the lens better, but takes longer to dry usually.
@ilovefreeski Hot water is great for washing. Cold water for rinsing. Try making a sink of hot was water and then make a sink of cold water using the same amount of soap. You get far fewer suds and they break down much faster. Cold water is superior for rinsing soap residue.
I have used an ultrasonic cleaning bath for years. Warm water and a drop of washing up liquid. This cleans the nooks and crannies of the hinges and nose grips better than just washing under a running tap.

I use a similar technic to clean my phone screen (but don't put it under running water. Much better than even impregnated tissues for glasses (the type than doesn't harm AR coatings).
As long as you use a gentle detergent like dawn dish soap, it should be safe. And if there's anything on them, like oils, or even something abrasive, the dish soap will create a barrier around it to help prevent scratching, and also to carry it away when rinsing. Less gentle soaps and detergents could be damaging, though. Water to rinse off any particles, and a microfiber cloth might be fine, but you'll want to periodically wash the cloth with a gentle detergent or it will become saturated. You'll also want to shake it before use to ensure it doesn't have any particles on it that could be abrasive.

Thank you for this information. How many times can this be done without affecting coatings on the lenses? In extreme cases (e.g. working with food or oily substances) can this be done daily? Thanks again.
After a year or 2 no matter how the lenses are cared for, the coatings will start to degrade. I wouldn’t do it constantly but only when it is necessary to get the glasses clean if other methods are not working.

Good up to the point of rubbing "glasses" with a cloth. Lenses are now usually more durable plastics which are lighter and have a higher index of refraction. After that, I try to put down the water pressure to prevent splashing, and rinse the glass quickly and check whether there are droplets left. If I have a good soap, it won’t leave any residual water after rinsing once. Then I use a towel and just tap the wet parts of the frame. Did you know that water's considered a solvent? I just wave the glasses under the hot water about 3 seconds, and use a dry fresh wash cloth. Good as new. Been doing that for decades.
To the person posting warning I have cleaned every pair of glasses I ever owned this way my guess would be you have a problem with the water you use needs to be soft or filtered water with no added chemicals especially chlorine fluoride etc
If you have a plastic frame you never use warm or hot water to clean your glasses, that will eventually discolor the frame. Always use cool or cold water.
Yeah, this works, if you have half a dozen interchangeable microfiber cloths like that you wash constantly, that is. They tend to smear whatever is on the glasses no matter what. The best way to completely remove dirt after washing them is using a microfiber *cleaning* cloth, the 30x30ish ones you use for dusting.
Yeah, I have a Ray Ban microfiber cloth that I clean my Aviators with and after some time, if I face the lens in a specific direction, you can see the smear marks of the glass cleaning solution I bought at Sunglass Hut. My theory is that microfiber tend to soak up all the solution or soap and water over time and when it can't soak anymore, it just smears it. So maybe best solution is to clean the cloth depending on the usage. That way you start off with a clean brand new cloth that won't smear, just a suggestion.
I learned about this deep cleaning technique years ago - not here. It works incredibly well because no grime or oil or anything else remains anywhere on the frames or lenses and the lenses clean better with regular lense cleaning solution between these deep cleans. When a regular lense cleaning solution is used, it can be extremely difficult to eliminate streaks in part because oil is inadvertently transferred from the frame over onto the lense. Cleaning the entire thing - lenses and frames - like this removes that oil and grim from the frame and that means there's none that can get on the lenses when they are cleaned. It becomes much easier to just clean the lenses with regular solution then. Last time I went to my optometrist, I mentioned this technique to them, then wide-eyed and flabbergasted, they inquired who taught me to do that and said never ever use this technique again. The dish soap, even without the hand-softners, is too strong for some of the compounds used to form protective layers on the lenses and it'll cause those layers to degrade and disintegrate much more quickly than they would otherwise.
I’ve been cleaning my glass Ray- Ban sunglasses and my plastic lens clear glasses (which have an anti scratch coating)with warm water, a tiny drop of Dawn, and drying with Bounty paper towels for years. Only Bounty, as recommended by my optometrist. Other , cheaper brands will scratch the lenses.

@@polozine get a can of compressed hair or if your wife got a strong hairblowers use that to blow the water away, no more water marks :D

Tried the alcohol rub but found it ruined the protective coatings I paid to save my lenses!
I usually wind up using salicylic acid face wash because that's what's at the sink. So far so good.
This worked so good
Good idea I'll try that
Thats the old fashion technique you want to use lense cleaning wipes works just as well
You are still using wipes? That's the old fashion technique, I use a special NASA grade telescope lens gel.
Wouldn't the soap take away the lens coating overtime?
Thank you for posting this!
That’s exactly how I’ve been doing it😊 Good to have the validation
What about when the screws and frames get rusty because of the water?
Thank you doc!
I use a camera air blaster to dry microfiber tends to smear on my coated lens
Wont that rust the hinges in mattter of months
*is this applicable both on anti radiation and photochromic eye glasses???*
*can anyone please tell me* i just want to be sure and don't want to ruin my glasses😅😬🥺
I do it all the time with mine. Just use the Blue Color Dawn or Generic Dish Soap. The name brand dawn soap one tends to be best in removing all the face oils.
My question is what number black head paint does this guy use?
does it has to be dish soap? like can't be regular body washing soap?
no too harsh for the Anti glare coatings. Needs to be mild soap.
