- A child’s proficiency at learning to read by age 8 is a key indicator of their future success. Yet across the richest and poorest countries of the world, millions of children lack the support they need to learn to read. Technology can help children at all stages along the reading journey - a journey that starts long before they read their first sentence. Dr. Patricia Scanlon has been recognised by Forbes in 2018 as one of the World’s Top 50 Women in Tech. Dr. Scanlon holds a PhD and 20 years experience in Speech Recognition and Artificial Intelligence - including at IBM Research and Bell Labs. She is currently Founder and CEO at SoapBox Labs - pioneering state-of-the-art accurate, age-appropriate and safe speech recognition for children. SoapBox Labs technology has application in gaming, VR/AR, toys, robotics as well as for accessibility and education - literacy and language learning for children. Anything that helps children with education is good for me
Let's start rebuilding it as a whole to end the mess
Most anything that helps children is good for the entire human race. They quite literally are going to be the future when the rest of us are gone. But even in the meantime, who wants to grow old and see the people who are running things become progressively less educated, and therefore less able?
We need to start by taking funding out of the hands of administrations that use funds as a reward for those who are doing the best. *We need to focus on the problems, not the places where things are already working.* This is like a teacher who gives their attention to the best students in their class and ignores those who are having the most trouble.
Please pardon my analogy. Obviously most teachers would never dream of doing such a thing, it is the administrations and government that promote this problem. Beyond that this analogy does work perfectly well though.
Learning to read should not be incumbent upon a teacher to ensure. That’s the parents responsibility. Setting a reading routine with your children is probably the best way to ensure success. And not relying on an app to it. Bottom line she’s getting at is. Read to your kids and make their education a priority.

It's not _still_ happening here in America, it has become progressively far worse over the last few decades, when it obviously should be getting better. We spend more money on public schools now, yet in the 70's when I was learning to read, we did have the basics down by the third grade. Many high school graduates have barely that level of linguistic literacy, and most college graduates today in America have what would have barely been considered a sixth grade level just 30 years ago.
I'm so happy when I see people address this problem, because it's causing mass confusion especially in younger people. Many are unable to discern the most simple facts from obvious fiction because of it. This affects literally everything from not only their own employment options, but also to understanding social constructs and political agenda.
Propaganda now has a tighter hold on society than ever before, and it's not *just* because of the internet. It has far more to do with a serious lack of linguistic literacy. The simple fact is, that communication is paramount to any group of individuals for getting literally anything done as a group. Without clear and concise communication, nothing else of any complexity can be learned. It is the actual foundation of education. I think it's one of the worlds biggest, if not the biggest, problem today.
America is transitioning into an Idiocracy.

Appreciate Video! Forgive me for butting in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you researched - Millawdon Future Ticket Trick (search on google)? It is a good one off product for teaching children to read minus the headache. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my friend finally got astronomical results with it.
So adults who haven’t learned to read should be able to? Effortlessly?
Does this work with different languages like Chinese, Japanese, French, Hindu, Somali...
Nothing is ever achieved with no effort (ie; effortlessly). But yes, anyone of any age can learn more than they already know. Or even unlearn the false things they thought they knew. The wisest strive to do both throughout their lives. ^-^

What I like about this woman is she's not a total ideologue, one reason it's been hard for me to watch Ted talks is because they give platforms to extremists (usually to left wing extremists)
But this woman only seems moderately liberal, which is fine by me, I lov moderates
She believes that education, especially literacy is very beneficial for industrial/market progress and careers, and I couldn't agree more
She didn't say that education is humanity's salvation, nor implied it, just remained very objective
My only request to her, if she could ever read this comment, is two important parts
Because if she's trying to get all kids, the world over, to have opportunities to use and succeed with helpful technologies to progress literacy
1. Keep ideological biases from editorializing the lesson plans
This can be done by maintaining curriculums that aren't interjecting unverifiable "facts" or beliefs, especially that of subversive far right/far left-wing politics (for example political correctness or religious/anti-religious views)
Likewise in that camp of examples, respecting the mid and far eastern/other aboriginal cultures from being westernized or globalized (what westerners think the world ought to think is anti diversity, as different beliefs create more new pursuits of discovery)
If the development of this technology remains as objective as she speaks, then I'll bet point 1. won't be an issue
2. Make sure that this is a message at the end of lesson plans encouraging children to engage their parents and teachers about what they've learned and what they believe they're learning, because automotive technologies will often be used more and more to raise and teach children and that is a concern
Human connection and applications of their learning compound the effectiveness of learning and promotes healthy neural plasticity
