Dev Patel dishes on his directorial debut "Monkey Man," an action-packed thriller that combines inspiration from Indian mythology and Bruce Lee martial art movies. Dev shares how he "tripled down" on his Indian heritage for the film, and dishes on the many hurdles he faced directing his first movie, including putting a nail into his hand, having to film on his phone after breaking the camera, and shooting during the pandemic. I watched Monkey Man last night and it was an insane riot of a film! Dev crushed it in performance and has proven he has the chops now to join the league of John Wick and Kill Bill in the action hero genre. I hiiiighly suggest seeing it on the biggest screen and crowd as possible!!

I'm only about a year older than Dev. It's amazing to see how he pulled of this movie after Slumdog. I can't believe how much I loved it. The backstory is more screwed up than Mikasa's so straight no holding back for a revenge plot. This guy wanted to go all in and it turned out awesome.

There is so much more Dev could create using his Indian heritage. The storytelling in the manner he did in this movie will propel the world into a different realm of moviemaking. This is the time to move away from the usual Hollywood sequels or reproductions decade after decade and create something truly impactful. Way to go my friend. Indeed an opportunity for the big studios to work on something different to promote and encourage. Eitherways, challenge the status quo, the doors will align.

Btw I’m Filipina I was born catholic and was a few different religions and have an Aussie husband but got married in Hindu ceremony in Bali with a man dressed as Hanuman part of the ceremony.

@@pario850 authenticity is always better but I guess he’s already doing something that’s so already out of the box for western entertainment and for a “skinny Indian dude” (his words not mine) sometimes feel they can only push so far when spoon feeding new audiences.
This is why representation and diversity of all kinds matters so much! Look at the sudden rise of Asian actors in non Asian films and also Asian actors in “regular” roles on tv, films and streaming. Trustingly someday soon we won’t have to water things down for audiences in order for them to consider watching it.
Btw the trailer was totally giving Slumdog and John Wick Vibes. I genuinely wish this gets the continued audience and critical support. I’m booking my tix for this week.

Dev explained in this interview this movie is low budget. Appearances in TV shows can be costly, so it is normal that the marketing is focusing on the bigger star if they have a limited budget for promotions.

I disliked Slumdog (as did many Indians) since it was a very western gaze and amplified the stereotypes about India. I was looking forward to Monkey man because I thought it will be an authentic take and will be a rich cultural portrayal of Indian culture but now seeing the reviews saying its Slumdog millionaire meets John Wick, I think I am not going to waste my money on another Hindu Bashing, poverty porn movie catering to the western audiences.

It kinda celebrates aspects of the Hindu culture, I felt. I think with Monkey Man, Dev did a good job of sparking interest in Indian mythology whilst also making a movie with a relatable hero and very good action scenes.

Just because a movie shows poverty in India doesn’t mean it’s Hindu bashing..it’s actually the reality for a huge portion of the country. In fact, trying to hide that instead of propping up stories is as fake as it gets. Also, it’s kinda sad that watching anything that is a critique of religion makes religious people so soft.

7:37 minutes " there was a time in my life when I was ashamed of Indian part of my heritage"-I know as a kid it can be hard when you are bullied and face racism but as an adult, his parents should have given him the confidence to be his authentic self unapologetically.
