Yes, some of those things are intrusive and a bit scary. I don't know if the whole deal with sexism is just teaching emotional control gone awry. Invasion of the body snatchers used a high-pitched scream to indicate a non-converted human which is interesting: and honestly, which is scarier - enthusiastic men in terms of far right football firms, incels & stalkers have committed far more actual murders and terrorist incidents as far as I am aware!
The way they describe anything in TED talks is always rubbing the subject in the right way. People not only learn from their mistakes, they must also receive a feed-back of this mistake. One does not learn from a mistake he never knew he committed. I'm afraid this is the issue here, we are literally in the middle of a giant Survivorship bias, where people who survived to tell the tales, come and talk about how you should quit your precious job to travel, how your instinct is always right, how anything you thought was negative in yourself is in actually a strength, etc. I never saw TED Talks about how people attempted things but got nothing positive in the end, yet it's much more common in real life.
Thanks really I’m no more going to be ashamed of the word “fangirl”as a noun to describe me,and If I hear my idols name I’m gonna hold my head up and talk about them freely without thinking about judgments♥︎♥︎
What fangirls need to learn, is how to be a fan, and how to be respectful at the same time. To understand that the people they look up to are just human beings. That social rejection will be the result of their lack of balance between logic and emotion. Never too late to teach control
thanks for mansplaining normal social behaviors. men that follow football teams should do the same instead of causing damage to property after their team wins.
I agree. I don’t think the problem is that they admire that person, it’s that they make life hard for that person and sometimes for people around them. Sometimes love is sacrificing what you want for the sake of their privacy, or just for people in general. I mean, breaking into an airport! Way to surprise me with what direction she took this though! Definitely made me think.
Since being a fangirl I have made things that I never imagine I could be able to do before. Travel alone to another country for the first time, get out of a concert and immediately put in line for going to the same concert in the order day, stay there for 19 hours until the concert starts, being able to sleep just like 1 hour (after screaming and jumping the day before), eating just like 1 hamburger during the 2 days because I was so nervous I wasn't able to eat, going to the bathroom just one time during the whole day I was in the file, don't drinking enough water because I was scared of needing to pee after that, and yet be stand during 3 hours screaming and jumping until my throat hurts. I'm really surprised that I didn't faint... this is why I really think that being a fangirl gives you super powers, I just lost my voice for one week. I was able to travel to brazil and see BTS live for the first time, and it worth it
Or even hurting yourself. There are fangirls that cut themselves and stuff for their idols. I'm a huge fangirl too but the craziest thing I've done as a fangirl is having 800+ pics of Sally Hardesty

alihaggis78 you are the first person I’ve found in the comments who doesn’t think like a sociopath. Everyone else thinks it’s perfectly fine to tell someone who doesn’t know you that you fantasize about having their baby. Because that’s what the majority of sports fans are doing.
i think it was meant to show one of the extremes of fan girls... most aren't like that lol.. also with fan fiction ( i don't read it but i have friends that do and they have said this) if you ask the writer a lot of the time when they write using the names of these celebrities it's like they make a new personality for them and don't think of it as anything that could be real? just like a character in a book.. some would say that is wrong to do too, but i think it's better than believing you could get pregnant with their child..? lol
You guys never played aggressive shooter video games? Research showed that people who play those are NOT more likely to commit murder. Here is the thing: enjoying a fantasy to the fullest, even a creepy one, together with other fangirls, does NOT mean they don't know that reality is different. It's a social thing, and gives endorphines in lonely times. Fanfic is NOT representative of what they think is going to happen. Duh...
I feel like this is gonna attack Fans of anyone and generalize us as crazy and obsessive. Lets see if I’m proven wrong... (Update: I was wrong and I am so glad I was wrong, ARMYs💜)
that was a wonderful TED talk! and I absolutely agree with her, but I also see many things in fandoms that actually are very problematic (like the "shipping" or fetishizing of people)
Aninja the shipping can be okay if ppl don’t go overboard but that’s impossible and happens in literally every aspect of everything. The fetishizing too. It’s all about how ppl look at things. That’s why there are so many kinks going “mainstream”
I would much rather live a life full of loving something to the fullest of my ability and being excited about it as much as I want rather than being worried what other people think. 💜 amazing Ted talk!
At last someone enlighten the enthusiastic power of a Fangirl, not just only in that room but to all who would gonna watch this video across the world.
This is one of the BEST Ted Talks ever! The way she's combined humor, facts, stories, audience interaction, and a new unprecedented point of view on a glob issue is 💓 and her energy!!!!!! 💓💓💓
I am reminded of a passage in Douglas Adams' novel "Dirk Genty's Holistic Detective Agency" in which a venerable old professor points to a particular cobblestone and remarks, "Wordsworth once got sick on that brick. Great man."
Boys are told not to cry at 4?? Uh where ? Maybe 50 years ago. All the parents I see now embrace emotions and encourage feelings almost to the point it’s annoying.
I think this talk was two years ago, also she's referring to the generation she grew up in, where there were fathers in the home. Now mothers tell their sons to embrace their emotions, cry and lean on their women when they need them.
The part where everyone screamed brought me back to the first time I saw One Direction and the screen was lifted and they walked out. My stomach dropped, my heart raced, and tears came to my eyes. And as a 20 year old, I was made fun of for that. As a 25 year old now, I still get made fun of my love for One Direction but nobody says anything to my boyfriend and his hockey obsession. I loved this TED talk.
Ive never felt more alive and full of joy than in the middle of a crowd of 86k fellow Army at Metlife, screaming, chanting and dancing with abandon, filled with pure excitement. I'll chase that feeling the rest of my life ..but hopefully Ill be able to see a few more BTS concerts before that ;)
DAMN! as a fangirl, i'm crying. this is what people need to know. we are just as sane as the other. we are just as normal as the other. i agree, our scream is not a crazy sound, it is a hopeful sound. i hope no one would ever underestimate and judge fangirls again. let's love with no fear and apology towards the one we love. and let's just respect someone's love and interest towards something and someone because we never know how would 'that person/thing' means to someone. have a good day!♥
Being a girl, I think that fangirl affection is awesome, but being obsessed with Harry Styles 24/7 is a bit unhealthy in my opinion. Though I had my own share of squealings in my time, hence I do not discourage these young girls from letting out their affections.
Nancy K you can’t hate the girl obsessed with Harry 24/7 because that is how the world is pushing her to behave. The 14 yr girl is told to love harry styles and the 14 yr boy is told to love video games. So in the end, please direct your unhealthy opinion to capitalism
One of my favourite TED talk I ever saw. Very clear message and very fun to watch at the same time. I watched because I am a fangirl as well (not boy bands)
This video is a blessing Edit: Also, I think it's safe to say that you can call a fan girl crazy when she puts needles in a cookie and feeds it to an artist over different opinions on character designe.
I don’t think it’s a gender issue. Anyone who tells me they’d slit someone’s throat to be with some famous person they’ve never met is a crazy fangirl. Tell me I’m wrong
Joe Is Awesome and not Mediocre finally someone who sees what wrong with validating this type of behavior just because they are women. Men who do the same with female celebrities are considered a threat to society. There is no double standard accept for the fact that it’s actually more acceptable for women to be this aggressive about someone. That’s why I reported this video for promoting terrorism 😂
Yall should go to concerts if you can it is super fun and thrilling esp with all the screams. It's like you share the same happiness and love with everyone else there
Yeahhh, That's the reason why I will never be ashamed to be called a fangirl. All my love for the lads of One Direction! 🌹 Harry, Liam, Niall, Louis & Zayn. Thank you, Yve Blake, and Ted Ed for this video. I really really love it, it expresses my hidden thoughts so very well. So I’ll start doing what you preach. *I’m ARMY (a BTS fan) and I’m HELLA PROUD!* 💜
I’m a fan girl of The Vampire Diaries Universe. It’s adults who watched the show in high school/college and it’s nostalgia for us. We are crazy…but god we love this show with passion. People judge us as crazy adults and we are. But that’s okay because TVD got me through COVID.
Because ANY criticism of female behaviour is obviously caused by sexism, apparently. If you say a female is behaving badly, there will be a TED talk shaming you for criticizing the pure angels that absolutely all women are
@Harry M : Why are you so lost? Just how hard was your heart broken to fill you with such anger? Women are not your enemy. More like you are your own enemy here guy. If you want to be loved, then you yourself have to give love, it's as simple as that. If you can't find it in your heart to love others, then don't blame them for not loving you back dude, it's just simple math.
@@aylbdrmadison1051 hahaha I have a beautiful wife and we love each other, but nice try. I'm actually worried about my children. Marriage rates are going down fast, and that has to do with how courts always side with women (men get resentful and women do whatever they want cause they know they can get away with it). If you stop trying to ad hominem every time you hear criticism, you might actually see the problem.

I'm ARMY & 44 (BTS fan). I'm in a BTSARMYmom group full of mom fans that rang in age from 20s to 60s. My two kids 3 & 11 are also huge fans. I took my daughter to the LA concert this year and it was the most bonding, loving moment we've had in ages and did a lot to heal some hurts. When we were in line to exit the stadium this elderly couple in their 80s came up and I let them in. She shuffled along holding onto her husband on one side and her ARMY bomb (light stick) in the other. We are family and we are supportive & inclusive beyond anything I've ever felt - including my religious faith. That night was the best night of united fangirling (and boying) and love I've ever felt.
To be willing to kill for a love interest, either it be a game or an idol is psychotic however you spin it. One could even argue that placing a human so far up above all else as to the status of a demigod is psychotic in of itself.
Yes this is why I reported this video for promoting terrorism 😂 this woman’s view of reality is skewed. Her comparison was invalid because guys are held to the same and even stricter rules when it comes to female celebrities and women in general so no there isn’t a double standard if she compared it right instead of framing it as if women are just a victim of their own feelings. It’s any socially unacceptable behavior that stems from lack of self control that is the problem.
Totally agree you sould let your feelings out whoever you are, but this feeling of protection people have with famous people sometimes really looks maniac. And it is not just with famous people, football is a good example as well. It is still scary
Sure, being passionate about your interests and loving things is great, no matter if you're male or female, but... believing you're going to marry Harry Styles because you're willing to slit people's throat over it is crazy and delusional. It's not OK at any age. Also imagine what it's like to be a famous person and not being able to have a normal life and go to public places because a mob of crazy fans, crying, yelling and shrieking will come running after you and trample over everything and everyone in their way... People need to chill. Seriously.

Wow .. I have just captured your reply to come and see it when I need .. your words are precious & contain alot of wise 💛
SAME! I won't stop loving Sally Hardesty 😁❤️
Well threatening to slit someone's throat just to be with someone is pretty messed up
I don't think the person really meant it. Maybe time will come they'll realize it's not right
And maybe a diehard football fan would do the same
Eshita Singh More like they CAN’T do it.
That just says you're not a fangirl. Nobody means that
that's gen z's joke and it's pretty normal. go to twitter
Thanks really I’m no more going to be ashamed of the word “fangirl”as a noun to describe me,and If I hear my idols name I’m gonna hold my head up and talk about them freely without thinking about judgments♥︎♥︎
Yes!!!
Yesx2!
SAME! I'm not ashamed of loving Sally Hardesty ❤️😁
What fangirls need to learn, is how to be a fan, and how to be respectful at the same time. To understand that the people they look up to are just human beings. That social rejection will be the result of their lack of balance between logic and emotion. Never too late to teach control
^^^^^^^^
Cullen yes
thanks for mansplaining normal social behaviors. men that follow football teams should do the same instead of causing damage to property after their team wins.
@@cysounds agreed. Not mansplaining now. Checkmate
This would have been the best reference for my sociology assignment 3 years ago 😭😭 love Yve's work!
This is dedicated to ARMY, I know it.
I concur - from a 38 year old ARMY. ☺️☺️💜
27 year old ARMY. I'm also claiming this video for us lol.
And also for my daughter. She's only 2 now, but I want her to be fully supported in her passion and enthusiasm throughout life.
23 🤷🏽♀️
24 years old army ✌
I was able to travel to brazil and see BTS live for the first time, and it worth it
I love her energy
This is so necessary
Thanks a lot, I really enjoued this funny and yet so eyes opening talk
I love how this was posted on the ninth anniversary of One Direction. Someone planned that really well. 😂
As long as you don't go hurting people or killing people, it's fine to be a fangirl.
Or even hurting yourself. There are fangirls that cut themselves and stuff for their idols. I'm a huge fangirl too but the craziest thing I've done as a fangirl is having 800+ pics of Sally Hardesty
@@user-pw9ie9ou7t girl i have 11,000+ pics of enhypen 😂
n don't get me wrong people, its the pictures they released officially that i collect, i never take their pict without consent or doing weird things abt it so don't call me crazy istg
It's ok to love things and people but building a shrine to someone's vomit actually IS mental.
alihaggis78 you are the first person I’ve found in the comments who doesn’t think like a sociopath. Everyone else thinks it’s perfectly fine to tell someone who doesn’t know you that you fantasize about having their baby. Because that’s what the majority of sports fans are doing.
It's just a funny example of a extreme. Most fangirls are just happy with content of their beloved thing.
i think it was meant to show one of the extremes of fan girls... most aren't like that lol.. also with fan fiction ( i don't read it but i have friends that do and they have said this) if you ask the writer a lot of the time when they write using the names of these celebrities it's like they make a new personality for them and don't think of it as anything that could be real? just like a character in a book.. some would say that is wrong to do too, but i think it's better than believing you could get pregnant with their child..?
Duh...
@@SkittyBlackfire agree. Me myself love violent and gore themed stories and but i actually weak and scared to death to see one in real life.
1D the biggest boy band and this talk is on point!
haha!! ikr
I feel like this is gonna attack Fans of anyone and generalize us as crazy and obsessive. Lets see if I’m proven wrong...
(Update: I was wrong and I am so glad I was wrong, ARMYs💜)
How can you expect an attack from a grown woman in a dress COVERED in HUGE sequins!? 💜💜💜😊😊😊
💜
I really love THIS ONE. I'm a fangirl and I never felt ashamed and listening to her made me even prouder
Me too!
I heard this TED x Talk on a Spotify Podcast and before it had even started I just knew it was about Harry Styles
Love this for young girls and passionate women all over the world 💜
This woman has a beautiful soul and such a positive energy!
that was a wonderful TED talk! and I absolutely agree with her, but I also see many things in fandoms that actually are very problematic (like the "shipping" or fetishizing of people)
True
Aninja the shipping can be okay if ppl don’t go overboard but that’s impossible and happens in literally every aspect of everything. The fetishizing too. It’s all about how ppl look at things. That’s why there are so many kinks going “mainstream”
I would much rather live a life full of loving something to the fullest of my ability and being excited about it as much as I want rather than being worried what other people think. 💜 amazing Ted talk!
It is not lost on me that she’s wearing an outfit extremely reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s lover era for a video that was originally posted feb 2020 ❤️
Great man."
You know what's sad? That fangirls do more things for theirs idols, than for themselves.
you should've shown the san siro fan project by 1D fans to further cement your point
As an older ARMY, HALLELUJAH. Our young women should never be afraid to express themselves fully.
I loved this TED talk.
fandom is scary no matter what gender arrangement
Ive never felt more alive and full of joy than in the middle of a crowd of 86k fellow Army at Metlife, screaming, chanting and dancing with abandon, filled with pure excitement.
I'll chase that feeling the rest of my life ..but hopefully Ill be able to see a few more BTS concerts before that ;)
DAMN! as a fangirl, i'm crying. this is what people need to know. we are just as sane as the other. we are just as normal as the other. i agree, our scream is not a crazy sound, it is a hopeful sound. i hope no one would ever underestimate and judge fangirls again. let's love with no fear and apology towards the one we love. and let's just respect someone's love and interest towards something and someone because we never know how would 'that person/thing' means to someone. have a good day!♥
Not a fangirl but I'm a big fan of this speaker. She was awesome!
Ok but why am I crying-
Oh my I got as overwhelmed as she did by the end! I almost let out a fangirl scream from behind my screen too!
I just got here after watching The Rise of Bangtan - chapter 21: Magic Shop.
Thank you! Thank you, Yve Blake!
Man, She knows how to tell a story!!!
One of the most entertaining and enlightening ted talks
This video is a blessing
Edit: Also, I think it's safe to say that you can call a fan girl crazy when she puts needles in a cookie and feeds it to an artist over different opinions on character designe.
It's like you share the same happiness and love with everyone else there
I've never seen a young boy write fanfics about him marrying his favorite football player...
That's what you think..
@@MaiaPalazzo uh, no, i can say for a fact i've never seen that. I think I know my own memories better than you, mate. lol

Yeahhh, That's the reason why I will never be ashamed to be called a fangirl. All my love for the lads of One Direction! 🌹 Harry, Liam, Niall, Louis & Zayn. ( I know, I know to some there were only 4 left, but in my heart 5. period) Ofcourse, support and love them as a solo artists. ❤And massive thank you for speaker and TED for this! 😍
I'm totally fangirling over her Taylor Swift Outfit!!!
This was going a different direction as I thought. loved it!
KIM NAMJOON 사랑해!!!!!!!!
As a guy I was thinking “Why not fan boys?” We are guilty of being just as crazy. You should see how crazy some people get with Pokémon Go.
M_911 yes, I was just using Pokémon Go for an example.
@@Mr-Thou You sound hurt.
@@aylbdrmadison1051 hahaha I have a beautiful wife and we love each other, but nice try.
I'm actually worried about my children. Marriage rates are going down fast, and that has to do with how courts always side with women (men get resentful and women do whatever they want cause they know they can get away with it).
If you stop trying to ad hominem every time you hear criticism, you might actually see the problem.
where my directioners at???? didnt she summon us?
btw....hope you all are doing great!drinking water and eating well..taking care of yourselves!love yoyuuuuuuu
I clicked as fast as i can cause i thought she'll talk about us (ARMYS💜) 😅😬

I recently wrote 'fangirling' as my hobby in my resume...and I researched alot about how I will explain if the HR asks me how to react to the questions related to 'Fangirling'. Now I am relieved thanks to this video🙏 If you have any more suggestions please please please help me🥺 It would mean alot!🙏💗
Wow this really made me feel better about myself
Yehet!
I love this woman and I loved the scream...💜 I wish to scream my lungs out one day...
That night was the best night of united fangirling (and boying) and love I've ever felt.
her presentation was awesome..... she is incredibly talented
Yes its psychotic but you are assuming that every fan girls says or does that. There are outliers everywhere, be it fans of sports or movie actors.
@@ipromisethatserendipityisa9656 No I'm not.

And it is not just with famous people, football is a good example as well.
It is still scary

When you’re a fan girl, but it’s all over fictional characters, and only ever fictional characters-
Sure, being passionate about your interests and loving things is great, no matter if you're male or female, but... believing you're going to marry Harry Styles because you're willing to slit people's throat over it is crazy and delusional. It's not OK at any age. Also imagine what it's like to be a famous person and not being able to have a normal life and go to public places because a mob of crazy fans, crying, yelling and shrieking will come running after you and trample over everything and everyone in their way... People need to chill. Seriously.
