Learned so much! Bummer the new edition has the same over- saturated coloring. After watching I am intrigued to find an 80’s edition for myself. I currently only have the borderless centennial smith-waite and love the muted colors. Thanks so much for your review.
Yes, I adore the Borderless and the regular centennial as well. And/but they're not quite the iconic RWS deck either with those more primary colors.... Sigh. The search for an in-print version continues!
You did it again Lisa... Made me go out and buy ANOTHER deck (because I have to have all RWS) I didn't know there was a new one. My favorite is my 73ish blue box too! LOVE the way you compared the vintage blue box and tarot cards in general with a diamond!! THIS is why we love you so much! Another GREAT video! Good ~vibes~ 2U, Nancy
Yep, I’m sticking with my centennial and definitely will not be buying another us games rws deck until they put out the “unicorn” we’re all looking for. Great video, as always. 🙏
Mindful Tarot I hear you... it’s arriving Thursday. Although, I am worried, as some people have said to me that they ordered it too but Amazon are still selling through their old stock first.
The Hermit’s Cave I had to send one back to Amazon ... the sellers photo was of the new deck but what arrived was same old same old. Good luck! And eager to hear your thoughts!!!
hi, Angelo here from Athens , Greece, great vid, so into these decks! lately i found a Greek version of the 70s last copy maybe in Greece, in a small shop forgotten, i will do a flip through soon! i think it was from the blue box copied because i dont understand yet where did the blue of the hermit came from!
I have to admit, I thought it was gonna be worse Lisa 🤣 Colours always come across slightly different on screen....I'd be interested to know if the colours are similar to the University Press edition....think that's the name...ya know, the one with the pink ankh back. The blues remind me of that. Great vid 👍🤩
Yeah, it's not sooooo bad. If I didn't know better. I just uploaded a video, dear one, comparing this to the University Books edition. Hope that answered your questions...
Agree on everything you’ve said and felt because I do own these older decks (the 80s is my favorite). What sets these decks apart from everything else is in my opinion the printing technique: everything looks so crisp and high quality on the matter card stock. The Ace of Wands for example has a little checkered detail in the cloud and this looks simply magnificent. I have to elaborate on the German Tarot of A.E. Waite: I dislike the grayish color on the faces and that the line work to me looks like a copy of a copy. To me the detail is most beautiful on older Rider Packs or Yellow Boxes by US Games. People who appreciate the German Deck for its art and can live without the pebble backs should check out the older version by the same publisher in a dark blue top lid box: it has the exact same printing quality.
This is great - and I agree with you too about the AGM (both the orange and the blue lid versions). When I first got it a couple of years ago I was blown away by the precision of the images - but these days, the color and card stock on the 70s and 80s versions win the day... Thanks so much for watching and writing! I always appreciate your perspective!
Hold fast to your dreams Annalisa! Stranger things have happened. You know - the AGM Premium version is based on the Pam A..... that's probably as close as I'll ever get! Ha!
Hey Annalisa, there's someone who took Kenji's high resolution scans of his Pam A and made them into a deck you can purchase on Make Playing Cards. The deck is $22.10, and shipping is like $10. They did only some very light digital editing to disguise only the most obvious of damage (like the effacing on Kenji's 3 of Pentacles), so it's about as close to a Pam A as one can get without taking out a second mortgage. It even has a crackle back! The deck prints a shade on the dark side, in part because the images aren't hyper re-touched, so a century of dirt is also being replicated, but in part because they chose Make Playing Card's blue core card stock to print these. That makes the white of that stock a bit on the cooler gray side. It's still a really nice deck and definitely one of my favorites. It's really neat to compare it with the AGM premium version and US Games Centennial. www.makeplayingcards.com/sell/marketplace/study-deck-for-tarot-course.html
bump bomp bum beduunnnn...reminds me of "Let's Make A Deal" - when you pick the box with a donkey in it...lol, loved the build up. I definitely chock it up to you (and Bobbie Beasley) that I managed to get a Blushing Fool and a beautiful (my favorite) 80"s/90's deck with the most delicious shuffle-ability. Interesting that the box says one place and the deck says another! Goes to my theory, that they print all this stuff separately, and it's assembled at different rates...so you get LWB's from previous editions, in later decks (?) conspiracy theory (??)
Haha! glad you enjoyed the build-up... I wasn't sure whether it might be a bit annoying or not! - will you be at NWTS? if so, looking forward to connecting IRL again! xo
If I get to feeling better I might pop down for a day...I've had the flu for almost 2 weeks and I have a surgery coming up so we'll see...if not I am going to try to make it to Denver in September. I love Denver and the tarot people (Lisa of Supportive tarot and Peggy Papez, along with Dustin from a Modern Metaphysics Man) are organizing. I grew up in the Southwest, it doesn't take too much to get me to pop over that way...
tamipie dang - hope you feel better soon. Meanwhile: tell me more about Denver... my sister in law just moved there and I’ve been looking for a reason to visit!
@@MindfulTarot there's a facebook group...facebook.com/groups/2228761650560604/ things are not super di dooper organized, but we are all working together...looks like some interesting tubers may go...and Denver's nice, what's not to like. It isn't full on like a symposium, it's going to be more casual like we all take a vacation in the same place and get together. I'm still not 100% but I love the idea. And of course, tarot peeps just like each other...
I never did manage to score a Dirty Pam (and loathe the card stock on the Radiant Wise...) - but yes, the Centennial is awesome, isn't it? I just uploaded a video trying to respond to you on this score....
@@MindfulTarot That's a shame about the Dirty Pam, maybe one day you can nab a copy on ebay or in a trade! I timmed my copy because I felt the white borders really detracted from the artwork, the colours really sing when you remove them. On saying that, I kind of wish I'd bought a second copy and left it untrimmed but I never buy back up decks. I've heard rumour of a pocket version, which could be cool. I adore my tinned Morgan Greer, it's a perfect travel size....Oh cool, I'm going to pootle off and watch said video! Thank you Lisa. :)
The matte finish from China and reduction in saturation would indeed make this the perfect deck! For some reason it’s very appealing to me to have them printed in Europe. At the end of the day I feel like Smith’s divine artwork shines in whatever strange things manufacturers might do to it. 🙂 I enjoy the channel 🃏
Hey Lisa, at the start of the video you mentioned decks printed in China and Italy. I haven't seen any yellow box decks printed in China yet. Do you have any examples you can share with us?
Thanks for asking Mary! I have a Giant RWS that was printed in China. I had lurked on eBay forever looking for a Belgian copy of the deck - e.g slightly vintage - then got a Chinese printing and found that it was better than the cartamundi Belgium-made one. It's really quite nice! But come to think of it: I don't know that I've seen any of the smaller yellow box from Chinese printers.... hmmmmm.... I'll do some research and see what I can find out.
The premium von a.e. waite (strength box) gloss attracts dirt spots very quickly on the borders, which you can wipe off. (The english premium strength box doesn't have that same gloss/issue) Just giving everyone a heads up. 😊 Also *some* cards have better color in the german in my opinion. (About 7-10) otherwise all the cards are pretty much the same. Thanks for the video lisa. I might get an 80's version yellow box. Cool (My Tarot IG @decipherborn)
Yes - it's on Amazon - but be careful. Check with seller that it's the newest version and not old stock. The photo can be deceiving. You can probably also buy directly from US Games by reaching out through their customer service: www.usgamesinc.com/contact_us/ They are amazingly friendly and helpful -
yeah - I hear you. It's so odd - since in so many ways Italy is the absolute epicenter for gorgeous paper and card stock.... not to mention the origin of Tarot itself!
Yessss! RWS yellow box time once again!

yes - the unicorn still awaits somewhere off in the murky distance! xo
I’ll get a hold of this one, but I think my favorite RWS will still for now be Albano-Waite and the Centennial Edition w/borders
I share your loves, too!
Amazing resource! Thank you!! 😍😍😍
The 4C's of Tarot!!!! YESSSS ;0)
I have to get this deck! Thank you for sharing it Lisa.
Thanks so much, Simon! eager to hear what you think. Less of a disappointment for me than it might have been... but...

Nothing beats the no copyright blushing fool sets , except maybe the Albano vintage decks.
Well, I'd have to agree 100%. But - I've yet to score a blushing fool.
Oh yeah. I have two Blushing Fool Decks - one is a blue box 1971 edition and the other is a 1972 edition. They are exquisite.
So agree on so much. Great video. Thanks. :)
A little disappointing, but not unexpected. Thank you for satisfying my curiosity.
I only need one RWS anyway. :P
Well - yeah. But "need" somehow doesn't figure into it for me, much to my wallet's detriment! - thanks for watching!! xo
