Videos of a 96-year-old hawker in central China’s Henan province sharing her life motto have gone viral on Chinese social media. Zhang Yuzhen has been working as a night-shift hawker who sells vegetable pies for 30 years. She said she would rather find something meaningful to do, than retire like other elderly people.

That’s what I was thinking. Going viral has people going out to support her too, which is nice, but she’s just one person. She doesn’t seem like a person who needs hundreds of people supporting her as she found her own support, found her own purpose.

Many others would be happy that they are getting so much business but she can't keep up with the demand on her own and with all the fame she gained, this was only going to carry on. So she decided to stop which is a shame because she didn't want to stop

People who think elderly people should just relax and enjoy life dont know that when seniors dont have a purpose or have anything to wake up to, they just give up on life and just die. Look at how happy she is making people food and it gives her a reason to get up in the morning.
True, my grandfather passed away just 7 months after we shut down his quail farm and moved to another city, a decision my family regrets the most.

She had to quit because she had to many customers for one lady to handle. She lost her livelihood because of this video. She now has to find a new income source.

The world doesn't need a leader.
The only lead I follow is the wisdom I pickup left and right from what I observe and hear from others so I can form my own conclusions and based on that is a path that I lay out from myself as a lead. Not just blindly pick a "world leader" and follow just because some words of wisdom have been spoken.

This is her retirement. She happily chooses to continue working hard and keep her mind occupied. But social media disrupts her retirement by attracting public to come and spend money as a way of showing appreciation, which only exhaust her instead of making her happy. Just goes to show money doesn't equal happiness. She is like a piece of artwork. You appreciate it by looking, not demage it by touching. I think her life philosophy is unbelievably true. I've seen so many of my older relatives and friends older relatives who stay at home and do nothing eventually become somewhat depressed.
Y, but not everyone can find a working activity without being very tired. The problem is that even if some old ppl need an activity, they can't find something easy enough. So its difficult.

It's because most people eat bad food and take drugs/vaccines when sick... I'm betting grandma grew up on homeopathic treatments when sick, and probably didn't touch vaccines until she was well into her adult years.

If all Chinese had her values, the country would be unstoppable. Quality needs to be valued over quick money. Quick money hurts you in the long run. Quality is less financially rewarding immediately, but people will trust you and give you repeat business.

I do agree with that. Imagine doing something you love doing for 30 years, only for it to be taken away in a short amount of time all because of a viral news. I understand if people just want to try her pies and help her earn some income. But it went so out of control for Grandma to handle that she literally had to stop running her business.
@@msi7188 people are so self-important, who needs their support here? The granny started this business 30 years ago, that was almost 10 years after retirement. She's retired for 40 years, and has retirement salary, which only got increased every year, for over 40 years! Most streamer just want to get views by showing off their own "generosity", which doesn't cost much, one is only sold for ¥6.
@@haos4574 Absolutely. And in the name of getting more views, the streamer did not consider the possible (negative) effect it would have on the grandma. I'm pretty sure she was already content with what she was doing without the publicity. I mean, she did it for 30 years without a problem. But like you said, these people/streamers have become so "self-important" and want to show off their "generosity" that they didn't think about the outcome that the grandma would have to deal with: the publicity she didn't even ask for.

Not everyone can be healthy or live longer and healthy in that age so barriers exist some people body is stronger than others that’s it what matter what, she doesn’t even sleep night for 30 years and is fine, i didn’t sleep the night for few weeks even i enjoy nights because the are quiet but day sleeping wasn’t enough for me and got sick and weak because my body didn’t allow it
People don't realize when the human body stops work and goes into "retirement" stage, that's where you see alot more older people dying earlier as compared to older folks who never stopped being active.
Retiring is one thing for old folks; finding 2nd life is absolutely key. You need the motivation to keep going. There's less worrying and it does mitigate diseases like Alzheimer's.
So true. My grandpa was a tailor, he was fine when he was still sewing dress or walked around the city to see his friends. Then one day, he was hit by a bike during one of his walk around. My uncles who worried about my grandpa, forced him to quit sewing dress and lived with them in other city in their big house, separated from his friends, watched and accompanied every where by a hired nurse. Not long after that, my grandpa developed alheizmer symptoms, and died few years later.

thanks, he is in a better place now with my grandma. Amazingly, in his last days, he forgot about every one including his sons and daughters, except my grandma who passed away before him. He kept looking for her. I can't imagine how he felt, living with his family but to him, they were strangers. I know it was horribly sad for my uncles.

what i remember the most is how she said everyone worked hard for the six yuan to buy her pie, so she puts in lots of filling. six yuan (at least to me) is a very very small amount, yet she acknowledges peoples hardwork behind even such a small amount. if i got to eat her pie, at this price, i would definitely be very fulfilled.

I am Moroccan living in canada and working at nightshifts I was worried working at night is bad for health but this lady is a proof that nightshifts are not that bad lol. I met a lot of Chinese people here, they are all nice. I wish I could buy foods from this nice lady. and yes going from childhood to elderly age is very fast.

It's what drives the Society forward; while an individualistic one will remain in the same spot and inevitably drown itself in internal conflicts and bitterness.

She answered that without pause. An individualistic old person would want to make as much as they can with the little time they have left.

She reminds me of my grandma, her curt and wise words while never stopping to talk about anything less than meaningful things. She had no patience for pretty words or empty platitudes, she told you what she thought whether the person wanted to hear it or not, in a way it was her way to make you see the true value of life even if it sometimes hurt.

The photographer is discriminating the 96-year-old hawker by age in the first clip. The hawker is right, people of all ages should have the right to do whatever they want (as long as its legal or possible, at least).
Was he discriminatory? I'm not sure honestly, but did anyone else think he was being discriminatory? I mainly thought he was just asking questions - it is just his tone was neutral (not friendly but also not mean in my opinion).
