Hey Chuu! Just letting you know that calling the hijra "trans women" is a little simplistic. It's its own identity recognised as such in mythology, history and in legal terms. Each hijra likely understands their relationship with gender completely differently. Many are femme-presenting but more closely align with non-binary identities. Even that is a simplification, because the hijra have been around for thousands of years longer than these specific labels. Just wanted to let you know, love your videos!

@@ActuallyAnanyaThis is true for some of them. For others, getting designated hijra is a way to third gender them when they identify as women (trans women). It’s degendering them and relegating them to roles outside of society. It’s important not to impose your own values onto other cultures, but it’s equally important to not lose sight of the transmisogyny rampant in many cultures that denies trans women their full womanhood.

@@Yharazayd Speaking as a Savarna Indian about this film - that, firstly, we in India will get to watch uncensored only as pirated downloads; and, secondly, is made by a Savarna expat with mostly other Savarna actors (Savarnas being the so-called South Asian 'upper castes') - i am in two minds about what seems to be a subversion of the "angry Hanuman" weaponized by majoritarian statecraft, the film apparently turning "him" against the state (which "he's" known to be oppressive), since Savarnapanti [Savarna networks, cultural capital & intergenerational wealth] are like white habitus...and are accompanied by oppression of Dalits, Bahujans & Adivasis [the so-called South Asian 'outcastes,' 'lower castes' & 'tribals']...making me wonder whether a Dalit, Bahujan, or Adivasi actor will ever gain even the prominence of a Savarna actor like Dev Patel. After all, as observed by anticaste Dalit\Bahujan\Adivasi thinkers, we Savarnas lay claim to brownness as soon as we go outside South Asia, since we aren't able to digest no longer being number one.

As an Indian, you could tell Dev was steeped in the culture and the socio-political war of meaning that we Indians have been struggling with. Its clear in the way he depicted caste, and the way he made room to empower the marginalized, instead of being a stereotypical saviour trope. It subverts the toxic nature of many of our Indian films from bollywood that has a larger than life patriarchal protector character, whos basically a demi-god who cannot do anything wrong.
And the balls he had to confront hindu nationalism head on is incredible and i hope it inspires more Indians to fight back and take back meaning, when fascists appropriate and twist our traditions to crush someone else's neck under their boot.
We have some other great movies that deal with Caste, Im from Kerala in the south, and a recent movie that deals with it head on as well was Jai Bhim, check it out if you can find english subs 👌🏾

The part where Baba talks about the prayer inscribed on his sandals' rims is so interesting: "Forgive me for all the lifeforms I hurt with each step I take." It simultaneously shows you that he sees the commoners as no better than ants/blades of grass from his position, & his philosophy as an antagonist that the higher up in power he gets, the more people he'll inevitably hurt, but that's necessary in order to move forward. He was intriguing even with few lines.

I was sold on Monkey Man from the first time I heard about it, and after seeing it, delivered everything I wanted and more.
Ironically, this video made me think about Monkey Man in comparison to another movie I saw recently, Silent Night. And how part of that movie that worked for me was how much of a TRAGEDY you feel the whole time the MC is on his rampage of revenge. The action is still thrilling and beautiful carnage, but it is all done with an air of melancholy.
Meanwhile, with Monkey Man, you feel a tinge of that in the first half, but with the mid-point shift in mind set, the final push is so much more triumphant and cathartic. And a big part of that was the community. The fact that there were ALWAYS people caring about Kid through the whole thing. The call girl he meets early on showed us how EVERYONE was living that story, being knocked down, trying to survive, knowing they deserve better. Her line about the dog while actually talking about herself... damn, that hit.

I’ll do it myself.”👹 I also like how you touched on the protagonist not being a one-man island, but also depended on the goodwill of others to help him move towards his goal. It’s also funny how the title of the movie is Monkey Man as if alluding to one person, but I feel like it touches on a collective of people mistreated and ostracized by society. I noticed the hijra, the low class, sex workers, everyone disregarded by corrupt society come together in solidarity to protest against the elite that keep them in subjugation! ✊🏿

Hi! Im from India and love Indian cinema and although this film hasn't released in my country yet (tldr we as a nation are rapidly descending into utter fascism), i feel like I've gauged a good enough understanding of it from what ive heard abt it so far. I cant comment on the South Korean cinema- inspired aspects of it bec i have watched only a handful of sk films in general, much less sk revenge thrillers, but Indian cinema also has a still-popular, longstanding strain of similar action films with socialistic themes abt the marginalised fighting back against the power, the importance of community, heavy inspiration taken from mythology etc. Two films that I kept thinking abt in relation to Monkey Man are Agneepath/Path of Fire (1990), its 2012 remake and Karnan (2021). The first stars one of Indian/Hindi cinema's great yesteryear action heroes Amitabh Bachchan and is about a heavily traumatised young boy from an island (Mandva) near Mumbai who loses his father (a do-gooder schoolteacher who publicly opposes the story's heroin dealing villainous gangsters and has to face a defamation plot schemed by them against him to make it seemed like he hired a sex worker (it makes sense in the movie I promise)) to a terrible lynching and has to migrate to Mumbai with his sister and mother after their townspeople turn against their entire family. The child Vijay (a popular name for similar characters played by Bachchan, meaning "victory") starts working for the Mumbai mafia and grows up to be a notorious kingpin, and a demi-godlike figure in the eyes of the local populace. It's a very angry and melodramatic story of mythic proportions, very insensitive towards its women characters and filled w toxic masculinity (the word "hijra" is thrown around as an insult to men, an antagonist is castrated by our hero using a sword as the ultimate humiliation etc.), but it has always impressed me with its relentless tone and the constant ugliness and trauma and anger felt in every frame and every other line of dialogue (written by legend Kader Khan) spoken by the characters. It was remade by the original producer's son in 2012 with a larger budget, younger cast, and a much more simplistic approach towards good and evil. In Agneepath 2012 is where I first encountered the concept of a vigilante guard-army made up of hijra women (maybe done to rectify the transmisogyny of the original film?).
Many of India's pioneering action films were revenge "masalas" (masala, in film studies terms, is the genre where a film combines multiple genres/tropes from genres like romcom, tragic-romance, action, comedy, family drama, fantasy, mystery, reincarnation dramas etc. like a spice blend) that took inspiration from tropes, characters and story structures found in things like Hindu mythology and folklore, and involved orphaned/abandoned/traumatised children that grow into traumatised adults. The best action films coming out of India right now are mostly coming out of the south (RRR was a Telugu language South Indian movie) and one recent revenge drama inspired by mythology that i mentioned before is Karnan. While Monkey Man takes inspiration from a part of the larger epic Ramayana, Karnan is inspired by a story from the other great Hindu epic Mahabharata. It also features an underdog avenging the murder of his kinswoman (Karnan's sister), a strong emphasis on how Karnan's community is just as responsible for and involved in the retributive action, and imagery inspired by folk theatre and other folk arts from India.
I think I heard somewhere (maybe from the director's own mouth) that Monkey Man also discusses themes of caste, which is the primary theme in Karnan (an inversion of the sometimes casteist myth from the Mahabharata it is based on), along with class conflict being a prominent theme in a majority of the Indian action film canon. I just wanted to make it clear that caste and class are not the same thing. Caste and untouchability are a feudal-origin system, basically a divine distribution of labour based on birth status, that existed in other countries in Asia and Europe before the advent of capitalism as well, but a system that has stuck around in South Asia (especially India) till the present day. Caste and class heavily intersect (the poorest in India are majorly made up of Dalits and other lower-caste individuals) but are still distinct enough from each other. The closest benchmark to caste as a concept to non Indians would be race, ig? It is a closed, fixed system with no avenue for any type of mobility within castes for an individual, unlike class. It's pretty awesome that an NRI (non resident Indian) like Dev Patel would choose to focus on someone like caste, which is still being swept under the rug in countries like the US (look it up, it's WILD how protection against caste discrimination is being turned into something like bigotry towards Hindus by the same fascistic organisations who are among many forces ultimately responsible for the delayed release of this film and others like it in India).
Anyways, there are a lot of aspects in this film that are exciting for me to explore as an audience of Indian cinema, if only it gets a proper digital release so that I can watch it online, uncensored! Sorry for any grammar/spelling mistakes and I hope this comment inspire people to check out more indian cinema

excellent summary of all the feelings about this movie. in highschool i (black american nonbinary) did a project on hijra communities, was a generic hs senior research report. hijra are historically associated with sex work (trans/nb bodies being fetishized thruout all historyyyyyyy) but this movie even with its thematic constant of sex work, does not feature hijra sex workers. it gives them space to be something else, not that sex workers are seen as less than, just...theyre allowed to be not that. i think that's a fascinating choice, i feel like it's deliberate but obvs i cant be sure. i think that's neat.
& broadly yes, dev patel should be so much more famous! i saw slumdog millionaire before it won an oscar bc im sure my mom just wanted to see the movie without white people bc there werent many of those at the time. remembering that & seeing this...

Actors taking up our screens is really a big part of the problem. Two people always come to mind when I talk about this: Colin Farrel and Chris Pratt. It honestly becomes really draining to see the same actor in every single movie even if they're not right for the part. It also kills the possibility of seeing someone new who could bring a different perspective to a role.

I've bought my ticket for an evening showing off the strength of this video, I can't wait. It's been so long since I've been excited about a movie. And I'm lowkey happy Netflix chickened out: Netflix is where most films go to die and they probably wouldn't have promoted it worth a damn anyway. Thanks for referencing The Equalizer, I love those movies so much (I still haven't seen the 3rd one yet, so you jogged my memory)

i was bummed that a lot of the camerawork gave me a headache because the shakiness does make total sense both for the genre & for a character who's not 100% perfect at what he does! as i was watching, i was really struck by how much i felt for Kid in comparison to other protags in the genre. John Wick was fun to watch & I understand and support his vendetta but there is a soulfulness to Monkey Man that really makes it stand out from the pack (& its not just dev's big emotional brown eyes).
    also yeah teeth scene. 👍

I saw the trailer and was hyped for it, but then i managed to watch it and all my expectations were met by the gritty crime action, then exceeded by the writing of a cathartic, community revenge story and the cinematography, which is the kind of subjective POV framing that i absolutely love. I actually connected it to Batman's arc from The Batman, where the hero learns the power of fighting for a worthy cause and the importance of solidarity and community
Edit: and of course the political writing was wonderfully direct and relevant. As well as, to take from a tumblr user, doing away with the idea that the oppressed are responsible for breaking the cycle of violence

I just appreciated having a relatively new story with good fight choreography, good pacing, good story/character building, NO stupid exposition, and great cinematography. That was one of those movies that for some reason was always in one of the cable tv rotations so I grew up watching it way more than anyone that age probably should have. AHHH I adored this movie!! When I saw the trailer I knew I had to see it, which is a first for me because I'm usually not an action movie girlie. I watched it on Saturday and a second time on Sunday. My eyes have been hereby opened to Dev Patel
The biggest thing I love about this movie, however obvious, is how it explicitly tackles a lot of very real political and social issues, and in a really cathartic way, in my opinion. And with so many creative kills
This was also the first time I recognized songs in a movie that I actually knew from the stuff I actually listen to. There was Red Sex by Vessel (from the fight ring scenes) and Dana Dan by Bloodywood (from the fight scene alongside the hijras). I need to shake the hand of whoever put together that soundtrack because it was such an experience to actually KNOW the song that's playing in a movie that I love.

my letterboxd review started with "fuck up bitches, protect and support trans lives, and get revenge." What a bloody good time. Dev really delivered - seeing this in a semi empty theater on Thursday was such a fun experience.
It is insane that you can just do one project and and blow up and now you won't get off our screens - but it takes multiple roles for black and brown actors to even get any of that.
We really do get a pat on the back for our efforts and told to keep at it until it hits for us.
    That's shitty.

Excellent video! I love revenge stories. I think stories of vengeance and revenge are compelling for so many reasons. They're dark reflections of our desires for justice, retribution, and equity in a world that is increasingly lacking them. They can also show how a victim can grow to become their own savior after an encounter with a force of injustice. The Count of Monte Cristo was the first story I became obsessed with, and I think it's because it gave me this window into how twisted feelings of anger and hatred can corrupt a life and ultimately only serve as a distraction from the human feelings we avoid: grief, sadness, and remorse. Once the revenge is over, what's left except the feelings that were there before.

Such a lovely reading of this film Yhara!! You highlighted things I noticed but hadn’t truly thought about after the first watch.
This movie was a beautifully woven tapestry. He touches on so many important aspects of Indian socio-politics. I feel like my world has opened up so much more. He’s inspired to me to read and to learn about these issues.
Even how he handled patriarchy. He doesn’t swoop in to rescue the helpless damsels because there are no such women in this movie they all save each other.
This movie is just…ugh…you know when you find yourself eating at a schmancy restaurant for the first time and the food just TASTES HEAVENLY???!! This movie is IT!!!
It breaks my heart that this film is not getting as many eyes on it mostly because of Netflix’s cowardice but this is a film for the ages!! It’s beautifully shot, the narrative is amazing. I’m so happy this film exists. And I’m thankful for the spirit of community shown by Jordan Peele.
Ugh!! The trailers didn’t do it justice. Nothing can truly capture how beautiful of an odyssey this film is. It’s something everyone has to experience for themselves. CHEF’S KISS!! 50 000 Michelin stars 🤩 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
EDIT: I forgot to mention the tuk tuk chase scene absolutely ICONIC!!!
