Welcome to theeee filler episode! Although I do feel like several important things happen in it that help connect the dots between the base game and the DLC. And then just some fun things as well. ;)

I had a lot of fun making this episode and trying out new things! Most of them are fully “behind the scenes” stuff that I’m not sure would be noticeable individually but together make a difference. Also writing what I tried out here would make for a very, very long UA-cam comment. BUT when I realized that the ships log episode was going to be necessary (honestly I just recorded in case something interesting happened), I decided to have fun with it.
I actually attempted the intro on 2 separate days, with a lot of takes for each. The first day I wasn’t happy at all with the video or audio quality (which I decided on after editing it.. ha) so then I had to figure out what I was doing wrong and how to make it better. Much happier with attempt 2!
I also had fun with doing some doodles to show my thought process during Self. Initially I wasn’t going to do anything but watching it back even I was confused at what I was saying, and decided to add them in to quite literally illustrate my thoughts. I’d have done more but realized I was going down a giant rabbit hole and needed to pull myself out of it. Did you enjoy them? Let me know!
PS. Sorry I didn’t technically finish the ship’s logs, I could tell I was getting frustrated with that final missing log and decided that it was better saved for another day rather than get mad. I’ll accept vague hints if anybody knows which log I’m missing! I need to do another “ships log” episode for the DLC still anyways.

In terms of the Vessel entry, you seem to have discovered every major piece of info you need to while you're there - the last one is very subtle and is kind of unintuive: it involves something broken floating around the warp core recepticle...
EDIT: re-checked the logs you do have and changed my hint to the correct piece of information, whoops!

I also just want to elaborrate on the whole self situation as well - Gabbro's explanation of how the loop works is spot on - every loop does and doesn't happen since memories from previous cycles are being beamed into your head by the statues, and as such there's only ever the one "real" set of events - up until you either take the advanced warp core out of the Ash Twin Project or you jump into it's black hole while it's sending memories back in time.
If you *do* jump in, you come out the other side 22 minutes in the past, alongside the memories that are to be beamed into the other you's head as they're camping out as always.
Seeing as there's two of you now, if noone jumps back into the black hole when Ash Twin does it's thing, then noone is there in the past to meet and viola - time paradox and the universe shatters to the tune of kazoos!
There's a way you can see the effect at a smaller scale with your Scout at the High Energy Lab, give it a thorough onceover and I promise you'll find something neat there too!

@@jeremy_kerman I was quite annoyed when I realised that was the "important" ship log entry I was missing when I already had gotten the information from it - after I had flown around and inside the vessel for two extra loops. You shouldn't need to pick it up.

I’m mildly (ok moderately) obsessed with Outer Wilds and you are one of my best flavors of reward, relaxation, and remedy, especially after work - my coworkers are great, but management? Well …
I tried to go with $22 even, but the app won’t let me, so I’ll just pretend that a full loop without dying is 24.99 minutes.
Still, this encounter feels special. I hope you won't mind if I think of you as a friend. ::)

All of your thoughts after jumping into the black hole are both quite fun and well thought out. I haven't seen anyone else realise what would happen before they open their map and see two markers for "self". Which is lucky, too, since you seemingly haven't found the map yet. That is fair, of course, it isn't like there is a constant reminder whenever you are flying your ship :P. That moment reading Solanum's scroll from about 24:00 onward has me thinking. For her essay to still be sitting in that classroom half a generation from when she first wrote it (assuming Nomai follow human patterns loosely in that regard) she must've either been a really keen student, or that essay made a strong enough impression on that teacher they were still using it as an example for new students all those years later. At least that's all I can think of as to why that random student's essay is still sitting in that classroom. It's honestly all those little endearing things and ideas that this game just lets you stumble across and stew on that makes what happens to the Nomai all that more crushing.
And hey while I'm here I might as well say, this + EoTE has been a stellar opening for your channel, both in the choice of game and it's presentation. Thank you so much for connecting so strongly with this, allowing us to come along with you on that journey and for making it such a fun one on top of that, I'm super excited to see where this goes next :D
P.S. I would also like to put a vote in for Disco Elysium for a playthrough (would've suggested SOMA but I think you said you already played it??) since I saw someone comment that somewhere around here. The only caveat I would have for it is that it's the type of game that asks you to put your heart on your sleeve fairly often and suffers as a result if you don't bite into that aspect. I've seen playthroughs that struggle because the players (understandably) become self-conscious with the audience watching when the game is asking for a response that'll have to come from what would be for most people deeply held beliefs (political, cultural etc.). If you're ok with that, it's probably one of the most profound pieces of art I've had the pleasure of experiencing so it's certainly a good time.

    • @solanum5709
      @solanum5709 3 місяці тому +2

Yeah Disco Elysium is a must-play ! Although totally not the same vibe as OW, it is quite dystopian and extremely well written (don't be afraid of walls of text). Can only recommend, one of the most unique game I played after OW.
On another dystopian note : Not For Broadcast. A game with a lot of scenes played by real (and very good) actors, a very interesting story development and lots of absurd or dark british humor. Like DE, also quite political if you're okay with that.
Other games that also have their entire world as a puzzle/mystery like OW and are seen as extremely good to a lot of people's eyes : Return of the Obra Dinn, Chants of Sennar and (my favorite) Heaven's Vault!

For a vague hint, I'd say it's important to really touch and look at a thing to know what's going on with it. Just looking at it isn't enough sometimes. You know?
Edit: Also, a less vague comment, you might not get the achievement even when all the yellow markers are gone. Unfortunately there are unmarked things to find. My hint there is to just make sure you talk to everyone at various points in the loop. Also, it might have been editing, but there might be one more thing to find in the statue workshop...

  • @ReverendTed

Another great job with the editing.
One thing that I think you realized, but didn't _say_ was that any of "you" in the Ash Twin Core only survive the supernova for a few extra moments after the black hole closes, because it's only designed to be supernova-proof long enough to harness the energy and send the memories back.
One plot hole (or at least point that the game never addresses) is what happens to Self's memories.
Provided you jump through the ATP black hole again, at the start of the _next_ loop, you only receive the memories from the you that woke up at the campfire.
Is "Self" no longer paired with the memory statue when coming out of the white hole in the ATP just before the start of the loop? (We can't actually see the ATP white hole, but we can infer that it's there just before you wake up.)
That said, I'm not sure I agree with the game's assertion that you'd break spacetime by not jumping through again. Self emerged from a white hole before that loop started, and they get incinerated just after that loop ends. The next loop would just begin with no one in the ATP. I don't think the ATP "remembers" that Self should be created.
Another "inside the ATP" plot hole is that you can "see" what's happening for a few moments after the black hole closes. That loop's memories have already finished getting sent back, so you shouldn't "remember" that, unless you pull the core and wait out the final ending inside the ATP.

oh man, i've been a fan of this game for a while now but I realised that i hadn't actually figured out how the ash twin project black hole thing worked
if i'm correct, by going into the black hole in the ATP, one of you comes out but 22 minutes earlier, and then the memories of that loop are sent back to the you at the start of the loop, which means there is now a you from the previous loop and the you from the current loop at the same time.
the reason there isn't more of you when you go in the black hole again is probably because the one going in the black hole is sent back to a time before there was a duplicate. also, it probably sends you back to before your memories are sent back to your original body, which i think is why not going in the black hole again causes an anomaly- if you didnt go in the black hole then a loop with both of you in it couldn't have happened

Imagine the Self would also hop into the blackhole with us. Then we would end up deplicating ourselfs until there are hundred hatchlings walking around :D

This playthrough was so much fun to watch, like many others I've watched quite a few, but they aren't all as special as you made this, thanks for sharing!
I haven't yet watched your Echoes of the Eye run yet, so maybe you already found these things, but I wanted to mention them in case you hadn't checked them out and do feel like revisiting them at some point.
    1. There's more fun to be had at the High Energy Lab, I shouldn't elaborate more in case you want to play around with it yourself.
    2. There is some areas on Timber Hearth you can explore if you go geyser diving ::)

I have watched About Oliver (an actual astrophysicist) playthrough Outer Wilds. You definitely figured out the mysteries faster than he did.

Oh... This ended somewhat... unintentionally disastrously. 😳
I would recommend pretending that everything was already broken before u arriving there. 👀
      It always works!!! 🙂
Maybe no one will notice 😌☝️
But if someone asks, you blame that other person who was leaning against the wall 🤣
      Technically it wouldn't be a lie 💀🤣

You can also destroy spacetime in the High Energy Lab by removing a core after the scout's come out but before it enters.
And there an "ending" for removing the Advanced Core and flying out of the supernova's range.

So, the first time I got inside Ash Twin, it was almost the end of the cycle and I had just made it to the switch to turn off gravity when the thing opened up and swallowed me. Next cycle I went back, saw myself, we reassured each other the universe probably didn't care that there were two of us, and I grabbed the warp core to take to the vessel. I was in for a confusing time.
I made it to the vessel and warped. So, normally when you break spacetime, and reload, your old self is gone and things are normal again. Another thing that's probably not obvious to most is that when you warp the vessel, the game saves, and if you somehow find a way to die on the Eye (I'm sure there are ways like running out of air or maybe finding something to fall off of) you'll restart in the Vessel outside the Eye.
In your playthrough you warped the Vessel at the last second before the cycle would have ended so clearly you can survive on the Eye past the 22-minutes. Except, not if there are two of you, since your unhelpful past self refuses to jump in the black hole again (they're the worst), you can be minding your business on the Eye and suddenly spacetime breaks, game over. I hadn't seen that before so, um, excuse me what? It reloads at the Vessel. Funny thing is it reloads with the Old You still in Ash Twin and so you're _still_ on a timer. The second time spacetime broke I was just starting to fall in the Eye-hole. Um, wait was I not supposed to go in there?
I dunno what the timer is set to you when you reload, if it's 22 minutes I must have been unbelievably slow getting across the Eye. If it's whatever portion of time you had left when you warped there, that's kinda bad, you could get soft-locked like that.
I guess technically, in that final/true timeline, I ended and rebooted the universe before the sun actually exploded? Must have been confusing for everyone. "Oh no, the sun is going to explode in a few minutes, what are we-"
